Day 3 of our Dunedin Mega visit. Teamed up with gonefishing for a most enjoyable weekend. Some logs were signed with our separate names, some were signed 'Team bogo' to save space. Today we're heading to Lake Mahinerangi. Enjoyed being out in the countryside. Thanks to everyone involved for putting on a great Mega Event, and also to all the local Cache Owners for placing and maintaining all their caches.Cheers and TFTC
Down in Dunedin for the Mega. Great to be back for another Mega 12 years after NZ's first Mega here in 2012. Finding a few caches with Boxhill and having a few laughs on the way. Today signing some logs as Team BOGO or our individual names. Thanks to the team for putting on a great Mega weekend, and also to all the COs for placing and maintaining the caches.TFTC katie w
Later this morning I decided to do a road trip out to Lake Mahinerangi mainly to sign off a few of the D/T grid and any others that might get in the way.Anothe one of the others.Cheers for the cache, katie_w.
Cache 1863 wasnt a mining for this one but the car happened to pull over here and well I wasnt saying no to an easy find, sadly the cache container is all busted up, but somehow the log is dry T4TC
Wow, what a story. Definitely worthy of a cache to bring this to the attention of people. Thanks katie w
#10,445. I did a bit of a diversion on my way to Invercargill from Dunedin. Yes its the road less travelled to reach that wondrous southern centre of hospitality and sophistication. The lure of some challenge caches and a virtual cache pulled me away from the mainstream. This is a rather intriguing plaque. I could not determine how the daughter was involved in the incident and whether she died from her wounds. So I googled the incident and found this article.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/75701526/150-year-old-waipori-murder-commemorated
Seems the daughter did survive the attack. The "medical" treatment for the father seems by modern day standards to be quite barbaric. Interesting to see how MP Peter Dunne was connected to this.
It is plaques like this that bring alive the past in a place that must have been very different a century or more ago. Quick find of the cache. Signed the logbook and replaced the cache where found. Thanks katie w for hiding it here.

Cows mooing, sheep bleating. Clear blue skies and fabulous views. Great location. Pity about sad reason for memorial.
Once again I would never have seen/know anything about this without caching. Well worth a fav from me just for the history/if not the cache.
We would never have stopped here or seen this plaque, had it not been for this cache - very glad to have the background. Nice, easy find with Flamingo4850. Using the hint we managed to go straight to it. TFTC.
Had driven past this spot a couple times over the weekend, but claimed the smile on the afternoon of leaving on the trip home.
Thanks for the history, although not nice history.
There was a Speights cap at on the rock, regarding horses from Clinton, the only way to travel these parts back in the day.

After spending a lovely relaxing weekend in Lake Mahinerangi, it seemed to be over far too soon and we were off again sooner than I would have liked. We stopped for this one on the way home today. While navigating yesterday I was too distracted with the tiny pocket of wifi I'd found and we drove straight past this, so today I was fired from navigating and was tasked with driving instead. TFTC
Am visiting Dunedin and spending a day geocaching in areas of my childhood and student days is looking like becoming an annual event. Out with gdkja. Interestingly, saw the headstones for these people at Waipori Cemetery earlier in the day. Tftc
This cache is what caching is all about. We have driven through here plenty of times before and had no idea of this historic spot. TFTC, a fav point from us. [^]
What a fascinating story, I wonder what happened to the daughter, did she die as well after being stabbed? Thanks for bringing us to this spot katie w.
Another reason why we love caching - this was a memorial we would have never known about if it wasn't for caching. TFTC
Found with StreetWalkerNZ on day 8 of our extended Easter break, today we are travelling from Clyde to Dunedin via Lake Mahinerangi on a beautiful Anzac day.
Who'd have thought there was a hotel here at one time. Just a digger near by today. We read the plaque and made the find. Thanks, katie w.

Yes we are close to Lake Mahinerangi - its just over there. Quick stop here to check out the murders. This one is now tagged. Cheers
Its Wednesday 24 April and we are off exploring Milburn, Lawrence and Lake Mahinerangi today. Awesome!!
Its another awesome geoventure to Dunedin, with The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby, Jack, Jill and William all along for the trip. Had a wonderful 10 days exploring Dunedin. It was great catching up with local cachers at several events we attended. Lots of walking and driving, with the odd cycle and wave ride to jazz things up. Thanks to all the COs that made this trip a wonderful success. Even managed to bag some lab caches along with wherigos, earth caches and events, with the usual mix taking us to some amazing places..

I wonder what provoked the unprovoked attack? There is always a reason, no matter how unrelated or insignificant.
So much great land has been lost under hydro schemes. I remember decent apricots no longer in the shops after a new hydro scheme went in. Man, that must be about 40 years ago!
Taybeedragon and I have an eleven day Easter weekend in Dunedin. Although, let's face it, given that we are from Blenheim and Picton that means two of those days was spent in travelling. In that time we grabbed a smidge over three hundred caches. Not bad, considering the amount of time spent way out on the back roads, on bicycles or canoeing on the water. A few virtuals, larges, letterboxes, earths, wherigos, and even ten lab caches in the haul. An awesome weekend!

An interesting plaque to read here. Worth the stop. Thanks for the history lesson. TFTC katie w
Spending a week in Dunedin & I decided to spend some time in Lawrence. Driving back this way, for variety.
Thanks for this cache, katie w, and the interesting history, I vaguely knew there had been a murder out here but had no idea of the specifics.

I've read about this incident on a couple of earlier occasions so it was quite nice to see where the Hibernian Accommodation House use to be. Cache is in good order.
WhTs not to love about a caching trip combined with downsouthinv having to deliver parts for work.
Any excuse is a good one, and time to head off the main road into the wilderness to find us some caches. Dropped a tb

At last, a free weekend before the onset of chaos. An early morning phone call...'are you able to take xyz up north to a customer?''
There was no excuse not to, quickly chucked clothes on dragged her outta bed raced into work, got parts, and on the road before 8am.
As we drove, the voice from the passenger seat, piped up and said ' look at all these, aren't we going near here?'
Oooh Goody!! Now it's a fun work trip, might be a long day!!!
A quick park and grab as we made our way to waipori

Out for a Sunday drive to a spot that has been on the explore list for some time. Last find before heading home via Lawrence. TFTC
A quick park and grab while out about grabbing a few caches to clean out an area of caches. TFTC
Parked and grabbed for another find on our way to Mahinerangi for the weekend
Interesting little memorial

Given the number of caches that have been associated with crime that we've found in the last few days on this Dundein trip and my fascination with NZ gold history I couldn't let this one slip by, TFTC a quick find and all in good order
Found with TregearP on a visit back up through the Waipori Gorge. We mountain biked through here in one of the Gold Fields Classic events in the early 2000's.
When TregearP saw this one there was no way we were not going to give it a go. This visit seems to have been a bit of a pilgrimage of some of Otago's less savory locations - out vaching in the vicinity of Aromoana and Easy Street yesterday and out here today.
All in good order. Signed log and replaced as found.
Thanks for the cache.

Great day out caching in the area, lot of neat caches, and interesting spots. Many Thanks Bitsprayer
We'd not planned to come this far but the lure of another cache kept us going. A sad memorial but one that we would not have known about without this cache. Found with AorakiSheep
One final stop before heading home. A quick find, thanks to the hint. Found with debsnz
After an early start this morning and then a flight from Auckland we were really looking forward to a weekend of caching in our old stomping ground.
Lots of lambs skipping about as we stopped for this one TFTC.

Interesting, but sad bit of history, and good memorial for the old hotel. I found one Atkinson grave but wasn't this Atkinson. I note Daywalk found it so we must have just missed it. Fav. TFTC
A memorial to where the boarding house once stood, and where a sad event took place. Thanks for the cache katie Pipedream
Found in dark. 7pm, this would have been easier a few months ago!
I'm on a 5 day caching trip in the south island. Have a few aims - right now its to up a few specific caches that I need to complete my grid for a challenge - and find some interesting caches on the way 1800km later I can say I've accomplished my aim!

An Easter Saturday tour of Lake Mahinerangi with Mrs D Senior & Co. Yes, a wee bit of wincing at the wording as we hanged around the plaque, so to speak. We saw Mr Atkinson's grave at the cemetery. Shows how well-populated the area was back then, to have an accommodation house here. Mr D hopped on his bike here to get to Lawrence in style.
Very pleased to stop here to get off the road from all the maniacs driving so fast on the gravel road. Another piece of history in this fascinating area. TFTC #9931
nice history lesson would have ridden past here without noticing if there was no cache here
Always interesting to read about this sort of history. Left TB. TFTC and happy new year!
We always enjoy a little bit of history, and the cache was a quick easy find on a rather damp morning. TFTC
We stopped here to find this cache on our way to find the OPQ Battery virtual.
+ a marble, - nothing.

Making our way to Gabriel's Gully on this leg of our trip.
A quick find here by tmann421 and interesting to learn more of this murder we had read about on the information signs we had read back in Waipouri.

Thanks for showing us this area - enjoyable drive.
Good place for a cache.

This one turned up not long after I was last over this way, but there is a new one in Lawrence and a couple near Milton to justify the trip. Thanks.
travelling between Lawrence and waipori and spied the plague on the rock, so stopped to have a look. being a geocacher, i thought maybe there is a cache here, so had a look around and found the cache by chance. lucky me. tftc.
FTF. New cache here was a great reason to pull the bike out and go for a very enjoyable ride. The plaque must be quite recent as I don't recall seeing it on the previous occasions I have passed by here. There's a mistake on it isn't there? I believe the correct usage is that a person is "hanged" not "hung". TFTC.
