Decided to dust the bike off and complete some more of this series. It was a warm day with a nice breeze every now and then. Enjoyed my ride with only one DNF for the day. One more trip, and I should have then series knocked over. Spotted 2 snakes today, small brown at the start and a huge red belly on the way back there out and about with the change in temp. Back in the car now and collected this one TFTC!
What an earthy smell around here today!!! Nice pit stop on our way to a multi way point. Thanks for the hide.
After lunch at the pub, we continued on caching for the day, finding the last few drivebys in the area. This gate has changed to a normal metal gate, no farmers name on it anymore. TFTC

Thanks for the interesting snippets of history here. It's been an interesting day observing the different land uses in these parts. Thanks for the cache.
We are enjoying our drive round the lovely back country this afternoon admiring the fauna and flora in between finding the caches. TFTC # 19,013

Hi BettyBoo3747, I found N G Sheppard Gate - Seven Oaks Road today. Unfortunately the log is moist and is very difficult to sign. It is also deteriorating.
Many thanks BettyBoo3747 for providing and maintaining this game piece for our enjoyment.

Surprisingly this ones seems to have done a runner. Replacement cache now in place.
No luck for us today. Searched for 10 minutes and then searched a little more. Thanks for bringing us here regardless.
Unfortunately the container appears to be missing, also had a good search in the wider area, checked hints and previous logs for clues.
Yes we took the time and had a look at the gate while we searched for the cache. It was out in the open and Micheena put it back where we think it should have been.
Okay well that last one was going to be the last one before we went home … but then we saw this one and we were going right past, so what can you do?!
Mr Riddell quickly found the gate and announced that the original gate had been removed…nice to see in the logs that you have already noted this.
Good that we have just visited the other remaining gate in Shepard’s road.
TFTC and all your research.

Called past today and left a new log sheet. I note the fancy gate has been removed.
Today is my last day off work until after the silly season. Even tho the weather is pretty horrible I wasn't going to pass up a child free caching day. It poured rain all the way from Albury to Wang than miraculously stopped at my first cache.
Thanks BettyBoo more smilies added to the rail trail today.

Nice quiet drive Off the mountain and out of the valley for a change. On the way to Melbs with yet another detour but what’s new! Time to collect this little pocket of caches before the next rain event makes it too soggy an outing. TFTC
Found while out on a caching trip up through Benalla and Wangaratta and the Winton Wetlands.
Thanks for the cache.
Thanks for the cache.
While the initial plans were for a long weekend south-east on Mount Howitt the latest forecasts of harsh weather had us detouring north to Mt Buffalo instead. It was a good alternative - the weather was kinder, and a few days later we managed to get to Mt Howitt after all.
After meeting up at the Winton Wetlands earlier today and a hearty dinner at the Eldorado pub it was off to strike more caching gold along these trails at night.
While the other Sheppard gate was easily seen and the cache found quickly, this one was a little trickier in the dark. Couldn't miss the Seven Oaks roadsigns though.
Thanks BettyBoo3747.

With a big day of hiking behind us it was time to enjoy a few drive-bys as we made our way to our overnight campground in a round about way With torches being our best friend we managed to grab 20 or so on the trail including a DNF .
This was a bit tricky in the dark but luckily it was spotted by someone taller
Thanks very much BettyBoo3747 for the great effort you always put into your caches.

After spending the day driving up from Geelong and hiking it was time for some drive bys on the way to the camp ground. Smashed out a bunch of these on the way to our glorious little camp site at whourley. Tftc!
Our last find for the day before we head home on Sunday. We have thoroughly enjoyed doing so many caches of yours today and this one was not exception. We were sorry that we did not see the original gate but thanks for the photo as well as the informative notes that we found very interesting!

Driving home from WANGARATTA this evening, on a few roads we have not yet travelled. Unrealistic target on a hot afternoon, but we did manage to fit in 10 caches, with only one DNF over a combination of BettyBoo, Harrowang, Bingley and RobMC caches.
Another quick find near another Sheppard Gate. Thanks BB

Gate seems to have changed to a new one. Possibly cache has been removed with the old one?
First day of my leave and after doing family things in the morning (and braving the last of the Christmas shopping) I had an afternoon to do some caching (and listen to a few a CDs without complaints from the back). I am hoping to crack 1000 for the year (suspect I will just be short) and so thought I would try a few more of the HSS series and then get a few more down in that part of the world. Left the geohound at home as it would be mainly a park and grab day - and some of the roads I planned were likely busy.
The damage from the recent storms in the Everton/Tarwingee area was quite surprising - there were a lot of fences missing (but hopefully in s few weeks it will have greened up, and lots of full dams). In the end it was a Jamin Appleford, BettyBoo3747 and Harrowang day with a couple of others thrown. Ended up with 25 for the day (including 13 from 13 from the free throw line which must be up there with the best days in this series - starting to really take shape now) and 3DNFs - I suspect 2 are missing, the other might have needed a harder look.
Thanks to all the COs - all were in good working order unless specified. Off to Orange for Christmas - might get a few more but might need to see if I can sneak back this way on the 31st to achieve the target.
I was too impressed with the gate, though the impending rain made me hurry here. I was even more impressed by the container, that is the type of Angus I like - need to get some myself.

Thanks for bringing us to this amazing gate. The Driver was in raptures over it and spent all the time I was hunting for the cache and more looking at the construction of it, commenting on the welding and other features of its structure. I found the cache quite quickly and in good condition.
Apparently the cable tie had broken so called past today and re-attached with new cable tie. Log OK.
A nice sunny winter day out so I decided to get amongst it and find a few local caches.

It was probably time to be thinking about heading back home and so we headed northward to finish up. We headed back via the Tarra-Eldorado Rd. and visited this one on the way.
This road has some of the best views in the North-East, particularly towards the Warby Ranges. It looks like prime pastoral land too, and the Sheppard family would of made a good go of it we thought.
These gates are great too, hopefully none of the landowners will remove them. At the most basic level, they are serving their purpose.
SL at 2.10pm. All ok.
A nice placement here. TFTC BettyBoo3747.

After setting up camp in the caravan park we went for a drive around the area to find a few more in the area. This took us around many coutry roads & into farming terriotry.
A good variety of containers & hide. Some easy & others a little challenging.

This is our fourth trip to the northern island this year. The first three were primarily for family events but withe some opportunities to do some caching along the way. The fourth trip is different as caching is our focus. After getting off The Spirit of Tasmania we are heading north to cache at Wangaratta and then Yass before heading into the ACT and Queanbeyan for a week. After that we will travel to Jindabyne for a few days with summiting Mount Kosciuszko being our main target for this part of our trip. Then we will visit Cooma and Tumut before heading back down the track through Wangaratta and Mansfield as we make our way to Alexandra for the MEGA. After the weekend we will continue to make our way south and back onto the Spirit of Tasmania for the “drive” across Bass Strait. We are really looking forward to three weeks of intense caching in great areas and, hopefully, catching up with some geocachers in each of the areas we will visit.
For the first part of the day we cached from Craigieburn to Wangaratta looking for caches which were easy to access as we headed north. For the remainder of the day we cached from Wangaratta to Beechworth. Each time we visit Wangaratta we try to allocate some time to look for caches in the Wangaratta, Myrtleford and Beechworth areas. During our earlier visits we concentrated on the excellent Hoop Star series and we started on some sections of the rail trails as well as individual caches in each of the areas. This trip we were hoping to explore some other sections of the extensive rail trails.
The caches in this section of the rail trail were easily accessible as it was just a short walk from where we parked the car to GZ. Accurate coordinates and familiarity with the particular style of hide led to a quick find. The cache and contents were in good condition. Thanks BettyBoo3747 for this cache and all your caches along the various rail trails in between Wangaratta and Beechworth.
***** We are currently writing detailed logs because of a challenge provided by Project-GC. "The Author" Badge challenges geocachers to average one hundred words or more in each log. On 1 September 2017 our average was 86 which seems close to the 100 target. However given that we have found so many GC caches, we have to write many logs with well over 100 words for a long period of time to get our average to the target. Apologies to anyone who finds the logs tedious but it is the only way that we can strive to attain this challenge. After 59 caches (which includes all cache finds up and including yesterday), the average log length is just over 87.5. Progress is being made but there is still a long way before we achieve our goal.*****

#2673 Out and about for a Sunday drive with the geohounds in glorious sunshine! Whilst we sniffed out the cache, the geowoofers did there own sniffing around the gate. Mr BGF spotted the hide before too long and we were on our way again. TFTC and sharing a nice bit of local history BB.
The rain's stopped for a while, so we thought we would take the opportunity to grab a few caches on our way to visit El Dorado. Even nicer now that the sun has come out

TFTC. When we were out finding some caches on Friday we noticed a small triangle of caches that we fad not previously found. We had better put that to rights, so this morning we went out in the Geof-vehicle specifically to complete finds. Love the gates and the history.
Pretty fancy farm gates! Quick find at gz after we checked out the gates. Tftc & the informative cache page.

Found on a visit to the North East for New Years.
Hot conditions meant it was hard work going around but the caching was great fun.
Beautiful gate and the cache was spotted after a bit of standing and staring.

Good coordinates really helped here. I looked where the GPS pointed but didn't see anything. I checked something else - ditto. I went back to where the GPS was pointing and looked from a slightly different angle.

Suscoe was enjoying a day caching with Phetlern to the east of Wangaratta today.
A delightful area, such long grass everywhere we went.
We had lots of fun caching together along these roads and trails.
The paddocks seemed in great condition and the cattle all looked happy.
Thanks to BettyBoo3747 for this placement, how lucky are we to be enjoying this area.

With our base camp set up in Wangaratta, we set out up the valley in the very good company of Suscoe. The weather was ideal, there were very few muggles about and we thoroughly enjoyed the mountain scenery, the views and of course the number and variety of geo-hides the GPS'r led us to. HP has some distant connections in this area, it was interesting to see if any names were familiar.

I found this easily enough. Took in the scenery and the fantastically made gate. It will still be around when I am long gone! Thanks for the cache BettyBoo and the excuse to get out of the house, evading the cleaning for another day and enjoying the glorious afternoon.
nice gate and i like this one because my surname is Sheppard. how about that. tftc.
Another NG Sheppard! How many of them are there in the area?
Must have a lot of spare time on their hands as they are very flash gates.
On the way into Wang this afternoon and this was just a slight detour.
Thanks, Robmc.

Another FTF, bringing our total to 3 for the day! Yay! We passed the other N.G. Sheppard gate on our way, and there were black Angus, a front end loader and lots of activity happening there, so glad we were heading in another direction! There is heavy cloud around and the sky is looking very threatening, so we did not waste any time finding the cache and SL at 1.32pm #3798. We are impressed that these gates are still in situ and it is always nice to discover something new in our local area. Thanks for bringing us down these country roads that are probably mostly used by the local farmers, but will soon be discovered by geocachers! Thanks again BB - guess it is back to the boring chores again - or maybe not!
