I need a couple of geocaches today to take my daily total to six. This was the third being next closest to home - but not very close. Replaced rubbish log with a waterproof sheet and added an outer container since I had both on board. TFTC

Quite an easy find

01-Oct-24
This was an easy cache to find and I learnt about a family friends stupidity on going to fast down the hill and spun out at the bridge flipping his car onto its roof. He is also responsible for at least one of the concrete chunks missing from the batons on the bridge.

EtherNonBinary wanted to go bush during the school holidays to find some caches. They invited SammyBoi4512 to join us to get his numbers (and experience) up. We started on the trails through Summerhill, then hit the lunchtime Meet&Greet event, and now we've collected TwigNZ for an afternoon in the Pohangina Valley with our goal for the day being Fern Walk - the oldest active cache in the Manawatu. Having achieved our goal and made it back to the car, we're caching our way back to Palmy. And as the driver, I can stop when I like, so all the ones from now on are unfound for me RazzThis was a quick find at the most obvious location. ---The bridge at the bottom of this hill has some concrete batons missing, and a mate of mine is directly responsible for atleast one of them...~20 years ago, we were coming home from a theatre rehearsal camp at RangiWoods when we came across another attendee's car parked at this cache location with its hazard lights flashing - but no sigh of him. We cautiously drove down the hill and found a car on its roof just after the bridge SurprisedHe'd gone too fast down the hill, clipped the bridge, fishtailled down the road and gone nose first into the bank, flipping him onto his roof.He called his Dad who arrived and just laughed, told us to flip the car over, and said the amount of smoke pouring out of the exhaust pipe was to be expected for his level of early-20's stupidity Razz

Today StreetWalkerNZ and I are heading up the Pohangina Valley to find the remaining unfound 20/20 caches and some solved Wildbore multis plus what ever else takes our fancy. Then the scenic route back to Palmy via (late) lunch in Feilding and a few other caches.
I parked in someone's driveway and stayed in the car while SW dashed out to grab the cache. TFTC.

Interesting history on these caches, thanks for sharing the stories.

A second full weekend in the area and with early Autumn temperatures preceding a (likely) week of rain I was keen to get out and about for a days local caching. mrs c works on a Sunday at the minute so after dropping her off in Feilding I had a 'plan' of heading up the Pohangina Valley on one side of the river then return back on the other. My over-ambitious pocket query had a great number of possible options, though as the day wore on, and the dust accumulated on the Tiida I reined myself back in a little. Was still a great day to be out, nice and sunny, hardly any wind, and a haul of 64 caches, with 6 DNFs. Thanks to all COs but mostly watcache and Mar1sa for their prolific offerings.

Had the afternoon of work so decided to head out north of Ashhurst and do some walking on the gravel roads No 2 No 3 and No 4. Managed to find 31 caches, 1 DNF and 1 Did not attempt because of muggles. Not sure how far I walked but it was probably 10-12 km and my feet were getting sore. Stopped for a few caches on the main road before the walk. Quick find. Thanks for the smiley.

A quick easy find of another cache in the interesting Wildbore series. TFTC

31-Oct-20
#8649. A series of events were organised in the Manawatu this weekend up at Totara Reserve. Infoferret and I decided to come up for the four events leaving Wellington at 1pm on the Friday and picking up a lot of the newly published puzzles in this area. We decided to stay in Ashhurst rather than in a tent so left the accommodation we had booked early on Saturday morning and headed out to pick up some more puzzle finals prior to the community celebration event starting mid-morning.

And another in the Wildbore series. Good to pick up a history lesson while out driving in this valley. The Wildbore photos are a fantastic legacy showing a period of time in our history when life was a bit more physically demanding but simpler than the complicated world we live in. The cache was a quick find. Signed the log and left the cache as found. Thanks Madge Family for hiding it here.

I had recently solved a puzzle further along this road, so decided to head out today and collect a few caches out this way. spacenarwhale came along for the ride, acting as navigator and scribe. This was my ninth cache of the day and was a quick, straight forward find.
I have enjoyed the Wildbore series of caches and have been glad to pick up a few more of them today.
Thank you for the cache.

Today I was out caching with my son ThatWeirdGuy04 and one of my regular caching friends Stardust718, with the aim of travelling around the Pohangina Valley to attempt as many caches as we could manage in our day, concentrating on the Wildbore series but also stopping for any others along the way or else caught our fancy.

All logs for today were signed at either "Team S.T.T" or else simply "S.T.T" as space on logsheets allowed. The weather forecast had not been the best for today, but we set of in the hope that there would be enough dry spells or at least breaks in the rain to allow us to collect enough caches to be able to complete the Mystery at the Museum event currently running through Groundspeak. After about 8 hours of caching we had collectively found 46 caches, with a further 7 DNF's, which was sufficient to enable my son and I to complete MATM.

A quick find at GZ for this one. With the cache in fine condition, the log was duly signed and the whole thing replaced exactly as found.
Thanks for placing this cache.

20-Jul-19
I teamed up with ThatWeirdGuy04 and TwigNZ for a day of caching in the Pohongina Valley to work our way through the requirements for the Mystery at the Museum event. I'd looked at the Wildbore series when it first came out but hadn't had the chance to come out here and find them until now. We had a good day finding 46 caches in 8 hours between showers of rain. We signed the logs with our team initials - S T T or team STT depending on space. We were pleased with the condition most of the caches were in today so very little maintenance was required. The roads were however, rather narrow with the edge begin quite boggy so many of the caches we had to park away from and walk back.

A nice quick find here so the cache was found, signed and replaced.

It was the last day of March and we hadn't yet had a single find for the month so decided to head out this afternoon for a drive and to grab a cache or two. Had driven past this one on a previous foray up the valley at night but was past it before realizing and so in daylight found a suitable location to pull over and make a quick find between passing traffic. Slowly knocking off the series but there are still quite a few left to go. TFTC.

It was fun and easy once you found it.

30-Jan-19
After spending an extra night in Palmerston North for work, today was day 2, I knew that I had quite a few appointments that I needed to complete first before I would have a chance to go and have a look at going out and finding a cache for the day.

After finishing work in the late afternoon it was time to go back to my accommodation and have a rest and change my gear before deciding on what cache I was going out to find today. I decided that since it was still quite light that I would go for a drive out to the Pohangina Valley and look at finding a cache today, and if time allowed I would go and check out a couple more.

Having driven out here quite a few times now,the locals must be starting to get use to my vehicle and thinking that I am a local. The drive to GZ really didnt take that long, I think as you keep traveling these roads more and more it starts to become very familiar and time seems to stand still.

As I neared GZ, I realised that the cache was going to be on the other side of the road, so I decided to go a bit more further up the road and turn around so that I could park next to GZ. Arriving near GZ, I was able to get a safe parking spot within a couple metres of GZ, it was the best thing I did as it block the view from across the road.

After getting out of the car I walked over to GZ, while I checked the hint, I was quite surprise that this cache took a bit of looking to spot, but after a closer inspection I soon spotted something and realised that it was the cache.

Managed to retrieve the cache, signed and then replaced the cache back where I found it. Thanks Madge Family for placing this cache here and for bringing me to this spot, TFTC TNLNSL (14135). Another great historical spot in the Pohangina Valley that I didnt know about.

Now it is time to go back to the car and go and some dinner before heading back to my accommodation for the night.....

#10,493. Returned for another drive to Pohangina Valley East Road in Pohangina. GZ was all quiet at the time of our visit. Found after a bit of a search. No luck widening the area. Eventually returned to where we first looked, and then there it was. The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Once at ground zero this cache was a quick find.
Thanks for the smiley and the placement

bit of a geocaching weekend for us and at times we joined forces with other teams so logs have been signed either 2 Bulbars, 2x, bwx depending on how many in the team had signed the log before.
The weekend started midday Friday and finished about 6 pm sunday. We didn't go too hard and stopped for sleeps and good meals basing ourselves in Feilding . The weather was good all weekend although it did rain a little bit at night.
Many thanks to all the COs who placed these caches making it possipble for us to enjoy our hobby.
I must say sorry for all the cut and paste but if we really enjoyed a cache I will add a bit at the start of the comment so you don't need to read right through.
Thanks to our driver who supplied the car and the good person who put a thermos and a few snacks in the car for us so we could keep our strength up

Mega trip! I made the long weekend into an extra long weekend by taking the Friday off too, with the main aim to get to Pohangina Valley. Never mind that the SH1 has been closed from very early morning indefinitely due to a chemical spill... I am stubborn and was going to find a way there, so I did! TFTC!

Team BOP decided that with the MEGA rapidly approaching, we need to boost our numbers so we could try for a milestone number at the Mega. I am approaching my 3000th cache but was still about 325 caches away from that. Reaching the milestone may or may not happen, but this weekend certainly was about the numbers. I had an initial target I was trying to beat and that was my highest number of caches found in one day and we comfortably beat that, achieving 158 caches (subject to confirmation, once I log them all).
The best way to do the high numbers is with power trails and out here, there is a smorgasborg of powertrails.
We loaded up the van, gathered up all seven of us and headed to our accomodation somewhere in the middle of nowhere, getting there well after dark. The location was convenient, as it was right in the thick of a power trail territory.
There was no splitting us up, as we only had one vehicle, so we all experienced the cache locations, some beautiful and some not so.
As with powertails we have done in the past, there was a high proportion of waterlogged caches, but unlike powertails we have done previously, we managed to find every cache and were glad to be able to clear out an area. Also, with powertails, comes cut and paste logs, to which I apologise for.
Thanks to all those CO's who have placed the caches out there. Without you, our fun road trips wouldnt exist. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and got home completely shattered. It was so worth it.

Team BOP on tour in the Manawatu-Whanganui Region... With Gap (of Fap and Gap), (Mr) Davidson clan, McJandals, NZFlossy, Philip.Perry, and TNXPro.

This weekend had been in the pipeline for ages. It was always going to be a mission for various team members to get coordinated leave passes... We secured accommodation in the rural heart of the Manawatu. This placed us well within reach of a massive trail of caches... We travelled in one vehicle, so our journey was filled with lots of laughs, and good times... Fortunately, the majority of caches were in place and were fairly quick to locate - thanks to straightforward hints and great coordinates. Many of the caches had not been found in a while, so containers were waterlogged, and logbooks were wet... Thank goodness for waterproof paper. A huge thank you also, to the various COs who made our weekend worthwhile...

Another interesting piece of localised history. TFTC.

Road trip time again! This weekend Team BOP consists of Davidson Clan, TNXPro, Squirrelnutcase, FapAndGap, McJandals, NZFlossy & myself. We had a very narrow list of ‘must gets’ so this trip was essentially a numbers mission. As with these trips, most of the caches were found quickly and in good condition thanks to accurate coords and straight forward placements. We replaced some logs and containers but most had water proof paper and were all good. A huge thank you to the co’s as this was a beautiful area to visit and there was certainly an abundance of geocaches!!

Everything was fine here, TFTC.

Embarrassed to say that we found this one on the second visit to GZ on our way home. In our defence a cop pulled up the driveway opposite and sat in the driveway - we quickly moved on but not after numbty bum sprung across the drain for a look following a geo trail. Found quickly on second visit. TFTC

Out with ritaryanandjj to knock off some of the Wildbore series. This log should read "quick park n grab" but instead we made it harder on ourselves by not looking for the obvious hide. It didn't help a policeman pulled up a nearby drive. 2nd attempt on the way back to Ashhurst resulted in a face palm action. TFTC

We particularly like caches that give some interesting local history and the Widlbore Series certainly does that. Previously we have also studied the information and many photographs of Pohangina's early settler days that are displayed in the County Fayre tea-rooms in Pohangina Village. The Wildbore family and Charles Wildbore's photos feature prominently in that.
We had decided to hold off on completing the series until August-September when we will need about 50 caches each month to complete the 250 a Month Challenge. We had decided to forgo the Hidden Creatures Challenge so we would have enough for the next two months. However, yesterday it waved the tantalizing information at us that we only needed five more to make 50 and the Dragon. We couldn't pass up on that so off we went to the Pohangina Valley again this afternoon to find the necessary number. Wink

This was #2 for us this afternoon and a nice quick find - which is good as you are very exposed to curious eyes here. Fortunately all was quiet on this early Wednesday afternoon. TFTC

Was doing some work around the house when a load of pings kept coming from the direction of my phone. Checked to find a lovely treat of some new caches, perfect to assist with getting nearer to the World turtle in the Hidden Creatures challenge.

I finished my tasks and decided to head out to collect some of these before heading around to family for an afternoon of board games at my brother’s. Another relatively easy find and another great history lesson. TFTC [FTF] at 1307
