Have driven passed here many a times but never stopped very interesting to learn the how's and whys thankyou.
Found on the way back home....taking the scenic route..... from Gridges CITO in the Mount today. I had got this ones info last year but had forgotten to claim it, but because I couldn't find the answers, revisited today. There are so many of these holes in the paddocks around the area. TFTEC Freddo. Will send my answers through asap.
We are travelling with richlink on our Annual Caravan Geocaching trip, using geocaching as our guide. We are in Beautiful Mt Gambier for a few days, soaking up the amazing things this area has to offer. We especially love the bush, back roads, and the wild southern seas. TFTC LNCU.Th answers have been lodged.
Travelling with iluvtrekking from our home state of WA on. SA caching foray. Staying in Mount Gambier for a week to grab some of the local hides. Its been sixteen years since since we were last here so enjoying the re-visit. Thanks for the EC Fredd0LNCU
**Today:**Found with DSDMy first ever day in South Australia Woke up in Mount Gambier today with no real destination, but a big list of caches! Ended up just up the road in Millicent, but still several hundred kilometres travelled as we detoured down to the coast! The biggest goal of today, and the entire trip, was finishing my AUSMER! We found not only one, but two caches in my final month I needed! Its been a multi-year challenging journey, so good for it to be finished! ---**This Cache:**Ive found plenty of ECs at quarrys, but this one was certainly a bit different! Dont think I have found one like this, with specifically cut blocks! An interesting spot to stop at an learn a few thingsTFTC, answers submitted & approved
Wow something so cool that hundreds of people a day drive past without even looking at interesting spot. Answers to the CO. Thanks for bringing me to this location.

I have sent the answers on behalf of our group.
Today there were two cars of geobuddies travelling around this area collecting a variety of caches based on age, type and favourites. It was an incredibly successful day and thanks must go to all COs for placing such interesting and sometimes challenging caches. This was one of the caches we found and all were signed either as MAFSS or FAMSS , as the group consisted of minniek, Albida33 Fitzy_1965, Sol de Lune and myself Smittengranny.

Day 7 of our loop through Vic and SA then home.
Today was our first day caching with albida, Sol de lune & smittengranny. We signed as MAFSS to save room. Some of us may have rebelled and signed FAMSS instead. It was a bit dreary and windy but we didn’t get too wet.
The aim was to collect a couple of counties, old caches to finish my Ausmer calendar, and just to have fun.
All caches were found quickly and easily unless otherwise mentioned.
Fascinating place to stop for an earthcache. Logging with permission.

30,538. Found with minniek, albida33, Sol de lune, smittengranny (signing either as FAMSS or MAFSS to save room and just for fun). After the hordes around Rutherglen it was good to drop down to a group of 5.
Rutherglen Mega and South Australia Trip Day 7. Today we had a full day to explore around the Mt Gambier region, with a few older caches targeted plus many others on our list. We started heading along the south coast which was spectacular to see. This was an interesting location. A fun place for an Earthcache. Info gathered and sent to the CO.
Thanks GeoVenture2020 !!

Southern Autumn adventure Day 8. Post Mega South East SA trip Day 2. After a driving day yesterday to wrap up the mega weekend, today was a trip from Mount Gambier down to the southern coast line with Sol de Lune, Smitten Granny, Fitzy_1965, MinnieK and me (albida33). F.A.M.S.S was the initial in the logs today. Our goal in this region was to visit the two old caches out this way and a few others that are nearly as old. We also managed about ten Earth caches and even went for a walk or two. We ended the day with caching and LABs around Mount Gambier before retiring for a home cooked meal at the caravan park.
As we headed back toward Mount Gambier we found a few great places to stop. The remains were quite impressive,I am sure the works were very productive. Our answers have been sent in for the team by Smitten Granny.

Headed to Mount Gambier after the Rutherglen Mega with fitzy_1965, Albida33, Minniek, and Smittengranny. We signed all logs as FAMSS.
We targeted a few older caches, a few multi's, a few puzzles always as well as a couple of earthcaches.......and really anything else we had time for.
This was another interesting earthcache which taught us something about the area. Another earthcache that was certainly worth the stop. Answers have been sent to the CO.
Thanks for the earthcache GV2020...fav point added.

GT37 and I both wondered what these great big cow swimming pools were as we were driving along. Almost forgot to look if there was a cache, which there was and one that helped answer our questions. Thanks for the lesson with this cache.
I must say that I enjoyed this cache as we were wondering what we were looking at as we approached. Very interesting. Thanks for placing this cache here and an explanation.
Was worth a quick stop here to see the quarries.
Funny how they look just like an above ground pools.
Thanks for all the info and directing us to stop here!

An easy earthcache for Owl whose grandfather used to work in one of these places. (Giving a chance for more of the endless family history both Owl and JJ were throwing the Fish's way.)
The second full day in Mt Gambier with Doctor Owl and sushilord. We picked up Bowerbird and headed out for some breakfast before what turned out to be quite a long road trip visiting Port MacDonnell, Kongorong, Tantanoola and then decided on the spur of the moment to go and find the Virtual cache in Dartmoor. A fun day with lots of caches and some pretty cool locations which Bowerbird thoroughly enjoyed. [^]
And another Earthcache that we just happened to be passing. Answers sent and approval to log received promptly.

We came along with ilook4geo and stopped at this quarry to have a look. Decided on the answers to the questions and sent these to the CO. Thank go to GeoVenture for creating this earthcache whick was an enjoyable one to do.
Did this earthcache along with goingplaces2 and sent answes to the CO who appproved them so we can log the find. Thanks to GeoVenture2020 for showing us something that we would probaly have just driven straight by, except for this earthcache.
Came to source some bricks, but couldn’t reach them.

The great Geoventure 2020 tour....take 2...which is of course now in 2021 Once again it myself and AnyMules doing things that not many sane people would attempt. [:o)]
Day 10: Woo Hoo another sunny day so it was off into the forests following the unfound boxes. Some rather fantastic locations hidden away in them there forests
* If anything was particularly interesting then there will be a comment
Here.. This earthcache seems so familiar to me. [?]
otherwise we found all the caches we looked for and they were in good condition.
Only one of the three goals from last year achieved. So once again trying and fill my calendar with multi-caches and complete loop 11 again this year. [^] For my third goal I will try and get my DNF numbers from over fifty to single digits. That should keep me busy again this year! [:o)]
***Thanks fredd0 for putting out this cache and maintaining it for our enjoyment. ***

Thanks for an interesting earthcache. Answers sent to the cache owner.
Very interesting location here
Day 3 of the Millicent mega, we headed out to do some caching between Millicent and the Mount before heading north and completing the AooA series and a few others in the area. We soon headed to Penola for my celebration event followed by the near by CITO. After some tourist stuff back at the mount we detoured via a few caches before reaching the accommodation for the evening and getting a flat tyre.

This is just 3ks down the road from me so how wonderful it is to now know the history behind it.
Answers sent to CO, was a while ago when I was here but just got around to logging it.
Down this way again with Purrfect Di, Jack, Sebastbat and found an earthcache that looked familiar!
Yes we even met the CO here in passing on the not quite geoventure last year.
(we'll have another go this october too!)
As the last folks said, it's easy to get the ferryman song stuck in your head... don't pay the quarryman...
and maybe that's why they changed their name. Or not
Family legend has it that our Great Great Grandparents settled for a farming life in nearby Sutton Town back in the mid 1800s, only to find this white stuff under their soil. They then become quarrymen too, and built a few things, including the little church on Suttontown Road. Always nice to find a cache with a (loose) family connection, so it gets a fav point for that - and for not being a mint tin [:o)]
Much thanks to fredd0 for presenting this earthcache for our enjoyment and education.

This cache was found using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S20+, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or sometimes with just plain old dumb luck!
---
Stay safe when caching. Watch for snakes, random cliffs, wild goats, and lightning,
but especially lookout for bugs. [xx(]
Make sure Travel Bugs are the only ones you share and pass on
2020 turned into 2020won, and 2020too is on the way! 2020free should see us through
Still important to observe social distancing when possible, (150 nano caches apart should do it)
Still important to wash your hands (always has been really [:o)]
Still very important to look after each other and take precautions & get checked out for even the tiniest sniffle or cough, or unexpected headache! [8)] [B)]
Still even more important to get some fresh air and exercise while we can, so get out and cache the country!
Thanks to all those placing caches out and about away from the city crowds,
keeps our game safe and interesting
Had Don’t Pay the Ferryman in my head for the drive here. Interesting spot. TFTC answers to follow
So we did it, we took the plunge and early last year made arrangements to sell our little hobby farm in South Gippsland and ‘do a big lap’.
No full lap is complete without a lap of the little island first.
So after tidying up our affairs and putting everything into storage, we celebrated Christmas with our families and hit the road.
We just spent 7 magnificent weeks in Tasmania now are cutting through boring old Victoria making our way to South Australia, crossing our fingers Covid doesn’t strike again before we cross the border
Thanks for being one of the CO’s who supplied us with a cache to do on the way.
This one was most enjoyable
A long weekend away with sir_spectre. Lots of 4WDing and for me getting those caches that I had been hoping to get to one day. This one didn't take long to get the required answers.

found with mogni. The target this australia day long weekend was 3 island caches, ladder entry in to a cave, a few tree/structure climbs, finishing and mogni's tradition fizzy grids, driving for 10's of km's along the coast line at various spots ( longest stretch was over 30 km's ) and a multi on a calendar day for me plus a puzzle and multi on calendar days for mogni.

We have escaped Victoria and are on a 3week holiday in SA and are enjoying the much freer life compared to Victoria, in these covid times.
We spent almost 2weeks in Adelaide and now are spending 5 nights at Mt Gambier (so we can checkout our favourite areas of Port McDonnell, Southend and Beachport), followed by 2 nights in Portland, and then back home. (this is to replace our original holiday to SA for Easter last year which was cancelled due covid and would have included the Geoventure 2020 Millicent mega.. oh well).
We've been to Mt Gambier before many times but mostly prior to caching which we started in 2016.
The place where we are staying conveniently has a nearby wall of blocks of this material which made it easy for us to get the dimensions! Is that cheating lolz? I must admit limestone blocks aren't as pretty as the sandstone blocks you see elsewhere in SA. Limestone blocks remind me of those besser cement blocks that were popular in the 70s... something you don't see much these days.
Thanks for the EC GeoVenture2020/freddo and bringing us to this interesting spot which we would have missed without this EC but having noted this one, we then noticed another couple of them while on our explorations today.
In the vicinty I noted a big kids sandpit (or is the correct term lime pit) . See photo.

While I found the various sections of the quarry fascinating, I was rather uncertain of my answers. I remember that we had a shed built of this stone in Melbourne almost 70 years ago and was fascinated by how soft it was Thanks for highlighting this local industry GeoVenture2020
We are heading across to Adelaide for a few days picking up a few labs along the way as with all the crowds around this is the easiest form of caching but in the quieter areas we will grab what pops up.
We found this site extremely interesting and we believe that it is the first such site that we have seen close up. We roamed from site to site trying to imagine how it all worked and then got down to answering the questions which we have sent off to the CO and hope that they are good enough for this log to remain.
Many thanks GeoVenture2020 for bringing us here, a favourite point from us.

I am spending the long weekend down on the limestone coast ahead of the Millicent Celebration event.
I left Millicent early in the morning and headed to Mount Gambier before heading down to Port MacDonnell. I was targeting Earthcaches, solved mysteries, high terrain, high difficulty and a couple of old caches.
A really interesting location. I had never really thought about how this stuff was quarried - now I know.
Thanks for the lesson and the cache GeoVenture2020.

Our second earthcache find for the day. So interesting to see these quarries dotted around the place....mind you when you see so many houses built of the stone it’s not that surprising.

Visited the Quarryman Earthcache to do the research during a recent trip to South-eastern South Australia and western Victoria. Answers sent to the CO. Thanks for an interesting Earthcache Freddo!
I visited this cache with FeatherWaite on day 3 of a caching trip from Adelaide to south-western Victoria/south-eastern South Australia.
After a warm, but reasonable morning, the weather turned nasty with very hot and windy conditions until a cooler change very late in the afternoon. With fire and travel warnings also being received via automated SMS’, we had to alter our plans and were not able to visit a number of the caches that we had initially targeted. Nevertheless, we did manage to find a selection of traditional, multi, virtual, unknown and earthcaches.
Initially we looked at the wrong hole in the ground and wondered how we would accurately estimate the various dimensions. Then we saw what we should have been looking at! It had me noticing all those stone buildings in the nearby towns afterwards.
Thanks Freddo for another interesting earthcache.

The third voyage in the new camper, staying at Port Macdonnell for the intervening days. Little bit of relaxing, little bit of touristy stuff, little bit of scuba for Mr Morris and some caching.
Today we thought we would head to Kalangadoo and complete as much of the wine glass and bottle as we could. We swapped things around with Mr Morris on navigation and Lady Morris driving. We managed to finish it and still had some energy left for a few on the way home. Answers will be on their way shortly.
Thanks for contributing to a great weeks holiday Freddo

#1684 Day 3 of the Great Vic Bike Ride (Millicent to Mt Gambier - 88km) Our route took us past these quarries and I decided another break was called for to stop and do this cache. Answers have been sent to CO for approving (and very quickly approved - I am getting around to logging this in Jan 2020. TFTC Prof Freddo, it was good to learn the significance of these holes in the ground as we passed through.
This cache was found today and brings our overall cache find tally to 10319.
So many earthcaches along this road today and not enough hours in the day. The three quarries nearby must have generated a lot of stone for local buildings. Our answers have been sent via the message centre.
Thanks Prof Freddo for the cache.

Today was spent with a variety of adventures, such as cave diving, dry caving, and cycling the Mount Gambier Rail Trail. We first dived/snorkeled Piccaninnie Ponds early, and then after sightseeing Hells Hole, we drove to Gouldens Sinkhole for the new EarthCache that was just published for FTF. After an enjoyable late breakfast, we then caved at Morgan's Cave, and just as the storm clouds were gathering, we packed the car with our bikes to ride the trails through Mount Gambier. It's not often that I'm down here with bikes, and so despite the storm clouds brewing, I was determined to conduct the ride with jesswrigley to see some of the sculptures installed along, as well as find the various geocaches. We collected most of the geocaches along there, and we rounded out the day with a few new EarthCache FTFs, and then after dinner, feeding the possum colony at Umpherston Sinkhole.
I had driven past these quarries so many times in recent years, and had always postulated what they were. I thought they may have been dams to hold water for the farmers, possible quarries, or even borrow pits for road construction. Most were long and not really deep, but I had never seen these quarries with clear saw marks and steps, so that was really cool. Like with every geocache "in plain sight", I am more than happy to give this one a Favourite Point for allowing me to stop and pay attention to the environment. Very interesting, with the added quirkiness of a Freddo joke to this geocache's name and waypoints. Admittedly, we hadn't heard of the Quarrymen until jesswrigley googled them. Cheers Professor Freddo.
