So many cachers have tried to keep caches alive on this bridge. It's time to allow someone else to try.
No cache container here today, though we did find where it probably was from a Velcro dot nice walk out
Cache replaced with a temporary container. My replacements still have not arrived, sadly.
oz_bean_counter I didn’t find your cache Ted Smout Memorial Bridge on 10/12/2022, 12:45 pm. All three caches on this bridge I couldn’t find. Maybe cache blindness or I need a better extraction tool.
Out on a maintenance run with Barb and decided to grab the ones on the bridge.
Cache number 2. Lucky we packed our extraction tools

I was with my friend and we were looking for it for about a minute and then she found the adorable cute rusty baby with wings container. Cheers for the stickers and rock (no more room on log to write name)
Easy find after locating the previous oz_bean_counter cache. I've run over 'Ted' before, and it's never fun. It always seems to be longer and nastier than it appears. TFTC
I need a few caches with the "Recommended at Night" attribute to qualify for a Challenge. So I planned an evening drive around the northern suburbs collecting these caches.
Bootcamp was tough this morning, so I was relishing the opportunity to loosen up some sore muscles with a nice evening walk on the bridge, collecting this one and the two a bit further on.
I had read some logs prior to my walk, and had managed to grab a nice stick before I got onto the bridge. Turns out I didn't need it here as I was able to slip the cache from its hole and sign the log. There was some excitement nearby with a large fish being landed, so thankfully the muggles ignored me whilst I made the find.
Thanks Oz Bean Counter

I eventually felt the cache....but couldn't retrieve it...until improvised with a few items I had with me to create some more reach...returned as found & T4TC
We went to the Peninsula before the rain sets in. It was about time to tackle the bridge caches.
As previous finders, it was hard to get the container out, but we managed it on our first visit.

Visited Redcliffe to try and get a few caches to fill my Friday Challenge and this one was on my list.
It was quickly found but I could not access the cache so I had to do the walk twice as I needed some TOTT so I could retrieve it. I had my finger on it but no good with the extra help. Someone though I needed the exercise and yes I do.
Signed the log and replaced as found. TFTC

Out with IolantheK for a longish "Houghton Highway" walk
Todays weather was blustery hold your hat windy day
Nice easy find, co-ords spot on and a cache in good condition, what more could you ask for [^]
My only problem is my fat fingers pushed the container beyond reach. How to get around this dilemma...what would MacGyver do? Two pens connected together pushed in from the otherside and voila the container reappeared [^]
Now for the next few Kms....

Came out last weekend for walk and found cache. Unfortunately could not retrieve it from its hiding spot as it was a bit tight and each attempt made it worse. However there was a pen there also so I tried to get that to use as a tool but that also gradually disappeared. So then both were out of site. I knew what I needed to do but didn't have the right equipment. Choosing not to be defeated by this I came back with what I needed this weekend. I retrieved the cache but I feel the pen may be lost forever. Sorry. I have put the cache back where I found it the first time but others beware this can be a bit tricky to get a grip on it. Good luck. I had fun. TFTC.
A easy find, nice walk, breezy but cool

We located the container and then I clumsily pushed it so far in that there was no way to extract it. Fortunately this process caused the pen that AndrewGills lost here a few days ago to appear and I could use that to poke the container back out again. Thanks, AndrewGills!

Cache container is difficult to retrieve. I lost a pen using it as a poker from the far side of the spot. Good thing I bought a whole packet of pens when I realised I’d forgotten one. Love walking across the bridge and by the water. TFTC
Muggle65 was set on walking to this one while l wanted to take the bikes. He won and then wished that he hadn't And l loved the walk so a win win really. Thank you so much for bringing us here
Out with for a couple of caches on a Friday. Nice walk, but I think we should’ve ridden a bike. Nevertheless we another D/T & possibly a challenge as well

Continuing our windy walk along the bridge, we were certainly holding our hats onto our heads.
We found this one well hidden and safe. We added our name to the log, and then decided to stop for a bit and look across the water to Brisbane port and also further north. What great views!

On the hunt this afternoon for a few caches below sea level for a nearby challenge cache. Found in good condition
Out for a bike ride this Australia Day morning with family, we stopped for a few caches. This was one we'[d driven past innumerable times, so it was lovely to finally be able to stop and collect it! It didn't make our job easy though - having determined where it had to be, we needed DisSister's TOTT and a bit of luck to actually extract it, as it had been placed very deeply in a spot not intended, as we also found its attachment point! Replaced as intended. TFTC, oz_bean_counter. =^.^=
This one sure took a bit of effort. Ended up requiring the use of my custom extender pokey stick thing in order to extract it from where it had been pushed away. We had found the original attachment point empty but persistence finally got us the cache. We have replaced it in it’s original position so it should be much easier for the next finder. TFTC oz_bean_counter
Found it. Only thing is it was pushed in further, trying to get it out. Have to light up to look down the barrel
Out and about on the scooters today travelling monster lane with swearah. After lunch nearby we headed to this one. I managed to pull up right by GZ and made a quick grab and return before any muggles came by our way. Tftc oz_bean_counter
Out on the scooters with jodsta83, we’d just been to Woody Point for a lovely lunch and made our way back across the bridge to find a few more.
Jodsta83 made a nice find here and while she was signing the log, I did some maths for the multi. Team Efficient!

Having spent two hours without a bite, on the Ted Smout fishing platform, we put a positive note on the morning out by finding our second cache of the day. The youngest was the one to spot the container and did the retrieval task. It was quite windy so the log signing was done quickly and the container replaced as found. All good with the log sheet here. Heading home with more bait than we arrived with thanks to the friendly fellow fishermen, so it was off to find fish and chips for lunch to wind up,the morning. I’m sure they won’t be busy. Numbers noted for the multi, that’s for another day.
Thanks for the cache ozbeancounter. Cheers

CITO finished - time for a bridge walk. As we intended to do just the Trad and Multi in the middle of the bridge, we elected to park Clontarf end and walk from there. Good idea, as the end of the Multi is closer too Clontarf.
It rained with extremely strong winds just as we approached GZ, so we hightailed it down to the fishing pontoon for some shelter.
Back up, we had fun trying to remove the cache from it's hide, as the previous finders had pushed it in just a tad too far for us. Hatzofff butchered the umbrella to poke it back out. Since repaired, of course.
Log signed and cache replaced as found at 2:27 PM on December 30, 2021. TFTC, oz_bean_counter

with RoddyC and grannysmith1947 after the CITO picking up some targeted caches while in the area.

After CITO and a nice fish and chips lunch at Doug's, willis007 and I made a smart plan of car shuffling as we intend to walk as little as possible - as we did 11km / 4 hour kayak already prior to the event!
Thanks for the cache and taking us here oz_bean_counter. Spent quite some time retrieving the container. Willis007 was lying down and can feel it stuck. Hatzofff said she used her umbrella to coax it. We tried our pens, was too short. The charging cable made it appear on the other side! All good! Except someone's key is missing!

I planned to attend the CITO event in the area today, but as it had a late starting time, I saw a great opportunity to grab a few local caches and a couple that I had DNF’s on. I loaded the bike and made my way to the event posted coordinates.
I rode across the bridge and came to this one, that wind was just getting stronger. This one was nicely tucked away and required some tools and time to coax it out of its hide. With the log signed and cache replaced as found, it was then a chance to solve the multi here.
Thank you for placing it here a nice hide.

This was the next on the list for my walk on the bridge with 1MinnieMoo.The wind was really annoying but we battled on.
At GZ 1MinnieMoo found the cache but we struggled to recover it. Eventually with the aid of car keys and a pen we maneuvered it so we could remove it.

Heading out for a pedal and a few caches. Parked near this one and will do the big loop around to Clontarf and back through the sports grounds and see what I can find.
With the rain looking nasty it was nice and quiet on the bridge this morning. No walkers, just a few crazy pedalers.
A nice quick find thanks.

I had three thoughts:
First. "Who is Ted Smout?" I have to head to wikipedia and immediately feel ignorant upon learning the result. It lends the question "Who or what was Hornibrook?", closely followed by "Who was Houghton?". Fascinating, isn't it, where these names come from and the history they symbolise now.
Second. The full, original viaduct stood as a footbridge when I was in primary school. My father had an interest in fishing at night from it. I carry the vaguest of memories of being with him for at least some of those trips. A mantle lantern, a sleeping bag, a few fishing rods. A memory now passes my mind that I've not recalled in many, many years. Thank you for that.
Third. Just once before, nearly a decade ago [I found a geocache right here](https://coord.info/GL8K4YVN). I missed the earlier two, though one remains legendary among the few who achieved it. Maybe I should come here to walk more often. It's a good place to think, and to remember, and to reflect.
Luckily for me, I got that opportunity tonight. My feet hurt from a hike earlier this morning, but a long, flat walk this evening works for me too. Staring down the straight path, the halfway marker of the fishing platform looks ever such a long way away. But when lost in your thoughts, the distance passes tolerably.
Getting near GZ, I assumed I should descend, but no. This featureless and non-magnetic bridge offers few options and one really should just trust the co-ordinates. Very few pedestrian muggles about out here; makes sense after being a wet day. So I could grab the goods and sign my name without fuss. About 18:30, and I'd been on the bridge for only about 20 minutes, though in no rush. Thank you oz_bean_counter for the nice time visiting this bridge

Out on the Northside to find a few targetted caches for a Challenge and stopped to grab this one while here. Interesting walk along the bridge with not too many people coming by. (oh to have an electric bike or scooter). Certainly a long way but surprised the see the structure nearby for fisher-people to use.
Stopped at GZ and went searching and just put my hand on it. Lucky me!! SL then returned as found. On the walk back I spotted lots of stingray gliding through the water, beautiful to see, some with babies.
(Family story to tell about the hornibrook highway - I was about 5 or 6, we use to holiday on the sunshine coast for Christmas holidays and drove across the Hornibrook bridge to get to the highway north. This one time, while crossing the bridge, I opened the back window of the Vanguard {old panel-van type vehicle} and a few of mum's dresses that were hanging up got sucked out the window. Dad stopped to let mum out to grab the dresses but didn't stay as there were other vehicles behind us. Mum then had to walk across the bridge to where dad had managed to park the car. It was a very quiet trip to the Sunshine Coast, everyone was in the bad books that day...)
Thanks oz_bean_counter for letting me relive those memories.

Attention Surplus Disorder
As everything has its opposite and they tend to manifest on the Discworld, this is a strange and fairly rare disease first identified by the Guild of Barber-Surgeons which afflicts school pupils.
Attention Surplus Syndrome, to give it its official name, is particularly loathed by members of the Teachers' Guild, as it makes their job a lot harder. Nobody likes a child who pays attention too hard, who listens very carefully, whose eyes follow your every move, and who listens very carefully to everything you say. It has been noted that this is like talking to a great big bottomless ear.
ASS sufferers also forget nothing they are taught, and tend to offer corrections in a very audible voice in front of the whole class. If called to the front for ritual humiliation on those occasions where a sacrificial example has to be made, these are the ones who call their teacher's bluff by demonstrating they have assimilated everything they have just heard (despite the apparent fact they have been staring out of the window for the last ten minutes).

We love bike riding and caching in winter and since today was free of commitments we decided to combine the two. Thanks oz_bean_counter for this cache.
Out and about for a sneaky morning bike ride and this happened to pop up on my radar.
I guess I've cycled past this 20 cache times in the past without adding my scribble to the log. Today was the the day to finally put pen to paper. My timing was spot on as I approached the cache i passed another cyclist heading in the opposite direction and I had a clear path behind me.
Cache was soon spotted, signed and replaced.
Thanks OBC.

Just had a family gathering for our niece's 8th birthday at Decker Park, Brighton and failing to find a cache in a tree in the park when trying to introduce the kids to geocaching, J & Mum & I set off for a walk on the bridge. Probably wouldn't have felt the need except I'd noticed this cache on the map. Having spent a lot of time in the past in Redcliffe during school days and now with our boat at Newport, I never actually knew the name if this new bridge. Interesting to find out an extra bit of history.
I do remember my car breaking down in the middle of the old bridge in the '80s when there was only 1 lane going my way and before I could think of what to do, another car pulled up in front of me and towed me off the bridge to the nearest service station on the Redcliffe side. Whew! That was a lucky rescue.
Great views today on our walk and checked out the impressive fishing platform in the middle. A few people using the facility, not sure if anything was being caught though.
A bit of wandering to figure out which level gz was on, then soon felt what we needed in a secure spot. Quick sign and return before any more bikes or walkers came along then turned and headed back to Brighton.

OMG.....found in the middle of a running festival. We weren't running, but we had to make the grab in between waves of some amazing bodies! Thankfully this was a relatively quick find.
Today, with the forecasted nice sunny weather, [@jesswrigley](http://coord.info/PRNW59T) and I took our bikes and travelled to the Redcliffe peninsula, and rode around the bay. We targeted the *Witch's Hat* series, making our way across the bridge, and rode around Clontarf and Woody Point. We enjoyed a fish and chips lunch break, and returned back to the car just after lunch. We had a few errands to complete during our return home, and stopped at a few final geocaches.
We hadn't planned on riding along the bridge to these traditional geocaches, but I thought to break up the trail along the bay, it may be nice to just have a solid ride, so we approached this geocache from the Redcliffe peninsula.
Upon arriving at GZ, we started to search around, and within a few minutes, we located the nicely hidden geocache. The cache container and logbook were in good shape. A nice hide attachment. Thanks oz_bean_counter for the cache placement and ongoing maintenance.

We went past this one thinking it might have been at the fishing spot ahead but eventually we were in the right area- I had to tie my shoelaces from a couple of angles to get this one... left a bit of pirate booty for the next finder TFTC...
After a cleanup event we had time to squeeze in one cache and wanted to make it something worth while. This cache is close to home and has really been annoying me. It was a cracking morning and a walk was just the thing we needed.
I drive over the bridge most days and have often wondered whether anyone comes out to this spot to fish. Most fishermen I know get puffed out just throwing their lines in (while sucking on a durrie). So how would they ever carry their rod and tackle box out here. At least all those imaginary fish they catch don’t weigh anything on the walk back.
What blew my mind were all the seats on the fishing platform. I think the people that build bridges don’t really understand what the people want. Then it dawned on me that this place is actually a bus stop. Someone has lost a bus stop and whacked in the middle of a bridge.
Walking out on the Hornibrook or Houghton or Ted Smout has surprisingly been on my bucket list and now ticked off. I can’t wait to see what the name of the next bridge is going to be. tftc
