Interplanetary Cycle Trail: The Sun (Otago) Ranfurly, South Island, New Zealand

On arrival into Ranfurly we set up camp and proceeded to find the odd cache or two in the area, we could not locate this one as it appeared it had gone walkabout, so we notified the CO and he has given up permission to replace this one with the required code you will need .Thanks to the CO for the placement and the wonderful series.

With Easter weekend upon us we decided to take a quick trip to Otago so we could ride the rail trail bike track. This has been on our bucket list for years so we decided last week that we would pack up the campervan and come and do it.Yesterday I started in Alex and follow the rail trail to Clyde then bike the river trail back to Alex then onto Lauder.Today's plan was to start in Lauder and go to Ranfurly.Another planet cache found and another code I remembered to gather.Our last cache for today, now to the campervan to warm up and have a nice hot cup of tea.Thanks for making our day extra enjoyable with all of the caches you put our for us (and others) to find.Thanks for bringing me here and thanks for the smiley.

Was a pleasant but short visit to the Manintoto plains. I'll be back again.

Once again passing through back to Dunedin so I quickly stopped at the new toilets nearby for a break and quickly did this cache. TFTC

Staying in Ranfurly for 2 nights to play darts on Saturday, so once we had booked in to the motel, there was still time to go for a wander and find the bowling club where we were playing. (Note logging this at home on Sunday and our club lost the trophy this year..........) but we will back in 2 years time to finish these caches and hopefully retain the trophy. (They come to us next year).

Arrived in Ranfurly later this afternoon and decided to walk 1.5 kms or so along the rail trail to pick up a few caches. Managed to knock off four in the interplanetary series. Each was a reasonably quick find. This one makes you appreciate how large the sun is in relation to the various planets! #4943. TFTC.

A quick postprandial potter across the road. Why is it that muggles always manage to zoom past when you're head down backside up? TFTC. Might have to come back at some stage for the rest.

Staying at the NZMCA Park in town for a few days while exploring an area we've never been to before. Geopup Finn and I took a wander along the rail trail to find a couple of caches handy to town.

Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit … we are now parked up at Ranfurly for a couple of days, exploring in & around the local area … we went for a bit of a walk today and we thought it would be rude not to check out these caches on the way … found this with no issues, log completed & cache returned … pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally … TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #2,267 for us.

On a trip south from Tauranga. Nice to collect smiles along the way. Cycling the OTR. Apologies for some previous logs where I forgot to change my log template. Enjoying the fab scenery around these parts. Met up with Dee+ME to cycle with as our muggle hubbies we’re more interested in other things lol.


I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. Arrived here late morning, and it's very hot. A southerly front is due later today though so we're going to try to get as far down the trail as we can. There's definitely time to grab this one though, my last of the series. Just a shame the model of the sun isn't up to the same standards as the planets.

Needed to go and do some maintenance on Lomond Waltz in Naseby so decided to have bit of a raod trip and actully find a few caches (which we haven't done for a while). Just some easy park and grabs to get back into it. TFTC

New cache and logbook in place

Will be in the area on the 20th August to do maintenance.

Not up here much so decided to do this one despite it needing maintenance and get the number out of the log book for the final. As in previous log the logbook is soaking wet and I could not sign it. I have a photo if needed. TFTC.

Will sort out a new container in a couple of weeks. Will leave active for now in case you are looking for the number for the final.

Term 2 break. Planning for next term is done and it's time for a winter getaway before the third term begins. So it's off to Naseby we go to rekindle childhood memories of racing around the tailings but this time hunting for caches.

Walking back to the car after finding another cache and decided to drop in on this one. Container missing lid and half full of water. Log book soaked so couldn't sign. Emptied container and tuck under cover a little more. Posted a Needs Maintenance log too.

TFTC. Stayed in ranfurly last night and thought I would head out and grab a couple of caches today

Spotted the cache on approach. This is a great idea as I enjoyed the wherigo in Dunedin that showed the distances in a similar fashion. Cache wasn't in the best state with no lid and wet log. Went back to the car and emptied out a mint tin and placed that in the original container with new log to keep it ticking over in the meantime. TFTC # 17,184

Find after staying a few nights in Ranfurly. Log book was soaking wet but didn't have a spare. The log book was not in it's bag. Lot's of motorbikes on way to the Brass Monkey.

Hoping to cycle the Trail later in the year and this has certainly stimulated my interest !
I found a Multi on a walk with a similar theme in Washington DC some years ago (GC908D, Solar Sailing) which was also very interesting.
Addit - I picked up a GeoCoin and after I dropped it off (19/4/21) at GC90EDF I realised I had an incorrect code for it - so it hasn't logged as being moved on.
