Our adventure for today included breakfast with LyonsPride3 and a few hours wandering around the Poowong Little Market. (Not so little anymore!) On our way home, I stopped off here with +Wife and EveTheStaffy to check out your worms.BTW: HBTY Worms like a bit of moisture, apparently. We drained the cache and dried it out.Took all the wet things and left a frog. (Seemed somewhat appropriate.) The logbook was in fine condition, albeit very wet, so that was dried of too before adding a couple of new ziplock bags. Thanks For the fun cache Thommo. All in good order here now.

Nice quick find thank you.

When I was younger I lived in a house on main south rd in hallora, on very windy and wet days some of the trees would fully uproot themselves leaving massive holes in the ground, my brother and I found lots of these massive worms some of them up to 3m long, enjoyed the cache and despite the hint took us longer than it should of, thanks for the cache and location

A huge thanks to Diablo1234 for fixing this one up in our absence.

26-Dec-22
The cache has been cleaned and dried. Cache is good to be found. Thanks

I’m (we) are currently 2300km away, if there is anyone who could perform maintenance we would be very grateful and would happily repay you, we would even happily post a path tag as a thank you also. Thanks TT

22-Dec-22
Water has entered the Sistema container which has turned some of the contents into an unrecognizable, gooey mess. A bit of maintenance would be most welcome. Thanks!

21-Dec-22
On a road trip to Waratah Bay with our caching friends and picking up a few caches along the way. This was the fourth cache for the day. The GPS was pointing across the road and without the hint we probably wouldn't have found the cache. The contents of the container are a bit soggy and gooey as is the log. A maintenance request has been logged by Wetjala. TFTC and the information which we would not have found out without caching bringing us here.

Picked this one up on our travels with caching mates today, was intrigued by the letter-box, just as well it isn't wired or he'd have hot mail. A bit damp and we had no replacement with us.

Yep that certainly is one BIG earthworm! I'm glad they live their life well underground otherwise if one slithered by the unsuspecting then it's possible the species would be closer to extinction than they are now!

Judging by the look on the woman's face in the cache description page she's either unimpressed at having her photo taken or not happy about holding a long worm - perhaps both!
TFTC

PS: Water has entered the container so there's a gooey mess within. Needless to say the log itself is a tad damp. Maintenance request to follow.

While touring around on some 'crappy adventures', we found ourselves too close to this one to ignore.
The cache was found quickly and the story of the Megascolides australis was read.
Thanks TeamThommo for showing us this site.

Found quickly while having a nice drive today with tassie expat. Interesting story you've attached TT. Thanks.

28-Oct-20
Another back road with frmen1. We haven't seen any giant worms either. Back when I was young, I remember a small piece of the back of a Mad magazine about them and we (my brother & I) assumed that it was a joke (we lived in Tassie). It wasn't until I moved here 17 years ago, that I found out that they were real! Never too old to learn. TFTC

The things you learn when geocaching. Thanks TeamThommo. Love that David Attenborough has been here! Found quickly, left ooshie. Tftc

Would love to hear a Giant Gippsland Earthworm gurgle!

07-Jun-20
We came here even though there was a road closed sign further back along, but as it’s a Sunday afternoon on a long weekend, and coming in from the north side we were able to get this as the bridge is being worked on. This one might be a little bit harder during the work week day if there’s workers around as it is in their taped off area. Found the sign with some interesting reading. We even saw a dead specimen in the earthworks- the Geokids thought it was a snake.

thanks!

Found this a while ago, just forgot to log (no Corona caching here). The kids were disappointed to discover that the giant earthworms don’t live in our home town of Leongatha! Very cool info board and unique biology lesson. Thanks for bringing us here and TFTC

We have heard of these but didn't realise how big an area they are located in. Thanks for the cache.

Out for caching day around Poowong and surrounds. I had a great time finding your cache TeamThommo, thank you so much for placing it.

Quick find thank you

I remeber the only time I have ever seen these was at the old giant worm on the way to Phillip Island, there is a colony off them in our estate in Warragul and the construction of several dwelllings had to be on stumps not slab built. I read the information sign and found the cache with no trouble at all. Thanks Team Thommo for the cache and high lighting this giant.

I’ve known about the great Gippsland Earthworm almost ever since I moved to Phillip Island over 30 years ago. I taught the children of two of the principal investors of the Giant Worm tourist attraction in Bass.
I’m so glad you found some information about them in such an isolated spot calling out for a cache in this area. The road leads you on to a pleasant drive in the hills south of Warragul.
The cache was found reasonably quickly and, after reading the information board we were on our way.

Catching up with some very late logs

We had set aside a few days to explore Gippsland with alansee endeavoring to aid him reaching 30,000 finds before the Queanbeyan mega event at Easter.

We visited rail trails, parks, mountains seeing beautiful scenery along the way as well as enjoying some lovely walks as well as some easy drive by's. The weather was mostly kind to us enabling us to search for the caches in comfort.

The Giant Earthworms are indeed fascinating creatures that we enjoyed learning more about from the cache page. The cach itself was a nice easy grab and sign.

Thanks Team Thommo for the cache.

Found with Team Crackers today. An easy find and it is all about worms!

27-Jan-19
Out with some friends putting some kms on the new geomobile, when the comment was made that surely there was some caches around here. I did not think they were interested but thought I should get at least one cache a month to keep the account going. Navigated here and I stood aside whilst the newbies found the cache.
Logged and left, thanks for the cache TeamThommo

We made a small detour on our way home from Drouin to get this cache. It is a pleasure to run across unstressful caches like this after all the micros we meet these days. TFTC.

05/01/2019 - 6.01pm - No. 1000 Big GrinBig Grin - 2nd of 3 for the day - with dgfb33 & Geogran1937. The cooler day after yesterdays scorcher encouraged us to head out to do some visiting ... and as luck would have it we passed some caches we hadn't found Wink
After visiting we headed home & we decided to head a little off our route to collect this one to make my total 1000 finds.
dgfb was a little ahead of me as I hadn't slipped on my 'going in the grass' shoes so spotted this cache. Found, signed & photo's taken of items inside showing 1000 in celebrations & cache returned as found. Log book a tiny bit damp but still ok for signing. Thanks for bringing us to this location Big Grin
A fav point in celebration for my milestone!!! Cool

Decided to venture off the main roads to seek out this cache and immediately saw a geotrail that gave away the hiding location. Had the log signed and everything back in place quickly . Interesting notation regarding the local worm life that gives this cache its name. Thanks for bringing us here TeamThommo

Oh, boy have these logs been on the back burner……… with the combination of a long hiatus and my phone with all my saved cache data of the ones I had yet to log being supposedly lost. With my eng/comp sci friend who managed to mess around with the phone and recover the data….. hooray time to celebrate. So that's why these logs are so late…. either thanks for the cache and the adventure….. and sorry for the generic log.

31-Dec-18
On the way back from the end of the year event did a
little detour and done a park and grab.
Thanks TeamThommo FTC.

Had some fun with the ants that are using the nearby wood as a home. But in the end retrieved the cache, signed the log and returned. TFTC

Back in the area again for work and I actually had the forethought and time available to plan to get this one on the way home. A nice quick stop, I've never noticed this sign before or the hiding spot. Must usually whizz past too quick. No sign of the local land owner who is in the know nor any sign of the ground dwellers today. TFTC!

Another road I would not normally travel on but there is a cache here found your cache easy enough signed and replaced TFTC

This cache was an unexpected detour on our way to Poowong. We used to live at Ruby, not far from Korumburra, and we often found massive worms in the garden. The worms are pretty big in Warragul too, but never have we found anything like a metre long
When our kids were young we used to love going to the Bass giant earthworm place. It’s a shame it’s closed now.
Thanks for highlighting this interesting location off the main road and an opportunity to find a cache not far from home.

As a kid I had been to a few camps at Poowong so knew all about the Giant Gippsland Earthworm. But certainly interesting reading about them again and telling the rest of the family.

This morning after the family had done our 5km run, it was decided we would go for a walk collecting some caches. Glad I remembered the Wuchatsch Reserve and the plan was hatched, which included collecting this one on the way.

The cache was found quickly in good condition and if the farmer didn't know about this one, it wouldn't take them long to find out.

Thanks for the cache Team Thommo
