Well this has been on the list for a very long time, and with ski season closed, we are leaving the area, so today was finally the day to go break into jail. Thankfully the coordinates were spot on and the hint obvious, allowing for a quick find & escape, relatively unscathed. TFTC!
Mr Pazza was having none of this and left me to face this slammer alone. This will definitely remain one of my more memorable caches. I grimly hung onto my phone and pen I had to sign this as evidence in case I never made it out again. I found the hint item area but nearly gave up my hunt (wishing I had Mr Pazza as backup) Luckily I persevered and felt so pleased not to remain in purgatory at the penitentiary! F/p
I had read up well on this before getting here, but really it's just do it here. Parked alongside and entered the maze, and counted down the numbers. Found a few potential options, then eventually the right one and spotted the container after turning my back then turning around, Good coordinates here and a fun find. Gaol indeed, jail more like.I have (another) long weekend away from home starting Friday, destination is Turangi. Our work has a team-building day on Friday with Whitewater rafting in teams followed by Tokaanu hot-pools and shared lunch. It was a double banger event with half the people doing Wednesday and the remainder on Friday. As chance would have it I'd already identified this weekend as a weekend away at Turangi and booked the work bach to stay in Friday and Saturday night. That was fortunate as I drove myself up on Friday morning and stayed the weekend. I brought a work push-bike along too with the hope to cover more ground, and so it was. I found almost all of my target caches and a decent haul was made. Waking up Sunday morning to overnight rain and fog across the Desert Road left me glad I'd done most finding on Friday and Saturday. Thanks to all COs for their efforts hiding, especially Funkymunkyzone. I even bumped into another caching couple on the trails on Saturday, nice to meet you cympull and fisha1288.
Parking was not the best here but a lot easier than finding the cache, as one of the previous logs said trust the GPS we did and using the hint soon had what we were looking for in our hand, log signed and replaced as found. Escaping the bamboo was the next mission and it wasn't long before we returned to the car.Found with matagouri. And rattl (they had found it previously no help though and they didn't remember ever being here before) .Thanks for the placement and the smiley.
Easter at Turangi with rattll and Watcache. After a couple of cooler days, the clear warm weather today is most welcome. Parked nearby, but soon realised that a parking spot for this cache was the least of our problems. Bamboo. Give me flax, any day! Worked our way in to the patch, looking for any signs of a path. Not seeing it, we continued to GZ as best we could. After going around in circles for some time, watcache called that he'd found it. Finally! Signed, and returned as found. Tftc!
Omg... What a mission... But we made it and escaped jail. Definitely not near the water edge haha - trust the gps! T.f.t.f
Difficult to get to GZ but soon spotted a good entry and off we went. We made sure to take our time to make sure we werent appart of injured group of cachers. We ended up only having Minor scratches. After a bit of weaving the cache was soon locatedI placed the cache carefully back as found. TFTC. Thanks funkymunkyzone for this Traditional cache! funkymunkyzone , !Logged on 10 January 2024 at 12:12PM#823th find
Was if those caches that the getting back to the car is the real satisfaction !!!Very memorable regardless! Thanks
We were heading home to the Kpiti Coast after a few days in the Waikato. Id previously considered attempting this cache but didnt really know where to start. Today I found a track which appeared to head in the direction of the cache. Little did I know how thick the bamboo would be and how much frustration would be involved in getting to GZ! It really wasnt a whole lot of fun. I eventually made it to the general vicinity of the cache, taking 15 minutes or so to cover a relatively short distance. Took another few minutes to actually locate the cache itself. Fortunately I managed to get out of there on a somewhat easier route than Id taken to get in! My advice would be to enter the vegetation as closely as possible to where your coords are indicating GZ to be. Avoid what looks to be a promising track which starts a little further along the road towards the lake. #6871. TFTC (I think!).
A very wet day to go out geocaching, but if one wants to keep a found streak alive you will do anything in order to have a find
This has to be the best and worst Geocache lol. Excellent place for a hide, very disorienting inside GZ. Took a bit of searching to locate, but trusted my geosenses and soon had the container in hand. All good with the cache. Log signed and replaced
Took a few wrong turns on the way out, very wet under foot, but I have escaped Gaol without being seen and live to cache another day.
Favourite point from me.

Took a while to navigate the bamboo maze. The smallish clearing helped point to the GZ. It's been on my to do list for a while. SL TFTC. Cache and log all good.
Got to what felt like the correct area, but didn't find a cache. But what a fun experience, thank you for making me go in here!
Such a cool place to explore and find a cache! Came out with a few prickles on hands tho! Probably the best cache find of the day!
One of the most fun caches I’ve ever done loved it
The only thing that Goal gave me was much laughter and the itches

Far out! Long sleeves and long pants a must. We went in too far down and therefore gave up from the pain. Need a swim after this.
I was making a quick detour from my usual route driving from Wellington to Rotorua, and spotted this interesting looking cache. I wended my way into the maze and had to check my position several times as I became disoriented. I spotted something on the ground just as I had thought I might be close to GZ, but assumed it was rubbish! Had to take a second look before realising it was the cache. Popped out about 10m along the road from where I entered.
I’d recommend wearing long-sleeved pants and a top. It was 30 degrees so I was in a t shirt, but I have what feels like carpet burn on my arms from the bamboo. Oops. TFTC

March has been such a busy month, but not so much with getting out and about to indulge in finding some caches for myself. So what better way to remedy this than have a few days away in an area not previously cached out?
Cue a weekend of touring around the Tongariro National Park in good company. Exactly what I needed, and a weekend that would see me find over a hundred caches, including getting my 4000th, as well as grabbing some of the new PWGT caches.
I knew this would be a long day, both starting and finishing in the dark, but I hadn't quite expected to be out caching for 16 hours straight lol. But it was a very productive and interesting day, so it was all worth it in the end.
Tokaanu thermal area has been a favourite of mine for many years. I used to bring my lad to Turangi/Tokaanu years ago during each mid-winter school holiday and used to stay at the old Post Office just 2 doors up from this new cache, when it used to be a Book-a-bach property. But I've not really spent much time here since being a geocacher, apart from an occasional flying visit to grab a cache of particular interest.
So today was a great chance to mop up some of the ones missed previously. I'm not sure why I haven't attempted this one before, but having now done it I sure know why I may not attempt it again! My word, that was a demanding challenge to navigate around in there , trying to find a path of least resistance lol. I was glad of my buddy today, as him being a previous finder definitely helped . Once located, I was able to sign the log and retrieve the geocoin found within before the whole thing replaced exactly as found.
Thanks for setting up this cache. I've ummed and ahhed about whether to award a FP as I didn't particularly enjoy the journey per se, but in the end I do believe in variety and novelty and this definitely ticks those boxes so it does get a FP from me
Went in for a little explore not sure If I was keen to get in but had a great time what a crazy experience. Think I crushed some bamboo though.
Almost left my geocaching buddy to do this one without me but very cool once inside. In desperate need of a shower and wee break after that one. May have bush bashed a bit more than needed and bamboo was in some places it definitely shouldnt have been. Tftc
From the roadside, this looks very daunting, but once you get in there - it's an amazing experience, and considerably more doable than I expected. I started about 10-15m towards the main road than the obvious 'hole', which worked out well. It took a couple of loops around where the GPS said GZ was to find the obvious hiding spot. Great fun, thanks.
So the break into jail was rather quick and going well until we lost our bearings and the gps started jumping. Haha. From there we searched up and down a few times until we found the cache. Our way out was somewhat difficult and thorny. Found ourselves with a bunch of thorns on our arms and legs. We would recommend long sleeves. The cache is unlike any we have completed before. Tftc
Yesterday when we arrived at the jail we didn't have torches to plan our escape. Today we were awarded torches by the high court and managed to break free! Thanks for the adventure. Lots of fun even after sunset. My partner in crime was PeanutButterBaby. SL TFTC FP
I did my waiting! Twelve years of it, in Azkaban!
I finally escaped but definitely wouldn't recommend going in with shorts Got a nasty rash all over my legs. Must have been my punishment for escaping the prison.

Loved going into this bamboo maze and finding this cache. One of my favorite finds as such different terrain from any other find. TFTC and putting it in such a challenging and interesting place.
Found with TipsyTrout on a day trip from Taupo. Almost got psyched out from reading previous logs but so glad we went for this. Terrain was not bad at all and we loved the jail break challenge. Thanks so much for placing and maintaining this awesome cache!
Great spot. Lots of fun breaking in. Spent my time circling around trying to get a good gps fix. Found cache and made my break.
On our last day before departure, went to look for some caches with HairyHarry. With some tenacity and elbow grease, we fought our way in. The cache was quickly spotted and logged and the way out felt like a highway compared to the way in. Great spot, well done. Favo from us!
This took me about 20mins in total... approx 16mins blundering around, about 1min signing the log & 3mins to escape from the jail. Fortunately there weren't too many horizontal bars in this correctional facility... but there vertical ones more than made up for this.
I'VE DONE MY TIME! Thanks so much for this geocaching adventure today!
Find number 450 for us and also gets a favourite point from thebigflax family.

We are attending a dog related event on Sunday in Wellington so have combined that with a couple of other things and decided on a road trip as having a car is going to be sooo much easier. And on a long road trip you need to get out and stretch a bit from time to time and what better way than to stop for a cache? After breaking into jail it took a moment to get our bearings - we haven't been in jail before after all - and then GAR found the right spot to visit before breaking our way out again. None of the pesty items mentioned in previous logs so not a long visit.
How do you find spots such as these?
How do you find spots such as these?
Now this is fun. What geocaching is all about! Wish I found the easy way in!
Goodness gracious me, there's enjoyable caches, and challenging caches and downright difficult caches. Not sure what combination of challenges that this falls into but judging by the welts and stings I have on my arms and hands I can definitely attest to having do some serious time to get this geocache.
Got to GZ eventually (dreaded thinking about breaking out) and spotted the hint item after quite a bit of a search. Missed the cache on the first look but feeling sure that this is what the CO meant spotted it on a second look - oh my, the relief. Signed in a replaced the cache. Others mentioned an easier way out - I didn't see one so did it the hard way again. Had the heebie jeebies imagining a dropped set of keys or something and having to go back.
So relieved to make the break out. Enough to scare me straight. Thanks for the cache (I think).

Got to this interesting place late afternoon to quickly grab the cache. Took a bit longer but we had a lot of fun navigating to and from the cache. Cool idea. TFTC. Sherlock Hood.

Well this was just plain nuts. Well covered except our arms. Had no idea how many little buggers get in bare skin. Still feel them like little pins. Lol. Fight our way through. Get to a spot check a couple options. Nothing. Almost gave up and about to admit defeat when Ta da! There it is. Lol. Thankfully found our way out quickly. Not sure I should say tftc... But yes tftc.
Staying in the area tonight, this was a successful but uncomfortable find!

Ryan offered to sacrifice himself for this one, did a stellar job in shorts, tshirt and jandals and managed to get away with a couple of nettle stings and that was it. Nice quick find by him and as always there was an easier way back. TFTC
Find number 4648. Thought this would be an easy one but it was nothing like I expected. After parking up I thought I must be in wrong place but I found a track which I followed and realized I was on the right path. My GPS help me navigate the maze of bars until I got to GZ. A look but nothing. Tried another place. Nothing there either. Back to original and with a change of angle I finally spotted it. Pleased to sign and then find my way out again. Enjoyed the cache. Thank you for the placement.
And I did not enjoy it. On my own, I got GZ bit could not spot it and the growth was huge so definitely not on my list to attempt again.
What a great cache. We had 10 of us hunting for this one, fun all round. Definitely wear long trousers and shirt, we've been digging out splinters for days. The prize for the biggest splinter goes to our lady, we dug this 1 inch special out of her leg later in the afternoon.
What an awesome cache, really enjoyed this one.

Definitely a favorite!! It all made sense as we approached GZ. What an interesting spot, we took lots of photos, but it just can't capture the feeling of being completely surrounded... great hide! Thanks for placing it and Hello from Duluth, Minnesota!
TFTC Favorite 1st of the day as we (aix sponsa and mocrin) enjoy another New Zealand day! Sure was a fun one today. Gaol for sure!
Caching with lostcheq and Mocrin. Not sure what to expect here as I have never been in gaol. Mazes and gaol indeed describe this location well. I was almost at the cache but couldn't reach it. I was in gaol. I reached through the bars and handed Mocrin a pathtag and trackable. Thanks much for the fun!
Felt like we took the longest route to reach this. Really enjoyed the challenge and realisation of the cache name..... now to find my way out!
Out and about in an area we have spent some time in back in time and grabbing some caches as we go.
Saw this cache and the logs and thought I will take a look and see how we go. Made my crooked way to GZ where the cache was found after a short search - TNLNSL and left as found.
Made my way out again thinking that was not too bad, bamboo is a tad thick, got plenty of GeoStripes to show for it as a result.
Thanks for the placement.

This was an unexpectedly spooky kind of place

He kept saying 'ask the CO if the lid is blah blah colour ' I kept responding I can't do that
When I eventually found it he gloated saying I knew the lid was blah blah colour, of course he'd already found it
I left a travel bug

Out with Red Roaming as we tour NZ, having a wonderful time on these Islands. another lovely sunny day. Log signed with our initials (DD & RR)or full caching names. apologies for my lateness in logging of this cache.
RR had no problems finding this one, once we'd worked out how to get into the Gaol. I don't think that we took the best route and breaking out again was much easier!!!!. TFTC and have a fav point too

Cache eventually found by grit determination...and possibly a few descriptive non- complimentary words about GZ (and possibly even some more about the CO, but I perhaps shouldn't mention that as we have just visited a few of his nearby earth caches....!). The hint is very accurate!
Favourite point - we bear the physical scars, and perhaps mental ones too, BUT we have a smiley here!

#117 Found with my mum Gr33nslime and perhaps my dad JimmyNZ. Trying the mass logging thing with GSAK hence the really general log entry!
Gr33nslime, DangerSAM and I decided to have a belated break from work and came up this way for a get away from our usual haunts down in the Manawatu. Luckily we have some friends with a bach around in Omori so we were able to stay there and enjoy some great weather. Almost every day we were able to get out and cache around the local area. Some locals have placed some interesting caches in places that we have not been before. We’ve been amazed by how many caches have taken us a few more steps off a well worn track to see some great little gems of New Zealand. We’ve been coming here for many years and these caches have been a cool way to explore the local area in a lot finer detail. With DangerSAM now playing the game with us it’s been good to take him along to these new places, many are kid friendly. Our muggle friends even enjoyed the distractions when every so often we’d veer them off the path to get a cache on out on our many outings. My thanks to the caches in this area, they have put some great little finds together and are very much worth a visit.
This cache was a quick grab on the way out after getting two others. Gr33nslime looked after DangerSAM in the car and I made the promise that if it took me any longer than 5 minutes i'd give up. Armed with a t-shirt, shorts and jandals (minus safety socks) I plunged into the likely entrance and made my way into the maze. I found the easiest way to get through the bars (when not following the maze) was to enter the diver position and force my way through. Only lost a jandal a few times. In the end the cache was quickly found, nice and dry and I was on my way. Thanks for taking me here. What a random day.

# 922 JimmyNZ had some time off work, and DangerSAM and myself were keen to get out of the house, so we went on a holiday to the shores of Lake Taupo from Palmerston North, and caching was to be big on the agenda!
Had never been down this road before, despite coming to Turangi a heap when I was a kid. JimmyNZ made the find, while i fed DangerSAM in the back of the car, on the side of the road, hoping like hell that JimmyNZ would hurry up so we didnt get mauled by mosquitoes. I hear it was quite rough in there, JimmyNZ still bears the injuries. Thanks fmz for another hide that was particularly random, and with a rather scary D/T combo.

doing a clean up of caches this way that I have been wanting to do for a little while, as we needed to pick up kaleb a day trip was the perfect time, started out at 7.30am and got home about 8pm one thing us geocachers understand is that is it is never a quick trip when there is caching involved, thanks for the placement sorry about the copy and paste logs but it was getting hard to remember some of them. thanks for the placement we have enjoyed stopping at every single one.
didnt take us to long to find, came out with lots of little spikes in my hand though which I spent the rest of the day getting out, but we had a lot of fun finding this one gets a fav point from us

Out this evening finding some caches while on holiday in the area. This was a challenge but hubby came correctly dressed (see pic). Certainly long pants long sleeves and closed shoes are a must. I still got bitten so maybe mossie repellant should be taken. We saw the beginning of a geo trail so knew where to start. After being trapped and several dead ends we found the goal. Thanks for a fun adventure even though a bit rough in places.

So cool! Brought my 81 year old mom along and had her stand where we knew we could breakout once the cache was found. We played a fun game of Marco Polo as I made my way back out of the maze to her. Hoping someone will break the Great Pink Fairy Detectives TB out of the gaol soon so she can fly around to see more of New Zealand and the rest of the world. TFTC from some US cachers!

Heading south once again for work tomorrow where I'm meant to presenting at an industry training conference, so to make up for it I thought I may as well work towards the DGSc Challenge that I'm doing. as to the elective that I chose, that was a real mistake (DT=<2.5), but then I'm almost there so no need to start all over once again.
As I had not made it to the Mega due to work commitments, this was a chance to see what I missed out on by collecting a couple of caches in the area.
What a great placement, after working about how to enter jail it was then a maze to find my way to the otherside. While I made it both in and out I hope the other jail I'm working out will be a little harder to extract ones self from.
Great placement and got in and out without leaving a blood tribute to the journey
thanks for the placement and the cache

What a terrific maze of bamboo. Someone must have planted this a long time ago and now it has really taken over to the point where it dominates quite a large area - certainly nothing else is able to grow where the bamboo has a stranglehold and it really is like being confined.
Made my way slowly and carefully (so as not to impale myself on cut bamboo, as warned) to GZ which only revealed itself within the final few metres, signed the log and then, having rather lost my bearings, had to use the GPS to help break out of the gaol.
Rather enjoyed this one - TFTC fmz.

Together with Fenz i had the pleasure to visit New Zealand. We were traveling around for quite some time and thought: Why not combine that with some geocaching! That doubled the fun and we found a lot nice places we wouldnt have, if we werent looking for the boxes invisible to the other tourists. For details on our cache finds see the logs of Fenz. We want to thank all the owners for their effort, the nice hides and the fun we had on our journey! Definitely gonna come back to you Kiwis, greetings from the other end of the world, keep it on!
Wow! Never had something quite like this before. This is a really special cache and AntiTerrorist and I enjoyed it a lot. Tftc
Wow now that's a cache I'm proud to have found! A bit of a tricky maze but eventually found. Thanks for placing!
The sun finally came out this afternoon and we once again teamed up with urbangypsynz to go and do some of the new local caches. We ended up spending a bit more time in Gaol than our initial sentence, but we eventually managed to find an interesting stash, then break our way out again. Thanks.
This was sort of fun? We used the direct approach from the road, and didn't have to divert too much from a straight line. The cache was a quick find once we reached it. Getting back out proved slightly more difficult as we tried to follow our route in. A somewhat questionable favourite from us. TFTC
Day 3 of Mega 2016!
Today's plan was to head back down towards National Park to do the few walks which were missed yesterday with HPG. Then head back up to Turangi to find a few of the new caches published while in the area before heading back to Taupo, and then onto Rotorua to pick up the family before heading home, caching along the way if time allowed of course.
Switched to the phone and gave the GPS a bit of a rest while I grabbed a few new caches around Turangi. A very cool placement. Stood back had a look to see if I could find a good enterance before I went barging in. Still I did a phillip.perry and got a shoot stuck in the shin. Wandered around for a little bit, but trusted the GPS and a quick find in the obvious spot. Heard a few cars pull up just as I signed the cache. Made it back out before the next lot went through. Thanks for the hide.

Heading home from the MEGA today we heard about this cache as a must do for the kids, both big and small... so a group of us arrived at GZ to make the find...
Awesome cache and placement was well thought out.
Fav. point given.

In town for the MEGA with most of Team SEAC, and as this cache had only juse been published, and we had heard a whisper or two that it was a good one, we decided to stop here to make the fiND before getting ready to head north.
4 or 5 cars pulled up and parked along the road, and we all emerged, with much discussion about the cache, the trip home, a potential detour to the got pools, and which was the best way in. Basically, about 20 people talking at once about a variety of things, and making so much noise that there was absolutely no hope of any stealth being employed at this cache!
We picked what appeared to be the best way in, and one by one, like lemmings, we played follow the leader into the depths. All sorts of helpful advice, exclamations and comments floated back to where I was, near the back. It was rather hilarious..... I wish I could upload videos on the cache page, because the one I took was highly amusing!
Anyway, before long, and possibly after the most snake-like route to a cache I have ever taken (read: with plenty of twists, turns, and winding around!), the navigators at the front seemed to think we were getting close. And so the hunt began. Of course, with so many sets of eyes and hands, the cache couldn't stay hidden for long, and in no time we heard those magical words: "found it!"
Log was signed as Team SEAC, and then began the next part of the expedition....breaking back OUT of jail! Almost as humourous as the trip in, but before long we were standing back on the road, dusting ourselves off and having a good laugh at the fun of it all!!!
Thanks for the fun, FMZ! A lot of fun, and a fave from me.

We were up early this morning and bumped into our fellow team members from the quiz at the mega last night. They said "you have to take purply to this cache, he will love it"(they had done it after the quiz in the dark last night), so it was added to our days plans. We took a number of the members of team seac with us and the log was signed TEAM SEAC to save space. We loved this cache, the children of the group (big and small) really enjoyed finding their way from the roadside to GZ. Favourite point given.
Loved the placement and thought put into this one. We parked and noticed an entrance point so i got on my hands and knees and crawled in. Followed a beaten track a few meters then it was just a matter of blazing my own trail to GZ. Found the cache, signed the log and then decided idf follow my tracklog back to where i started. In theory that was my plan but i just made a beeline for the road. Not quite an easy route but i made it out unscathed. Great cache FMZ, thanks for the fun with this one!
Favourite added.
Time to log our little trip to the Mega in Turangi. Enroute we detoured via Feilding for the Yumfest dinner, a night cache and a bit of puzzle gathering. Of course there were traditionals, a few multis, some earthcaches and lots of coffee stops to endure. Most found with bkj97, Edvern or the crew we stayed with in Turangi. Now of course the task of logging them all becomes a necessity. My apologies for the "cut and paste" logs. I will add favourites where I think it was particularly memorable. Thanks to all the cache owners for giving us things to do on our journey. It seemed strange to drive back to the Kapiti Coast post Mega without stopping for any caches. Happy caching. TFTCSL

So many cars parked around here. What's going on? I found it first though Nice hide.
#2989. The last day of the mega event in Turangi. Someone told me there were some new caches published at Tokaanu. They were not on my GPS (I uploaded the local ones on Thursday) so had to bring up the website on my phone, which I find extremely fiddly. Just managed to get the coordinates for this one sorted but decided not to go for any others in the area as running out of time now. Well I was surprised to see that this cache has gathered 26 favourites in just the first three days after publication (23-25 Oct). That must be some kind of record in NZ? Anyway I parked opposite what looked like a tiny gap in the hedge and with gay abandon headed on it. Looked like a reasonable track. What's all the fuss about? Then the wall hit me. What the &%$@*? This is getting tight. Very tight. Could barely squeeze my body through in places. The GZ might not be far away but every step is earnt. What a dark evil spot. Well got there finally and the cache is in a sort of logical spot, so easy to find once you are standing over it. Added my signature to the log of the jail breakers then headed out. Easier said than done. There is a real chance they will find bodies of ex-geocachers in this spot in the future. So glad to see the light of day again. I'll add a favourite as well. Thanks FMZ.
I'm down in Turangi for the Mega Event this long weekend. I didn't get many caching opportunities due to commitments at the event, but after the conclusion of the event I got out this afternoon to do some caching around Turangi. Parked nearby and spotted an entry point to get into the gaol and battled my way to GZ for a quick find of the cache, then retraced my steps back to where I started. Thanks for the fun hide - favourite point added!
