Its not going to happen for me today despite getting up early ahead of the low tide. Still a Significant channel of water that looks deep and wont be helped out by another 0.1m drop for low tide. Another day I guess
I was in the Port Stephens area whilst my son was attending work experience. As suggested, I looked at when low tide was and walked from Fingal SLSC car park, There were a number of fisherman on the sand spit as the mullets, bass and some silver-ish coloured fish had their 6 week "run" in the area. The seagulls were loving it, as a were a couple of crows. The walk to the lighthouse was a bit soggy underfoot due to recent rain, but still pleasant. It is a shame there is a fence around the living quarters, but I still managed a couple of nice photos. Answers to questions have been sent to CO.TFTC!
With a beautiful clear day in the offing, I decided to do my long-planned drive up to Nelson Bay, with this the main target for today's caching. Parking at the surf club on Marine Drive, I walked over onto the beach where it took me a few moments to get my bearings (was I even on the right beach?) as everything looked a lot bigger in real life than it did on the maps. Luckily I'd arrived about an hour before low tide so I had plenty of time for the long walk along the beach, across the spit and across the island. Speaking of the spit, it was still a knee-deep wade even right at low tide so pay careful attention to the tide times. At the information boards I quickly gathered the answers I needed then continued on to the lighthouse to count windows and steps. Halfway through my window count, a nearby muggle started calling out numbers to his son, not sure what they were but it was enough to make me lose count and have to start again. Also while rounding the lighthouse I caught my first glimpse of the awesome view north, that alone made the walk worthwhile. My mug shot next to the lighthouse is attached to this log and my answers have been sent to the CO who gave them the thumbs up. Many thanks and an FP for a great virtual!
A very warm walk! I've wanted to come across to the lighthouse for 5+ years, as we come and stay each year in Fingal Bay. After a chat with a lifeguard this morning decided it's not as risky to cross as the tourist brochures would have us believe. We didn't feel unsafe crossing at all. Minor worry about snakes on the walk to the lighthouses but many others were going barefoot so at least we had shoes! Thanks for the cache. Next time I'd love to look for the lagoon.
What a great caching experience had a brilliant day out in this neck of the wood / beach. Answers were forwarded to CO by MM.
What can I say? Just. Love. This. Coastline.
Today's walk over the spit to the island was a highlight for the Tinalba Bay visit.
We walked up to the lighthouse, then down to the hidden lagoon
TFTC B&J, dropping off a **FAVE**!!

I have looked at this one a few times and kept putting it off. Looked at the tides yesterday and decided it was time to make my way out and retrieve this virtual. It was a very warm day but I did very much so enjoy the scenery and the dip to cool down on my way back. As long as it may have seemed at first I did enjoy the walk.
Gets a fav point from me for:- the walk, scenery, bringing me here, history everything I guess.
Thanks once again

Walked out at almost low tide then found my nemesis, a virtical sand hill to climb at start of island after a long sandy walk to get to this point. Half way up hill i almost gave up but i came this far a little further can only kill me but it didnt. Managed to find the answers now the long walk back. Atleast it was downhill till i got on the sand spit then it took me over an hour 2 walk back to car at surf lifesaving building where i almost collapsed. I not built for walking on sand. Answers sent to owner while sitting in takeaway shop waiting for my burger. Thanks for putting it out there.
#8357 It's a beautiful, warm day here and so iPlod65 and I decided to go for this virtual. The tides were favorable and the sand bar intact for a safe crossing, but the middle is starting to get washed out, so it may not last a lot longer.
We came via the hard sand-dune, the shortest path, but that is hard work, especially in the heat.
The climb on the island wasn't too bad. We made the suggested detour to the pretty little bay and have to say it was worth the trip.
Collected the required info with ease and enjoyed the trip back via Fingal bay cafe and much needed coffee.
Thanks for the virtual Billy&Jad

First virtual with Lil_Miss_Kimmi & joshhanley. Pretty small window for low tide today but a great location. TFTC
Thanks for a great adventure.
We were reaching against the tide as we crossed right on low tide.
A quick run to the light house taking photos as we went, got the answers we needed then headed back across the spit (the swim was nice after the run)
Highly recommend this cache!

This was "the cache" to get today, but no luck. We got to the top of the last dune, 1 hour before low tide, and looking down onto the spit, it seemed too rough to our wise? eyes. Appreciating it may be slighty washed away due to the high seas we have experienced lately, and the rollers that were crossing it, we decided against continuing. If only i was 30 years younger, caution to the wind, off we go. We will try again another time.
Found a few weeks ago and forgot to log...great day out with Hintonites...love all the orb spiders...just a great little wonder
Great walk. Really surprised how easy a walk it was, expected much rougher and sandy terrain. Enjoyed the history. Great views. Answers in a message. TFTC
Found on a holiday with friends. We're staying at a rental at Fingal Bay. With low tide coinciding with the completion of our lunch, we walked along the spit in very windy conditions. We were so glad we made the effort to continue to the lighthouse. There is something special about them.
Thanks so much for the virtual. It was really enjoyable learning about life on the island.

Found with Jomingara. Walking the spit and to the light house was such a thrill even with the windy, sand-blasting conditions. Thank you for the cache.
On an anniversary long weekend away, I was allowed an afternoon Hall Pass, while it was a King Low Tide.
So I parked nearby and took the bush track to the top of the sand dunes, then it was down the steep slope to the beach and out to the middle.
Today the spit was thigh deep even at low tide but the water was quiet for the trip.
Once on the island I made quick time running around between the Waypoints, as time was crucial, collecting the required information. I have included a photo of the first moment I saw the lighthouse itself.
Then it was back across the spit as the tide had turned, with about twenty people behind me still on the island!?!
The walk up the dunes was leg burning, but so worthy of the great adventure and perfect use of a Virtual, where a physical cache is unable to be placed.
A worthy Favourite Point.

Great adventure to take children on. Discovered with our cousins today while on holidays TFTC
What a great little adventure. Went in two goes as when I turned up 3 hrs before low tide it was impassable. Came back about an hour and a half before low tide and saw it was not going to be a dry crossing today. Made my way through about knee deep. Almost at the lighthouse when a massive downpour surprised me, but I was wet already. On way back it was at low tide and still knee deep.

What a glorious day to cross the famous Fingal Spit. We had a fantastic day exploring the the lighthouse, lagoon and wharf area. We even enjoyed watching 3 sea eagles hovering above us while out at the lagoon. Thanks to Billy&Jad for the cache in this perfect location
LeeLee has been wanting to head out here for the last 6 months after planning a short R&R trip up here from Melbourne for her birthday. We decided to only do a few 'great' caches each day and enjoy the journey. We were not disappointed with this one!
Over the past few days we have looked at the tide times and noticed yesterday it was quite low (sand showing) even prior to low tide. We finished a hike earlier than expected so headed here 2.5 hrs before low tide. We (and a couple of other groups) were able to cross no problems today as it was only ankle deep. What was good though was the Surf Life Saving guys were out in the zodiac cruising the area keeping an eye on everyone, just in case, which was great.
We loved the walk, loved the views, saw lots of big spiders in their webs and loved looking at the old house. It would have been beautiful in it's day.
We took the short detour to the extra way point which was well worth it. Crackers had a swim and LeeLee took photos of this hidden oasis.
Thanks Billy&Jad. A very easy Fav Point added.

What an adventure!
Brought the extended GeoFam on this 8km return journey from our rented house on the southern end of the bay.
I've done this trip once before, years ago when I was still a muggle. However I was keen to kill two birds with one stone by seeing the sights again and ticking off a rare virtual cache.
Waited until low tide and then crossed the spit. Found the answers at the first and second signboards, then completed our quest upon reaching the lighthouse.
On our return, we dumped our stuff after crossing the spit and jumped in the water for a much-needed cool down.
Thanks for making our adventure that bit more exciting and memorable!
Favourite point for sure!

Visiting Nelson Bay area from UK staying with great Aussie friends, Ian and Alex. Fantastic walk out to the Lighthouse and great cache, thanks,
Beautiful walk. Beautiful view! It was fun learning some things along the way for this cache
Over the the past few years, the Bromance (comprising CrookedPete, Seffnjarah, SwellerFungus and most recently JezNDez) have enjoyed road trips, bushwalking, overnight hikes, mountain climbing, kayaking and other adventures in search of some elusive caches. The first planned adventure for the brand new decade was a multi day hike in Kosciusko National Park bagging Australia's highest dozen peaks and all nearby caches.
Enroute to our adventure, Australia's bush fire crisis unfolded, and with the Kosciusko region on fire and closed, our plans gradually morphed to a caching road trip back to Queensland, collecting unusual, rare and interesting caches along the way.
Time to get cracking north today. However the virtual at Fingal Island beckoned. Seffnjarah had already found this one so the remainder of the crew set off from the Surf Club at a brisk walk. The conditions were good, so we proceeded past the warning signs and soon enough were at the island, where the clues were collected and the history of the island pondered.
Caching is all about location and this is a great place for a cache. I also enjoy a bit of history thrown in, and I certainly needed the exercise before the drive north. For all of this have a crooked favourite point.
Thanks Billy&Jad

We attempted this cache today for Christmas, by kayaking over from Fingal Bay. Once we got there we tied up our kayaks and headed up to the lighthouse, collecting the info on the way. We took some photos at the lighthouse and had a look around the nearby ruins.
Back at the beach, we had some lunch and then headed back over.
Thanks for this fantastic adventure - TFTC!!!

On Friday I departed Brisbane on my way south to spend Christmas with some relatives in Vincentia, NSW. I had allowed myself a few days of relaxed travel, which gave me plenty of time to do some caching along the way. Having camped in my car on the outskirts of Newcastle overnight, I was up at daybreak to continue the journey south.
During my pre-trip planning I had noted that the tides were favourable for a visit today, although further research on the NPWS website had a warning that the spit was impassable. The last log I had read in November seemed to give a later indication of the spit being passable so added this cache to my itinerary.
Giving myself plenty of time before low tide, I jogged up the beach from the life saving club to the spit. I need not have been concerned, with plenty of sand evident between me and the island. I continued my jog to the end of the spit and had a more leisurely walk to visit the various waypoints on the island and collect the required information. It was quite blustery out near the lighthouse, but i'm sure nothing like the worst of the conditions experienced by the lighthouse keepers in days gone past.
There were quite a number of other visitors to the island today as I made my way around. With my tasks completed, I walked back down to the beach and jogged back to the car to complete my exercise for the day. TFTC

After checking low tide times the night before I thought this would be a wonderful walk. It was!!! Even though it wasn’t a low low tide, the spit was well exposed. We set off from the Surf Club and clocked up 9km, checking every detour. We did the obligatory’Where the bloody hell are ya’ photo and video. I thought I’d see Lara Bingle but missed her today. Off the spit, the first sand hill could put people off but it was the hardest part. I had one bout of arachnid epilepsy with a golden orb hitting my face.... eeeek. The light house was wonderful and the keepers building is quite different to the sign boards with the chimneys dismantled. An awesome Virtual Cache and a fav point added. A great walk!!
Well this definately was an island adventure, commencing very early as we departed our sleeping quarters at 0700 to be stepping off at the life saving club at 0725, 10mins before low tide. The sand was alot softer than anticipated which made walking a tad more strenuous than usual. Made it past the spit, through the washed up seaweed and up the sandy hill on the island. Wheres that first board ... oh there it is. Noticed the poles guessed it straight away but had to confir with the board prior to taking any notes. On we go to the next board. Oops, spider web, another spider web, coast is clear for now. 200m to go, oops another web step left, now we’re in the clear. Gathered the required info from board no2 and stepped off for the photo. (completely missed the question about the windows) Had a quick good look around at the old cottage, trying to work out with geoson11 which room was what. There was even a small tent (maybe someone was living on the island for a time?) that had seen better days next to what we believed to be the outhouse for him and her. Bypassed the lagoon now we make the trek back. Made it back in the planned time of just over 2hours total with the geokiddies. Geoson9 has a habit of ‘falling in’ whenever we walk on the beach and he only got his shorts a tiny bit wet, so that was also good result. Saw lots of clear and brown jellyfish washed up as well as a few blue bottles that was on the northern side of the spit. Returned back to Nelson Bay for a well deserved brekky and some fish feeding at the marina. Took nothing but photos, left only footprints. Our lighthouse photo with our discoverable patch. TFTC
We've been to the lighthouse a few times over the years but today's visit was a significant one as there was this special virtual cache to do.
YGAT and I gathered the required information at the waypoints and the lighthouse and also took the side trip to the secluded lagoon, which was a pleasant surprise.
Thanks Billy&Jad for establishing a virtual cache in this stunning location.

TFTC,
In the Bay for 3 nights with Nana nel and undertook what is left of the NTSBPT trail yesterday. We had 3 DNF's and there are a lot already archived.
Today we completed the final after forming a partnership with Team MavEtJu who collected the information needed in 2016.
The tide was low enough for us to attempt this cache (45 minutes to dead low) and we decided to give it a go. I can remember how dangerous the Spit was considered to be and today there was 20cm's of water across it when we waded through.
We made our way to all 3 WP's and collected the information needed. This was the first time I have been here and it was great to share the experience with Nana nel.
Answers to the questions sent to the CO for both of us. Adding a favourite and visiting trackables.

In the area for a few days, after completing the series nearby, seeing it was low tide we would attempt the walk over to Fingal Island to do the Virtual Cache. Crossed the spit, washed our feet, started getting all the information required to answer the CO. As it was a last minute decision we were not quite prepared, we did have 1 bottle of water and 1 phone to take photos. Arrived at the Lighthouse and checked it out and the old living quarters, a quick walk back to the spit, the water was a little lower, very interesting Island, answers sent to CO and approval given, a big thanks to CO for bringing us here.

Thanks for this geocache.
Thanks for this geocache.
We were for 5 weeks in Australia for our vacation.
Starting point is Melbourne and then more to the north via Sydney to Brisbane. Ofcourse is this not the exact route, because we visited many places in these 5 weeks.
Sometimes we did a geocache and also this one.
We have seen many fantastic places on our route.
Billy&Jad, thanks for this geocache.

Found as part of a group heading out to Fingal island after the nearby event. Sometimes it takes a village to find a cache, the group today included 2pods, Mr Knexpert, Gazkersh, littlemissleft, littlemisslonglegs, kingfisher_au, lee737, Samuel737, Banj Ward, beary_unicorns and myself. Made it across the spit without any trouble (the Ranger walking back did give us another warning about the spit), found all of the necessary signs and admiring the view along the way. Great location for a virtual and highly recommend a visit here to anyone. Congratulations on receiving on a virtual reward. A favorite point from me.
Many thanks for a great virtual and a really great walk with new friends and family ..the places geocaching takes us and such a wonderful spot watched up to 20 Wales breaching out in the distance ..just a perfect day thanks and fav from me

We've tried to plan this cache many times over the past year, but the tides never seemed to line up.... With some luck todays low tide fell just after midday, and with the Anna Bay event concluding around 11 we were well placed to assemble a team. I had seriously underestimated the walk, neglecting the walk along the beach from the carpark, so the 3km walk promised to the kids quickly became more like 7km! They had a ball in any case, and barely noticed the distance as they threw sand and checked out the shark eggs on the beach.
The information was gathered as we went (thanks team!) and the lighthouse enjoyed. What a top spot - very much worthy of such a cache. TFTC Billy&Jad and congrats on receiving on your virtual reward.

After coming to the event at Anna Bay, the tides had timed perfectly to go and grab this one afterwards. We went in a big group and got the answers pretty easily. GZ was a fantastic location and I'll probably try to return soon. TFTC!!! #1623

A lovely morning’s walk to Fingal Island lighthouse and back. We went from Box Beach carpark and enjoyed the scramble over the rocks as well as the walk.
Having to come to Port Stephens for an engagement party (which turned out to be a surprise wedding), this virtual cache was prime on the target list. I had been to Fingal Bay a couple of times as a kid, but that was over twenty years ago.
Checking the tides, they were not at all favourable, so we decided to roll the dice and see what happened. After a lovely breakfast nearby, we wandered down the beach, hitting the spit right on high tide. Thankfully the banks are currently high, and the swell was very low. As such, we waded across with nothing worse than wet knees.
Once on the other side we made our way across the Island, stopping for plenty of photos. A pleasant walk, especially as due to the tides we had the Island to ourselves. We spent much time exploring the lighthouse area and taking photos.
We came back via the suggested swimming spot, but two boats moored nearby ruined the vibe. We ended up swimming back at the spit instead.
A most excellent adventure, with a thoroughly deserved favourite point. My aunt tells me that we came here as kids, but I have no memory of it.
Many thanks!
Cheers.

Today was the last day of our weekend trip to Shoal Bay, we could not leave before visiting g this amazing location.
Beginning at Box Beach we rock hopped then enjoyed a stroll on a deserted beach before crossing the spot. There was some very shallow water but we assessed it and decided we were safe to cross.
After gathering the required info from the signs and visiting the lighthouse we detoured to the hidden lagoon where were spent a while watching shoals if tiny fish darting back and forth.
Once back across the spit we headed into the water for a dip.
This is an amazing location and well worth a favourite point.

What an amazing spot for a cache. We parked at Box beach and walked from there with a Little Rock hopping and nice walk along the spit. There was a little water at the spit and tide was on the way out so we went over no problem. We walked to the lighthouse collecting required information on the way. On the way back we had a little dip in the sea to cool off. So refreshing. This was the best of my favourite all time places/caches. Answers sent by the Bebes. Tftc
We had planned a trip to One Mile Beach last November and again early December. Each time we didn't go due to terrible weather. This time we looked and nice weather was predicted so booked a site. MrT had planned a paddle in his Kayak to Shark Island and said he would walk to the Lighthouse for the trig (GCA). I mentioned this Virtual so he printed the sheet and downloaded the coords to his GPS. We talked to a guy at the caravan park who said you could walk across the spit at the moment as the sand had built up. He also said if they got a big storm, it could wash the sand away and then it would only be accessible at low tide. We parked at the surf club and headed to the beach. I took a few photos and MrT headed off up the beach and across the spit. He gathered the information and then after looking around the lighthouse, headed back to the car. About a 2 hour journey all up. Info sent to CO. TFTV
Today I was out with my bush walking club and our walk today was fingal island. We walked from the surf club across the big sand split. I then had a fun walk finding the answers before getting to the lighthouse. Thanks for the wonderful walk and tftc
We made our way out across just before high tide and then headed to the lagoon and spent a while there. After collecting the answers and some excellent photos, we we started to make our way back via the lagoon for another swim. The whole island is really beautiful and we had it all to ourselves as well. Thanks for bringing us here
Wow, what an adventure. Started my visit to the Bay with a trek up Mount Tomaree, it was from here that I could see that the spit was accessible even though low tide was a few hours away.
Parked the car at Box Beach car park and made my way across the beach and over the rocks, and eventually across the spit. I stupidly chose a 37 degrees day to have this adventure, so was glad to have brought a couple of bottles of water with me. The history lessons that the information boards provided was very interesting, as was the lighthouse and ruins.
A highlight for me was the huge number of very large golden orb weaver spiders, such a beautiful creature. Disappointing to see two of my most hated plants here, farmers friends and lantana.
Finished my visit with all the required answers, and made my way back across the spit before low tide. Quite a few people had made the trek out here this morning, and some where fishing from the rocks, others sunbaking on the spit.
As I was crossing the rocks back to Box Beach, I remembered another nearby cache I intended to find, looked at my phone at the perfect time to see I was 20 metres away from it, but that's another story.
Visited trackables, tftc, such a shame I can only give 1 Fave point.

It was good fun crossing the sand spit and discovering the small island. There are so much things to see.

Our favourite cache of our holiday! Planned our trip according to tide times - we had very good clearance ~1.5hrs before low tide. Accessed the spit via the bush track from the end of Ocean Beach Rd. Bit of a steep climb up the sand from the bush, but thankfully less so on the ocean side (but long!). Would be an interesting camel ride ;p After a leisurely walk across to the island, we meandered our way along the track to reach the lighthouse. Not another soul in sight! After collecting the information to claim the cache find, we descended to the rocky outcrops below the lighthouse to investigate the rock pools. Saw lots of black sea slugs in the large pool and some small fish as well On our walk back we even saw a legless lizard on the track. Thanks for bringing us to this magical place! Congratulations on your virtual reward cache. Worthy of a favourite point for sure! ^_^
What a wonderful day to take a very long walk to the lighthouse and sneak in a cache. Thanks for this virtual .
I had this island and lighthouse in my sights for a couple of weeks. I did my research and turned up on time. The spit was good to go. So ff MrGT and I went on our little Island adventure of sorts. We had a great time taking photos and checking everything out in the small amount of time we had before the tide caught us. We ended up late to dinner in Newy because of the adventure, but my care factor was ZERO - I got to go to the Island at last! I've been wanting to come here since childhood!
Was very happy to find myself a virtual cache whilst there.
Thanks for creating this cache.

This walk and geocache was the highlight of my stay in the Nelson Bay area.
We spent a few days here before heading north to the QOGM.
Its a long walk out to the island, and you'll spend quite some time if you explore the tracks too !
I thought Mt Tomaree couldn't be equaled, but this is pretty close !
Thanks for prompting us to visit and explore this wonderful place.

Somehow managed to miss this when it was published and given the FTF was gone I waited for a nice warm day and the right tide.
Today I took my six year old for the walk - we parked at the forest track entrance between Box and Fingal beaches, but walked back via Box Beach and the little park with the rope swing. Pretty close to 8km round trip and with a sand dune and beach walk in the middle. She earned her ice cream back in town!
I’ve walked out to the island before to swim on the spit, and to climb around on the rocks but for some reason never been to the lighthouse - until today. It’s a lovely walk, especially as a loop so you can enjoy different views along the way.
Gathered the info we needed along the way and will send through answers shortly. Enjoyed reading the boards - shell grit mining for a living hardly sounds like a booming cash earner - goes to show how tough things were.
Walked back along the beach to Box Beach over the rocks - watched some young blokes headed out with spearguns looking for a feed.
Stopped at the little park near the park entrance on the way back to the car - the rope swing is great. Until I forgot to pay attention and got kicked in the face at pace! Oops.
Thanks for a great couple of hours of daddy/daughter time. FP for you!

Such an amazing adventure!
Always wanted to come here, and actually attempted once in the past at high tide, but the ocean was just too rough.
This time, the timing was good with low tide coming in an hour, but we had to be quick. Headed up Mount Tomaree first, saw that the spit was revealed, and got to the bottom around 4:30PM. Rushed to the car, drove to Fingal Bay SLSC and walked as fast as possible along the beach - The calves really hurt by the end of the day.
Made it across the spit without too much trouble and found all of the necessary signs. Great clear path to the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse itself is really stunning, with the paint, style and stairs standing out. It was close to sunset, but we still got many great photos. Glad they didn't close off the stairs for OHS or something equally silly.
In the dark, went and checked out the lagoon on the way back, before marveling at the stars in the pitch darkness as we crossed back over the spit. Amazing cache, easily worthy of a favourite, a great adventure.
Mailed CO with answers. Finally a 2TF. Still chasing that first FTF.

While taking in some R&R today having walked 100kms for the Oxfam Trailwalker two days ago, another walk was on the cards today to help free up the legs a little, so this provided a perfect opportunity and in a beautiful fantastic location. I parked at Box Beach, and wandered along the beach for about 1.5kms, crossing over some rock formations, and of course, the spit. Even at 3 hours before low tide, the water was well receded providing nice access to Fingal Island. I grabbed the info and signboards 1 and 2 before making my way to the lighthouse...but boy the wind was blowing a gale. Glad we don't paper cache anymore as it would have been long gone. I wandered all around the lighthouse, and the old cottage ruins, and enjoyed the views out to see and along the coast before heading back to the car. This is a really fantastic location for a virtual and highly recommend a visit here to all geocaching locals and tourists. Really enjoyed the walk out here, the information, the history lesson, the views, and scenery. Wonderful. An easy favourite.
