Logs
26 October 2024 11:34This is the second cache for the day, which I am logging first so as dalerious can claim over 5 years unloved: we take it in turns .We turned off Wabonga Track onto McMillan's, not knowing what to expect. We were not sure what state the track was in, and if it had a gate at the beginning. The track was in perfect condition. Well, there was no gate, so we decided to drive past all the other caches we were hoping to sign today, and park up where we knew a gate would be.We enjoyed a coffee as we packed a backpack ready with what we needed for our adventure. The walk along the MVO track was very pleasant, and again we decided to head past the other caches and start at the last in the line. This cache was awesome! For this one, we decided to follow the escarpment all the way from the Earthcache . I think we chose wisely here, as it gave us a good idea on what to expect, and how to tackle the other caches. We were very glad to report that we have enough knowledge and fitness to be able to undertake and successfully find this type of cache, without recklessness, as free climbers. When we arrived at approximate gz, we studied the geological feature and had an idea where to start, before scaling the face to the right level.Because of my short stature, dalerious and I have to take extra time to pick the right access point for us both to get to the prize. There is no rushing caches like this; time is needed not only to be able to access the right area and doing it in a safe manner, but the view and the feeling of freedom is something to savour. So don't rush it.The only other thing I need to mention is, and I think it is the most important thing to say: Come and experience the beauty for yourself. Plan the trip, grab what you need, and come and enjoy what Jamin Appleford has provided for us here to enjoy .Favourite point given .
26 October 2024 11:35amYes. We did. .... and we enjoyed a well earned snack too. After visiting posted coords of the Earth Cache, catnap777 and I battled our way along the lower section of the escarpment till we finally reached this rather impressive piece of geology. From previous logs we assumed the bottom end was the better place to start our search, but as it turned out, approaching posted coords, we kind of found we had inadvertantly found ourselves about halfway up the escarpment anyway, and reaching the top was no more unattainable than reaching the bottom. We started checking levels and after ruling out the rediculously sketchy ones, it was third time lucky. So the big hint to future hunters is....If you are standing somewhere perilous, the cache isnt there. [xx(] Try another level or get there from another direction. You dont need ropes but you dont need to die either. [B)] As usual, once we had cache in hand, finding the route out was much easier and safe passage was made back up to the top of the escarpment and back through the scrub out onto the MVO track. [^]Oh, did we mention.... The view was freaking awesome. TFTC Jamin, another Fav for sure. [^]
Another visit to another cache we tried many years ago. This time with a bit more experience and risk appetite. Completely overthought the previous logs and hints and ended up on a sketchy ledge with an over curious brush tailed possum who I thought was going to push me off the edge. Anyway a quick phone call and we were changing tact. Cache was a lot further down the escarpment than I thought. But it was a lot safer than the spot I was previously in. Really easy find at GZ. Cache was in good condition even after almost 7 years unloved. Good spot to sit down and have some lunch before continuing on. TFTC
What a shame.
It was the holidays and with nothing planned for this day, I started convincing those family members who are old enough to drive that we should go caching for the day. Eventually, the nagging payed off and a trip to paradise falls and powers lookout was planned with hiking, bushbashing and riding with Bulldog! Only condition, I have to choose what caches to do.
While riding our bikes along the track, this one was only 100 metres off the track. 10 minutes of thick scrub later we arrived at the site. As the GPS was pointing 20 metres away from the top, we went around the back to the next level, still 15 metres away, skirted around to the next level. Now we were thirty metres away pointing out to a spot that I'm not sure we'd be able to get to. So, for safety and times sake, we went back up and... sat and enjoyed the view.
Not sure if you can add favourite points for DNF's because it was such a good spot.
TFTC anyway.

Sadly not this time. We really had a good shot at this one, but after a while of trecking around the escarpment, we weren't getting any luckier. So for sake of our safety we decided to move on for the day. But just have to thank Jamin Appleford for the amazing place this is hidden, the view was sensational. TFTH anyway
Winner of the most randomly placed hide for 2017.
The bananas now have 250 meters of rope. That is enough to climb Dandongadale from top to botton. Having to much of a thing causes less deaths than not enough.
And every bit of it was used here. Close to the correct coordinates all the different altitudes could be checked, as we decended, swinging like a pendulum on a clock.
Finally.
The bananas are besotted by these adventures.
Years of reconnaissance, planning, anticipation and success. Sleeping well is on the cards tonight, even with Xmas just around the corner.
One day Jamin Appleford will tell us the truth about this placement. That he did use ropes to gain access. For once we found the little treasure, the fall below was significantly greater than the 20 meters earlier predicted. Looking around there is no other way to get here than from "Up There". It was again a greater than 12 hour effort to get it, but sometimes the journey is worth all the effort. That is just what the bananas do.
So what is next?

So what is next?
My use of the word cave in the description may be slightly misleading. To clarify, the small 'cave' you're looking for is only big enough to fit the cache.
There is a solid ledge to stand on at GZ, look toward the cliff face and find the 'cave'.
I hope this helps future cachers

Working my way along the cliff line from the previous two caches, within 20m (horizontally) of this at 6:36pm.
Then down the slope (ouch). Everything in this terrain is ready and willing to slide down the slope.
Went along at a few different levels before identifying what I thought was probably the correct cave.
The ledge out to the cave was narrow and cramped. I started along it and re-considered and retreated a few times, before finally giving up at 7:04pm. There were just a couple of metres of it out of my minimum level of comfort zone (especially since I was alone and had no safety gear)
Looked like the view would have been good from the cave. Don't know if it was the right one. Good views were had regardless.
Retreat to the main track was very strenuous/painful, the terrain did not want me to escape.
It was just about sunset when I finally got to the track, and practically dark by the time I got to my car at Paradise Falls Carpark at 8:25pm.
Today, everything hurts a little. Great adventure.

This is a decent walk.
Lovely area
And with so much water around, colours to delight all those treking.
Then the disappointment.
The locator indicates it is only 10 meters away.
Ok
Only problem is the arrow is pointing to nothing.
Ok
It is a terrain 4.5 so the bananas will have to go down there.
Ok
Well an hour later while hanging onto loose rocks inside a cave overhanging a 20 meter cliff a decision is made.
Back to Paradise we go to get some climbing (safety) equipment.
Anyway the rope were tied to a rock that was supposed to be secure, the edge we checked.
Now secured, from the large cave 4m away we traversed to the smaller cave along this small edge.
Many hours later including a 5km walk suprising for the bananas this effort was fruitless.
After previously seeing the owner scramble over rocks where the bananas had used climbing equipment it had not been unexpected the treasure would not be where we looked. Today we again experienced the fear like being 80m up the shear face of Arapalies while looking for another treasure.
When the bananas were lucky enough to discover all the high peaks in Canberra there were spoiler pictures to emphasize the journey and not the find. But not here. Finding this would still be a huge battle.
We gave this a red hot go but fear had beaten us.
And like at the Arapalies.
We found nothing before that was eventually archived.
