After catching up with the man who wrote a book on these trenches yesterday, I thought it was only fitting to go check them out. I never knew any of this!!What an absolute treasure of military history hidden in plain sight. And I absolutely love the mock up trench theyve done here, and the self guided brochures. Being able to collect a cache was the cherry on top. Thanks! Great fun.
Here in Canberra for the Mega and we found your cache while exploring the area.We found a variety of hides with varying degrees of difficulty.Enjoyed caching in this area, cache and contents were in good condition. Many thanks to all CO's for your cache placement.
Geobash Easter Mega - Day #4 (Easter Sunday 31/3)Day four saw me having a chill out day. I decided on going finding quality hides instead of quantity. The day started with the event GCAMJ0W but given I arrived early, I did the nearby tree climb. I also joined the flag parade up Mt Ainslie. I found a couple of historic hides as well as some higher terrain caches. I really enjoyed a day of taking it slow and not rushing around everywhere. I also avenged some previously DNFed caches which one of them I now understand why it took me so attempts to find it. I also found a few labs and once I got back to the motel it was time to get ready for my big power trail day tomorrow. TB visit. If the cache wasnt signed as JohnoMawbs, it was signed as JM or as the tour group name. A big thanks to the CO for adding this cache to game for the Geocaching community to enjoy. TFTEs & TFTCs After the flag parade, I started heading towards somewhere for lunch. When I looked at the map, I discovered three caches that I have been wanting to find for quite some time. Two of which have been DNFed by me in the past and I wanted to rectify that. This was the third of three caches. Once again I headed straight for GZ and got about searching. Unlike past attempts, I was able to turn the into a . Looks like I'm the first one to find it this year. Thanks for the hide and now to get some lunch.
#4360 I had heard of these practice trenches but never realised where they were. On a circuit of the lake this afternoon it was a joy to come across this area.At the time I snapped photos of all the information boards and continued on my way with the phone battery way below half life and over half the ride to go. Damn Pokmon is a battery killer!Calculated my final coordinates during the evening. This afternoon on a trip out to the Outlet Centre with younger son we stopped off and I headed in to my hopeful GZ. The grass was long but my search was thorough and I eventually came up with the find. Thanks for bringing me here AngrlG27
Interesting historical information and artefacts reviewed to identify the relevant information, and coordinates calculated with too many challenges. At GZ, saw something glint in the corner of my eye after searching through the grass for a couple minutes.

Easy work to get to GZ but then the fun begins. Grass is very thick and log is too wet to sign
When we left Canberra a few years ago, we are not sure that we recall this area being highlighted or on show.
A couple of days ago we had the opportunity to ride around the wetlands and then leave our bikes close to the starting point of this historical journey, where we walked our through some very long grass and read the information boards.
After making the walk, we continued our journey on the bikes into the city for the errands that needed doing, and then raced home as a storm had come through and we got rather drenched.
We left the final of this multi for today, and this time we drove back and parked not too far away and had a peaceful walk to GZ.
The grass everywhere is so long at the moment, and GZ is no exception.
Log signed here. Thanks AngelG27 for highlighting this history.

Quite a tough find atm as the grass is very long! Log quite damp and delicate. Managed to etch my name on. Thanks for bringing me here AngelG27. And, as ever, thanks for the cache.
I just "attended" (via zoom) a Heritage Festival talk, about these trenches, and the speaker actually mentioned this Geocache (in a good way) and had a slide with a picture of the listing page
Nice to see a Geocache getting talked about as a good thing, by/to muggles ...

I had a day off today and after doing my container return and Lids4Kids drop off I came here to finally explore this part of the wetlands that I jad never been to.
This was a great cache to explore the trench site.
I do hope that my children will never have to experience war.
I had a good walk around, collected the other caches in the area and did some birdwatching.
GZ was a bit tricky because of the grass that has gone crazy, but I eventually found the cache.
The logsheet was very wet and I let it dry a little bit in the sun and wind.

Big day today! Was chatting with FejerFam about caching last night and he suggested that we could do Majura Cycleway. Great idea! I have been eyeing them off ever since I only did 8 previously. So started at 11am where I met up with FejerFam in Dickson. Then ride up the CCT Trail to get to Majura Cycleway and then we profit. The sky was quite cloudy and we did end up getting rained on quite a bit. Took shelter at 27 Majura Cycleway where we fuelled up too. Then kept going until we reached the end. Then took a ride down to a nice burger place where we ate up at 4pm. Then FejerFam had to go and gave me the option to come in the car with him which I declined. I have a lot more caches to do! Then spent another 3 hours going around Canberra picking up more caches as I go. Good day!
All logs signed as EE + FF except for the ones I found by myself
Thanks to all the COs for placing and thanks to FejerFam for accompanying me!

The PQ in my GPS must a couple of days old as Johnno's log wasn't there....good thing maybe.
Was out in the area near my old work and headed down to give this one a go. The grass is certainly long at GZ, however I thought the hint was excellent and concentrated my search on that and after stomping the grass down, the cache was spotted rather quickly. Log was signed, cache replaced and I was soon heading back to the car.
Thanks AngelG27....always enjoy a walk around here.

19/12/21: With my final chance to attend one last event (not including my CITO) before the end of the year, I decided on taking it. So after church today, I headed over to Canberra to attend it as well as find some caches around the around the area. The event was great fun and all the Geo-talk was great as well. Afterwards, I (and others) found a few nearby caches before we headed off. KFC for dinner tonight sounds great.
20/12/21: I wasn't prepared for today's caching adventures. Snakes, mud, damaged containers, dodgy coordinates (mainly due to tree cover), DNF's and issues with geo-apps, were all had today. My first cache I attempted was where I encountered the snakes, walking through knee high grass didn't help. No, I didn't find the cache, even though I was at GZ for 20 minutes waiting for it to be safe. Once it was, I moved on. I then found a couple of nearby caches before heading to lunch. After lunch I learnt about 'Palmerville Village' before leaving Canberra. After that, I found the next lot of caches in the Flags of the world series before heading home. A great couple of days out but now time to rest up for four massive days at work (leading into Christmas).
TB visit. I would like to thank all CO's of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring enjoyment to the caching community. TFTE and TFTC's!

What a good single offset multi. I had collected the information I needed for this cache a few weeks ago when completing an Adventure Lab. I made my first attempt to find the cache last week, but between the long grass and a bit of uncertainty, I came away empty handed. Luckily, I looked at this cache page yesterday and saw there had been maintenance. Knowing that it had to be there (and hoping/assuming the cache owner had left a fresh geotrail), I came out a third time. This time I was right in, and had the container in hand nearly straight away. Turns out, it’s a little higher than normal, which should help with moisture. Now I can cycle past here without being haunted by an y found geocache, thanks AngelG27!
A nice solve and a good find but The is wet and rips easily. Couldn’t log but can provide photo if needed TFTC
Quickly solved and found but cache log is super wet and cannot be written on, needs maintenance. TFTC
#12114 - 3:15:00 PM; Needed a multi and a regular to make some more small steps on a couple of personal challenges today. The weather was fine, so I headed over to the Jerrabomberra Wetlands for this cache. A pleasant stroll to the posted coords and it wasn't too long before I had a reasonable set of coords sorted. Off to GZ where the undergrowth presented a challenge, but managed to locate the cache eventually. The log was quite wet, but I did manage to add my name. Just! I should have checked the location of the nearest regular size cache before I headed off for GZ, as it would have saved some time and back tracking . TFTC AngelG27
Great puzzle and solved straight away, sadly the grass around the GZ was taller than I and I couldn’t get to it
Really enjoyed this multi I completed while doing the nearby AL. This probably exemplifies what I love about caching so much - I never knew this trench system existed and was so well presented.
Multi was completed without issue, however the log in the container at GZ was wet (despite the recent dry weather) and unable to be signed. I sent a pic of the log to the CO who has graciously allowed me to log as found.
Thanks, AngelG27 - this was most enjoyable!

Found on a loop of the east basin. Interesting spot. Log was fairly wet so need careful extraction.
After a morning geohike with AngelG27, Fox In Jox, TikvaNZ and ZQX, I decided to continue my mission and grab the labs and the other caches around the wetlands
I made the wander down to this one from the wetlands parking area. A nice quiet location with the occasional cyclist and dog walker meandering along the nearby path. I had a nice little wander gathering the info and learning about the trenches - tough times indeed! I even checked out the replica when grabbing the nearby lab. Never knew that was there!
Quick find of the cache on the way back.
Thanks for the neat multi, AngelG27 Fave for ya!

Having worked just across the river for several years, I had heard about the trench warfare training facilities, but wasn't aware that elements of it are still in evidence.
This was a neat multi - interesting and informative, and clearly set-up.

Second day of caching in Canberra this weekend. Weather looks a lot better then yesterday. With that said the bike came out if the car so I didn't drag it along the whole way for nothing. Lots of caches found again, thanks to all for hiding. Also made good progress towards a few goals.

We were a bit concerned because of the distance from the trenches but the coordinates agreed with the checksum..

We collected the info just after the Brambles cache, finding the signs interesting. Too bad they don't have trenches like the ones remaining in France/Belgium. This one was grabbed last (after dark). Something was a bit iffy as we poked around some really overgrown crud with no luck. A few cyclists rode by, we may have looked a bit suss. There was no luck & we were about to heads off when I decided to check a bit further up the feature. Found the cache in about 5 seconds... The log is damp though.
Tonight I was out an about doing the "East vs West" Adventure Lab under the cover of darkness. As I was approaching one of the waypoints for the AL, I noticed this multi beginning in the same vicinity. Would be rude to not have a crack right? So with the phone torch light as my only light source, I went about reading the information boards and gathering the required information. I then worked out the GZ nice and quickly and made a nice easy find of the cache. Always say caching at night is easier as the containers seem to stand out more lol.
Thanks for the Multi AngelG27

This was a really interesting cache to research. I would not have known about this facility but for geocaching! There was some minor agony collecting numbers but soon we had a GZ to head to. Thanks AngelG27 a favourite too!
I collected the info for this one a loooong time ago but was a bit nervous to venture into the GZ. I passed by mNy times and always recalled that it was in there somewhere but I never went in for a closer look. Today I decided to give it a look but I had lost my calculated coordinates. I went in anyways and quickly had the cache in hand. TFTH
Thank you for a fun multi, we really made a meal of this as tried to get all the answers of the first board, nothing seemed to work, then the penny dropped we felt very stupid but had a good laugh.
Practicing social distancing with GLISS! and nibletricecakes while on an outing collecting a few caches and getting some exercise. TFTC
#3700 Out and about with Nibletricecakes and k8tybee. Turns out that this will be the last N-G-K team find for a while - bloody Covid19. We had a lovely afternoon with beautiful warm weather, great chats and enjoyed exploring this pocket of Canberra. TFTC AngelG.
Our goal for this "Leap Day" was to get 10 different types which we managed with a few extras thrown in for good measure and even a border crossing.
Being close by after a bite to eat we called past these ones that had popped up since we were here last.
Collected the info for this one before heading to the other new ones for us out here.
Never knew this was actually here. Guess you do learn something new every day.
Thanks for the history lesson and hide AngelG27

I have lived in Canberra my whole life, and I did know these trenches were here.
What a lovely way to find out about history in the area. This is what draws me to geocaching, learning new things about different places.
Thank you

I headed out to the Jerrabombra Wetlands to get a few caches and to do the new adventure lab. I enjoyed my walk around kellys loop again, and was happy to get all the information required. Then it was off to the World War I trench school and a few caches at repeat locations in the cow paddocks on the banks of the molonglo River. A nice sunny morning walking. I have been around here several times, and all the information about the trenches has been put up since then. It is great to visit, and I was even happier when I found the cache at my calculated GZ.
Thanks.

First thing we did when we arrived at this location was to collect the data for this cache before collecting a couple of others caches further on. The history here is most fascinating and worth a read and a favourite point for the education. After collecting the other two caches we walked where the trenches would have been to get a feel for the distances at which the troops would have fired their guns towards enemy lines - scary.
We met Bobl27 and his gorgeous GeoHound at this location - always good to meet a fellow geocacher in the field. We then sat down to sort out the two potential answers for one question and, as hoped, the checksum soon sorted us out. This cache was the third and last found for this walk and a quick find at GZ. Only after logging this cache did we realise that we had also just met the CO - lol.
At GZ we saw IamCoust (and son) across the road on the bike path AND very soon after we crossed back over to see a large brown snake slithering across the bike path (at great speed) - YIKES!! This first walk of the day to pick up 3 caches in this location was 3km over 1.25hrs with a total ascent/descent of just 34m - yep, a gentle walk. TFTC AngelG27.
**Our day**
A late morning start with just two of us out and about taking on two gentle walks and a drive around Canberra's tourist sites. We were both taking it easy as it was too windy to do much else as the surrounding bush walks were out of bounds as many of our national parks have been closed due to fire risks. Most of the afternoon was consumed by the 'I love Canberra' Wherigo. It was fun trying to second guess what was a tourist attraction and what wasn't. Our hit rate was 2/3 which was interesting but not surprising as we all see and like different things as tourist attractions.

On this cool and cloudy evening I went out to try for a FTF. No such luck but I had great views of the setting sun behind parliament house with the cow paddock in front. What a sight. And I found two caches out here I didn't get to finiah last time I was out here (also for a FTF
I had started this one last time so when I came from the newest cache out and past here, even though it was getting chilly and dark and looked like rain, I just couldn't resist collecting the rest of the information. Well the I could resist doing the calculations and I am glad I did.
In the now dark I was able to find the Cache at GZ quickly due to the hint. Nice multi cache, all in good order.
Thank you AngelG27 for putting the cache out and maintaining it.

On day one of this task, I did not read the signs properly and did not understand one question. So I made two mistakes and did not find the final cache. But I had photographed the info signs and at home in front of the computer, I had the right answers. I went back today and straight to the location. It was an easy find but a near disaster as the wind whipped the log out of my hand. Fortunately it did not go find and after a climb over a fence and back over the gate, I had the log signed it and returned it to its hiding spot. TFTC
What an amazing piece of history. Just watched Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" over the weekend, which gave this a lot more context. TFTC.

Wanting to complete the new lab caches in Canberra, I headed to the area. Whilst completing them, I looked for some nearby caches. Always liking multi’s, this one was a must do! Thanks for placing the cache AngelG27.
Found on a last afternoon caching run before the car goes in for repair tomorrow. Was always hoping to see a mutli about this location, which I admired everytime I came here previously for caching. It was a lovely walk to WP1 and then a very interesting walk around the exhibit to read all the signs. The layout is very engaging and the end tunnel is also a great addition. At GZ it was a quick find. TFTC AngelG27!
Usually I am on bike and going back home from nearby beer place..and its dark. So not in the best shape for caching
Today I showed up around ad had some spare time. Walked around and checked the site. War is not my favorit topic, but history is. So managed to find the cache in the end

A quick lunchtime multi not far from work. I walked down and got the answers which matched the checksum and walked to GZ. There was mowing going on nearby and I had a quick search until the mower came too close and then wandered off to confirm GZ with the CO while the mower was nearby, After he turned his tail I made a quick find.
Thanks AngelG27. Always love a multi! sometimes six in a day!!!

Out and about with Alansee on the Mega weekend. It appeared that he had found this cache as it didn't show up on his GPSr. However as we discovered later he hadn't actually found it previously which is always a bit of a surprise. That discrepancy has now been put right.
Day 3 of my trip to the Clear Waters Mega. Dubbo to Queanbeyan, in a round-about way, covering more local government areas. A night-time multi to end the day. Stupid challenges forcing me to do these things... TFTC!
Day 10: Clear Waters Mega Trip
A morning headache put paid to my days plans and I spent a far amount of time sitting in the peace and quiet of my car. Did and earthcache or two and several beginnings of multis where I do could be gleaned from the comfort of my car or a extremely short walk. As the afternoon wore on the headache wore off. Met up with Ardom who arrived down and we picked up a couple of good park and grab’ish DT fillers before hitting up tonight’s event.
Thanks AngelG27 for being part of my Clear Waters adventure.

I cycled into town to attend the remembrance day ceremony, and on my return journey collected a few more caches around the east side of the lake.

Nice to see this bit of local history. I had a bit of trouble getting the coords to match the checksum, but a quick revision soon spotted the obvious error. Nice walk thanks.
Been a while since I have been here. It was good and interesting to see all the interpretive signs that have been erected. TFTC.
An interesting area to explore. After a bit of a history lesson, we had the required info. We were going to take the hound for a ramble and collect the cache on the way back but everywhere here is 'No Dogs'! So instead we just wandered back to the car, swinging past GZ on the way. We were looking for a small container so this had us fooled for a little while. Thanks AngelG27
A good start to our day, as we plan to cycle and cache our way around the lake. TFTC
I was doing caches in the area and noticed this straight forward multi and I thought I'd give it a shot, particularly as today is the day after ANZAC Day! The puzzle was easily completed with GZ a short walk away. Such an interesting part of history - I shared details of the location at lunch and there will be another visitor soon - whether he will caching is another question A favourite point from me for sharing a piece of wartime history.
Nice one, Angel. Never knew this existed. Knightech and I are on another bike ride for the benefit of our health and fitness. It's a lovely day, just a little warm, and we decided to attempt this cache on our way. Knightech went looking for the nearby traditional, which I have already found, while I went looking for answers and the interesting information available. It was most illuminating. I soon had answers, then off we went and soon had the find. Thanks, Angel.
I walked down to the trench trail and did the caches down here only about 2 months before this cache came out. Infact while I was doing those caches I started to plan a multi that involved the trench trails! But of course someone beat me not too long after, damm! I still could go ahead with my idea and put GZ in another location because there seems to be some open land around here, however today I did not have too much time.
Walked down the familiar road and got to the signs that I had seen on my previous visit. I made quick work of the questions and calculations before it was time to head down to GZ.
The cache is listed as a small but it is definitely a micro, not to worry though as it is in the obvious location and a quick find.
TFTC AngelG27! Good to visit for the second time

I had heard of these trenches, but reading about them here was a history lesson. The multi was easily solved and the cache found quickly. TFTC AngelG27.
I had to go to Fyshwick today so I was looking for a few caches to do on the way there or back, these ones on dairy flat road are perfect and fit my needs perfectly.
Its been a long time since I drove on this road, a very long time, maybe 20 years! The road itself is in OK shape but it has some strange things blocking traffic for some reason, I guess otherwise some might use this road for drag racing.
There certainly are a lot of brambles done here... they are everywhere and they look super juicy, I think I might come back o the weekend with the geokids as we love picking and then jam making.
I was having pen issues again... damn thing wouldn't write so I was left leaving an impression of my name and date with just a few bits of ink here and there!
Interesting place and cool little wooden trench that gives a great sensation of what the trenches would have been like
Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache.

A short detour to find a couple of caches in the area. I have been here a couple of times with my walking group, and it has been interesting to see the site progress. Took a little longer than expected at GZ, but found in the end. TFTC.
A really hot day, so had to be quick out in the sun reading the information panels.
It appeared to be a very well set up demonstration. I wonder if the planes really did drop bombs on the trenches for added effect. "
"Hold your hat fellas"
Made the detour and find nice and quickly.
Thanks for the find

A day focused on multi caches, with some others thrown in as I passed. This was the tenth of 10 multis found. I met up with ZQX to do this one and a couple of puzzles before calling it a day. Information easily collected, but I missed the cache at GZ as I was looking for a small rather than an XS. After re-checking calcs ZQX re-checked where I had looked and spotted the cache. Co-ords spot on. TFTC.

Found with TikvaNZ on a hot afternoon. Gathering the information did not take long, but finding the cache did. Funny how that works. Two experienced cachers with cache blindness!
Thx for the education and the cache!

I recall Mark Butz contacting me years ago to see what I kew about this training system. Great to see the results of his research and ground truthing. A beautiful and informative multi cache - TFTC and a fav point from me : ) Would love to post pictures but that would give the game away
What better way to honour Remembrance Day, than to visit a reminder of the challenges those soldiers of the Great War faced. Having passed through RMC as a young lad, it was also a reminder of the effort to dig these bloody holes in the ground.
After the rain came down, I ventured out to the closest spot to park, walked along the old road (saw a little wren family) and conducted my calcs. Then onto GZ for a quick find.
I probably should have come out during the rain, sloshed around in the mud and crawled to GZ, just to fully appreciate the environment - but that was year's ago and this is now!!! Thanks AngelG27 for bringing me here and for the convenient spot for GZ!! A fave.

Another nice piece of military history that I was certainly not aware of. Retraced my steps to GZ for a quick find. Micro-size? A FP for the historical trail and TFTC AngelG27
A nice straightforward multi and GZ wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be, in fact I was super excited to see where it was. Such an interesting area that not too many people would probably know about. TFTC AngelG27!!!
14852. Found with minniek after work today.
I was after 2 caches today to fill in a Calendar gap (my 20/20 Challenge) so I picked minniek up from work and headed out to this one after a nearby Trad was found. Nicely set up Multi on a very interesting and not very well known subject. Once the info was gathered and the checksum ticked, off we went to GZ for a quick find. Signed the log, returned the cache, and we headed off. Spotted a couple of previous finders lurking around as well !
Thanks AngelG27 !! Fav Point !

Fitzy_1965 picked me up from work and announced that he needed a couple of caches for the day. Glad that I had spare shoes with me as the walk to GZ would have been a nightmare in heels.
What a great piece of history hidden away here. Loved collecting the information and talking a stroll through the trenches afterwards. Cache quickly found once at GZ.

Ooooh, have been a tad slack of late with GC caches. Canberra has so many interesting spots and this be one of them. Another highlight on the walk in from the Wetlands parking spot was seeing a huge, really healthy look fox and it wasn't me! No problems with the questions though I didn't wonder whether I stuffed one but check-sums were good and the sun was glinting off the cache. Cheers
Decide to head out here and do this cache, it very intereseting to see so i did my homework and worked out and head off to the GZ and log in. nice hide. TFTC AngelG27
Yep - looks like I'm going nuts! - Maybe next time I will read the instructions more carefully
