#4354 Today is day 49 of my geocaching vacation in New Zealand and my last day on South Island. I'm driving to Marlborough, my last of the 16 regions in New Zealand, to find some geocaches before flying back to Auckland. Found it! I came here yesterday, but there was a service going on in the church. I did not feel like walking around when they were having the service. So, I only visited the WPs outside.I came back today after visiting Marlborough. I gathered all the answers inside the church. However, the plaque at WP2 had disappeared. I sent the picture of an item near WP2 to the CO instead. Also, the chair was moved to the right side of the church as well. Msc_20, thank you for the cache! -crystaloops from Taipei, Taiwan on November 18, 2024 @ 14:08:18[GC7B9QF] Piki mai (Nelson) was a D1.5/T1.5 Virtual Virtual Cache at the time of finding.*Gunax lbh sbe ernqvat zl ybt. We are on a trip in New Zealand. A wonderful country with a lot of (old )caches. There are too many caches so we limit ourselves to the (old) gems or where we happen to make a stop. My wife is always happy seeing aan cathedral and so am I msebn, thank you for this virtual cache, regards xizat-NL. Take care, this hobby can develop to an addiction.
Into Nelson bumming around for the day. Spied the Cathedral and this virtual. Tricky questions but think I got them all.
While visiting during a world cruise, I've been cherry-picking geocaches and this one caught my eye. It's a lovely cathedral (gargoyles even!), situated in lovely grounds, in a lovely city. Other guests on the ship, as well as myself were particularly impressed with the flower baskets which bedeck the streetscapes, and many comments were passed not only that it was a lovely city but also that the residents were welcoming and friendly. Well done! And many thanks to msebn for a cool cache. A favourite point from me.
Today we spent some time in Nelson and beside sight-seeing we went for some caches. After a small tour through the city center we went to the cathedral to answer the questions of this virtual cache. Quite interesting facts about this area! Thanks for v#the virtual cachem, we leave a fav point here.Happy hunting!TFTCschnuckel1[#24081]
**Log about this cache:**A very nice virtual, almost a multi. In the cathedral it self it was diffcult to find the chair awnser. We met some Dutchies outside **General log:**After years of planning and the canceling of trip due to the corona crisis, the time had finally come:***"more than 5 weeks in New Zealand".***And how beautiful it was!Visited both the north and south islands, many tourist attractions have a cache nearby so I could do some as well.Lots of virtuals and earth caches too and traditionals. But also done a few multi caches here and there also even a mystery and wherigo cache. The trip to New Zealand was great and we saw a lot of nice places. The country has so many different types of landscapes. And the nice thing was that it is winter in the Netherlands but summer in New Zealand Too bad it takes so long to fly and that the flight is so expensive otherwise i can go here next year again. Now you can enjoy it, logging the caches is also part of it. I will try to email the answers for the earthcaches and virtual caches to the relevant co`s as soon as possible. But first log all caches and upload the photos .Submitted via Garmin Live Geocaching

Walked around in Nelson today and also came to see the Church / Cathedral. Unfortunately not any cash on us so we could not go inside. I hope the CO will forgive me and takes enough with the answers fromOutside and the picture
Arrived to the annual Christmas tree contest and got to vote for my favorite #27! Interesting history at the cathedral. TFTC
While visiting Nelson decided to do this cache to learn more about the cathedral. Beautiful site!
Nice to walk around a beautiful area on a sunny Nelson day. I never would have gone inside the Cathedral otherwise, how stunning! I'll definitely be back. Thanks for the cache.

Found with NZDi. This virtual cache probably took longer than any other virtual cache that we have done, but than is not a complaint, just and observation. My son's Mother-in Law is tied up with the Cathedral committee and knowing our esoteric past-time has asked previously if there was a geocache here, as she has been asked by previous finders to point out details required. She wasn't present today, so we had to do this the proper way. Fortunately we scheduled enough time to do it properly and discovered a lot of interesting history about the Cathedral.
An interesting note on the cache name Piki mai which the CO translates as 'climber hither'. I am a member of the RNZAF and a few years ago we had a developmental challenge also called 'Piki Mai'. In our case this was translated to 'Step Up', not quite the same but close enough to see the synergy.
TFTC msebn +1 from me

Logging with permission from owner. Had some spare time in town today and I was close by so I thought why not. Busy around the grounds the morning with people passing through on there way to work. I enjoyed gathering all the info and spend some extra time I had inside for a good look around.
Cheers.

We've been caching for almost 5 years now. This is a big milestone, our cache number 5000!
We've recently migrated to Nelson, coming from The Netherlands and we wanted our cache 5000 to be related to Nelson. What better to pick than the Cathedral of Nelson, right in the middle of town. This virtual sums up some interesting details about the Cathedral and it's history, thanks for placing it and thanks for making our cache #5000 an enjoyable experience!
(answers sent to CO, pretty sure we nailed it

When we walked into Christ Church Cathedral, we could feel its incredible history embracing me. This stunning cathedral has been standing tall for ages, bearing witness to the city's remarkable journey. It's not just a pretty building, it tells a story of faith, strength, and the people who have shaped Nelson. Stepping inside, we were overwhelmed by the sense of awe and connection to the past. Being in the cathedral immersed us in Nelson's vibrant history, making us appreciate its profound impact on the city's identity. Day 6/11 exploring New Zealand.
An interesting place with historic significance. Thanks for all the information!Danke fr den Cache! Thanks for the cache!????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Day 9 on our holiday in New Zealand. We visited the spot of this Virtual Cache. We made the requested photo, and added it to the log. Of course we searched for the answer, and sent it to the CO.

Our first cache in nelson. Loved learning about the area and history of this beautiful church. Answers have been sent to co. Tftc. Eatmorchikin from Brisbane
We found the information previously but managed to loose the info. So once again headed in and dug up the info but enjoying the trip around the cathedral. Having collected required info we had a quick reply from Co and now FINALLY get to log this find. Thanks for the virtual.
After loosing the info several times for this we finally got the info and sent it away to be verified by the Cache owner - having received the very prompt reply from the cache owner we are now logging with his permission - enjoyed this one very mch - thanks for the virtual
Junior cacher and I came to take a look inside this impressive cathedral mainly because it was a very hot day and we wanted to get out of the sun. Inside, there was an awesome Christmas tree collection which had been decorated by various groups and this kept junior cacher entertained deciding which to vote for while I made my way around the interior waypoints of this interesting virtual. We did have a problem finding the information for WP5, I think the chair had been moved for the temporary Christmas tree display and after doing 3 laps of the church we did a little research and made an educated guess for this one which luckily was correct.
The outside way points were visited on our way back to the car, answers sent to CO and permission to log has been granted. Thanks for the virtual cache msebn, I learnt a lot!

This was a wonderful visit to the Cathedral. There were many decorated Christmas trees by many different groups - I thought I had taken 3-4 photos, but can’t find them on my camera . I enjoyed reading all the history -so much to learn. The grounds were so peaceful and cool -it was a hot day. Favourite given for the cache.

Today I had a logistical layover in Nelson. After the basic things were done and the sun came out again, I walked to the cathedral. It's not particularly pretty from the outside, but inside I was surprised by the beautiful windows and the wealth of historical information.
We stayed 2 days in this nice town. So we did this interesting virtual too.
At first we couldn't visit the church because of an event there. But this evening we went here again and could find the answers and sent to the owner
>Thank you for this cache and greetings from Berlin Germany

After a week of rain and floods, this was great to do while everything starts to dry out. it was a great walk with plenty of local history. I never knew the church was open to the public to visit so was keen to see the inside and it did not fail to impress, a very grand old building indeed.
Thanks for the virtual cache it was well enjoyed

I had a good morning walking around in the sunshine with the two youngins and educating myself on some local history. It's great to visit spots you just drive by all the time. TFTC
On a trip with Ruru_NZ to gather the tour caches needed or in my case not done yet. Should be able to knock them off on this trip.
What a wonderful asset to the city to have such a wonderful cathedral here.

Day 14 - Labour weekend extended road trip with Kiwicampnut - relocated to stay south of the ditch.
We wandered here while waiting to here whether Christchurch would be going into lockdown. Luckily no, or it least not yet.
Interesting that the inside has information about the different parts of the church for those who are unfamiliar with Christian churches and cathedrals. How times change.
Lighting with permission after quick response from CO.
Thanks for the cache msebn

Visiting Nelson for a few days and enjoying the sunshine. It was very interesting wandering around the grounds of the cathedral and then venturing inside. My GPs wasn't very happy inside the cathedral but I was able to locate the features with some careful study of the interior. Thank you msebn, this has been an interesting history lesson, and another deserved favourite is added. Logged with permission after a fast response from the CO.
We flew down from Auckland to Nelson for another session upon the PWGT caches and other caches that appeal. This is our last trip for the series and will complete it in the 4 days we have allowed ourselves. On this trip there is myself, rustynz, FMZ, Rebel98 and Bony-Bruce (FMZ’s mascot) starting in Nelson and heading north as far as Abel Tasman and then way south of Fox Glacier. 1500km of driving in our trusty rental.
Last cache for our 4 day adventure! After this virtual we're off to the airport! Can't wait until I get home, it's been an intense 4 days! So sick of wearing my boots for about 12 hours a day.
No problem with the virtual, not a fan of churches myself but at least I didn't have to be involved with a service. Interesting history though, all the same.... the hill used to be a fort, I would have more interest in that! I did a virtual cache in Central Park, New York there was a very old fort there. thanks for the virtual msebn, a shame we never had time for the multi we talked about. Hopefully in summer now, all going well.
I think rusty has sent the answers thru.

With a group of Westies (rustynz, rebel98, gorby, FMZ and boney bruce) on a caching adventure in the South Island
It has been a busy couple of days, but we find time for just one more (sadly Bullseye will need to wait!).
What a beautiful way to end this adventure. This is the first time I had visited the Cathedral, it is 4.30pm, and we almost have the place to ourselves. Amazingly it has stopped raining, and the sun shines in with a golden glow.
With answers collected, it is time to admire the stain glass windows, but also all the bits of history within and the outside.
Answers have been sent to the CO.
Thanks msebn for creating this Virtual hide and for bringing us here. Congratulations to on being awarded this type of hide.
A special way to finish the day.

Answers logged and acknowledged. Loved completing this, learning some history of Nelson that I hadn't known before. Izzy the dog loved the walk around the grounds. A music group was just starting practice? inside the cathedral, it was a lovely sound. Most enjoyed cache.
Logging with permission. Had an enjoyable walk around the site collecting the required information. I was lucky to have the cathedral to myself and the organist was practicing so it felt my own private concert. Thanks for the virtual. Fav from me.
#1466. Day 3 of a 9 day caching holiday in the Tasman region with GB Leader. We came back to the cafe we had the Event yesterday, and picked up some more caches before exploring Nelson. Later, it's time to head to Kaiteriteri and pick up some more caches along the way. But first, some exploration of parts of Nelson we'd never been to before. The Cathedral is reminiscent of ones we've been to in Germany, France and the UK, although somewhat younger! This is the first Multi Virtual we've done, and we enjoyed the challenge. Did all six of the waypoints, emailed the answers to the CO, and got the tick of approval.

While my muggle wife waited in the car, I went around and collected the information for this rather long virtual. Interesting place, but I was always self-conscience inside since I was not alone. TFTvC.
We have been here before, about 4 years ago but we never even went around the back to take a look inside!
Thankful that this virtual gave us the opportunity to do so. Such a beautiful cathedral!

Our very last cache on our short trip to Nelson and here we are back in level three in Auckland - very lucky to have had our holiday.
Logging after approval from the CO here. Took a bit of time to get the answers, one in particular proved tricky as the interior decorators of the Cathedral had inconveniently moved one of the items to a spot where we hoi polloi are not permitted to go.
It's a beautiful place to visit and very peaceful - towards the end of my visit the organist turned up and started practising, presumably for the next day and it was very nice.
Thanks for the interesting virtual, all good here and adding a fave point.

A great day for a stroll inside and outside the cathedral today. Inside there was a great display of Christmas trees that we had actually checked out and voted on the weekend prior. Not too many problems with the tasks here, although the coordinates inside were understandably a bit iffy. But I got all the required info with just two laps . A few people in here today, no doubt wondering why I wasn’t paying much attention to those trees.... FP for a worthy virtual, thanks msebn.
Day 8 of my 2020 NZE (New Zealand Experience).
(My apologies for the delayed logging but I'm in catch-up mode)
Seeing as I can't be in America right now, I'm touring around the South Island instead. During my time here I am aiming to find as many of the TMGT caches as I can (preferably all 41) and also as many Virtuals, Earthcaches and Letterbox Hybrids as possible, plus any Trads or others that will fill a hole in my D/T grid, my Jasmer grid, or else the last 3 remaining Hidden Dates on that grid.
Today was International Geocaching Day 2020, and I had just attended a Community Celebration Event here in Nelson for it. So afterwards I thought I'd try to look for a few selected caches before hitting the road for my drive over to Picton today.
I have only been here once before, some 32 years earlier so this was an opportunity to re-visit and learn about some aspects I didn't know about the location.
Thanks for setting up this Virtual cache.

The cathedral is currently closed but the three ‘outside’ questions are still able to be answered.
So if anyone wants, message or email me with the answers to questions 1-3.

We had a full day in Nelson. Besides strolling through the lively inner city and visiting Queen's Park we spent some time in and around the cathedral mainly to find the answers to the questions of this cache.
Many thanks to msebn for the most interesting history lesson and, naturally , for working out this real nice cache! A favourite star from us!

Our last day of caching in Nelson before heading over the hills to Renwick. After overnighting at WOW we are working our way north collecting mainly solved puzzles and virtuals.
We parked nearby and headed up Piki Mai to the Cathedral. We enjoyed our wander around this lovely building. Gathered the information required and our answers have been sent to the CO. Great place for a virtual cache, many thanks.

Spent the day in Nelson. A lot of people around this Sunday, and we saw several markets.
Took a tour around the central parts of the city and of course we visited the church. I liked the view of the tower from below, but the backside with the entrance wasn’t that impressing. The inside with the modern stained windows was really beautiful.
Thanks for the cache!
Interesting walk, worth a FP!

Leaving Sweden in the beginning of January, passing Singapore on the way to Australia. Then visiting NZ before flying back home via Dubai. A trip of almost three months. Fantastic scenery and nice people along the way.

I have a 3 month sabbatical mostly traveling around the planet. My goal is to find and log 1000 caches. New Zealand is my 4th station traveling from south Christchurch to north Auckland, my first visit here, its far away. This is my sabbatical-cache #671. Sent the answers a day ago and hope they are good.
Found during my travels through the South Island - what a beautiful church!! Hopefully the service tomorrow will be wonderful

I started my great and unique round trip over the South Island in Christchurch.
My first major stopover was at Lake Tapeko - here I hiked up to Observation Mountain.
I then planned two days in Mount Cook NP with some unforgettable hikes. My big goal was the Mueller Hut - on a super strenuous hike I reached it.
I continued my journey over the lonely Danseys Pass to Dunedin.
Afterwards I drove along the Southern Scienic Route via Invercargill to Manapouri for some days. On this route I visited many sights and enjoyed the beautiful nature again and again.
I already booked a tour to the Doubtful Sound in advance - another highlight on my tour.
Afterwards I drove on to Queensown and Wanaka. From there I continued over the Haast Pass to the lonely Jackson Bay with storm and heavy rain. Afterwards I drove along the west coast always in pouring rain.
The rain stopped the whole west coast, but I had good rainwear with me. Only high up in Nelson the sun shone again.
Soon I reached the east coast again in Picton and Blenheim and the sun was shining again.
After a few days I travelled back to Christchurch via the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
At the end of my round trip I spent a few more days in Christchurch and its surroundings.
I visited many geological sites and found many caches on my round trip. In Rangiora I visited an event.
I travelled 3418 km and take home a lot of positive experiences.
Thanks to many beautiful caches I was also shown unique locations, historical sites and geological features.
I am overwhelmed by the fantastic and ever changing nature on the South Island of New Zealand - I will definitely come back.
Many thanks to all owners

Greetings from Washington state. This is day 17 of our 5 week NZ road trip. Spending just 2 nights in Nelson and the first order of business today was getting a haircut. And then Geocaching! I always love a virtual and was happy to see this at a location I was gravitating to anyway. One of two caches I found while in town today. TFTC

With a bit of spare time on this uncomfortably humid warm day I opted for a leisurely walk around Piki Mai and to explore inside the much cooler cathedral. I think I spent about an hour doing this, which is the most time I've ever spent here although I do remember at some stage going inside the cathedral when I was a kid. This time around I have to admit it was much more interesting as I studied the various waypoints and other artefacts. The architecture here is beautiful, the workmanship is exquisite and the grounds etc are well maintained - A great asset for Nelson. Thanks msebn for creating this virtual cache ... have a favourite point for your collection.
During my tour of Nelson I also visited this virtual cache.

??????It's time for Xmas holidays!??????
At Munich airport I met Jon Snow and Ari and a couple of muggles. Here we started our common holiday tour.
First we went to Singapore by plane, where we stayed one night and strolled through this beautiful city. It was really amazing!
Then we went on to our real destination: New Zealand! ????
Within nearly four weeks we first explored the North Island, followed by the South Island in the second half of our journey. We could discover unique landscapes and great nature, we saw many animals (and no, I'm not talking about sand flies here??), we met nice people and found also some caches. ??
Thanks to all the owners for elaborating, hiding and maintaining their caches! Staying and caching in ???? and ???? was a great experience and real fun!
The answers are already submitted via the message centre. Sorry for logging so late, but it's not one of my favourite pastimes...

The answers are already submitted via the message centre. Sorry for logging so late, but it's not one of my favourite pastimes...
Greetings from "good old Europe"??, H.N.
?????? Vacation at the original locations of the LotR-films! ??????
Together with Jon Snow and H_Nelson and some friends-of-mine-muggles we went to New Zealand for almost four weeks, collecting many great impressions of both islands, their awesome landscapes, their clinging (and indeed very annoying!) muggles and bushes, their fascinating wildlife (especially the sandflies were very clinging, too??), their various locations of my favorite movies ?? (although the guided tours were very overpriced!) and last but not least their nice geocaches!
I fell especially in love with New Zealand's bushes because most of the caches are hidden deep inside. And the good thing is: there are definitely no muggles there??!!!
It was a very nice vacation with many great impressions and experiences!
Today we went by ferry to the South Island. After visiting Picton we drove to Nelson, where we first visited the cathedral. There was a very nice exhibition about Christmas trees!
Thanks a lot for this nice Virtual and the promt log permission. I learned a lot about the local history. Of course, I leave a favourite here !
TFTC and greetings from Bavaria, Ari

We took the virtual tour of the cathedral and enjoyed the wonderful decorations for the Christmas season. The volunteers were very helpful and happy to share their knowledge. Thanks for bringing us to this location. TFTC

#4792. 5 of 7 for today.
[Sincere apologies for the delayed logging. Life ... a global pandemic ... and life got in the way. Better late than never.]

So glad for this virtual bringing us to this church and encouraging us to explore the inside. The bell tower is ... well ... interesting. Answers sent.
**Generic Trip Log**
A wedding anniversary to celebrate - provides a convenient excuse for a longer than usual vacation. So 3 weeks and travel to Australia and New Zealand sounds like an excellent plan. General itinerary is as follows:
2 October: Depart from home with a layover in Houston, TX
4 October (long flight + time zones = lost day): Arrive in Sydney
4-7 October: Sydney
7-15 October: New Zealand South Island
16-21 October: New Zealand North Island
21-23 October: Sydney
23 October: Fly home through Vancouver, Canada
Saw a ton and had an absolutely wonderful time. Can't wait to make it back here!

All the 3Prettys were together today (a rarity) and Mr 3Prettys chose this Virtual as the one we'd tackle. We made good use of the map and solved the questions in our own order, enjoying finding some information we'd never noticed before. The GPS signal didn't seem to travel well through the stone walls, so spacenarwhale had a bit of a hunt to find some of the right plaques.
Thank you for this Virtual cache and congratulations for making it over the high bar to earn it.
(This log is placed in anticipation of our answers being accepted by the CO.)

Firstly congratulations on being awarded this special virtual msebn - it is so well deserved - the incredible cache pages, brilliant hides and the underlying humour. I know I'm in for a treat when going to look for one of your caches. I've been saving this cache incase it ever came in handy. Initially I thought it might be useful for one of the biannual challenges and more laterly for my own goals. Anyway I've finally decided it was well and truly time to sign it off. I started collecting the information a month ago when I was here doing the earthcache but couldn't find a plaque at the starting coordinates (derrr!) so only collected the info inside the cathedral that day. Back this afternoon to collect the ones outside. I've always enjoyed my visits here - so much history and beauty. It definitely worth another favourite. TFTC # 14,510
I knew this cache was here, but every time I come here for work I’m not free during the opening hours of the Cathedral! Today I struck it lucky, thanks to flight delays and snow down in Southland!! Thanks for Bri gong me here! What a fabulous place!!
Prompt reply from the owner after sending the answers - thank you!
This is the typical place (at least in my case) where you drive close-by a lot, never stop, and when you finally do you are surprised how beautiful it is.
Very nice area for a short walk around, interesting to go in, amazing from the outside as well.
That was another nice cache I enjoyed from you!

It was a rainy, coolish day, so we took the bus into town to do some shopping! After we had done some shopping, and the rain seemed to have let up, so we decided to head off to the hill for some sight seeing, and some caching! We really enjoyed being directed to all the waypoints and being asked questions about each waypoint! It was informative, and made us think about the different areas, instead of just standing around and Touristing! We have sent all our answers to the CO. Thanks for placing a virtual here!
On a road trip south, enjoying the day and pic up some caches. TFTC

For our NZ visit we created a "wishful-thinking-to-do-list" ... knowing we can not do them all but we can at least try. Old caches, earth, virtual and webcam are on the top of our list... but also some traditionals, multi etc...
Today on our way to Nelson... and raining .. so decided to stop for caches along the road instead of a longer walk...
Thx for showing us th8s place, answers are send via messenger.

Dancing Queen 25252 and myself are on a 4-weeks-geocaching-tour in New Zealand with additional 4 stopovers. Many thanks for the cache and best regards from two German geocachers. Answers were sent.
We completed this virtual cache whilst in Nelson a couple of days ago. Very interesting and great to have a reason to take in some more of the history that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. Thanks for creating this
We really enjoyed exploring this area and learning extra about the History while we were visiting Nelson. Thanks msebn.
Quite interesting details that come with the church and it's surroundings. Thanks for the virtual.

Meanwhile this is my third geocaching-trip to Middle-Earth . And I love it! [:X]
Still there are routes and places in this beautiful country that are on the 'discover-me' list and want to be visited and explored. .
Although Nelson was already part of the tour back in 2017, due to the bad weather [xx(] there was not much of caching [B)] then.
So today (#24) with splendid, sunny weather was dedicated to make up for that and to tour around the beautiful area of Nelson and Richmond - by foot and by car .
There were some cool challenge-caches to be collected ....
And on top, the goal was to manage finding 7 different cache-types in one single day - YESSSS!!! [^] [^]
So I was busy to pick up a lot of cute local treasures [^] - just like this multi-stage virtual reward - Wow!
Thanks to the owner [:X] for placing this cache and for guiding around the historic site!
Best regards from Germany!

At day 11 of our New Zeeland trip we drove along the north coast from Motueka to Picton. We started with some virtual caches but we couldn't reach the middle earth. The area was closed because of extreme high risk of fire. The small road from Havelock to Picton with all those awesome views was very impressive but also challenging for the driver. In Picton we had a nice walk through the city, saw some stingrays at the marina and had a wonderful dinner. Finally we had another DNF (multi). This seems to be our fate.
