Long hike but found

17-Jul-24
With some family visiting from New Zealand, we decided to take a walk to the top of Mount Taylor and show them the views. We were accompanied by Hogwarts85, and it was the younger Hogwarts who made the find. It was a cold blustery day and we had a few drops of rain along the way. The views however at the top are spectacular and it is great to read the information boards to be able to point out all the different mountains in the distance. Thanks Tankengine Domsky

Visiting from Adelaide to see family for the festive season, and today its time to tackle more caches in the Mt Taylor area including the Adventure Lab, some puzzles solved in 2021 that I havent had a chance to get to and some challenging multis. Brilliant location for a cache, and only found thanks to the hint.Found this cache and signed the log. Many thanks for the placement and the ongoing maintenance!

Great spot, almost found straight away but needed the hint to go that bit further. TFTC

What an amazing place!
I approached it from the bottom of hill and didn’t notice there was a pathway about 30mts from where I started.
I went on a straight line well.. the heart rate got a good run, and after some rock hiking I arrived to GZ
Like many others, I first disregarded the hint. Silly me. Turned rocks, check crevices… until I re read the hint and thought “he doesn’t meant.. like up there… nah..”
I ended up what my mum would have told me not to do and found the cache!
Also the lucky finder of a path tag!!!

This hidden gem is amazing
Favourite for me

Went cross country to this one. Spent quite a while searching here including in the correct spot, but didnt go quite deep enough. Also had a particular hide style in mind, which had me searching in the wrong places. All good in the end. Thanks

Amazing cache location! I went into this without the hint and was looking through all of the crevices and under all the rocks. I even stood right next to the cache but didn't look very well. Messaged the co and then set off up the mountain to collect the other caches. Co gave a further hint and came and got this on the way back to the car! Thanks for the cache Smile

Another weekend, another day out caching with Aquilus1. This was probably the first day however where we were mostly picking up caches for her and not me.... its what happens when I am 2000+ finds behind.

Mt Taylor it was, and I wore the long pants as it was foggy this morning... they werent a great help by the time it warmed up, in the sun.... oh well, I will likely switch back to the camo shorts for next weekend.... they also have other benefits beyond just being shorts!!

We started in the nest of trads underneath Mt Taylor before heading east picking up puzzles & multi's. After a sumptuous feast for lunch we finished on the longest cache for the day which seems missing but logging with permission.

Uggghm the hill sucked, but once climbed I made the find, logged while sitting before returning.

Found today on a walk up one of the goat tracks on Mt Taylor. Lovely big boulders here and nice spot to hide a cache.

Condition Report:. Great

Found this after XX cache on Taylor which frustrated me to a point of caching despair. This cache would have been easier had I entered the co-ords correctly in my GPS, but I didn’t so spent another good 1/2hr around a old fence post which had me reeling aimlessly again. Once I discovered my error I was on top of the cache signing the log. Tftc

E E E E EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE [Found!] at 1:56pm:Big Grin

The start of clearing Mount Taylor happened today. Using the advantage of a public holiday. We spent around 4 hours walking up and down the mountain. Until we had to stop.

This cache took WAY too long to find. Magnificent location but our legs were complaining on the way up and down. Very Steep. Found the cache after not taking the hint seriously, finding skulls and spiders. Gross. Finally found and signed.

Thanks for showing us this Tankengine!

Good pondering rock even with the smoke. Found the lid of the same sort of cache container TE often uses about 20m south so was worried it had been raided. But cache intact, log signed.

A fun day climbing up and down and around Mt. Taylor with Joolay, MinnieK, GLISS!, Fitzy_1965, and Tank engine (who came along for the walk, to check his caches).
TFTC - I had already found this one quite some time ago.
Tor blimey! This was as good as I had remembered - nice spot here... I actually enjoyed climbing up the track... even though i was also getting rather tired, i found some energy somewhere and dashed (well - staggered a bit faster than the others) up here to enjoy the view from such a wonderful perch to enjoy it from Smile
I am not sure if I found this before I became a premium member, so I may not have been able to add a FP ... once I post this note, I will check if I did, and add one if I haven't done that already Smile

22-Sep-19
Today was the day to tackle Mt Taylor. I had done a few on the other side but now for the main lot. In the company of MinnieK, GLISS, Fitzy_1965 (who already has most of them), Aykayam and Tankengine (who joined for the walk and to check on his caches) we set out up the hill. The sun was shining, there was a lovely breeze and great company.

So an awesome start but then there was this one. OMG I was practically crying by the time I got up here. I thought 120m up is not too bad but it was bad. My legs were like jelly by the end and I could have kissed the cache to finally reach it.

Thanks Aykayam for being so fit and energetic and getting there ahead of us and signing for us as I am not sure any part of my body was able to hold a pen. But all was good because it was then down hill. Once again fabulous views and I can see why you drag us up there TE. And once again thanks for getting us out and about.

22-Sep-19
Out and about today with Joolay, GLISS! and AyKayEm to tackle Mt Taylor.....accompanied by fitzy_1965 & Tankengine.

After trekking to the top of Mt Taylor, down and back up again then down..... OMG this hill is steep! 150m up didn't seem so bad and neither did the D/T rating until we headed UP! Surely it must be more than 2.5?? LOL

18,739. Found this one during a climb up and around Mount Taylor today with minniek, GLISS!, Joolay, Tankengine and Aykayem.

Joolay put the call out - let's climb Mount Taylor - and stupidly (lol) we said Sure ! This was about my 8th (?) trip up the mountain for caching even though there was only one GC cache on offer for me. The company made it all worth while. After finishing up top down we went for some skirt caches. This one hurt. It was about this time that the knee gave out as did my sense of humour - sort of Smile It was a long (not really) drag up to GZ. Luckily the energizer bunny ran up ahead and made the find - Yay !

Thanks Tankengine !! Nice to have you along for the walk.

22-Sep-19
Found with Joolay, minniek, Aykayem, fitzy_1965 & tankengine. From the path, this appeared so doable....but wow - after the earlier treks up and down this mtn, this one really hurt. I stopped to enjoy the view many times. TFTC

18-Aug-19
A fun (though somewhat exhausting) day up and down and up again around Mt Taylor was coming to an end. Time to head back to my car and call it a day. Or.....maybe just one more trip up the hill and one little more cache perhaps...? Sure, why not?
I went cross-country straight up and at the point my legs were finding it hard to keep going, I saw some lovely gigantic tors and was excited on approach. However when I hit the base the app told me I still had quite a distance to travel. So around I went and continued to go up and up and up. Finally I made to the real GZ but there was no cache in sight. I did some more climbing, and searching, and back down again, and up, and around, but no luck. I figured I was just too exhausted that my eyes had lost their ability to focus well enough to spot a cache.
Feeling somewhat despondent after an exhausting 3rd climb up the mountain in a few hours, I messaged the CO to say my day of caching had sadly ended with a DNF. After the CO told me where it should have been located, I pointed out it would have been directly under my butt if that was the case, so I decided to sit and wait while Tankengine came to the rescue with a replacement cache!
Ultimately I finished with a smiley and a satisfying end to a fun day of caching around Mt Taylor. Thanks TE (and the other COs) for a great day out of exploring and unusually warm winter weather.

18-Aug-19
I was happily sitting at home, when I received a text which implied that this cache could be missing! Well, I had nothing urgent to do right now, and this was close to home, so I decided to head straight on up, and rectify the situation! - Cache replaced, thanks for the heads-up BoujeeBunny!

14-Apr-19
This is a magical spot! The nearby track going up Mt Taylor certainly opens up the lungs!

11-Feb-19
I followed the trail down from Mt Taylor until it got to a bend with some stairs, and I was at the closest point to this cache. So I diverted off the track and bush-bashed the rest of the way! It wasn't an easy walk, down the side of the hill, and a couple of rocky, steep sections that I had to walk around and not fall down! But I eventually got close to GZ and was actually quite glad that I came from the top because I could walk straight out to the cache! Would of been tougher if I had to climb up from the bottom, so I am glad I read the hint first!

Thanks Tankengine, a really good spot for the hide that seems to be surviving well despite it being in the open!

It has kinda been one of my goals to collect all the caches on mount Taylor. I've kinda been a bit slow at it as well. Oh well, two more down today.
But I'm not unhappy about it. Its a great place to walk and enjoy the views of so much of southern Canberra..
ANd what a view here. Could almost get vertigo at this spot.
An unexpected hiding spot too.
Thanks TS

Out with Youban and AddictedGamer on a morning cache run. Other than the climb up, the view was nice and it was a nice place to catch your breathe again. Tftc!!!

This was a truly hard slog straight up from dty73’s car. AddG also found the going hard as his cold was still hanging about. The fence post was a good marker but not as good as the views. Kutgw

15-Nov-17
Must say this is a top little spot! Following the path straight up was not a long walk but in the midday sun I did feel the heat and perhaps felt harder than it could have. Stopping a few times in the shade gave the the chance to look over the views but the ones from the top of the rock which luckily was also shady enough are best. Approached from above and was pleased to see how accessible this cache would be to reach for me and found and reached easily. Also found one of the baton charms on the rock so have placed back into the cache. Top little spot here and with a refreshing breeze spent a bit of time. Certainly nice not to drive all that way out to namadgi but definitely worth the drive still if you can spare the time! Thanks for the cache TE.

Tor blimey! - nice view Smile
25/6

Hmmm ... not sure why this (the bit above Smile has been sitting as a draft log for 6 months (is now Christmas Eve - oops - I am having a major logging catch up today, and over the next week or 3 ... I have a few weeks of draft logs from the last few weeks, and a couple other odd bunches of finds which I kept records of in my note book but missed logging online at the time ... am on holidays at my parents place and this is one of the things on my "to do" list while I am here, that, and finding a heap of caches up here - lol ... and they were worried I would get bored?!)
Anyway ... I came and grabbed this late one afternoon ... probably on my way back from visiting friends down further South, who used to live not far from this cache ... I also used to live not far from here (back in the 1990's) and I used to walk up this side of the hill fairly often, so this was a nice nostalgia trip ... and yes - of course I ended up continuing to the top of the hill, taking selfies at the trig in the almost dark, and walking back down the track in the dark ...
TFTC - I had a nice evening up here ... quite relaxing (which I needed Smile

Pretty testing walk up here with a 17kg boy on my shoulders......but we made it and had great fun scrambling "up" to get the cache. Thanks again Tankengine. There's always an added level of enjoyment with your caches!

Today I teamed up with Fox in Jox to assist him in finding 50+ different D/T combinations in a day. He had already found 10 before I joined in. Over the next 12 hours, he found another 42 unique D/T finds, of which I also found 21. (The others I had either already found or had not yet solved so skipped). While Fox in Jox headed for Grey Ghost, I grabbed this one. Despite the hint, it still took me a few minutes to reveal the cache. TFTC.

11-Mar-17
Having spent the morning finding 22 caches around Uriarra, we thought we'd just grab one more on the way home. For Chris, it was "Just a quick walk up the hill, won't be far!" for Saf's poor arthritic knees it was "We'll just climb Mt Everest before we head home". Wink

Chris made the found pretty quickly, signed the log, and was back down before Saf even made it to the top! A pretty cool spot, and a much quicker walk back down.

TFTC TE! Smile

I had set myself very stringent targets for this weekend and one of them was "go for a walk". Nothing out of the ordinary but certainly nothing I had been up to doing for most of 2016 so the fact it made the list was highly encouraging. So I picked something close to home and reasonably short just to be on the safe side. After a quick sojourn to the Power o Gadgets I was still feeling Ok so continued on. It was a tale and a half but I wont bore you with the details. Suffice to say it ended up with me sending a text to all 3 kids (coming to dinner) to see if they could lend me $100. I was really quite happy when all of them responded in the affirmative! Not only was I winning but they mustn't be too bad off either. Smile Nice.

Great cache, Tankengine. Loved the tors and the views on the walk. I was out on Mt Taylor by myself today, having walked up the (low) road to the closest point on the road with the GeoSchnauzers a few days ago, when I decided not to bring the dogs up here due to weeds. They need a haircut. Today I went back and signed the log for the excellent Gadget cache which I had found that day, then came up here. It was hard work in my current state of (un)fitness. However, I got here, enjoyed the tors both here and lower down, scrambled around, and found your cache and the fence. After a puff and blow, and taking in the views, I went on up to find the summit track, and found further bits of the fence. Perhaps it was put in to keep the sheep out of the tors? In my younger days in Queensland, we occasionally found dead sheep in countryside like this, where they fell in crevices and holes and couldn't get out ...

Thanks, Tankengine.

It had been some months since I'd last climbed Mt Taylor, and seeing this new (ish) cache I decided to take one of the steeper routes to the top, that would bring me past these 'tors'.

The cache was not too hard to find - harder to actually get to, in fact, since I was only wearing casual shoes without any grip on them. Fortunately I'd brought my cycling gloves, so I could reach the cache mostly on strength of my arms without any grazes. Smile

Afterwards, I climbed to the top of the hill, and then back via the sealed track; it's worth a mention that on the way down I saw (for the first time in Canberra) a majestic wedge-tail eagle pearched in the dead tree near "Taylor's Terrace". A real pity that I always forget my camera, and that it swooped away as I was fumbling with my tempremental old phone...

Anyhow, I'd a great walk. Thanks for the cache!

25-Jan-17
This one could have gone either way... I contemplated coming up at it from the fire trail, but felt the need to summit the mount. The views were misty today, but beautiful. The foot pad proved its worth and an easy find was had. The tors are magnificent - Kambah Pride indeed. TFTC Smile

Sunday 22 January 2017 - a hot dry breezeless Summer's afternoon for a bike ride, and a 2.5km bushwalk to find 2 from 3 caches over about 1 hour. Great views. Quick and easy find. Thx p2p. TFTC Tankengine.

Before the day became too hot I set out to do 5 caches around Mt Taylor. Quick walk up the hill for a quick find. TFTC.

18-Jan-17
This got the heart beating on this hot day of 36C, going up that steep path. The cache was soon located. TFTC Tankengine.

Steep hill, but the cache was quickly located. TFTC Tankengine.

11-Jan-17
My goodness, I was the second to find, 10 hours after Stormcatcher. I hadn't even realised that this was a new cache.
I followed the footpad down from the top of Mt Taylor which took me within 12m of the cache. The cache was readily located; the hint was most helpful.
I noticed two old fences on the footpad, presumably (and mundanely) leftovers from the pastoral era when Mt Taylor was largely cleared to facilitate growth of grass for hungry sheep.
Thank you Tankengine for this cache and for bringing me to this attractive pile of rocks.

After a pretty warm day this new cache was the perfect way to get out walking in the early hours. Pretty direct path to GZ which you don't often get in Namadgi, unfortunately the same laws of gravity still apply here and it got the heart rate up a bit.
Really do just love sitting on granite in the moonlight, shame about all the mosquitoes. Love we have so many of these urban hideaways right in the heart of Canberra.

Cache found much easier than one yesterday, log signed for a *FTF* just before 0100
Anyway better head home, TFTC Tankengine
