Took awhile as the hide is not where I would have thought was appropriate. Didn't find the "mint tin at base of tree". TFTC
WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 20 - Norseman to Esperance via salmon Gums and Grass Patch. For what seemed like a short day driving, it seemed to take a long time. I did not even do all the side trips I had in my provisional plan. The highlight of the day was the brick works behind Salmon gums. I saw a few enjoyable locations as I went and was happy to reach my destination in the mid afternoon, allowing a bit of time to visit some shops and spend an hour or so at the local bar overlooking the dark bay. After a detour around some road works, I found the first of these roadside memorials. There have been fires in so many places and they have impacted so many people. I find it truly amazing to see the monuments here, and the ones a bit further along. It is only as I write this log I see the DNFs, but I managed to locate a cache here today, it was some distance from GZ, but that was out in the field and this was much more logical, even if it was not quite the kind of spot I would have chosen. Thanks for the cache Zane and Bianca46764.12 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & Geocaching HQ 2020 Lackey Tag A#460**Albida**
Unfortunately despite our best efforts today we were unable to locate your your cache. We will be back.
Such a sad history here. I remember when this happened. We couldn't find the cache here though
Found it on the ground. Not quite sure where it was meant to be, so have placed it somewhere close to where I found it. I've not been here before to the memorial but can remember hearing the awful news when the tragedy happened. Thought I'd find the cache on the way to the Yabby classic at Grass Patch. Thanks for putting the cache in an interesting place.
A trip to Perth checking out some of the awesome places along the way in ACT, NSW, Qld and NT. Grabbing some old caches and missing LGAs. TFTC.
Sad and tragic. A great tribute.

Heading back to WA for a visit. Attempted a couple of caches with the caravan on tow. Such a sad loss of life. Lovely memorial and glad the cache is still going here.

Out and about again, a visit north in nabbing another LGA (Dundas) and get a few around Salmon Gums. Covered a few km’s and found 13 caches. Had permission to replace a mint tin at the base of a dead tree.
Found a variety of hides and in different areas which made for a nice day. Generally quick finds today
Thanks to all the CO’s for the hides I found.

Trip down to the coastal towns of Bremer bay and Esperance. Great to get out and explore. Had to chase a few extra KM by heading up towards Norseman to help add to the cache find count also.
Thanks to the local COs for some interesting caches and some even better locations. TFTH

How moving What a lovely and well maintained memorial to these young folk who died. Thank you for bringing us here. All well with the cache . Cheers and tftc
In Esperance for a few days and a bit damp so decided a little trip out to do three scheduled was the way to go. This one was so very moving as well as the one a bit further along. The flags were a special touch along with the plaques. Thank you Bianca and Zane. We always enjoy your caches
I remember this heartbreaking story when it was reported on the news. It made me cry today. The sculptures are stunning and a fitting memorial to Tom, Julia, Anna & Cougar. TFTC Zane and Biana
Chickenhawk07 and I decided to head out for a few days and whilst it wasn’t a caching trip, we grabbed a few on the way. This was one.
Many thanks to Zane and Bianca for placing and maintaining Roadside Memorial. I was here at 3:17 am on Friday and this is my find 9004.

We were talking about this tragedy while driving through the fire regrowth on the way from Kal. Two beautiful memorials (the other is 350m up the road), thanks for putting a cache here. Found with Barneycache
pug002 found it on our trip to Esperance, got an early 6am start from Esperance apart from the flies it was pleasant. TFTC Zane and Bianca Such a sad memorial.
Some beautiful memorials here, thanks for highlighting them Zane and Bianca. RIP

Travelling from Esperance to Kalgoorlie today and breaking up the drive by stopping for caches. Thanks so much to the COs for placing and maintaining these caches and showing us your amazing local area.
Out and about caching today from Esperance to Kalgoorlie. Doing caches along the highway. Thank you to the CO for placing them and the location. Found cache and signed log.
Travelled from Esperance to Kalgoorlie today stopping for caches along the way. TFTC!
Very sobering and quite out of the way.
We certainly never would have known about these fires or loss of life if this cache hadn’t brought us down this road, so thank you. Cache in good nick, TB’s swapped out and log signed. TFTC. Fave point for the location and cause.

After rolling out the swag last night in the rain at Thomas River in the Cape Arid NP, I headed on to Esperance quite early, hoping to get up to Norseman and on the Hyden Road by tonight. But as is so often the case, with me at least, I got sidetracked and didnt even make it as far as Norseman! No surprise really, given that I wasn’t even planning to come down this way on this trip.
The weather has been woeful for the last day or so. It bucketed down last night and has rained on and off for most of the day. Great for the farmers, but not quite so great when you are camping. Looks like more rain as I set up camp tonight.
This cache brought a touch of sadness as I read the plaques at the memorial. Such young lives so tragically lost.
Thanks Zane and Bianca for the cache.

Thank you for highlighting this location to us. We managed to bump into three locals all dressed up at the location.
RIP to those souls who lost their lives. Fav point
Had a trip out to The historic ghost town of Gwalia planned for some time now and with the wife keen to check out some of the ghost towns and various ruins throughout the goldfields it was sure to be a great trip.
We travelled to Kalgoorlie and then upto Gwalia where we stayed at Hoover House, which is the old mine managers house for the sons of gwalia mine and offered great views of the pit.
We took a day trip out to Laverton and Leinster with a small detour to grab a few caches along the great central road. After our detours from Leonora we dropped back into Kal and down to Esperance for the last night of our trip.
A great trip away and thanks for all the caches along the journey. Thank you to the COs for their caches.

As other logger have said a very sad memorial. If it wasn't for geocaching you would miss it. Thanks for bringing us here. All good.
Wow! It was another very hot day today, so we went along with ilook4geo to look for some hot caches to match. Our base camp was at Norseman and we headed south at a fairly early hour, to pick up at least some of the caches while it was still a bit cooler. We found all the caches that we looked for and signed each log before putting everything back into place.
This is a worthy memorial for young lives lost in tragic circumstamces. Thank you Zane and Bianca for placing the various caches that we found around this district today.

Today was too hot to put many caches on the hunting list, but we did pick up some with goingplaces2. Each log was signed, each cache was replaced as found. Thanks Zane and Bianca for all these caches.
Very moving location. On the day we visited the scene was very pleasant. Difficult to imagine the circumstances that transpired here on the November day 2015.
Travelling from Esperance to Kalgoorlie and towards real summer at the same time . Temperatures were rising constantly and reaching 39°C when arriving at my destination ! Definitely not that chilly as it has been down at the coast.... There have been lots of chances along my way to stretch my legs and find a box en passant [:o)]. Very tragic story and seeing, that a fellow citizen was involved makes it even harder.... Simple, but impressive memorial and a favo for sure!

Very sad about it so happen awful... Thanks for shared with me. Signed the log and thanks Zane and Bianca for the cache and hunt.
Bit of cache maintenance on the way back from Esperance. All is well. Happy caching.
Found by Mary & David at 1040. How incredibly sad. A beautiful tribute to 3 overseas people who came here to work but who died. The bell has four names, so we assume the fourth was an Australian. The skeletal trees bear witness to this tragedy. Our thanks to Zane and Bianca.
My second day in Esperance and decided to head out of town for some history caches . TFTC and all the COs for placing them .....
Third day of our 'loop' trip following the wildflowers and grabbing some caches along the way.
Had intended to stay in Esperance a few days but the weather was foul and hail forecast and much the same for the next few days so decided to head for Kalgoorlie. I remember this catastrophe a few years ago - fantastic memorial. Thanks Zane and Bianca

We had planned on spending part of the day doing a few more caches in Esperance before heading north but the weather was awful so we decided to start travelling. Had to bypass a few caches we hoped to get because of the muddy roads but when we got to the turn off point to this one we saw it was bitumen. The poor old campervan really doesn't handle muddy sloshy roads very well.
So after a pleasant detour along the road we were soon at GZ where the most beautiful memorial was found. So nice to have a separate stone for each of the four people that died here. And each one had something specific to that person. Even Cougar the horse got a mention. These four people were so young too, and that made the whole thing even sadder.
Thanks for bringing us here, we would never have detoured without the cache.
A favourite point from us for making us aware of this place.

A fitting memorial. Thankyou for showing this. It reminds you how quick things can turn.
On the road back home from over east and after pushing a bit harder yesterday we spent the night at Norseman.
After deciding during dinner we would continue to push and be home on Monday a search for a suitable place to stay was started, it also meant creating a PQ for the new route, when it was downloaded I was pleasantly surprised to see two FTF’s available.
With the car packed up we started on the new road home.

What a beautiful and simple memorial for those that lost their lives.
The cache was found quickly and we claimed the pathtag and flag as a FTF prize.

One of the four people to lose their life to the fires was a friend of my mothers named Anna, a human rights activist from Norway.
She was very much afraid of horses, but had made a special connection with a horse named Cougar at the station she was working at, and had gone back to the station to save the horse from the fire.
Attached is a photograph of Anna and Cougar.
