#23184 @1810Day 7 of a 9 day trip: Drive from Canberra to Melbourne, then by air to Flinders Island, Launceston, King Island, and back to Melbourne, then drive back home to Canberra. For the King Island part of the trip, I joined Aquilus1 and sacada. We arrived on King Island in steady heavy rain. Today, we visited the northern and eastern caches. It was very wet and windy here today. And the tide was out, so there was minimal activity at the blow hole. Photos taken. Answers submitted by Aquilus1. TFTC.
I do love a good earthcache, they take you to some great spots. This one was fabulous, and made all the better by the weather we had. It was blowing a howling wind, which meant huges waves constantly crashing against the rocks as well as blowhole jets. We got as close as we could, hopefully close enough that my answers are correct. The bleak day really highlighted the ruggedness and remoteness of this location. Fave point
Off to Tasmania to get Flinders Island LGA and finally the last LGA for AU at King Island. TFTC.Today is the day to get the last LGA in Australia that has a cache. It's been a long trip.A few caches around Launceston and then a flight to King Island, our last LGA.King Island is wet... very wet. It continued to rain and then the wind picked up. Heavy rain and strong winds drenched us for hours. Even managed to get bogged for a while. Still we cached on. What a great day. Now to dry off a bit.Place was very windy and rainy. Was nearly blowing us off the ground.
There had been discussion which way the weather was blowing from, yes, from the east. Yes, it blew in hard and wild in all its glory onto us. If I had a dry spot left this was the defining moment where my raincoat met its maximum water rating! What a great coastline and perfect weather to see it blow, although with the low tide it just didn't quite get there. It's been quite a journey, just to get to King, yes, but the many years of trips and travel in the quest to find every cachable LGA in Australia. So, here we are, on King, our last, all found and now sacada, Tikva and myself are spending our time exploring the island and its caches. The weather hasn't shown its gentle side. Instead, we have had wild wet and windy weather. Apt perhaps, that this journey ends memorable, and gives us a little taste of the roaring 40s and bass straight life. A reminder of the islands history, often tragic, so a little wind and rain as we explored, quite mild in the scheme of so much hardship of the past. So, we carried on, as you can only do and found amusement and fun in the craziness of it all. The second day was much more pleasant, a light drizzle later on, and the wind still but compared to the previous day. Quite nice! Scenic, rugged, and wild coastlines, grassy lush fields, and cows lined up in rows to protect from the weather. Wallabies in numbers so high, just lining the roads, it makes you wonder how many there are we can't see. Wild peacocks, turkeys, and pheasants are often seen as well. With our caching complete early on the second day, a little fun. King island dairy for tastings and a little shopping! Very yummy and great prices, too. The KI brewery was next on our list where we had some tastings and a cheese platter to enjoy too.We finished the last day with an event, a celebration to reflect on being the first two to have all cachable LGAs completed, great to share this with milestone with sacada , and great TikvaNZ was there with us. Now the question is, what next? Thanks for your cache!
We hung around long enough to see some small blowhole action. Have sent answers to membsec. Thanks for the interesting cache.
Today we were tourists as well as cachers and did this cache while travelling the island with goingplaces2. Made some observations here and hurried back to the car to get out of the rain. Joint answers sent. TFTC.
We flew over to King Island with ilookgeo and spent the day doing a combination of tourist things and geocaching. This was one of the caches we did. We took in the view from here on a rather windy and dismal day. The local guy who was fishing in this area has lived there for 45 years and said he had only seen the blowhole blow properly once, so we didn't really hold any hope. Thanks go to membsec for creating this cache.
Great to be here today. this spot is beautiful and very interesting look at the little blowhole I have some big ones and I’ll seen the small ones but this is the prettiest
The wife and I came to King Island for our 15 year wedding anniversary. Caching was just the ticket to see what the island has to offer. A beautiful spot. Have emailed the answers. TFTC.
What a beaut location this is!
We’re currently on holidays and are enjoying exploring the island as much as we can.
Unfortunately the blow hole wasn’t ‘working’ due to very calm weather.
At GZ there was a lot of study and debate while gathering our answers. All good fun.
Our answers were sent and we’re now logging with CO’s permission.
Thanks membsec for this beaut earthcache. It was really interesting.

For our first two days on King Island, westerly winds prevailed. However the wind direction changed overnight and when we visited this location this morning, there was a very strong wind blowing from the south east. The waves were crashing in but probably not at quite the right angle to create a good show from the blow hole. However we saw evidence that it could be a spectacular event when the conditions were right.
The geology of the area was very interesting and the questions for the earthcache took us through an structured analysis. Answers to the questions have been forwarded to the COs. Thanks membsec of a very interesting earthcache in a great location. Thanks for bringing us to the King Island Blow Hole. Three photos have been added to our log.

TaurusSix and I had another opportunity to visit this location. The conditions could not have been much different. A gently breeze. Low tide. Small waves. Dry rocks. And no activity from the blowhole itself.
I spent some time exploring and pondering the task at hand, and have sent my thoughts separately.

TaurusSix and I came to see the blowhole and gather the required info for this cache. We achieved the first part, got to GZ, but could not safely complete the task.
The wind was strong, bitterly cold, and on-shore. The tide was nearing high. Together this meant large waves crashing onto the rocks and sending sea spray all over us (and my new camera). On the positive side the blowhole was in action.
I tried to get the info, but I didn't want hypothermia, nor get washed off the rocks by a freak wave, so we walked away, satisfied that we'd had a fantastic experience.

I was surprised a few hundred metres from GZ to encounter a copper in a police ute and from the fresh footprints at GZ I wonder if he was a geocacher [?]
No blowing of the hole today but I enjoyed the geology of the site

We had an amazing drive to this location today. Unfortunately at low tide so not much action in the blowholes today.
A great spot for an earth cache. Thanks so much for the lesson on this local feature.
King island really is a gem of a place to visit. We had the beach to ourselves today.
Happy new year.
