This earth cache really blew us away today as the wind was very strong. However, we were pleased to be able to see the island from this point. TFTEC.

We arrived on a short visit to Flinders Island with ilook4geo and we were happy to visit this high point in the island. The view was not really clear today and the wind was quite strong. Answers for this cache have been sent to the CO. We were soon blown back to the car to continue our exploration of the island. Thanks for creating this cache go to Team-Ruphace.

With the last full day of my trip coming to a close I knew I had to make an effort to get out and find the last 3 caches on the island before the sun began to set. With the trusty partner and little brothers in the car we were soon off and on the road to go and add some smilies to the map.
This was first cab of the rank as it was the furthest away from our starting location, finding the trail up we soon found ourselves having the lookout to ourselves....... not an uncommon event on this island. With a quick look around the answers were soon noted and we were off to get the last earthcache left on the island. Thanks for the cache and the little adventure.

Loved Flinders..... soooo windy up here!

Aquilus1 and I have been on a mission.....a mission to collect Australian states/counties. The target this time was Tasmania, with neither of us having found a cache yet in Tassie. So a loop was planned, starting/finishing in Lonny (even the plane pilot called it this!! Love that!). I was driving so my logs are a little more generic than Aquilus1's, my apologies.

Day #1 Leave Canberra at sparrows, transiting through Melbourne and collecting our car....first things first was to get the oldies along the cataract gorge, which was great as Aquilus1 had never been to Tassie before and its a great place to start. Onwards up the Tamar and then zigzagging across through Devonport, Burnie and eventually ending at Stanley.

Day #2 had us go back to Devonport for a FTF......yay! Then onto Hobart, via Queenstown! Long day through blizzards, hydro power and SO MUCH NOTHING! Beautiful nothing of course Smile

Day #3 around Tassie.....into Huon valley, freezing to death in the water in Clarence, passed Port Arthur to see some caves and ending up in Sorrell

Day #4 was power trailing large letterboxes until we had to head back north to Lonny, via Buckland, Oatlands, Fingal and Scottsdale..... dodging wildlife after dark.....so scary!

Day #5 was a quick duck over to Flinders and back..... car rental place thought we were nuts! Then back to Canberra, safe and snug under my blanket for the -5 night.....now THATS cold!

First cache of the day and definitely a great one to start with... OMG was it windy and COLD! Still, a fantastic location and loved it! GReyHams sent the answers in for us both.

Trip log: Day 5 of 5 with GreyHams on our Tasmanian Caching Trip. A trip planned with counties, and caches of quality as we pass. If your cache made our list it had a quality we sort... thank you for your cache!

Today was all about Flinders Island, we took the plane over in the morning, a memorable experience of many interesting passengers but the crew were great and got us there not too late. The car hire people are a wealth of information and with our itinery tight we were secure that our choices would serve us well... they thought we were nuts to just be there for the time we were but 5 hours we saw a lot!

I was surprised at how mountainous Flinders was, it totally surprised me and with the scenic bays and mountain vistas it was quite spectacular. Of course our time went quick but we spent it well and then it was back across to Lonny were we made the connecting flights that took us home... but Tassie, you delivered!

We drove here when the sun was shining and the breeze was almost non existent. Arrived when there was a slight breeze and left when the breeze was making beaufort earn his money!!!

Suddenly we were in heavy mist but this soon disappeared when driving back to Whitemark.

Answers will be sent very soon.

Our first cache visit this morning was to Walkers Lookout where we collected information for this Earthcache. We think the answers to the questions are:

1. The Roaring Forties are strong westerly winds found in the Southern Hemisphere, generally between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees.

2. Over an extended period of time, sand deposits have formed on the coastline through a combination of two things: erosion of the inland granite outcrops taking sand and larger particles down the slopes to the coastline; and wave action bringing sand from the sea and depositing it on the coastline. The build-up of the coastal dunes has created barriers or dams which trap water running down the steep slopes from the granite outcrops and keeps the water on the inland side of the dunes to create lagoons.

3. Erosion of the granite outcrops resulted in the formation of fine particles, which prior to the formation of the coastal dunes, flowed into the sea to create sedimentary layers. When there was land uplift, the previously sedimentary layers before sea level became sedimentary layers which were above sea level. At this point, the coastal plains were formed.

4. Evidence of erosion includes: the rounding of the high granite outcrops to create large, massive outcrops with rounded edges; the formation of coastal dunes; deposits of fine to coarse gravel on the inland sides of the coastal dunes; and, the creation of gullies and ruts on roads as water flows quickly from the high rock outcrops down to the coastal plains.

5. It was quite windy during our visit making it difficult to walk into the wind as we headed to the Trig Point. However, our car was easy to control on the road and nothing was being blown out of trees and bushes. Hence our estimate of the wind strength is 7 on the Beaufort Scale (High Wind).

Thanks Team-Ruphace for an interesting Earthcache in a location with great views over the area.

On our last day on Flinders Island TaurusSix and I admired the view from this lookout. We were able to see many of the outlying islands and particularly had a good view of Mount Strzelecki, which we had climbed a few days prior.
We have loved our trip here.

This is our first visit to Flinders Island, and will definitely not be our last.
The day we arrrived was lovely and sunny and clear, so we headed up to the lookout straight away. Thanks goodness we did..the remainder of our visit was overcast and very windy, but we loved it all the same.
So much beautiful scenery!
Thanks for the earthcache Team-Ruphace.

Wow, what a gorgeous island. The view from Wallkers Lookout is stunning. We came to Flinders Island on our yacht but lucky for us we had a friend here who took us on a tour. As there are only two caches on the island I was keen to find them and score the goodbye 2018 and hello 2019 souvenirs. Thanks for bringing us here.

Despite the insane winds this morning up there (and how congested I feel fighting a cold) we're still smiling up here!!

Heading to the airport, we voted for a dash up to Walkers lookout for a last view of the places we'd enjoyed over the last week. What a top place! Today was sunny with only a bit of a breeze and the views were great.

I'd spent the whole week marveling at the geology of the island so it was fitting that this earth cache was the last stop before our flight. There are SO many fascinating rocks everywhere and I couldn't stop taking photos of them all! The coastline shows great evidence of the different sea levels over the centuries and is a top area to study the various rocks.

We spent 5 delightful days on Flinders Island with close to perfect weather. Mt Walker gave us a great place to see pretty much from one end to the other and one side to the other. This visit, and the maps at the airport, gave us an interesting insight to the geology of the island.

Our first full day on Flinders Island included a trip to the Patriarchs where we fed the wallabies and visits to several lookouts. This was the final and most impressive one. Loved our stay on Flinders - lovely scenery, interesting wildlife and friendly people. Have emailed answers to the CO - hopefully they are OK.
