Found by The Empire + HThe morning after the Warrnambool running festival, we set off on a longer journey, driving from Warrnambool to Murray Bridge. Our route takes us through the quiet, scenic roads of western Victoria, offering us a peaceful escape as we begin our journey. Next, the landscape shifts as we enter the renowned Coonawarra wine region. The neat rows of vineyards stretch out on either side of the road, their perfectly ordered lines a stark contrast to the wilder, open countryside we passed earlier. Known for its world-class red wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, the region feels alive with rich history and flavors. Although we don't have time to stop for a tasting, the sight of the vineyards and cellar doors along the way adds a touch of luxury to the drive. Being in the Coonawarra gave me a chance to get down and dirty with what lues beneath our feet. The cross section here gives an appreciation of the tenuous and thin layer of soil that gives this wine growing area its reputation.Answers submitted and approved. Cheers.A favourite point

On our way into deepest darkest South Australia to help celebrate a birthday and catch up with long lost friends we came across this magnificent feature. As we travel around finding caches do we really think what is below the surface and how it became the way it is.
Thank you for helping us to look at our earth in a more in-depth way.
Our answers have been sent to the CO. Thank you for the earthcache.

I have been Geocaching for the last year as part of team Dromaniax. We have enjoyed the Geocaching caching around a lot of Victoria in that time. From our first trip up to the Murray River, the next trip to Lake Eildon and the area around Buxton, an epic trip to the Little Desert to attack the This is SA series, then a great trip with our father to the High Country in Victoria, a trip to the Mornington Peninsula and a trip to the Albury-Hume Reservoir area.

I finally decided to set up my own account and am claiming all the caches I have found as part of Dromaniax.

Thank you for this Earthcache GeoVenture2020

Plans had been made for a weekend away to find the This is SA series of caches in Little Desert. We had planned that AusFox;, Sims_family and my muggle brother. Unfortunately for AusFox;, caught the dreaded Vids and wasn't up to the weekend. So my muggle brother and I headed off for a long weekend of camping and caching.

The muggle brother loves Earthcaches, and so we stop to find as many as we can along the way.

Once we had pulled over, we checked out this old quarry and think that the new use is far more fun. Gotta love SA reds.

Thank you, GeoVenture2020 (fredd0), for this Earthcache and the time and effort put into creating and maintaining it.

Logging with permission

So we did it, we took the plunge and early last year made arrangements to sell our little hobby farm in South Gippsland and ‘do a big lap’.
No full lap is complete without a lap of the little island first.
So after tidying up our affairs and putting everything into storage, we celebrated Christmas with our families and hit the road.

We recently spent 7 magnificent weeks in beautiful Tasmania, then we just did a quick trip down the west coast of boring old Victoria, making our way to South Australia, crossing the border before Covid strikes again.
Looking forward to slowing things down as we spend time in SA with no return date planned.
Thanks for being one of the CO’s who supplied us with a cache to do on the way.
This one was most enjoyable.

This is our last day in South Australia as our impropmtu holiday must come to an end and we are heading to Mount Gambier to do the lab adventures there and picking up any that pop up on the screen.

What an interesting location this turned out to be, one we would have only driven passed and possibly would have only had a quick glance if it wasn't for this earth cache. We enjoyed trying to work out the answers here and admit we came up with a few scenarios but hopefully the answers we sent off to the CO will be good enough for this log to remain, if not we will happily delete it.

Many thanks GeoVenture2020 for another lesson in earth science at a unusual location.

Had heard about this place, but didn't know its location - until now Cool.
An interesting idea, but it doesn't look like it's generally open to the public Sad. Info about the business (and a nice little video) can be found here: https://www.cwwines.com/ [^].
Took photos. Left footprints. Submitted answers.
Thanks for another one GeoVenture2020.

This weekend, jesswrigley and I headed to the limestone coast / south-east for some sightseeing, mountain biking, and sinkhole diving. On Friday night, we stayed at Robe, seeing the famous obelisk the following morning. We then drove through Little Dip Conservation Park to Beachport, then Rendelsham, Hatherleigh, and staying in Millicent. On Sunday, we checked out Tantanoola and the Tantanoola Caves, mountain biked through Mount Gambier Forest and Browns Lake area, and finally on Monday, we dived Kilsby Sinkhole before driving back Telford Scrub Conservation Reserve and Penola. A great long weekend of sunny weather.

Today, jesswrigley and I started the day with a Mount Gambier breakfast event, as well as finding a few FTFs. We then experienced scuba diving Kilsby Sinkhole, and then started driving north back home. We stopped off at Telford Scrub Conservation Reserve, mountain biking a few of the replaced caches and those that I didn't find during the last visit. We also stopped off at Penola for that Adventure Lab, as well as a few stops within the Coonawarra area.

A pretty cool area. It was impressive to see the storage and operation of the winery here - I wonder why this old quarry was chosen to setup shop? Could it be due to the quality of the grapes stored more cool in the subterranean, or possibly so the area didn't have an eyesore of all these tanks? We studied the quarry walls, and soon had assembled some answers. It's great that the same old geology can have different lessons to be learned. Thanks GeoVenture2020 committee for the EarthCache placement.

An impressive sight especially with all those shiny wine tanks. It's nice to think that all the richness that is hitting one's eye can be tasted in a year or three... Drove past this on trip back from Millicent LWE.

Wow what an interesting location despite the earth cache info. Answers collected.

Today I started out at cockatoo lake after camping there for the evening before making my way to Mt gambier today cleaning up as many caches as I could along the way. A solid day with the weather in mint condition which is unusual for the south east. 85 finds for the day and 5 labs.

Thanks for the cache

Another enjoyable day caching with Nicko57 around Penola, Coonawarra and Bool Lagoon.

So many unfamiliar terms in geology and so much to learn.
This is my favourite quarry of all time....I’d be happy to live there...just as long as I had a wine glass with me

Thanks for showing us this area and the earthcache Freddo

On the way back from a few days caching around Mount Gambier.
I think this maybe my first Earthcache visual from the geomobile.

So the geohusband finally has a day off work today so after a leisurely morning we headed out to collect a few caches in the Coonawarra. I’d brought him and the ladder so we could tackle a high terrain cache. We also collected the info on another multi so I can race back and sign it tomorrow before work. So happy to have all these new multis close to Naracoorte!
Lovely arvo we collected 6 finds and enjoyed our rural drive.
We both found this one super interesting and had quite a debate over the answers (to be sent). Husband found the location for the winery equipment (as a former winery man) to also be of interest.
TFTC!

Trying to keep out of trouble and its certainly quiet out this way. Staying at a camp south of Penola, no one much around anywhere which is good for our social separation. Nice earth cache, wow that was a lot of wine being stored there. Answers to be sent to co shortly. Fav point alloc. Our thanks to Freddo for arranging this cache and adding to our enjoyment of the area.

Sir_spectre and I wanted one more trip down to the south east before the Mega arrived and this was a great opportunity to find some geocaching artwork as well as get some of the higher terrain that have been published. An event was a bonus we were not expecting to get to but the caching gods allowed us to get there.
Thanks to Freddo from mogni Big Grin

09-Mar-20
I am liking all the new earth caches published for the mega and detouring to them as much as possible when heading down to mount gambier or on the return. answers sent my mogni
Back down to Mount Gambier with Mogni. She wanted to do mainteneance on some of her caches. Day 3 saw us slowly returning back to adelaide. After taking the coastal road down we took the inland road back. I think i finally have a almost ( less than 5 caches ) clear road from mount gambier to adelaide now. Any containers that needed maintenance were fixed and any log books that needed replacing or that where almost full where replaced with the mega coming. Also any small container had extra scroll placed in it for the coming mega in 4 weeks.

Find # 8916

The long weekend planned to cache around Millicent with sharkiefan.
I had left early and got a 1 night stay at Coonawarra. This gave me a few more hours to relax before hitting the main trails.

Things around here were unexpected to see. Normally Earth Caches dont have that many man made objects around them.
Still it was cool to see the cutting and how the earths layers can react with each other.

Catching up with the CO on Saturday night saved on the email and it was good to hear I had them right Smile

[FTF].
First to find on the 21st of January 2020 at about 1400
hours.
Got the okey dokey from the CO on our answers earlier today.
Mmmm just standing here makes us thirsty, that's a lot of fat space! What a big hole in the ground, good idea to keep things out of the wind. It must have been a big job cutting in like they have, we have passed this way often but never stopped to examine the ground, we have seen better but the view as seem to love it.
We see many horizons but usually the have sunsets, sunrises, boats or tall buildings on them, a new slant on horizons has been given.
Thanks for the earthcache Freddo, always broadening our minds.
