On my way to Kaimai Crash Site cache today, I called in on this cache to have another look for it. Last time couldn't find it so had another scout around with no luck. I had another container and log paper with me so with permission of CO left a replacement as per Hint. It's a nice spot for a break with nice views of the Waikato. Thompsons Track has special memories for me as my father, sisters and friends used to ride our motorbikes up to this area in the late 70's and 80's. Track back then was was in a lot better condition. Today I walk up. Tftc.

As below commented, looked around for a while but couldn't see anything obvious.

I spent quite a while searching lots of trees and didn't find it!

Nice easy find once I stopped looking in all the difficult places haha. Cool to see some 4wds enjoying the track, these fun places seem to be going extinct. We have decided to head further along the north south track and head out Wharawhara tomorrow. Iv been wanting to get out here for ages. The walk has been more difficult than I had thought, I now have a bit more respect for the Kiamias ns track. Now to try out my camping hammock for the first time. Hopefully I remember how the knots go

Log a bit damp. Awesome views though

After the trek up and then down to the NAC crash site and down the rope to the wing and undercarriage we came back via Thompsons Track. I'm not sure why as it really is a mess (we came up via a Hunters Track). However at least this cache was on the way -sort of. A bit damp but writeable. Thanks for an incentive to come this way 11hpg11.

A 15 plus K round trip today from Thompson track up the hunters track too North South trackthe weather was near perfect we stopped close by the cache for a lunch break.
A small deviation from the trek...then after a short search the correct tree was found...there was dome water ingresition ..the log was damp but I managed to get the ink too stick to the paper...
Thanks 11hpg11 for the placement ..great area even though a lot of it has been decimated by the 4 × 4 drivers

Todays adventure was to make it up to the Kaimai Crash Site with a great crew (11hpg11, The MexicanKiwi, evilno9 and kiwileon). 11hpg11 and chauffeur provided a fun and easy way up the hill till GZ. Once there one more short climb to collect the goods. Great views... TFTC and the ride!!

Yay! Easy find on a windy day up here. Very muddy hike up Thompsons track but fun. Shame there is so much litter here. Easy find amongst the rubbish. Tftc

Found with georunnermat and other family members - having just returned from the DC3 crash site, we stopped to grab this cache on the way back down. While some of our group grumbled about the extra steps (9+ hour round trip), the stunning view right on sunset (see georunnermat's post) made it well worthwhile. Suffice to say it was pretty dark by the time we made it back down Thompsons Track to the car. Thanks for the great cache location.

Found this one on the way down after finding the remains of the DC 3 plane crash, and the cache at the crash site. A quick find, and a fantastic view over the Waikato from the cache.

These few have been sitting out here for quite a while now and as I'd been very lazy I thought that they would make a good relaxing morning mission.
Arriving here before 8am (I know, a late start to the caching day) and had the place all to myself.
Parking the car and getting ready this track is always a bit of an unknown with possible thigh deep mud wallows and the general trudge upwards to the crossing point.

Return Distance = 13.86km Total time = 2hrs27min.
Track Report: Unbelievably dry with only small areas of mud (generally at the stream crossings). In fact I never got more than the soles of the tramping boots dirty and had to wonder why I was so worried about the walk up here. Possibly because previous experience says that the chance of not ending up covered in mud on this track is very very slim in dead.

So all in all it was a great walk in, a little sign of deer on the mill pads, but other than that I had the entire place to myself.
Even managed to make it back home by 1pm (after getting a couple of other caches) to keep Mrs Dragon all happy.
Cache and Log all dry and tucked away.

Thanks for the "nearly" Christmas cache.

When I saw that this cache was published I had a few interesting words for the CO, as I know how unpleasant this track could be, however never one to turn down a challenge I knew it wouldn't be to long before I was heading up into the mud to locate this find.

Was meant to be a early start this morning, but managed to stretch the return time out a bit so was allowed another hour or so in bed, so headed out the door at 5.30am. Hadn't really looked where the GPS was taking me so just let it do it's thing, and was about 45mins into the trip to the start of the track when I realized that it was taking me to the far side of the Kaimais. So took the long way to the start of the track, and started walking about 6.45am.

Made fairly good progress up and bar a few places, namely the photos in KGD's log the track wasn't to bad at all, and managed to get to GZ in just under 1 1/2 hours. Found the cache without trouble and took a few pics before returning the cache and heading back down the track. Slightly quicker on the return leg, with a total time of 2 hour 45mins.

This cache also completes a challenge I set myself a few years ago, which was to locate all caches within 50kms of home. However keeping it like that I think will prove to be just as challenging.

A bit of a muddy walk up the hill with NZFlossy. Wonderful day. Good company, nice weather and mud. What more could you want

Finally a beautiful day and wanting to do a good walk with a friend. I haven't done Thompsons track from the Waikato side so I was really keen to do the walk. It was certainly muddy but not as bad as I thought it might be and I think the. BOP side is worse. At least this side was accessible by the right vehicles - when we reached the top we saw four 4wheel drive vehicles. It was bitterly cold but it didn't take long to find the cache and get on our way back down. We were even offered a beer and ride down but I think it was safer to walk. TFTC

3167 {FTF} When this one was published my immediate thought was "oh no means walking up Thompsons track". But with a FTF still available I set off today. I have been up or down this mud hole a number of times so knew what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised as I did not consider that the mud was as bad as I have seen in the past. There have been times when I have been up to my knees in it. Don't get me wrong this was still a challenge and there were times I had to stand still to consider my options. After 2hrs of picking my way I arrived at GZ. The view wasn't great due to the weather. But the sight of an empty log made up for it. Actually took me a little time to find. Had the right tree but it was not quite where I expected. A bite to eat and then it was back down again following my footprints (where the line was good mud wise). Back at the car it was a quick change of clothes before getting in. I was happy to have got back without getting too much mud above my boots. Thanks for the adventure and reminding me about this track. I did enjoy it and I am sure I will be back some time in the future.
