I very much love getting to visit the South Island. Until recently it wasn't something I got to do very often, but in the last year I've managed a series of mini-trips for geocaching, and here we are at the start of 2024 with another one. Just like my first SI trip in 2023, I've come to Christchurch to target a few specific caches to help with my Jasmer Grid, and qualification for a few challenges I'm currently working on.This is Day 2, and it's raining. Not major deluge-type stuff, but just a bit heavier than a fine drizzle. The kind of rain that gets into everything and can generally make for a miserable time caching even if you have wet weather gear. So I had a cruisy morning catching up with yesterday's logging before deciding that I really had to get out if I wanted to get any caches today. So I set forth, via a Couplands Bakery because, well this is the South Island right?Having failed to find GCE92 yesterday, I had decided to target the only other July 2001 cache available to me, so headed over to Glentui Bush to make the find. With the rain still falling, I figured I'd still be able to head back to Chch whilst stopping to find a few park 'n' grabs, and so I pulled over for this one. Interesting location, and I do like caches that make the best use of trees like thgis. It actually took me 2 trips around it before I made the find. No issues here with the cache itself, so I was to add my name to the logbook and then replace everything as found before heading back to the car again. Thanks for setting this one up.
Gummi_Venus targeted this one hoping to see the cool container in the images. It seems to have disappeared ages ago but that didnt stop us from enjoying this really cool tree. Bit of fun climbing around on it and checking out the surrounding toilet art.
Found with ObnoxiousSpaceCat after a day of caching in the area, interesting wee area/rest stop. TFTC!
It was snowing while I was here but I think I had a good look in all the likely places.
Our quickest find yet, kids knew exactly where to look We had to wait for someone using the dumpstation and the kids went into spy mode. Thanks for the fun cache!
Pulled off the road and soon discovered this cache's hiding place.

Time to cache out the Oxford area. Had a nice drive around some quiet roads. There are some nice looking life sentence blocks if that's your thing.
Aha there it is!! Heading down the road & saw another cache so just had to stop for a look. TFTC
Time to visit Oxford and its environs locating and signing off caches.
A nice wee dump station.
Cheers for the cache.

Interesting tree! No frog, but a nice dry cache was waiting for us today. Many thanks.
Found on this cold day arrived at GZ and it wasn't long long we spotted something signed the log Thank you for the cache
A good find on a lovely spring day. We will be back tomorrow to use the facilities before leaving town. TFTC
We stopped here to use the facilities and what do you know, there's a cache here to.
Thats a pretty impressive seat here but i can't for the life of me imagine why you'd want to sit right here
Thanks for putting the cache here for me to find

Nice to know where the dump station is. Another lonely seat. Thanks for the placement Hotspud
They sure have novel spots for seats in this areacache found in good condition thanks Hotspud for the tidy cache
After heading back to civilisation (Oxford, that is) after an overnight walk a little further inland, I had the opportunity to go after just one nearby cache. This was it. Spotted a small camouflaged pill bottle pretty much immediately. However the lid was off it and the container was empty. I'm assuming this was the actual cache. Put a new piece of signed paper inside it, screwed the lid back in place and hid it a little more thoroughly! #4342. TFTC.
Having a tiki tour around Canterbury and after lunch in Oxford had some fun caching for a few hours. A quick find in an awesome tree stump! Tftc
Cool little find while out walking the dog unfortunately forgot a pen again but tftc
Down in Christchurch with the Squirrel, ABCDF4 and eyespyben. During Covid lockdown, we solved a load of puzzles and decided that this would be a good time to visit. We've enjoyed a few days of good weather and seeing the Canterbury countryside. The caches have been in varying states - some good, some not so much. Our time here has been a blast, and we'd like to thank all COs who have made this adventure possible. Thank you and TFTC.
With ABCDF4, eyespyben, and Gap (of Fap and Gap). Logging all finds as Team HRP (Huntly, Rotorua, Papamoa - Our hometowns)... During Covid-19 lockdown, we solved a truck load of puzzles around Christchurch - Canterbury region. No use thrashing the old grey matter for no cause - We decided we should make good on this handiwork...
There are lots of interesting trails and geoart surrounding Christchurch. What you aren’t told is how far flung some of these caches actually are. Some beforehand advice would have been great, so here are some of my notes... You’re welcome!
1. Mobile coverage is patchy, especially in those quiet, rural areas where it was most needed. Saving caches to offline might show that you are prepared and organised...
2. There are many dusty metal roads on the trails. The car will get messy, and your hair will feel like cardboard at the end of the day...
3. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential. You will climb in and out of hedges, gorse, and other rough stuff. You might get scratched, cut to shreds, and bleed a lot. It’s not advised to wear your brand new jacket on the day...
4. Take lots of food and drink. You’ll probably be head down, tail up and not realise you haven’t eaten until late afternoon. There are very few shops or gas stations out there...
5. Make sure that you secure keys and wallet and know where these are placed for easy retrieval. A full box of pens might be useful too, especially if you’re inclined to free some into the wild...
6. Know the difference between left and right, and north, south, east, and west. Turning right and heading north will not get you to South Christchurch quickly.
7. Look with girl’s eyes rather than boys eyes... Some caches haven’t been found in a while and you might have to get down on your knees to pray.
8. Always be prepared for misleading hints. This is what turns simple caches into D5/T5 hides... “Head height” could mean the cache is positioned at your toes.
9. Have a sense of humour and like the people you go caching with. It’s going to be a very long day, and you might want to hurt someone during the journey...
10. Make sure you can operate your phone/device and it doesn’t crash when you most need it...
11. Learn to cut and paste logs because you’re going to repeat this function so often when logging all of your finds.
12. Above all else, have fun and be kind...
We have another one of those punishing plans to cache until we drop - An early morning start with the hope that we'll finish at a reasonable time... From South Christchurch, we took Highway 1 and crossed the Waimakariri River into Northern Christchurch... This was quite a big host, and we expected a bit more of a search - Found quickly. Thanks Hotspud and TFTC.

After puzzle solving in the Canterbury region along with ABCDF4 we were invited to join Fap (from Fap & Gap) and Squirrel Nutcase to a week long caching adventure in the Canterbury area. With flights and accommodation booked were off, all met up in ChCh. and many hard dusty Kms travelled and many caches found, I think the Squirrel has said it all in his brief. Many thanks for the placements and Cos for bringin us to the very pleasant areas we travelled in to your region

On our way to Oxford on business, so decided to make it a leisurely drive and get some caches along the way. There were a quite a few potential hiding places luckily I found it quickly! TFTC.
26 January 2020 4:06 PM. Hopped around the base of the tree for awhile before finding I had gone in the wrong direction from my starting point. Sat on the nearby lillypad to log. TFTC Hotspud
On a geocaching trip to Oxford with Busypaws. Took a wee while to find and ended up talking to a man who was filling up his water containers. Someone had left a zipped bag nearby which we thought might have been the cache but then checked my phone for the notes. Loved the plants in the old toilet.
What a quirky spot! Local gent was filling his water containers and LW explained what we were doing. Not a quick find, due to a decoy! But got the correct item in the end. TFTC
It was well hidden but got there in the end. It would have been an impressive tree. Tftc.

A cool little container, covered it up a little better than when I found it. TFTC Hotspud.
A bit of a lazy day today. Very warm, and not much planned except a family dinner tonight, so I went for a spin out to Oxford for some caching.
I like the towns out here. Oxford looks smart.
I can honestly say I cannot remember ever going to Cust before this trip, but that is quite pretty too. I reckon you can sense the community pride. Helpswith the impression when you pass through them in good weather though...
So a good days caching and not many DNFs. A few I had to move on from though due to a heavy muggle presence, but all up good fun. Got to bump into a couple of cachers from the coast too. Happened quite a lot on this trip. Cheers to the COs.
