A very quick school tour, means a limited look, in a massive building.

We came to the war memorial today on holiday, I found this cache with dad. I liked the dioramas best.

Hi Aquilus1, We found your 2.0 1.5 Virtual Virtual Australian War Memorial on 26/9/2024.Find 3145 for BFMC.A school holiday road trip to Sydney for a bit of a break. Targeting unfound virtuals for this trip and whatever else we come across that we can sneak off and find given we have a mix of cachers and non cachers.Whoops. Nearly stiffed up here. After leaving I realised the qualifying phot had to be from inside. Eek,I didnt selfie inside, I grabbed one on the way in knowing full well I usually forget such things. Fortunately, I grabbed a shot of the eternal flame plaque that was an accidental foot selfie. Thats attached as a qualifier, and a couple of other pics as well cos the qualifier is so boring Love this place, its the whole reason we decided to detour for a night on the way back to Melbourne. TFTC.

Here for the last post. Cheers

Its always a very sobering experience to visit the AWM. So many sacrifices, & so much loss. This room is one of my favourite at the memorial. After walking along the honour roll & seeing the thousands of names, we entered to see the tomb of the unknown soldier, & the spectacular stained glass representations of the roles played in service for our country.Lest we forget.

I had the honour of speaking at the Last Post Ceremony. Attached is one of the many photos taken of the event.

08-Sep-24
While attending the nearby event, I realised that I'd be in the correct location to take a photo for this virtual while attending the Last Post Ceremony.I headed in with BeeSprout0 and headed upstairs to grab the required picture while the ceremony was being set up in anticipation of QueenK8's speech (which was truly magnificent).I really must make a proper return at some stage and see how the exhibits look in more detail than my memory of Grade 6 Canberra Camp can muster up (and, as an aside, it felt a little bizarre to have that thought juxtaposed with the sight of another crop of schoolkids seated beside the pool of reflection!)Thanks to Aquilus1 for placing this virtual here! Smile

Pretty easy and love this place, visiting from Sydney and leaving this afternoon so I managed to achieve my first ever virtual cache! Will send answers to you Aquilis1. TFTC=)

Overwhelming but beautiful memorial. I would not be alive without Frank Partridge

Sobering visit to the war memorial today. Thanks for bringing me to this event place.

Goldy is visiting Canberra with my friend "goldyscacheelf" for caching, museums and history.I have taken my foot off the pedal recently when it comes to caching. However, I have never been to the ACT before so the Territory is my cache oyster.I'm targeting the virtuals and highly favourited caches around the area.I did mostly caching today before heading back to the War Memorial again.I was here yesterday for the galleries and last post ceremony. However, I was doing so much reading inside that I didn't even check the map!I got myself a second ticket and came back. I also had a request to lay a poppy on behalf of a friend back in South Australia. Today was a bit more emotional for me. I laid a few poppies:Jamie Ronald LARCOMBE. 1989-2011 (Aged 21, Afghanistan) Killed in Action. Hugh THOMSON. 1879-1902 (Aged 22, South Africa) Enteric Fever. (Not listed on the wall)Clarence TIDSWELL. 1898-1917 (Aged 19, Belgium) Killed in Action. Some are related, some are known through friends. Lest We Forget. Thanks Aquilus1 for this virtual cache, which brings Goldy's total find count to 4189 on the 14th of July 2024.

Stunning tribute to all those who have lost their lives serving their country. TFTC.

Visited today while caching here for one day only. I visit my father uncle name. Thomas Marshall of the 22nd battalion died at the battle of Fromelles when we lost over 5500 soldiers. So so sad. You may think WRAACie is a strange caching name actually it is an acronym for the Womens Royal Australian Army Corps and I was one for 10 years many years ago.

30-Jun-24
Very interestingly I have never actually been inside the Australian War Memorial! Well actually I was discussing today's geocaching with the trusty parents and supposedly I visited this placer when I was the ripe old age of four. But you bet that I retained absolutely zero recollection of that visit in the present day. So for me it was effectively my first visit inside and it was great!Once I had booked my tickets I was soon cruising down Limestone Av on the trusty bike and getting drenched in the process. Once I made it to the War Memorial I completed the nearby earthcache before struggling to figure out where the actual entrance was. Managed to find it and after passing security I was struck by the aircraft section first! Amazing!Originally I was just here to complete this virtual, the AL and the multi, but I ended up staying to the end of my allocated two hour session! There was a lot of super cool stuff, and it being effectively my first visit made everything more interesting! However, my favourite had to be the aircraft section, I love planes!Reflecting this I've attached three images since I can't capture everything in one. Of course there is more but I don't have room for that many. Thanks for the great virtual Aquilus1! Favourite for encouraging me to properly visit the War Memorial!

Brilliant! This is my second ever visit to the war memorial, and I didnt know what Geocaching was last time! We went on the guided tour, and we eventually found a suitable place to snap a picture.Greetings from Brisbane!Nice one, thanks for the cache!Coolabah OUT!!!

21-Jun-24
A very sobering place to visit, but a place well done. Our guide explained how the placing of poppies came into existence and continues to this day, and then explained the intricacies of the design of the domed area.A photo is included, but we have sent answers as well!It was a full day today. With rain predicted for the day earlier in the week we had booked into the War Memorial. It was a really worthwhile visit and unlike our normal choice, we chose to take a guided tour. Our guide was a lovely man who was most knowledgeable, and had a store of great anecdotes. After finishing we headed outside to work on Ad Labs and some caches, trads, multis and puzzles. Then it was off to Old Parliament House where we "maintained the Rage" and then cached until heading off to a Winter Solstice Event.Thank you for your efforts in creating and maintaining the cache Aquilus1.**SKI Pair****

Waiting for the Last Post Ceremony, looking through the memorial toward the Parliment House off in the distance. This was my favorite of 3 virtuals in Canberra. A beautiful memorial concluding with a moving ceremony. As a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer I was very impressed! Thank you!

a great visit at the War Memorial. Greetings from Switzerland

Sir_spectre and I visited the War Memorial of a couple of occasions while in the ACT on holiday.

22-Apr-24
We made the last service Tuesday and booked a tour of the Australian War Memorial Wednesday, Anzac day was booked out. We walked around the Australian War Memorial for the 2 hours allowed. fav point for the location. Found with Mogni. Myself and mogni are headed off to Canberra on the " I missed the Capital GeoBash Mega " holiday, since last minute family problems came in to play and we had to adjust our plans by a few weeks. On the way over we targeted multi's, wherigo's and puzzles to make sure we had 25 in each or at least close to that total ( or more ) as possible, getting as many new New South Wales LGA's as possible, the 17th most favourite point NSW cache and every cache size in New South Wales. In the ACT it was getting 2 of the 5 oldest letterboxes, oldest wherigo in Australia, 2nd oldest earthcache ( with a side trip to get the oldest earthcache of course ), and ACT oldest cache too. I also hosted a CITO and planned on getting every different cache type i could and every different cache size as well. I also needed 9 more virtuals this trip to get my virtual count over 100. Finally canberra was far enough away from house to complete the well aged well travelled cacher 0 to 1000 kms with a cache every 10 km's ( i only need 7 more caches to complete )Leaving the ACT it was going via Victoria to get there last active web cam cache and slowly getting a total of 20 finds in each LGA i passed through if i had enough time plus also hosting a CITO in Victoria as well. A busy 11 days. Trust me by the end of the holiday you would have thought the 6 meter ladder weighed more than 13 kg's to amount of times it was used or carried up hills or over creeks. If your cache was found with a broken container/lid it was replaced or if the log was full it was replaced or a extra log if the container was big enough ( except for nano's, do your own maintenance on nano's.

We are camping with the scouts at the Governor General's front lawn this week, and one of the activities is a guided tour of the war memorial. Thanks for the virtual cache!

As an American visiting the War Memorial (shortly before ANZAC day of all things!) I really learned a lot and gained a new appreciation for Australian self-identify and patriotism - especially regarding Gallipoli and the significance of WWI and WWII. The entire memorial and museum was incredible, I hope I get an opportunity to come back after construction is complete. For my log I attached a picture of my favorite statue at the site - animal memorials are always special to me but this one in particular really jumped out for the amount of detail and meaning that was included in it. TFTC!

It's been a long time since I visited the war memorial in Canberra - the last was a school excursion in the 1980s. The dioramas were some of my favourite displays. Thanks for placing this cache here.

A beautiful, quiet place for a little reflection on our countrys history.Im sure weve looked at this Virtual Cache before on previous visits to this wonderful place, a place well always come back to.This Memorial has so many amazing displays. We put a Poppy on the Wall today for our Great Uncle. We found his name in the section behind the word Gallipoli on the outside wall, which was facing the Pool of Reflection. He landed at Gallipoli on ANZAC Day and unfortunately, never made it home. His brother, our Grandfather, made it home and then went back to serve the country in WWII.Weve got the information, and this time were logging it before we forget. Its our last day here in Canberra for this trip, time to turn around and head back home across the Nullarbor again. Definitely via a few detours as we go.Thanks for the Virtual Cache.TFTVC

Full time Nomads, travelling around Australia since 2014. Still in Canberra after the GeoBash. With the forecast weather event of 40mm of rain today, we had booked a visit at the War Memorial for this morning. We were extremely impressed with the audio tour. At lunchtime we bumped into pood at Poppy's cafe and returned inside for Mr F to visit the Korea and Vietnam displays that we had missed on our first visit whilst Mrs Felix and pood tackled some AdLabs, the virtual and the Earthcache.Logging with permissionTFTC Aquilus1 Cool

Exciting times over the next couple of weeks as we takeoff for the Capital GeoBash in Canberra! Its going to be a flood of Sandgropers over east, with a host of West Aussies making the trek east for the event. Im travelling with fellow Cockburn Crew members Leg5 and Barnzy12, starting in Sydney and hitting the road to Canberra, before returning back to Sydney. Honourary mention to our fellow member, Cravo10, who couldnt make it after recently introducing a new geocacher to the world the week prior. Once in Canberra, the agenda is set, well team up with a host of Western Australians to conquer caches. Collectively, were hoping to make it the biggest ever weekend for cache finding. Following the event, the journey continues back to Sydney, with a mission to clean up caches and new Local Government Areas (LGAs), ensuring no cache is left unturned in this epic geocaching adventure. Something tells me that well need a holiday after this, well, holiday. All logs have been signed as WAC to save space, abbreviation for Western Australia Crew. Cheers Aquilus1! Big GrinJoin us in Augusta, in Western Australias South West, for WA Goes Big 2024 (GCAGV8Y) on Friday 20 to Sunday 22 September. Log your will attend now!

Yay. Mega week has finally arrived. Didnt get much caching done at the hometown Adelaides Leap Year Mega. The minute it was announced I booked my single room. Then, muggle husband decided he wanted to come. Mmm. We all know that means .. less caching, so targets had to be sought. But at least theres a vehicle. This cache is a target. Mostly challenges and virtuals. Today was actually super special for my slightly muggle husband (who has his own account though). We started the day off at the Archives in the administrative building to view some momentos belonging to a fabulous story my husband unveiled around his late grandpas service. We also laid a wreath for during the Last Post service for both of our grandfathers. Many photos attached together with a favourite point, well deserved. Cheers from SA.

Found by The Empire + HVisiting the War Memorial in Canberra was a deeply moving experience for us, although our exploration was somewhat limited by ongoing development works. As we approached the memorial, we were met with the sight of scaffolding and construction equipment surrounding much of the exterior, indicating that renovations were underway.Despite the external closures, we were determined to make the most of our visit and explore what we could of the interior. Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by the solemn atmosphere and the wealth of historical artifacts and exhibits that surrounded us.Wandering through the galleries, we were captivated by the stories of bravery and sacrifice depicted in photographs, artifacts, and personal mementos. Each display served as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war, honouring the courage and resilience of those who had served. Thanks for the virtual cache Aquilus1.-MVirtual #243

Found while attending the Mega event in Canberra over Easter. Answers sent by a member of our group for review and approved.Edward John Luke is Freddo's great uncle. A member of the 16th battalion he died during an advance towards Quinn's Post, up a steep face called Bloody Angle, Gallipoli on 12 May 1915. Age 21. Lest we forget. The trip bit.Easter geocaching festival of twenty twenty four. This time it is the turn of Oz Mega GeoBash MEGA event in the nation's capital. It is time for a road trip across country to Canberra in the Sporty Pajero Sports. Freddo and Gridge98 traveling from Adelaide via a strange inland route that takes in scenic rural locations, dusty roads, punctured tyres, overheating batteries, various tools of the trade, special campgrounds, and lots scope for many many geocaching finds. Along the way we saw running emus, jumping kangaroos, wandering deer, dead foxes, herds of wooly sheep and stray steers.Arriving in Canberra we met our colleagues e.gregory1, featherwaite, team walron, courtney rose, davidwazza, e_smilie, and georode, signing as ABP, plus a huge group of other like minded excited mega geocachers attending event after event, and more events.Day one. Canberra to QueenbeeyanDay eight. Canberra to AdelaideThe generic bit.I will apologize right now, because everything from here on is here solely for the purpose of padding the word count and winning that one hundred word diamond badge again. Somebody moved the goal posts. So many caches to find. So many caches to log. We find them, sign them and replace them. This particular geocache was found using one of the following GPS enabled devices, Garmin GPSr, Montana 680t, Oregon 650 or Dakota 20 and an Apple iPhone 11 using the marvelous Cachly app. Waypoints and paperless geocaching were downloaded via GSAK 9. Log prepared, checked and submitted using GSAK publish logs macro.Warning, this hobby can be addictive. It can lead to exercise, meeting new people and finding interesting places you might not have known existed otherwise. Beware: you may have fun. Apologies for the generic part of the cache log. Day 6 of our Capital Geobash mega-holiday. After flying our car-flag at Mt Ainslie this morning, we headed back down the mountain and spent the majority of the rest of the day walking up and down Anzac Avenue, then a visit to the Australian War Memorial. We arrived to book a ticket and were lucky enough to be squeezed in at the end of the queue for a current session for immediate admission. The displays have changed significantly since our last visit back in 2019 so we enjoyed spending some time here exploring it further. Love the new diaramas. Thank you for placing your virtual cache here Aquilus1 - a very worthy spot and a favourite from us. Lest We Forget.

Today, I did a tour of the Australian War Memorial with my muggle friend who is a volunteer guide there. WOW!! She is really good at this!! ?? I was pretty sure I knew the answers to the questions asked in this virtual cache, but confirmed them on the tour. This place makes me cry every time I visit and today was no exception. Yet every visit to our nation's capital must include a visit here. Hopefully, the renovations will be finished by the time I come back again, but, somehow, I don't think they will be. Every Australian should visit here at least once in their life. TFTC

Geobash Easter Mega - Day #2 (Good Friday 29/3)For day two, my main focus was the finding the mega site ALs and attending my second of three (pre-registered) tours. This made three tours total so far. I started the day at the mega site and I found the challenge caches around the perimeter of the mega site before heading in for the ALs I ended up finding most of them before heading off to todays tour. Todays tour was at the Australian War Memorial. Another great tour to attend as I once again learnt lots and saw some of the newly updated (to me at least) exhibits. After a late lunch I headed back to the mega site to find the last of the ALs. Once they were complete, I headed off to find some solved WIGs before heading back to the motel. I also found two others which has been on the to-find-list for far too long. Now time to get some sleep for my really busy day tomorrow. TB visit. If the cache wasnt signed as JohnoMawbs, it was signed as JM or as the tour group name. A big thanks to the CO for adding this cache to game for the Geocaching community to enjoy. Big Grin TFTEs & TFTCs Big GrinAfter finding most of the AL's at the mega site, it was time to head off to the Australian War Memorial Tour. This was one of the one of the caches I found with the group. I chose option two and have added my photo to the log. It shows my shoulder with the unknown soldier. Thanks for the great virtual. With lots of ALs and caches here we couldnt resist a tour of the war memorial. Luckily I had read that you need to pre-book as it was all booked out on arrival. Spent some time reflecting here then grabbed the required photo. Thanks

Seeing as though we were on a tour, I chose to go the photo option. But WOW where do you do it? So, this was my version. My second time visiting this establishment and it did not disappoint. I think I may even be back for a third go.

Its going to be a big week at the Canberra GeoBash. After a tour through Parliament House earlier today, we then headed to the Australian War Memorial for another tour. I will definitely have to revisit here, so much information, so many displays and at times very emotional. After doing the tour LB and I stayed for the last post and laid a wreath for those that paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. All caches found before our tour were signed AWM1.TFTC Aquilus1Keep smiling ??

Caching our way around Canberra taking in the sights with 2beez and attending Mega. Today we attended a tour of the War Memorial with the geocaching group. We visited this spot beforehand and it was interesting to hear more information afterwards. This spot, as sad as it is, is always a favourite to visit. Thanks Aquilus1 for creating for us all to enjoy. A FP for sure. ...................................................Nominations for the **2023 Victorian Cache of the Year Awards** are now open and will close on **17 April 2024**. Day 16 were now chasing caches around Canberra for the Easter 2024 Geobash, last time I was in Canberra was 1986 so a lot had changed. This place most of all. The inner sanctum here was a lovely place to sit and honour those gone and I really enjoyed reading the meaning behind the columns and mosaics. Got beautiful reflections in the pool, hence its name. Thanks Aquilus1 for placing this here, contributing to this great game for myself and others to enjoy.

Day 2 of my magnificent mega caching experience in Canberra and surrounds.Today I C Nothing, meme28, geotrakka, Burns345, neva2old & I (signing as WA6) focussed more on the central Canberra area with a couple of tours booked at Parliament House & the Australian War Memorial, was fantastic to see these places and meet caches from all over the place too.The evening was spent on another mega tour at Mt Stranger.Once again a great variety of cache types and containers were located and with a large group the competition to get hands on the log first was high, with plenty of laughs along the way too. Thanks Aquilus1 for placing Australian War Memorial for me and others to find.I added my name to the log at 12:29 on 28/3/2024.This is find number 8379 for me.

Came into the war memorial to do the AL waypoints and got the virtual while we were here. The eternal flame was giving off a lot of heat as we stood here. A very somber place but we were interrupted by drilling works. Here is the photo for irondale and I TFTC

Found on the AWM tour with GLISS during the Canberra OzMega.

It was easy to get an appointment to go into the memorial which was super cool. Without this virtual, I would not have done so. And what do you know - I think this CO is fabulous!! Awarding a favorite point. Thank you for the smiley and the fun!The day:Today I continued my month long journey from the U.S. along the east coast of Australia!! I was on my way to Canberra for the GeoBash mega and reuniting with the Aussie friends I left behind when I left Adelaide almost a month ago. I had a a shorter list than usual in hopes of getting to Canberra by early afternoon. I think I found all that I sought, but either way, it was a successful run north. Many thanks to all the geocachers who placed and continue to maintain their geocaches for folks like me to find. I know it's not always easy, but know that I appreciate you.
