Saw this one as we were driving west for a snowmobile ride up to the top of the Continental Divide. The ride was nice but we could only see about 15 ft. when we got there. Glad I saw this cache on the way. I have no information about it other than it is located in Emery, Colorado. It is also listed in the Georgetown, Idaho Springs Picture Map. But there was no information in that either.

Falkenburg Road - Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada

This little schoolhouse is located on Falkenburg Road in Bracebridge. I don’t know a whole lot about it except that a neighbour of mine who grew up on my property went there as a child some 60 odd years ago and he says it was around long before his day. The schoolhouse is now a private residence, so I didn’t get too close. My GPS coordinates are for the end of the driveway. The first shot is taken as you head east along Falkenburg Road approaching the house and the second is from the front. It is in very good shape as you can see from my pictures…I’d love to see inside.

Union Academy One Room Schoolhouse

This building (circa 1916), probably built as World War I barracks, was a portable classroom at the all white Tarpon Springs Elementary School for about 20 years. In 1942 school officials moved the building to the Union Academy campus, the established elementary school for ‘colored’ students in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The flexible building served as a classroom, cafeteria and home economics room for more than 20 years. Leaders in the black community purchased this building in 1964 and moved it down the street to become home to the Better Boys Club for 15 years. African American boys and teenagers gathered here when few organizations welcomed them. By the late 1970’s the deteriorated structure was an eyesore with few remembering its once important role in the community. Community activists succeeded in saving this building from demolition in 2000. This restored one room schoolhouse can now be seen at Pinellas County’s Heritage Village in Largo, Florida.

I was chatting with my sister-in-law while we were sitting around Christmas day about the different locationless caches I still had to do. When I mentioned 1-room schoolhouse she immediately answered "I know where one is!" So off we went. She said when she was growing up that they used it as their 4-H meeting place. It now appears to be private property, and looking through the door window we could see that it has been emptied of desks (which my sil says were still there when she was there) and is now being used as storage. It is the old Lindsey Schoolhouse. I couldn't find any info about it on the internet, but in the 70s (as I mentioned) it was used for 4-H (the Greene County Lindsey 4-H club). It's still in fairly good condition to the naked eye, ignoring the need for a coat of paint. The outhouse is still present, though not in nearly as good a shape, and the water pump is still there. SIL says it was still functional in the 70s - we didn't try it.

Situated on a slope overlooking Rock and Squaw creeks in the Missouri River bluffs, the one-story brick school is a remnant of the defunct village of Rock Bluff. Established by Joseph Diven Patterson and built in 1870 as the Naomi Institute, the building was originally a two-story structure. The Naomi Institute was known as one of the leading educational institutions in the state and the first institution in the county to offer secondary-level education. The school served as the Naomi Institute for only two years, and in the fall of 1872, the building became known as the Rock Bluff School.
The town, which no longer exists, was sometimes known as Rock Bluffs, as on the monument in the photo. For more information, see http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/ne/rockbluff(occasionallyrockbluffs).html

Mc Auley School
District 27
Rosevelt Rd. 14 mi west of Fabyan Pkway
West Chicago Illinois
Built 1820

There have been 5 locationless on my to-do list for over a year. I never seem to get near them when it is condusive to take a picture, so excuse the darkness.

I know there is information about this in the local museum since I did a report on it as a child, however i could not find anything on the internet. It was built in 1820 and has served as an active school since that time up until not all that long ago. At the time it was built, West Chicago was named Turner Junction. It has been a school as well as, in it's most recent incarnation, a day care center. The signs are down however it still looks like it may be in some sort of use

Found this charming little schoohouse near Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada.

The Browntown School, located on US 17, near Scott's Hill, North Carolina

We've always been curious about this building, and this cache gave us the perfect excuse to stop and investigate. Most of the doors and windows were blocked or gated, but we did manage to get a peek inside(through a crack in the plywood). Unfortunately, this building is really dilapidated, both inside and out. This fact is even sadder considering what we discovered when we started researching this school on the internet...

The Browntown School is one of the smaller Rosenwald schools, built in the early 1900's when Julius Rosenwald (then the CEO of Sears, Roebuck) joined forces with Booker T. Washington to improve the educational opportunities for African Americans in the rural south. In 2002, these schools (as a group) were included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's "11 Most Endangered Historic Places".

Further research showed that the Browntown School building was used as a pottery studio within the last decade, but it is currently vacant and appears to have been that way for quite some time. The future for this particular school does not look promising, as the land upon which it sits is along a well-traveled road and happens to have a big FOR SALE sign posted prominently right in front.

This One Room School House was built in 1884 located in Grapetown Texas. It was used till 1949!
The address is 7325 Old San Antonio Road. The door was open so we went in. The original floors are still there as well as a wood burning stove right in the middle of the room. It has the original well out back and an outhouse too.

Hi

01-Dec-05
I drive by this old school house everyday. It is the Missouri Heights School in Carbondale, Colorado. Located at 498 Cty Rd. 102, 0.5 mi. E of jct. with Cty Rd. 100, Carbondale
This building is vacant but has been used to hold local events, pot lucks etc. The day I went was overcast and snowy therefore the GPS coords may be off. I will visit it on another day and confirm the coords. The second building was used as housing for the teacher. Inside the building they have pictures of the old classes. It was locked today, but if I am ever there when it is open I will take more pictures and post them for all to see.

This is Victor Point, A National Register-listed schoolhouse in rural Oregon.

"It's among the last one-room schoolhouses left on its site in the county.

Built in 1889, the former Victor Point Elementary School is "not in the greatest condition," says Craig Roessler, superintendent of the Silver Falls School District, which owns the structure.

Found this not to far from another cache I was hunting. According to the gps info this was Grove School. There is not much here anymore and it is a shame. It looked like some people started to save it by putting on a steel roof, but that is as far as it has gotten. If you look closely at the inside shot, you can see an old piano in the corner and the chalkboard at the front of the room. It is located just north of Perry, Ill on route 107.

This is a one room school house loacted in Clinton Twp MI.

Bobcaygeon ON Canada. This old chinked log schoolhouse was the first built for the Village of Bobycaygeon, back in the early 1800's. At that time the village was just a small logging settlement. Nowadays, the schoolhouse (complete with potbellied stove) finds it's home in the Kawartha Settlers Village - a delightful 'interactive' museum centre that strives to depict an accurate account of life in the early days of the settlement. The schoolhouse is part of the larger museum setting but, in itself, is also an active part of any special event/ family days. At those times it is used for childrens activities such as crafts, history lessons etc.

Coralville Iowa 1876 Schoolhouse. This looks a little larger than most but it is listed as a one-room school house. Originally, classes were held on the first floor, with the second floor being used as the gymnasium and auditorium.
It now houses the Johnson County Historical Society.

Iron Hill School, constructed in 1923 in a rural area of northern Delaware, was one of more than 80 schools for African-American children built between 1919 and 1928 as part of philanthropist Pierre Samuel du Pont's "Delaware experiment." Though small and modest, these school buildings incorporated the latest design concepts in Progressive era education.

the school was turned in to the iron hill museum. you can see the old windows have been painted over. the museum is still used to teach childern today during field trips from the local schools.

This is the old schoolhouse of Lübars, a village now part of Berlin, Germany.
It is situated on the village green close to the church; it was built in 1816. It's stables became the fire house of the village in 1905. Today I presume it is a kindergarten.
Lübars - first documented in 1247 (only ten years after Berlin itself!) - is practically the last village of Berlin that has preserved much of it's looks and substance until today.
BTW One of my grandfathers was a teacher in a one-room village school in Ostpreußen!
Thank you very much for this Cache!
Best regards from Berlin,
Wolfgang

This is a vary old one-room shcool house off Boulevard St.-Jacques in Neufchâtel, Quebec, Canada. Found on a business trip to Valcartier, because some colleagues remembered news reports of it catching fire some years ago. It was abandoned many years ago, and is obviously just about ready to collapse now.

"The Little Red School House" of Newport, NH

Located on the corner of Pollard's Mill Road and Route 10.

"The Little Red School House," known as District Number 7, was built in 1835 and was in use as a school until 1890.

"This little school is sitting on land on which it had been built in 1835 for the sum of $160.00, by a Mr. Gilmore, on land of Mr. Uriah Wilcox. Later the town would be asked to pay for the land by his heirs. After many meetings, the land was paid for the sum of $3.00."

Josiah Stevens Jr. was the first teacher (1835). The school's budget for 1835 was $80.25. That included $2.00 a week to pay August Davis for teaching summer school.

Discipline was not a problem as is shown by the district by-laws that are posted on a wall inside the building.

"Section I of that law reads, 'Any child in this district between the ages of 6 and 16, without a regular and lawful occupation, who shall, except in the case of ill health, be absent from school for more than one day during the space of any one month, unless excused by the school board, shall be fined not exceeding ten dollars for each offense.'"

Students often sat three to a seat on the wide planked seats that were joined to the desks, with the youngest members sitting in the front of the room. The "black board" is just that, wide pine boards painted "black" with the alphabet written at the top in cursive. Students here learned discipline, respect, manners and the basics.

In 1890, with the change in neighborhood children, the building was closed, and kept in some repair (1900) by an organization known as The Red School House Association, which met each summer where old school chums, teachers and interested people visited and picnicked.

By 1952 the school had been closed for more than 50 years. It was silent and falling into disrepair. The school was in danger of being moved away for apple storage, when the Reprisal Chapter, NSDAR, was given the opportunity to love, care for and restore this historic building.

With the encouragement of the State Regent of NH, Reprisal Chapter began work on restoring this 1835 historic school house. It opened to the public as a museum on July 4, 1952 and was placed on the Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Saved from oblivion and from being used for apple storage, today it sits proud and happy on its knoll.

This building is open in the summers on Wednesday afternoons (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) and is well worth a visit! The area's local DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) chapter, Reprisal Chapter, maintains the building and opens it to the public during the summer months.

El Toro Grammar School, Lake Forest, CA

The El Toro Grammar School was built in 1890 and housed grades 1 - 8. It was used until 1914. From 1915 - 1968 the school was used as a local church. In 1976 it was moved to its current location at Heritage Hill Historic Park in Lake Forest, CA and was restored to depict its use as a one room schoolhouse.

This is the Canal School, a one-room schoolhouse northwest of Arcata, CA. The Canal School District was formed in 1889 and merged into the Pacific Union District in 1960. This building was built some time after 1889, because the original one was destroyed somehow.

This is my first locationless cache. I love this particular one room school house. It is very dear to me because my husband and I were married here. The Quarcus Grove School House is located in Edwardsville Illinois. As you can tell by the name it is surrounded by beautiful old oak trees. The School is owned by a group of private citizens that are trying to preserve it. They have an auction every fall to raise funds to care for the property. They rent it out for a VERY reasonable rate. There is still plenty of playground equipment in the yard to have fun on. The school has been partially destroyed several times and re-built. Inside there are pictures showing the slight changes. Unfortunately the building is kept locked and you can only see those if an owner is present.

Don't know much about history - hey sounds like a song. Anway found this by following signs in this small town. Seems it is the big attraction for Erick, Oklahoma. Couldn't find date it was built but from the worn out wooden sign over the door, it was the North Elm School, Dist 63. Evidently there is some kind of business there, looks like a junkyard but another sign in town said it was a Gallery.

This building served as the Ola Elemnetary School on Snapping Shoals Road in the 1940's. In the early 1950's it was moved behind the Sharon Baptist Church on North Ola Road and used for Sunday School Classes intil it was moved to its present location at Heritage Park in 2003.

Cartersville was founded in 1866 by Judge W F Carter. It was once a community with a college, two mills, and a Post Office. It is also the sight of the last known person killed by an Indian attack, in Parker County, 1874.
Today the community of Cartersville is known as Carter, and is a ghost town. Numerous stones mark historic locations on the open propert. The is also a Arbor for "outside" learning and community meetings. The schoolhouse is one room and about to fall down now. If you go inside there is no electricity and a dirt floor. It would be nice if somebody fixed up these structures since this is a historical spot.

Blackwater School 1913 - 1949

Situated inland on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

This is a small 1 room school house that serviced a small West Coast gold mining town (Blackwater)during its "hay-days."

The residents approached the Education Board to appoint a teacher to the area, as there were a number of school age children in the town.

The residents offered a room, that had been created by them for use as a hall, to be used as the schoolhouse.

The hall was 24 feet x 20 feet.

9 pupils started at the school.

The school closed in 1949, when the roll dropped to 5 pupils, and the teacher was leaving the area to attend training college.

In 1956 the school was offered to the community as a hall again.

It has since been a restoration project by a local volunteer group, and is open to the public.

There is still a small community of houses - approx 8 - in the immediate area.

The weather in the area ranged from severe frosts and snow, to very hot. Not to mention the infamous West Coast Rain.

Oh how school has changed!! [:0]

When I found out about this cache, a few months back, I immediately thought to log this school, now the Tukwila Library. But I could find no documentation that indicated that it was, indeed, a ONE room schoolhouse. Monday, as I was researching something completely different I came across the obituary of a former Mayor of Tukwila, WA:

In the mid-1970s, Mr. Bauch was elected mayor of Tukwila. He established a sister-city program with Ikawa-Cho, Japan.
Tukwila, in southwest King County, is near Southcenter Mall, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and Interstates 5 and 405.
With such potential for growth, Mr. Bauch was embarrassed the city would use a one-room former schoolhouse as its city hall. Worse, many of the city's offices and services were housed in portable trailers behind the old elementary school.

This served as a school from 1920-1937. As stated above, it was then city hall until 1979. It is now Tukwila Library. TFTC, and the history lesson.

11.00am. This was the original one room Mangonui school in Northland, New Zealand. It was built in 1870 and from 1877 the Mangonui County Council held meetings in it after school hours. When a new school was built in 1884 the Council had exclusive use of the building until 1918. It is now a private house and boasts a few renovations from its schoolhouse days.
Cool M&P & B.

It's a historic site and now a museum that is only open during the summer months. Took several pictures which include the required one showing my GPS. Thanks for the cache.

This one room school house is located in Petrolia,Ontario CANADA
This building was built in the late 1870's and origionally
located on lot 12E,con 9, Enniskillen twp. It was moved in the early 1900's to lot 16 con. 9. In the late 1950's the trustees were faced with a dilemma faced by all rural schools falling enrollment. Hard economics facts had to be faced. Central schools were built and students were bussed to these new halls of education. By 1968 all one-roomed schools in the township were closed and an era had come to an end. in 1994 the township of Enniskillen, who had purchased the building for storage purposes, donated the structure to the Petrolia discovery, and in the fall of 1995 it was moved to the present location.

This one room school house is located at Crook Farm on Seward Avenue in Bradford, PA. It was orginally in use around 1840 and was listed in the National Regeistry of Historical Places in the late 1970's. Crook Farm currently has a bank which is a reconstruction, the original farm house, several barns and barn like structures, most of which are the originals, an oil pump from when they struck oil at the site, and a chicken coop which is still operating. While speaking with a woman this afternoon, she told us that the chickens there were bred special as they tried to get them as close as possible to the type of chickens that were at the farm originally back in the 1840's! It is a very special area and is open to the public. Tours are given for groups or invidividuals and a fair is held in the summer so stop if you're ever in the area.

Mt. Gilead School, Kearney, Missouri, operated for over 100 years until it closed its doors in 1946.
The original school was a log structure built in 1835. The present two-story schoolhouse, built in 1879, replaced the log structure.

Mt. Gilead School had two teachers until the 1920s. The younger children were taught upstairs, while older students made use of a classroom on the first floor. Historians believe that Mt. Gilead was the only school west of the Mississippi River to continuously hold classes during the Civil War. Accounts of life at the school suggest that teachers would dismiss classes to watch marching soldiers. Mt. Gilead functioned as an academy for several years after 1860, offering courses in Latin, Greek, and music. Classes continued until 1946 when Mt. Gilead was consolidated with the Kearney School District. Clay County acquired the historic site in the mid 1980s and restored the school in 1998.

Today, area school classes can spend a day at the school to learn how it was like to go to school in the 1800's.

Thanks,
Carlin

The Glawe School was built in Ocqueoc Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan around 1885. The log structure was build on land donated by Christian Glawe. It was originally located on Ocqueoc Highway south of the present Lutheran Church. Seventeen students attended the first year, with teacher Emma Platts being paid $20 a month, with room and board provided by families of the students. The highest population at the school was 45 students. Classes were taught for grades 1 to 8. In an effort to preserve the school, former students formed the Glawe School Committee and in 1999 the school became the property of the county and was moved to its present location in Lighthouse, seven miles north of Rogers City, Michigan.

Licking County, Granville, Ohio
The Old Academy Building
It was erected in 1833 by the Granville Congregational Church for its Female Academy and church meeting room. Later, the women outgrew it and it became the Granville Male Academy. In 1863 the Welsh Congregational Church purchased the structure and Welsh language serivces were held there for sixty years. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The other side is titled The Anti-Slavery Movement: In 1841 a dramatic trial was held in this building contesting whether a runaway slave could be extradited from Ohio and returned to the south. The judge ruled that Ohio's extradition law was unconstitutional.

This is the Green Valley Schoolhouse in WV. This school was the one my grandmother first attended back in the 1910's and early 1920's. It was built sometime before the turn of the last century and all of her family attended it between raising crops. It is located on Green Valley Rd outside of Peterstown, WV in Monroe County. It has been used as hay storage since long before I was born and is sadly in disrepair. I could not get a closer picture due to the hornets nest in the foreground. Thanks for placing this cache!

Being a school teacher, I naturally gravitated to this cache and it is my first locationless. This little schoolhouse used to serve the children of the little town of Wanstead and the surrounding farms and is located at 5544 Confederation Line near Wyoming, Ontario. The coordinates are N 42 57.254 W 082 02.602

I'm not sure of when it was built, as there is no information to be found, but it likely closed in 1967 when two newer schools were built in the village nearby. I currently teach at one of these schools.
