Boston, Massachusetts

After lots of lots of Internet research, we identified four different locations in Boston, Massachusetts where these tiles claimed to have been found by non-geocachers. As part of a series of Metro Boston locationless caching trips this past week, we visited each of those locations and found -- nothing!
1 - Corner of Tremont and Temple
2 - Corner of Berkeley and St. James
3 - Corner of Kingston and Essex
4 - Charles Street at Crosswalk between Boston Common and Public Garden
I wanted to post a "Did Not Find" log for this cache just to document our lack of success, but there is no such log type for locationless caches! Simply treat this note as a "Did Not Find!"

We started looking for these signs in Washington, DC during the Summer. Found the one near the Navy/Archives Metro station (7th Street and Indiana Avenue NW) but found it already claimed. Then we found one at 13th and L Streets, although it was partly covered. We’re catching up on digitizing film pictures to post before the locationless caches go away in a few days. We found a Web site that lists the location of many of these signs, and last week did a survey of all the listed locations on 13th, 14th, and 15th Streets in DC. We’re sorry to report that the one near the Archives building is the only one remaining in good condition. The one at 13th and L has been mostly paved over, and only some small remains of the white in the sign can be seen. It's like it melted into the asphalt when it was resurfaced. I guess that's from being heated and rolled.

The signs at 13th and E, G, and K; at 14th and F, K, and L; and at 15th and Pennsylvania Ave. and E and I Streets are all gone – either paved over or in one or two cases, with a layer of pavement missing. Pictures show the one at 13th and L last Summer, what remains of it now, the current state of the one near the Archives (not much changed from when cacheKidds found it in June 2004), and the condition of one of the other intersections.

Found this on the way from SEPAG's Center City Lunch to the new Paper Cache. Schmoe stopped traffic (he used to be a cop so he knows how to do this) so I could take the perfect picture. Thanks!

An update on the Indianapolis Toynbee tile that was logged 0n 10/2/2002, FTF actually. This tile has been almost covered by road-cut work this past week. Maybe the last half will be left alone, but I wouldn't count on it. This might be gone in another week from looking at the construction layout.

Found this Toynbee tile not far from a previous one I found. This one is located in the crosswalk on the Northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Chestnut Street in Chicago, Illinois. This corner sees lots of traffic especially the 2 legged kind. It was difficult to get the picture without getting trampled on. I know there are several others along Michigan Avenue but this is only the second one I could find. Perhaps another day.

Found this Toynbee tile on the Southwest corner of Delaware and Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. These roads see a lot of traffic so I was kind of surprised that the tile was not paved over. TFTC.

Here is another survivor in Washington DC. There's a great story with this one! We were on our way to visit the White House when we had gotten evacuated. Marine One had landed rather quickly on the lawn and took off just as quickly, secret service, fbi and every cop in the DC area showed up in about one minute flat. They had men with machine guns, bomb sniffing dogs, police tape. We knew we were in trouble when we got close to the White House and the guard told us we were going to have to leave because I quote: "We have a little situation here." They escorted the entire crowd to 1400 and he lives on 1600 Pennsylvania. (Mind you that this was the day before they evacauted us from the Capitol too!) I was so awestruck by what had just happend and was looking around to try to make sense of what was going on when I saw it at the intersection. I would imagine that this is as close as they'd be allowed to get to the White House. Living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin I had heard of these things, but we'd never been in a city diverse enough to have these. I had to explain to Mr. Black Bug that it was considered a bus stop of sorts. Although when we go to Chicago for the weekend in July, I'm sure we'll see more of them. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled!

A few months ago, I accompanied odragon on his quest to log this cache on an on ramp in Philadelphia. I thought he was slightly crazy, getting out of the car in the pouring rain late at night to run off down the road, dodging what few cars there were to snap a photo. Little did I know...

On Saturday, all of team mccambjd were down in Delaware furniture shopping. On the way home, we hit a horrendous traffic jam. As we moved north at 5 km/h I happened to glance down at the roadway for a second and thought: "hey, that looks like a Toynbee!" I didn't pull the car over and force my family out at that moment, but I stored the idea in my mind to come back and confirm.

After everyone fell asleep tonight (they were all tuckered out after celebrating my paternal abilities), I snuck out and down the highway. I had the emergency blinkers on as I trolled the breakdown lane at a crawl for two km or so. And there it was! As cars roared by, I tried to take a snapshot out the window of the car. They turned out, but not too well, so I hopped out during a lull and snapped a decent shot or two. TFTC!!

Chicago, Il.
Jackson and Michigan Ave.
NW Corner in crosswalk.
Actually found this a few weeks ago and kept meaning to chekc if it were logged. I figured since there were only 5 or 6 in the Chicago area, it would be a fair bet that it was taken. Surprise, i checked over the weekend and it was clean to go. Went and grabbed another picture on my way to work this morning.
