Another spot along the Broken Hill tourist trail ticked off. I have been here several times before I knew about geocaching. Nice to have a reason to be revisit these interesting places. TFTC!

21-Oct-24
Today we visited the memorial to the miners who have died from accidents and incidents in the mines. There are so many. The reason for the visit today was to see the name of Janets great uncle who died in 1915 two days after being injured in the mine. We also visited his grave site at the Broken Hill Cemetery and also the grave of Brad's great grandfather who died here in 1898 when Brads grandfather was only 9 days old. And while we were here we thought we should do the EC. Answers collected, sent and accepted. TFTEC yet again FreddoBrad and Janet are on another epic trip. This time across South Australia to Broken Hill. Then through central and Northern NSW and up into Qld where we will be picking up a new hybrid house-on-wheels. Then we will head south down through more of NSW via Sydney to catch up with B2. Then further south until we get into Victoria from where we will head back into South Australia. Along the way we will grab caches of opportunity.

I have visited before but only briefly, so good to have another look up here, and at things from a different angle. Can't recall if I noticed the green before, but do now and know more about it too! After a long period of outback, yesterday we turned east at Port Augusta and enjoyed lush greenery and gumtrees of the lower Flinders Rangers as we passed through. Quite a contrast. Having travelled late, we arrived in Manna Hill last night to stay in their towns rest area. Waking to another very different scenery of flat dry country in a little town passed by most travellers, so many trucks, and the odd train. Goats! I love these tiny litte feral goats, it's great to see them as we drive past, yes, the little things amuse me! Took time exploring towns as we passed. Broken Hill kept us way longer than intended or we had time gor, but just made the time. And it was HOT!!! Only 30C but a different heat, still nicer than cold though! We pushed on late into the night, Nyngan was our limit and had a great rest stop facility in town. A good place to stop after a long but great day, thanks fir your cache!

Veni. Vidi. Vici. Scripsi. Staying in Broken Hill for a few nights and grabbing caches as time permits as we are travelling with muggle friends. Today, we decided that it was time that we visited the memorial at the top of the mullock heap. Went through the memorial, and it was particularly touching and also quite distressing, looking at some of the information. It is amazing how safety has advanced in major ways since the beginning of the mine. Wandered around and gathered some information for the answers that have been sent.Gratias pro cache Prof Freddo

T-Tech and I are travelling on the Indian-Pacific train from Sydney to Perth! Wahoo! Tick that one off the bucket list Our first stop was Broken Hill and we took the United We Stand and Miners Memorial excursion. Loved learning the history of the strikes in such an entertaining way, and we enjoyed the tour around town. After seeing the Memorial and getting a panorama photo of the train, we headed to GZ to get the questions sorted, and I have sent my answers to the CO. TFTEC, Freddo.

Its great to finally visit Broken Hill and see the history here in so many different ways. Geology, man-made geology, natural beauty, some land rehabilitation and the history of the town. Today we drove this climb which gave us views across to the town. This strangely man-made mountain of waste was quite amazing and also in someways devastating. I guess the view of this mullock hill is just something that the locals take for granted, but it is hardly truly inspiring; more of a realisation of the devastation to this beautiful part of the world. We are grateful to be shown this area through caching and the use of polymer here with something we were unaware of. We have sent our answers to the CO Thanks Prof Freddo Domsky

We forgot about the half hour time difference and had expected to be up here for sunset. We failed. There was still quite a bit of glow though, so our trip up definitely wasn't wasted. We really enjoyed visiting the memorial and taking in everything the town has been through. A fun earth cache on the way back to the car. tftc

#19598 - 4:31:00 PM; Day four of a road trip taking the long way to Adelaide from the National Capital with the geohoney. Spent the night in Broken Hill, and after grabbing brunch, we set off to Silverton for some sightseeing, collecting a few caches in and around the town, before heading back. On return to Broken Hill, we did more sightseeing and caching as well. Headed up the hill to visit the Miner's Memorial and the big red chair, then did the geology lesson, gathering the information required for this cache. Answers were sent to the CO who came back with a quick OK. TFTE Freddo Smile

A sunset visit to GZ today, after flying in from Brisbane a little earlier and catching up with friends in town for dinner. I recommend a visit to the Tipsy Camel if you havent tried it. Wink On arrival, I was concerned it would be a little too dark to study the geology on the hill, but it was generally ok. I did follow up a couple of days later before heading home though, to ensure I could compile appropriate answers to the questions. Big GrinI snapped some sunset shots while here, then we wandered over to the memorial. Theres a lot of names on the walls which is sad, but I guess given the population that work in the mines and the length of time mining has been occurring here, its inevitable that this list would grow over time. SadA nice start to our weekend in The Hill, on what is our first visit. Thanks for the E/C Freddo.

Being on an excursion from the Indian Pacific didn't give much of an opportunity for caching but this was a convenient one at their last stop on the tour. Great views, which prevented a proper search for the green hill (which is only green on the top at the moment) until they were leaving. Thanks for providing Owl's only find!

Freddo and Team Waldron headed to warmer climes around Broken Hill, Cobar, Bourke, Cunnamulla
and Charleville.

After a cold start in Broken Hill the weather improved once we got further north. Sadly our last night in Broken was wet which, pardon the pun, put a dampener on things.

All up it was a great week away and lots of caches were found with only 3 dnfs.

Thanks to all who placed and maintained their caches. The occasional cache was damaged and we refurbished it and we also left new logbooks as required.

Easy with the cache owner in the car.

We continued today our tour in NewSouthWales, AUS, and thereby searched, found and logged this interesting Earth-Cache.

The weather was - said in one word – simply best. The good hidden caches and the being on holidays kept us the whole day in a good mood.

The cache had good coordinates, and thus was easy to find. The answers were sent.

Thanks to Prof Freddo for the generation of this nice cache Mummy, why is part of that hill painted green? (with the proper agenda), for leading us here and for showing us this funny location as well as the ongoing maintenance of this cache.

PS: Please forgive us the uniform log which is needed due to timing problems - if necessary special actions and happenings are there described where they appeared.

Greetings from Germany together with the hope to meet somewhere like event or wood.

Together with my son, I am on a camping trip from Sydney to Broken Hill and back. On our 3000 km journey over 11 days we have seen some wonderful little towns, beautiful landscapes and many interesting geocaches.

Driving up That Hill for the EarthCache. Unfortunately the cafe was closed so I was not able to get my caffeine fix. I loved the big bench overlooking Broken Hill. The memorial for mine workers nearby was impressive. Interesting to read how these unfortunate mine workers came to an early end of the lives.

We are on our way to Rutherglen Mega. Today we are seeing Broken Hill and caching here as well.

I had seen all the signs to go the the Lode Reserve, so we followed the signs. When we were there I checked for caches and bingo there's an Earthcache. We have been to Lightning Ridge, Cobar, White Cliffs and now Broken Hill. We've really added to our Earthcache finds! Flinders Ranges next!

Cruising around Broken Hill today. This spot will be mint once the cafe is finished.

What a year Sandyofthesea and I have had. We kitted out the Prado and took off from Perth, Western Australia at the start of April 2022 to travel more of Australia using geocaching as a guide to see the sights. We started with the Nullabour, Eyre and York Peninsulas, the Riverlands, visited family in Victoria and then back in SA it got cold. Flinders and the Oodnadatta Track was amazing and we finally warmed up in Dalhousie Springs. The Alice beckoned and then a change of plan and we ended up tackling the Tanami Track to the Kimberley and Bungles Bungles. Territory Day in Darwin was unhinged - please try and do it! The Gulf, the coast and the car breaker ‘Old Tele Track’ to the top of Cape York. This is a must but it’s not easy! Eventually made it to Brisbane to get some fixes to the car….. let’s see where we end up.

Freddo, I found Mummy, why is part of that hill painted green? today. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache.

Up this way for a lookout with Purrfect Di.
Seeing some sights, taking some pictures, located your earthcachey spot!

There was some touristy stuff to do and see, and a cafe that needs a bit of work still.
Green seems a good colour when your grass won't grow. Don't they do a similar thing painting the Adelaide Hills? Sent message to CO with answery stuff...

Thanks Freddo for placing another earth cache on our ever growing Aussie geo-map Cool

Driving and hiking around wherever we can - searching, spotting hidden items and signing cache logs using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Whereyougo, Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S21u, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or often with just a guess or plain old dumb luck WinkCoolBig Grin
Plenty of the luck stuff actually !!!

*All the online logs are composed and published with GSAK of course.*

Warning ! Caching is a very hazardous activity!
Look out for sand, mud, floodwaters, snakes, surprise cliffs, roos, wombats, things falling from trees, bulldust, and floods, and try not to get tetanus from rusty mint tins and don't fall off your ladder...
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- and do watch out for bugs !!! . [xx(]

Ensure Travel Bugs are the Only bugs you share and pass on Wink (Covid cancels caching!)
Keep a safe distance - cache the countryside Big Grin

Great of all those placing quality caches out and about around the country areas,
in sensible safe places especially! - it keeps our game fun, and interesting Cool

Really appreciate you reading all this extra addition to the log word count! There's a challenge somewhere out there, apparently! You win a virtual smiley for the effort and getting to the end of the log Wink Maybe if I worked out where I could do it and go back to normal logs again ! If you find the challenge let me know and we can put an end to these long logs !!!
