So, for whoever may find this helpful, some simplified instructions on how to get offline maps for your Garmin / Android phone and update them yourself.

These maps are based on OpenStreetMap - a worldwide user-based mapping project. They are completely free and offer great detail around the world. And if you find places missing on there, you are welcome to join up and help map the world, it is not too hard to do! Visit https://www.openstreetmap.org for that.

Garmin GPS:
1) [garmin.openstreetmap.nl](http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/)
2) [alternativaslibres.org](http://alternativaslibres.org/en/downloads.php)

1) These maps look nice on small and bigger screens alike, and usually have great detail, from wee walkways to roads and POIs. They support routing as well. Works on most Garmins - Oregon, Montana, Nuvi, eTrex, GPSMAP etc. This is the map I use as my everyday map.

On this site, the easiest and quickest way is leaving all the options untouched and just select a predefined country from the according continent's drop-down menu. Just select a country, wait for it to load and most likely you'll be able to download your map straight away. For less popular countries, you might have to enter an email address and the link to download will be sent there.
Once you've clicked on the download link, the file you need is osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip.
Once downloaded, extract or open it and put the gmapsupp.img file in "Garmin" folder on your GPS device / SD card. Optionally you might want to rename the file before you put it on becasuse there might already be another map on there with the same filename and just for it to be more intelligible, say NewZealand.img.

Now, if you want you can also tick the box "Enable manual tile selection" on the website and select map tiles by clicking on them. Works great if you have limited storage or want to get bits of different countries in one file. In this case, you will need to enter your email address for the map to be made and a notification will be sent there when it's ready.

2) This site offers maps that have even greater detail than above, with building outlines where available and topographic information - elevation lines. Thanks to LINZ the New Zealand map from this site is awesome for hiking and backcountry experience. I find them a bit harder to read on small screens than the first one. They also take up more storage space and can be slower to load if you have an older device.

Just find the country you need in the list and download the map. [Link for NZ](http://alternativaslibres.org/en/download.php?file=../files/gmapsupp_New-Zealand_LINZ.zip) Same as above for putting it on the device.

Android on c:geo:
Openstreetmap based too, great to have to save some mobile data or for offline/poor connectivity caching.

1) [download.mapsforge.org](http://download.mapsforge.org/maps/v3/)
2) [openandromaps.org](https://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads)

1) Great all round street map, no topographic information.
*Find the country you need, download the file.
*Connect up your phone and make sure it's in a mode that allows to transfer files over
*I usually just make a folder "maps" on the phone and put the file there.
*Disconnect, open up c:geo, go into settings-maps-directory with offline maps and just select the folder. Usually it finds it automatically for you.

2) Again, option that has topographic detail and this one has changeable themes for different scenarios - cycling, hiking, city.

Select country/region, download the map file, unzip it and put on your device as per above.
Then, Download the [Elevate 2 Normal version rendertheme](https://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate2_L.zip) and unzip contents in a folder on your phone. I usually just make another folder named "mapthemes"
In c:geo settings choose the folder for map themes.
Now, when using Live map, you can switch between themes, by tapping the dots and hitting "Select map theme"

Great to catch up, talk geocaching, and get even more excited about the upcoming mega! Thanks for organising!!

Attended and thankful to ivss-xx for loading local maps, but more importantly he cleared a filter that I had unknowingly set to prevent me from seeing my geocaches. Thanks for your help.

Bother forgot to turn up. You'll be gone by now. Must try harder

Thanks for hosting the event and for doing those changes to my phone. Those maps look really great. See you and Amber up in Wellington. I picked up two travel bugs.

Sadly there is no large event in New Zealand in 2019 but there are a few Mega events planned in Australia. I plan on going to the OzGeomuster in July. To find out more visit this site: https://www.ozgeomuster.com.au

Thanks to everyone for coming!
I wasn't aware about the impending movie screening up until yesterday so was bit worried that it could get into our way but luckily, didn't look like they had too many witch-watchers turn up. Sometimes these movie screenings get real packed.
And in all my worries I forgot to bring my personal logbook and the trackables I hold! Oh well, Wellington it is then for them!

It was nice to meet and chat with new and familiar faces alike, and also nice that I could be of help to other geocachers, by updating their maps.
It's not hard to do, and can make your caching life much easier at times Smile
I will post the sites I use for getting maps as an announcement on here too.

I've been informed that the venue is doing a movie screening at 7:30, so we might need to wrap up our eventing at around 7:20. This also means there will be an influx of muggles from around 6:30.
I will be around from 5:30 so feel free to come before 6 if you can and want to.

And, if you want to watch the 90ties witch comedy Hocus Pocus, you are always welcome to stay on and watch the movie. (Can't guarantee the availability of event logbook after 7:20 anymore though, as I might not be staying.
