Great Northern escape 2022 Day 78. Charters Towers Day 1. After a restless night and an early wake due to some very noisy birds, I headed off for a days caching. I finished the caches along the Gregory Highway and went out to the weir and threw in a few pirate caches as well. Apart from lots of grass and associated seeds, the day went smoothly and I was home in time for a late lunch and some logging.

The main effort was these roadside caches that all went smoothly today and were all in good condition. If I had any doubts about a location, the hint helped.

Thanks for the cache Phoenix Ferals

Tft$ Sadly, this cache container is broken and needs replacement. I have placed the log in a plastic bag to protect it.

26-Apr-22
The cache container is broken and the log container no longer has a lid. A replacement container is needed asap.
I have placed the log into a zip lock bag, but the mango is disintegrating fast.
Cheers.

We decided to start caching a little bit earlier than usual - best decision ever as it started showering later in the morning and then it just rained all afternoon.
We completed the tribe series as well as many other interesting caches north of Charters Towers.
Thanks to the CO's for placing these caches.

Out and about today caching along this road and finding a number of caches. The weather looks like it will rain later on, so we need to find them quickly. Found the cache and then moed onto the next one. TFTC

Day 11 of the long road trip from Western Australia to Townsville, Queensland.

Today was caching south of Charters Towers then north of the town where a first to find was jagged before returning and caching within Charters Towers. The second Adventure Lab and associated Bonus cache was also completed.

This cache was found without problems. Log signed and the cache returned as it was found.

Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for geocachers to find.

Having a great time making our way to the Townsville Mega with Team Crackers, Micaparamedic and Geoturtle37.
We have made it this far and have a couple of days up our sleeves so decided to set up camp for a couple of days and wash off some of the dust. It was an interesting sensation to not be rumbling along the road with the dust in our face, eyes . . . . .
I have no idea what is involved in mango farming but the thought of a pen pusher coming out here to make a go of farming is a little hard to grasp.
Thanks for placing the cache for us to find.

Catching up with some late logs.

We are heading up to the Townsville mega with micaparamedic, Geoturtle37 and Papi4506 chasing as many Adventure Labs that we can along the way.
This bought us to Charters Towers where we decided to camp for a couple of days and just do a bit of ;leisurely caching before the mega.

It must have been frustrating for the people trying to develop this area into a mango plantation with all the set backs after all the time and expense that they would have to have put into it. Another producing area would have been great as you can never get enough mangos.
Once we got to gz it didn't take too long before we found the only mango left on this road. although we couldn't eat it we did add our name to the log book.

To save room in the smaller logs we signed as "The Vics"

Many thanks Phoenix Ferals for the cache.

The containers in poor shape I did have an extra cling bag to put it inside but it does need maintenance before any heavy rain! I’m pleased to say there’s now another mango to be found at mango rd Smile

Didn’t see any mangoes until we found the cache, and we love mango. A nice straightforward find once we found the way across from the last cache.

After a great campfire meal last night at the van park we are staying at, and an even better nights sleep, we have set out to find the caches around the weir. Just a quick deviation at the local market where we picked up a homemade apple pie, fruitcake and some hedgehog and we were on our way. What a lovely community Charters Towers has, with some fantastic spots to visit and history to learn about.
We would like to thank all of the local CO’s for putting out all the caches we have found. We read only a few days ago that while the numbers of people who are geocaching is growing, the number hiding caches is actually falling. So as we regularly say, the CO’s are the most important part of the geocaching world. Without you we would have nothing. You have our sincere appreciation.

Just 17 finds today. We have almost come to the end of our stay in Charters Towers. Last night we had a great "catch up" with the locals. Today we thought it would be nice to attempt the local power trail and then head out to the weir. We got side tracked on our way back and logged a couple more. Big Grin

**Coordinate Accuracy:** We found this cache pretty close to where the GPS said he should be looking. Wink
**Cache Condition:** The cache camo is UV damaged and very brittle. It really should get some owner TLC.

Thanks for the hunt today,

Regards

Ian & Penny

Staying in Charters Towers so headed out to grab some caches in the area. Heading back to my accommodation I just had to detour to another cache or two and this was one of them.

I parked nearby and the cache was soon in hand.

Once the log was signed all was returned as found.

This is the most faded, broken mango container I have ever seen. Fortunately the log is safe from the weather. Great spot for a cache. Mangos rock.

Container broken. Lid was off second container and log was still in its bag but a little way away. Put log back in container and attached lid and put into outside container. Hopefully it will stay that way. Thanks

The road on which this cache is on certainly reminds me of my caching experience with the CO. It has been more off road than on so far but a far cry from wading out to a far flung lighthouse. Found the themed cache container in a work shirt similarly coloured. We could have been twins if the cache was a little more potato shaped. Nice start to your geocaching hiding. Thanks for the cache Phoenix Ferals. Nice FTF effort Hunter
