On an Afternoon Retrieval Mission with That Darn Bear. Retrieving a few caches along the way
Out today with GeoHubby (GNARwhal) to hunt down a few random caches while running some errands. We haven't been out these ways before so we had a fresh playing field to choose from.Nice hiding spot. As soon as I saw it I knew that's where it was. Neither of us are good with creepy crawlies, but GeoHubby took one for the team and retrieved the cache. Thanks for bringing us here. The plan had been to follow the road around to collect the remaining caches, but it would be highly unlikely my Swifty would make it through the ford... Oh well, we'll come in from the other side at some point to collect the others.
We weren't sure if we would be able to cross the ford or not, but there wasn't too much water in it, so through we went in our AWD car, with a bit of acceleration and wheel spinning to get up the steep slope coming out. The cache was then a quick easy find. TFTC
Completed the loop. After waiting for a farmer to cross the ford I decided my city car wasn't going though, there seems to be quite a few bigger stones in the ford.
One of 20 caches located today, mostly in the Loburn vicinity and north of there. After driving to earlier caches, I was on my bike to do this series. Enjoyable little ride. Each of these caches was a quick (or reasonably quick) find. #4477. TFTC.
P.S. My first car back in the 1970s was a Ford Cortina Mk III. One of my current cars is a Ford Focus.

We started this series from the other end, then had to backtrack to avoid the ford, which requires 4wd from the south (2wd is OK from the north).
Quick find and a handful of plums had us back on our way.

Down in Christchurch with the Squirrel, ABCDF4 and eyespyben. During Covid lockdown, we solved a load of puzzles and decided that this would be a good time to visit. We've enjoyed a few days of good weather and seeing the Canterbury countryside. The caches have been in varying states - some good, some not so much. Our time here has been a blast, and we'd like to thank all COs who have made this adventure possible. Thank you and TFTC.
With ABCDF4, eyespyben, and Gap (of Fap and Gap). Logging all finds as Team HRP (Huntly, Rotorua, Papamoa - Our hometowns)... During Covid-19 lockdown, we solved a truck load of puzzles around Christchurch - Canterbury region. No use thrashing the old grey matter for no cause - We decided we should make good on this handiwork...
There are lots of interesting trails and geoart surrounding Christchurch. What you aren’t told is how far flung some of these caches actually are. Some beforehand advice would have been great, so here are some of my notes... You’re welcome!
1. Mobile coverage is patchy, especially in those quiet, rural areas where it was most needed. Saving caches to offline might show that you are prepared and organised...
2. There are many dusty metal roads on the trails. The car will get messy, and your hair will feel like cardboard at the end of the day...
3. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential. You will climb in and out of hedges, gorse, and other rough stuff. You might get scratched, cut to shreds, and bleed a lot. It’s not advised to wear your brand new jacket on the day...
4. Take lots of food and drink. You’ll probably be head down, tail up and not realise you haven’t eaten until late afternoon. There are very few shops or gas stations out there...
5. Make sure that you secure keys and wallet and know where these are placed for easy retrieval. A full box of pens might be useful too, especially if you’re inclined to free some into the wild...
6. Know the difference between left and right, and north, south, east, and west. Turning right and heading north will not get you to South Christchurch quickly.
7. Look with girl’s eyes rather than boys eyes... Some caches haven’t been found in a while and you might have to get down on your knees to pray.
8. Always be prepared for misleading hints. This is what turns simple caches into D5/T5 hides... “Head height” could mean the cache is positioned at your toes.
9. Have a sense of humour and like the people you go caching with. It’s going to be a very long day, and you might want to hurt someone during the journey...
10. Make sure you can operate your phone/device and it doesn’t crash when you most need it...
11. Learn to cut and paste logs because you’re going to repeat this function so often when logging all of your finds.
12. Above all else, have fun and be kind...
If recent days have been anything to go by, then today's activity is going to seem crazy. We have such a big game to play, spread out over a very large area - An early morning start in the north, with a late finish on the trails to the south... Let's go! No problems with this hide - Found exactly as hinted. Thanks Wombles B.J&T and TFTC.

After puzzle solving in the Canterbury region along with EyeSpyBen we were invited to join Fap (from Fap & Gap) and Squirrel Nutcase to a week long caching adventure in the Canterbury area. With flights and accommodation booked were off, all met up in ChCh. and many hard dusty Kms travelled and many caches found, I think the Squirrel has said it all in his brief. Many thanks for the placements and Cos for bringin us to the very pleasant areas we travelled in to your region

Heading back from Kaikoura to Chch today and stopping for caches along the way as well as meeting up with KCN in Rangiora and collecting a few just north of there. Thanks to all the COs for placing the caches.
Joojoo57 and I were out this way and didn't really have much of a plan for the day and she was driving her rental car so I did the honour of being gopher today. Found and signed and onto the next.
Nice easy find, cache safe and dry. Log signed as girl power. Our one and only Ford car was a ford Popular. My Mum bought it from new NPM30, it was black and beautifully looked after, but it was a B- - - - to start on a frosty morning! She used to keep a wee parafin heater under the engine in Winter which worked well. Looking back, that could have been an interesting fire!! TFTC and the memories.
We tackled these from #6 downwards. A great wee series. Signed as Girlpower. Thanks for the hide.
This is a clever series and very cute, love finding these. Signed log as Girl Power which is Busy Paws, Coconuts3, Jude_E and lytteltonwitch. Thanks Wombles
Cache was a quick find by Girl Power team of Busy Paws, Coconuts3, Jude_E and lytteltonwitch. A great wee series
#6247. I decided to drive north today to visit Waikari to do the old cache near the Moa hunter rock art to fill another hole in the NZ Jasmer Challenge. While driving back I noticed my GPS was no longer functioning. I had dropped it in mud earlier in the day and washed it off at the Waikari rest rooms. But clearly the GPS is no longer waterproof as the screen was now full of moisture and the GPS was not picking up any signals. So changed over to my smartphone app and used this get me to Glentui. I had to search blind for the old letterbox cache as I had a non-functioning GPS and the mobile had run out of juice soon after arriving. Amazingly I managed to find the old cache with just the hint as my guide.
I sat in the car thinking my caching day was now over but changed the batteries in my GPS as one last option. Amazingly after three attempts at starting up the GPS picked up a signal again and displayed the map. But the screen just had a tiny clear patch in the centre. So had to virtually drive down the road on the GPS map to find caches from this point.
While sitting in the car trying to work out where the next cache was hidden, a car pulled up behind me at one of the caches on this road and a lady stepped out and asked if I had found it. Yes indeed. Nice to meet team gkmlb who I recognised from my Kaitoke Drive-by event at the Mega. After this I followed my new buddies down the road as it was easier than trying to pull up caches on the defunct GPS. We both carried on down this road but the other team were quicker than me and had the cache in hand within seconds. We both signed the log and replaced the cache as found. Thanks for hiding it here Wombles B.J&T. After this I was back to solo caching as I screeched to a halt when I saw the ford in the river. Realised pretty quickly my tiny Toyota rental car was not going to make it through that pit. Team gkmlb had a 4x4 and were waiting on the other side. So I waved goodbye and backed away.

We were in Christchurch for a few days to help one of my sisters celebrate a significant birthday. With the celebrations over we were heading for home with the plan of finding a few caches along the way.
Neither of us have been along this road before, so it was great to be able to have a bit of time to explore the area courtesy of the cache owners who have placed caches that enable us to stop and have a look around.
I had a bit of a look then I decided that it was an area that was more suited to GK searching as it was dark and spidery. I backed out and let GK in, he soon found the cache and we all signed the log.
Thank you for placing the cache and of course thank you for the smilie.

Today I had spare time between work commitments so headed north of the city to see what I could find. Decided to have a go at this series. Not driving a Ford today, just a rental Mazda. My first car was a 1968 Ford Cortina (Mk2). We've still got a Ford at home. Last one in this series for me. TFTC, Biggles.
Taybeedragon, Zara, Toby and I came down this way as we heard the world turtle was hanging out somewhere near the nursery. It was too, we caught a glimpse of it back there, through the trees. So the mission for this weekend is done. But now that we are here, we carried on exploring the entire area between the Kowai and Ashley rivers.
The Seagnoid, Toby, Zara and I are on a mission to find the elusive Turtle in Christchurch. We leave Zara in Sefton, while The Seagnoid, Toby and I start exploring between the Kowai and Ashley rivers. The elusive Turtle has been located and Gracies nursery visited, so lets see what else is around here.
Its a Ford Mustang here. Yes. Tagged. Cheers

The 3rd and last day of our Easter raid East and we are out collecting some points for the Planetary Pursuit.
A great fun little series. A nice easy find before checking out the ford. I dont think we would get through but it was worth checking to be sure. Although it didnt have alot of water the other side looked abit steep for mums wee car so we turned around here. We made it to Neptune and its still a long way to Pluto but this puts us a little bit closer so double Thanks for the cache

Out this way picking up an online purchase so obviously couldn't resist in making a quick stop or two for a geocache. Cache was quickly found today. Thanks for the cache.
I'd been to Loburn to collect a TradeMe purchase and this wee series was near... oh, I was in a 4WD too... had to be done really!
I thought this was going to be a DNF for a while there. I found the main hint item but not the lesser one. Then I read Hinemoa's log. Phew! Got it!

My original plan involved caching somewhere else for the weekend, but winds interfered, and gave me an opportunity to cache closer to home. So out I went for a few hours of caching, and had great fun. I ended up with small rocks, dirt, and vegetation everywhere on myself and the car Definitely worth the fun! TFTC!!!
The poor car has slipped in quite deep, but I managed to rescue it after a bit of digging around. Not sure where to place as the hint object was covered in it, so GL atm on the right.

Out on a Mad Monday Mission with my wingman Team_Gaters. We headed out armed (or footed) with gumboots. That was a good call as the ground was soggy everywhere we went. We ended up going to Amberley, Back of Ashley and Loburn and home through Rangers. We even had the pleasure of watching an old school prefab negotiate a roundabout in Rangers! Incredible. The evening was mild, caches plenty and fun abounded. Good times.
Ha ha, we negotiated the ford and made it in it's glory.
Thanks for the cache Wombles B.J&T.

One more for me before getting back on the bike trusty vw wasn't to keen to tackle the ford today tftc
Quick find, hoping to get all of the rest of this series today. Cool evening. Winter definitely coming. No trouble with the ford itself... I actually enjoy them quite a bit. TFTC (3743)
7543. Found the last one in this small series. Now off to find a toilet and then have coffee. Thanks. Iris and Rodney.
Didn't cross the ford as advised. Made a quick find of this one. Enjoyed the ripe plums nearby. Thanks

Stopped at the Ford. All good. Bit soft on the bottom but revs equals metres. Didn't need 4wd today.
Bub's had fallen asleep so we decided to take a detour to find some caches and came across this neat wee series. Loved the caches, thanks so much And loved driving through the ford.
A lovely day for a drive to North Canterbury with Karma Reprint and Lorok. The ford was easy, only half a foot of water in it and a bit soft underfoot, nothing the mighty Outback couldn't power through! Cache was easy too, liking the cache attachments. Cheers
A nice quick find as we drove up Henry Ford's Road. Thanks for the stop.
Found with Kiwi Moose and Lorok on a lovely warm winters day. We'd planned a half day mission up and around Rangiora before attending the event, then work got cancelled, so we made it a full day! Sweet!
Had a great day, and found plenty to keep us busy.
Thanks to the CO's for the hides. Cheers.

Had a midwife appt in Rangiora, and needed to grab some caches after - so decided to come and finish clearing this trail off. I'd grabbed the others from the other end, and had two left, and with not many on the calendar, it was time to increase that number a little!!
This one took quite a while to find - much more than it should have!! My brain was just not switched on the right way!!! But I got the cache in the end - phew - and good as that dark was starting slowly to creep in!!
Consec caching day # 1380

Another good find on a drive/walk around the area with Just-Lookin..

Found on the way home from a meeting of our tramping club. Another nice easy find. TFTC
Yay a day that I have no work or errands. It also happens to be a dash day. So I headed out to Loburn. I love the cache container, cleverly crafted. A fun series done in my cache mobile a Ford Focus.
Found the cache ok. A nice quick find which was good as I'd stopped in the middle of the road, although no traffic about at 7 in the morning. Cheers and TFTC
Well the ford proved no obstacle. We walked across the tiny stream with quite dry feet. Skipped and danced up the road, bled profusely on the barbed wire and shouted with glee at the find.
This has proved to be a wonderful experience for the littlies and us. A safe road, water, autumn tints and six caches!! This would be a great series to introduce new cachers to the "sport." Only one to go.

#12288. We had no trouble fording the ford (Troodles took it nice and slowly) and soon found the cache. TFTC.
Had a fun afternoon out caching with the family today. Started with this mini trail which young master really enjoyed. Thanks for placing and maintaining these caches!
Another gorgeous autumn day just asking for a caching expedition so we headed north of the Ashley to turn some green icons into smiles, travelling as far north as White Rock. It's been a while since we were last in the area and I'm pretty sure I've not been to White Rock before so had an enjoyable time exploring these North Canterbury roads. Thanks to the COs for their cache placements.
The first time I have driven through a ford (that contained water) as I usually chicken out and let StreetWalker do the honours, but with heart in mouth, I made it through! We used the hint to track down this cache as there were so many hiding places. TFTC.

I was going to try to clean this lot up today but my work car doesn't have very good height clearance and it was getting a bit tight. Stopped here and might try with the family car or bike another time. Thanks for yet more local caches.
After several days in Chch and surrounds we headed home today but of course made time to find some caches on the way. As well as caching around Ashley and Loburn we returned to the Greta Valley to finish what we didn't have time for on our way south.By the time we reached home last night our count for the day was 53, tired but satisfied with our efforts for the week. The logs were signed HZ+HM, H+H, or on some case with our full names.
Thank you to all CO's whose caches we found this week.

It was a combination of holidays, family visit and caching. This is an interesting little series that brought back memories. It shows your age I suppose. The road was quiet and the finds real cute. We expected more water coming through at the ford but the in and out are still more suited to 4x4 even when running at a trickle. It was handy to have a short cut to where we wanted to go too. Thank you Wombles B.J&T
TFTC. KotukuSI suggested we come for a wee drive to look at what Henry Ford had to offer since we were going to be nearby attending the Woodend CITO. Well I thought that was a super plan.
I have been down the main road many times and never noticed this side road before. So it was great fun to turn down this road and hit the ford.
What a lovely mini series of caches, so we'll themed and in a location I didn't know existed.
Thanks so much Wombles B,J&T

Purdiepurdie & I set off down this road after the Woodend Beach CITO. See #1 for full log.

Our Fords included an Anglia and a Prefect. We decided that our 2WD was not suitable for the ford so turned around and started from the other end. TFTC
It was another nice fine morning, just right for another cyclocache ride from Kaiapoi to Loburn and back. I hummed and haaed a bit about whether to use the road bike or the mountain bike seeing all the FORD caches were placed on a gravel road. Eventually I decided to gamble on the road bike and just see if I could manage the real ford when I came to it.
As I approached GZ it became gamble time as I headed down the hill past the "4WD ONLY" sign. I wondered how high the water would be and whether I would be able to ride across and whether I could keep my feet dry on my 1WD + 2 skinny-tyred velocipede. When the ford finally came into view it didn't look too bad and I was optimistic that I might be able to ride across through the shallow water. After picking the shallowish part (nearest to the upstream boundary of the ford) I entered the water and managed to get half-way across before the skinny tyres bogged in the soft gravel in the bottom of the ford. Oh no! As I came to a stop I fell to the right but managed to land my right foot on the dry top of one of the bordering rocks. [^] A bit of dry-foot rock hopping and I was on the other side with 2 dry feet. Yea! The cache was an easy find. Now just one more FORD to locate before heading for home. Thanks Womblesx3.

Last one for me today, thanks for taking me down a road not travelled Wombles B&T even if it wasn't in a Ford or over a ford!
