This was a nice short detour to a lovely memorial. We really enjoyed seeing this tribute, showing how much Bess was cared for, and how lucky to be one of the few to have circumstance to be brought home ; So sad for the rest, which surely their men had great respect and attachment to. another terrible for war. This has us thinking we should watch Warhorse again. Very sad topic, but a well done film. Thanks for the cache!
I never knew this memorial was here, so I made a quick stop up the hill to visit Bess, then back down to grab the cache.I had some friendly calves in the padoxk next door wanting to keep me company.
Thanks for replacing this cache so we could come and turn this blue into a yellow. No probs today. Said a quick hello to Bess up on the hill. I think of her often and tell her story all the time. TFTC
Stopped here on the way back from an Orienteering event. Learnt how use a old school compass...did wish I had my gps as well haha.We looked at the memorial and much to my surprise there was 4G. We had nothing just down the road. A quick easy find with, I think he said "Dad and kids" not the Dad but their kids. I asked Mum if they also cached and she said yes the kids do so I asked if they wanted to find it with us. Found by Miniswiss
We did not intend on doing any geocaching today, instead we were went orienteering and afterwards mum stopped at the Bless memorial. One of the orienteering people had stopped there as well and asked my mum if we did geocaching and she said yes, I was already in the car so mum called out and went with our new geocaching friend and found it and signed it. Was nice to get another cache, especially when we did not expect to find any today.

What memories that come flooding back of stories relayed to me by my husband, of his Uncles who took their much loved horses, to the War in Egypt, and were distressed as they told him of having to shot them because they weren't allowed to bring them home again.
Extended the search to a logical spot and then discovered the new co ords! I wonder if my paternal grandad saw Bess when he was in Palestine. Great story. Thank you KiwiDragonfly
A nice quick find, even without the updated coordinates. All good here. An interesting history of wartime horses. Thanks for placing your cache. Ms_KR and I are on the road again, up "North" to visit family and friends. Today we travelled to Wellington, for a ferry.A lovely day for driving!Occassionally signed MK+KR on cache logs, and apologies for the generic logs. Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches.
Coordinates changed from:S 40 15.172 E 175 17.116Coordinates changed to:S 40 15.179 E 175 17.112Distance from original: 49.3 feet or 15.0 meters.The structure that housed the original cache is now in a state of disrepair, so it's now in a safer location.
Wow what an extraordinary horse Bess was. Couldnt see the cache though..as last finder has written the fence is down and theres no cache in the tree where they placed it. Had a good look on the ground but a no go Im afraid.
I am in Marton for a full day and what better way to spend it than to travel down to Scotts Ferry signing off caches.
The fence around the tree has been got at with one missing by either thr Bulls (none seen today) or Horses (also none seen today). The container was lying on the ground ready to be trampled on. I placed it in the tree hopefully out of harm's way though not guaranteed.
Cheers for the cache, KiwiDragonfly.

Found on the way to Rotorua for a Family Christmas. I left at lunchtime today, and manged to arrive lunchtime two days later. Rather quicker than expected! Yep Geocaching is the slowest route between two points!
I love caches based on history - especially forgotten history like this. No bulls or horses here today. Well, except for the horse on the hill. Bull poo though. I stepped in some. Ick.

Im on a LAB adventure that started in Marton, then to Bulls and out to the coast. Never been this way before so Toby and I are enjoying exploring this area. What an awesome place to discover. Thanks for the info on the cache page. Just had to walk up to the monument after tagging the cache. Cheers. Fav from me.
Zara and I came north to catch up with family and friends for Xmas with Rattll,s BBQ also on the radar. A surprise visit to the Etherlord Clan Saturday night and then a couple of days in Wanganui picking up some LABs and Trads to get Signal through the Castle Labyrinth. Then back to Paly and Wellington. Then with my friend aboard Zara,we did a side trip to Tora, Paihatua, Palmy, Foxton and back to Wellington. And awesome week travelling and catching up with friends with a little caching on the side.

We really enjoyed reading about Bess and her contribution to the war efforts. We were unaware of Purple Poppy Day but I have contacted my cousin, who made me a beautiful wooden red poppy and asked if he would make me a purple poppy because it is great to remember the animals that contributed to the war efforts, helping to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today. TFTC

Find number three for today here which I found after popping up to the actual memorial. The ground was still frozen in this paddock too. The cache was easier spotted than retrieved though.

I had a dot day to eliminate (only four left after today!) and decided with the nice, albeit very cold, weather I would go for a little drive to pick up a few caches before lunch. I ended up getting nine before lunchtime pie and coffee called.

Lovely spot! Thankfully, neither bulls nor horses around today. I took a toy and left a toy. T muchly FTC
After having a cache at this site for several years I finally made it here for one of the ANZAC services this year. Complete with several dogs and horses from as far as Whangarei and Marlborough it was a lovely way to reflect on the part animals have played during wartime.
Once everyone had either departed for home or moved across the road for morning tea I had the chance to check on the cache. The log is damp, but as it is waterproof I have left things as is.

just one more out this way i told myself, im glad i did, thank you for placing the cache here so more people can see and read about the important part of the war, took tb, tftc
Wasn't sure about crossing the field, but the GPSr said I had to....and it looked a likely place, the hint made sense when we got there, but its still handy to have a hubby with long arms. A really cool story, and another example of history popping up in places where you'd least expect it. Thanks for bringing us here.
Whoa. What an amazing spot!
I absolutely loved the history lesson here; from Bess to the true Gallipoli Pines.
What an incredibly special place. Thank you for bringing us here.
FP awarded. TFTC KiwiDragonfly!

Lovely spot to visit and contemplate the sacrifices made by 'man' and beast to give us the 'freedoms' we enjoy today. Thank you for placing and maintaining a geocache here.
Nice day out with tmann421 and blair137 hunting caches
Another site I knew nothing about, what a wonderful idea.
blair137 really enjoyed it here

Had the day off work. So pleased to be able to geocache after Covid levels 3 and 4. Headed towards Bulls with a detour to Scott’s Ferry. Enjoyed the history lesson. A favourite from us. Thanks.
Day two of my road trip from Auckland to Nelson in my newly acquired convertible cachemobile. Finding a few caches along the way. After checking into a motel in Bulls where I decided to stay for the night, I took advantage of the long summer daylight hours to go out a find a 'few' more caches. I headed for this area as it seemed to have a few trails and caches of interest. And this was definitely a spot of history I'd never have known about with the cache to bring me here. TFTC, Biggles.
For quite some time now I had been wanting to have a crack at doing all those tempting caches around the Ohakea Airforce Base, and if possible to take a drive down towards Tangimoana to check out the plethora of green dots around there too, and thanks to the great weather and a free afternoon, today became that day.
What an interesting, if mainly tragic, history those horses had in service! There was no stock there today so I was able to walk up to the memorial and enjoy a contemplative moment before returning to GZ to make the find. All was fine with the cache itself.
Thanks for bringing this piece of NZ history to my attention.

Day 3/9 of our New Years trip up to the North Island. This was find #45/100 for the day and #114/526 of our trip.
Today was a numbers run of mostly PnG caches. We started in Palmy and set off to see if we could Spell, then headed up to Bulls and after that rounded up a few Smurfs, Herbs, Airplanes, Railway stations and anything else along the way until we came in to finish the KAS trail we started in Oct 2016. Cool horse shoe on the fence. The overcast clouds is messing with reception abit but there was no stock so we went for it and found it no problem. We left our new signature item, a Rainbow Beadtail. Thanks for the effort involved in placing and creating this cache for all of us to enjoy.

Up for the Mega for the week, had a great day in the Bulls and the sunrounding areas many thanks to the cache placer's - Bitsprayer
Heading to Wellington Mega a day earlier with Squirrel Nutcase and NZ Flossy a day earlier.
Out to collect caches that we have previously passed.
So sorry cache owners, we had a fairly large find today so it's a copy and paste day.
Thanks everyone for their cache placements that we found. SLTFTC

WENZ Mega Weekend is almost here... Motoring south today with Gap (of Fap and Gap), and NZFlossy. Our intention is to cache our way to our accommodation in Lower Hutt... The big news of the day is that Highway 1 is closed at Pukerua Bay. A truck crash and chemical spill have shut down all lanes coming to and from Wellington. We have plenty of caches to find to keep us occupied, but this could be a long wait...
Friday: We have had our eye on these multiple hides to the south of Bulls. It's nice to be able to visit in great weather and with pleasant rural views. This section was busy with a few logging trucks moving through the area. TFTC.

On my way to the mega with Squirrel Nutcase and Fap and Gap. Having lots of fun and enjoying the ride and the scenery. It’s what I love about caching - great company and visiting great places. Thanks to all the COs for all their caches Hopefully we see some of them at the mega this weekend TFTC
Since i was passing by Bulls for the first time in over a year I swung by here and added a nice shiney new logbook. Thanks to everyone that (almost) filled the first one.
It was interesting to read about Bess and the other horses' travels overseas in wartime, and to see the memorial to this much travelled horse. The cache was a fairly quick find. The log was damp, but usable. TFTC
A good place for a cache here, and one my mate spudnz talked about placing a few years ago, and never got round to. Well done on making it a real cache. A nice little tribute and area and after heading up to the memorial I chased my own tail for a few minutes until the G P S settled down and showed me where. All good and replaced as found.
Glad to see that the dwarves momma is back online and in place and I can also complete the remaining mar1sa caches down these back roads. Last time I was down here I was on a limited timeline so just grabbed the low-hanging fruit. This time I could add some flavour and add some herbs to the mix.

After rounding up some caching sheep on the way here via backroads from Wanganui, I diverted into Marton for a couple more whilst 'on the way' to Bulls. A few years ago I found Marton's first cache and there weren't many here then, now there are a few - which is nice.
Day 4 and it's a day to grab a few numbers just for the numbers. With too many late starts and lie-ins I decided to get up with the lark (8 o clock) and head out after a quick n easy breakfast. I grabbed quite a few sheep, some herbs to accompany them as well as a revisit to a couple of previous DNFs. Over 30 finds for the day and a good day to be out and about in the Spring sunshine, and occasional raindrops.
Thanks to all the CO s for their hides.
I have had some holiday leave booked for a while now and we are heading North on the ferry, along with the Cache-Qai, and off to Rangitikei to visit our daughter, her partner and our son. First time this many members of the family have been together for a few years so should be good. The plan was half day in work followed by heading off after lunch, then arriving early evening in W(h)anganui to catch up with kids. We're on the North island for a week so there will sure to be some cache found whilst in the area. My Marlborough and Tasman finds have been inching slowly but surely towards my Manawatu/Rangitikei finds but this trip will be sure to redress that balance again for a few more years I'm sure.

My bag, jacket, and food have been stolen the day before from the car, but thanks to Popmac I had batteries and some cache to keep myself busy until the flight in the evening. So that's what I did! I decided to find as many as possible with the petrol I had and driving without the driver side window. It did rain and hail some in the morning, but then it cleared up and it was all good except the wind! Thanks for all the caches along the way that helped me keep my sanity TFTC!!
Out and about with Taybee, Taybee NZ and Team Geocacher Mr. T finding caches. The plan today was to get 50 or so finds towards the Hidden Creatures Souvenir Challenge. For most of the day we had fine weather, but for some of the time it was rather wet. This did not dampen our spirits. To save space (and time) the logs were signed TB/NZ/FD. Thank you to all the COs for placing the caches. My apologies for the generic log.

Thank you Bess. I searched for this cache but couldn't put my hands on it. I decided to go to the memorial and ask for help and upon my return I placed my hands on the cache straight away. It had been buried by the vegetation very well but thanks to Bess I was gladly signing the log.

A morning geocaching with JonoS, Haydnseek and myself. A cold wind blowing but the ground was dry and it did not rain. A few DNF but the rest with straight forward finds exactly where we expected to find them. Thank you for bringing us to this area.

I have for a long time wanted to find this memorial. and somehow i never seemed to locate it when i was in the area. but today along with all the smurfs and spices this was a MUST and was very easy to9 locate. Have the signs always been there??? we located the cache and thejh went up the rise to the memorail and took photos which i will log soon. This one has to have a fav from me as my middle name is as the horse's so a special find for me!
I set out early to meet up with Jono and MJMNZ at Bulls but on the way decided to check on some of my own caches and do any required maintenance. Happily all was well with these caches and even the one i had taken a new container with me i decided was best left as it was as it blended beautifully with the surrounds as it was. The day was quite cool when we started but as the day went on it got quite warm although if you were in the wind there was still a bite in the wind.
We had a fairly successful day with just 4 DNF except they were all at the far end of the journey and the roads we were to travel on. MJMNZ had packed us a morning tea with lovely shortbread and then a lovely croissant and ham lunch etc etc all very welcomed after an early morning start. All the roads were tar sealed which was pleasing.
Thank you for this cache AND ANOTHER SMILEY FACE. Thank you.

A stop on today's caching mission with ETHNZ. A fascinating bit of history that I had no idea existed, thank you for bringing me here - TFTC & a very well deserved FP. Rest easy Bess.
Thank you for all the interesting information about 'Bee'. As they was no stock around we climbed to the memorial to read the English inscription.

Time for another geocaching trip with my matey 2 Bulbars, having just lost our good geocaching buddy Priceless Time (Michael Price) we decided that the best thing we could do was a weekend out caching in his memory. RIP Priceless, our thoughts are with you on your caching journey. So, after a quick drive down from New Plymouth we got into the caches: on Day 1, first to the west of Bulls then to the East and South finally into Fielding for the night and a few urban caches. Day 2 work our way back north and east to the CITO at the Rangiwahia bush track. Then back out to civilisation and home. So for this one it’s mission accomplished, this one is a wrap.TFTC! #9094. Parked just outside the clearly signed gate on Forest Road in Parewanui. We could spot the memorial from the road. The farmer was working on his tractor nearby spreading fertilisers in the paddock. A quick wave and we made the entry. The farmer must be used to having visitors to this site, and there did not seem to be any problem of us being there.
Our GPS led us to an unlikely spot, where we had a quick look and started to look wider for where the hiding place might be. Made the find after a short search. The cache was in good condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.
We went to have a closer look at the memorial afterwards.

#3845. I had the day off work so decided I needed another road trip to wrap up a very busy month (of geocaching). I am working on the DGSC challenge and foolishly decided to go for the bulk find elective which needs 1500+ cache finds in the year. But one month needed 300+ finds and I was close enough to that target in March so went for it today to get the remaining 61 caches I needed. These are exactly the types of caches I most enjoy about geocaching. A place you would otherwise never find or visit but has a really interesting piece of our history associated with it. Read some logs to check it was OK to enter the paddock as that was where the GPS suggested the cache was hidden. Quick find and sign of the cache then headed up to visit Bess's memorial stone and plaque. This cache holds a lot of significance to me as my grandfather was a member of the Wellington Mounted Rifle Brigade in 1914 and went with his horse to Egypt in WW1 and then on to Gallipoli (where they didn't have their horses) and back to fight in the other campaigns in Palestine area. I never heard what happened to his horse but my grandfather was wounded and evacuated back to NZ. Thanks for hiding the cache here. Favourite awarded.
Called here as part of a day's caching in the Manawatu area in fine warm weather. After lunch at Bulls I headed down towards Scotts Ferry where there was an abundance of caches to find along the way. I really enjoyed this cache, a great story and bit of history that I would otherwise have been completely unaware of. I wasn't sure at first whether I should be on private property or not, but then when I saw the memorial up the hill I figured I was OK. Went for a walk up to the memorial, met two ladies on the way who had seen the signpost back at the road junction and had come to investigate. They had no knowledge of the history so I read them a bit from the cache notes to fill them in. The cache wasa quick find although the coordinates were about 10 metres out for me. Signed log, TFTC and it's worth a favourite point
This was always going to be a bit of a caching trip in the company once again of HKCB. Having though about it and done a fair bit of planning over the past couple of weeks this was a chance for a reasonable clean out of an area that we don't normally get to. So with families in mind, rather than setting out on the Friday evening we left home at 2am on the Saturday morning to make our way south before either the heat of the day or there was too much traffic on the road.
Some stats for the weekend
- Distance Traveled = 1457 kms
- Petrol = 3 x Fills
- Time Away from Home = 42 hours
- Straight Driving Time = 6 hours
- Sleep = 4 hours
- Caches Found = 250
- DNF's = 3
So after a straight forward drive down here this was the first that we located of what was going to be a very long day, and followed by another very long day.
While I apologize that these are 'copy & paste" logs, I would just like to say thank you to all the CO's that have have put out and maintained these caches for us out of 'non-locals' to find. It was a great weekend and we traveled though some amazing countryside.
A key learning from the weekend was that a Mazda CX5 is not designed to ford rivers.
So thank you for the placement, thank you for the cache.

On a weekend mission with Cats&Dragons, for a bit of a numbers run along the new trails around the Northern Manawatu area, and anything else along the way. As usual these types of trips mean maximizing caching time and minimizing sleep time. So with a 2am start time Saturday morning we left home and headed South, and not getting back home til 8.30pm Sunday night. Some numbers for the trip as I know we all like caching stats are:
* 1450km traveled.
* 286 caches found (192 on Saturday, 94 on Sunday) with only 3 DNF's
* 4 hours sleep
* With a 3 hour each way drive to the Caching area, so about 32 hours of caching in the 42 hours we were away at an average of nearly 9 caches per hour, this isn't including stopping for fuel and coffee!!!
So a huge thanks to all the CO's for the placements, and for the reason to see some more of our wonderful country, we saw some pretty amazing places. Sorry for the copy and paste logs. We signed the log books HKCD, or HKCBC&D.

Found with Tramper Ted. Thanks KiwiDragonfly for the interesting history, something different
Found with Edvern after orienteering training in the forest. Kind of sad to read about the horses who went to war, and the history of Bess. Thanks for sharing this with us. TFTC
It was only at an ANZAC day service last year that I learned that so many horses from New Zealand were involved in World War ! and that so few returned. I was quite shocked. Thanks for bringing this history and the memorial to the notice of the geocaching community.
Apologies for the generic log — Team B&D are up from Wellington to do the 142 caches in 24 hours challenge. TFTC and a great set of power trails up here!
A nice early start this morning for tmann421 and I. A full day of geocaching ahead and making our way to the annual Rattl Christmas BBQ at lunchtime. A quick find here. TFTC
Found with barefootguru as part of the 142 in 24 hour cache challenge (GC5EAAX). Sorry for the generic log. TFTC
Fun driving around the area today with Just-Lookin.

Had some business out of town so that done looked to see if I could find Snow White and her Seven Dwarfs, do a Smurf Head Count, check out some erbs and while in the area find this cache as well.
Got to the gate and was a little concerned about the cache being quite a way into the property however saw the memorial atop the hill as well so followed the GPSr to GZ where the cache was quickly spotted, retrieved, log signed and then left as found.
As I was shutting the gate a vehicle pulled up and the driver asked was all ok, explained I had been checking out the memorial, then we were both on our way again.
Was aware of this unique piece of NZ history but had not visited the site so thanks for bringing me here. Gets a FP for the history and for recognising the part the horses played in WW1.

An interesting bit of history. No trouble finding the cache the ground was surprising firm considering the weather of late. TFTC
What an interesting read that was, but rather sad for many of the horses involved. Thank you for bringing me out to the resting place of Bess and drawing our attention to it. tftf.

Today, along with D6NZ, we were attempting to get ruby in the "Daily cacher" feat by logging 120 caches in a single day.
There were a number of trails in the area that we had already eaten into, so while we could hit pockets we lost precious time travelling as we ventured to each new hot spot. Today we planned on west of Bulls, north of Ohakea, skirting Halcombe and Fielding, then topping it off south of Himitangi.
Having now completed the dwarfs and smurfs we picked up this find (18th of the day) on the way to the herbs.
Cheers.

Planned a days caching around a goal of logging 120 caches today to obtain a ruby feat. Unfortunately some of the runs available I had already eaten into during normal
caching days which meant I had to target a few trails with 50 or more minutes travelling time between them, chewing up precious daylight hours.
Left home at 6:30 got back well after 9pm. it was a long day.
I targeted three areas, Bulls, Feilding, and Himitangi.

A quick find while completing the Snow White, Smurf and Herb series. Thanks for the series. TFTC
In the area hunting down 200 plus finds today as a group, so finding trails was a great help for the goal.... we managed a cool 206 today final count, so target achieved.....
This one had a few of the group concerned including myself as it appeared to be on private land...but we were determined not to leave any cache behind (unfound).... over the fence we dive and confronted by a paddock of your steers.... and I was wearing a red jacket ..... having been brought up on a farm was not too concerned but it sure entertained many of the team as the young steers came closer to investigate....Just as the cache was found a group of very curious bovines got really close and fast so I took protective measures and jumped onto a railing which added more entertainment... all in all a fun find...

In the Manawatu for the weekend with some caching buddies- Uncle Sam, NZTravellers, Stik-a-crane, HeMaLuDy. The goal was to find as many of the caches in the area as we could in the space of a day, and we all had a blast jumping in and out of the cars, racing each other to the caches, and laughing and joking along the way, and in we general had an awesome weekend down here.
After a while we started playing "musical cars"- and would race each other back to the cars in order to vie for prime position.... or just to pip someone else at the post..... it was rather hilarious, mainly because of the creative ways of piling into cars or sneaking in just before someone else when you knew they were aiming for that seat. One or two people may have accidently (or not so accidentally) have got sat on!!!!!
This cache was rather memorable, as it required a closer encounter with a few bovines than we had planned on today! We had a few jokes about one of our gangs red jacket, and laughted at him about having a big target on his back as a result! Luckily, the animals were more interested in the grass than in us, although we did get one or two curious looks as the cache was found!
