Smile Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit … we are now parked at the DoC Campsite at Otamure Bay for the next few days … we intended to visit the Waro Quarry Wetlands & to walk the Pukenui Forest Loop Track today … turned out to be a successful caching day … an easy find, completed the log & replaced it … sadly too early in the day to see any bats … & I love Bats! … pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally … TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #3,032 for us.

This cache find was somewhat problematic. I had the dogs in the van parked nearby but they were kicking up a bit, as there was a local dog wandering around. As I drew up to GZ, there were two DOC helpers positioned by the cleaning station and a local man with an American lady who was visiting. I thought to myself "This is going to be a mission, might have to flag it"
The American lady was chatting up a storm so I gently started looking around. Unfortunately the American lady latched on to me and wanted to know what I was up to. I then proceeded to explain, in general terms, what Geocaching was. The DOC helper lady and the American lady were very interested and I said, if I find it, I'll show you. I looked and looked but feeling all eyes on me I was about to give up when I spotted it and wondered how I hadn't seen it earlier. Very grateful to have found it, with my dogs barks still ringing in my ears, I quickly showed them all and signed the log. Showed them a portion of the local map of the area showing all the nearby caches, told the American lady for the umpteenth time the name of the game and then rushed away. Phew!! TFTC

We have done several walks in the Pukenui Forest. I wasnt aware that there were bats in this forest. Such interesting creatures. Today was just a quick bike ride around the Karanui subdivision. This was a cache we hadn't found so we found a quick way in on our bikes. The cache was found, complete with DOC marker! Thanks for the cache DOCWhangarei.

After a DNF earlier, we headed to the start of the walkway, and this was the first option en route. A check of the hint revealed the nice sized cache and the boys added some 'treasure' from Grandad's box of tricks. Thanks DOCwhangarei, you guys got it right, unlike some other DOC regions.

We had the twin boys today for our day out to Pukenui Forest and we wanted to find the Toyota Guardians plaque for their first found one. Whilst doing that we also called by and did some caching, and had a picnic lunch in the car park afterwards, nice.

Work is finished for the year and it's time to head to Northland for a few days prior to Christmas. Primarily to see our son and his partner and our grandchildren and also a bit of a beach break at the work bach. A good few days away, and a few caches found, thanks to all COs.

We brought the car round to this side of Karanui to get the caches in this part. Butchie Bum and I were keen to clean out this area as well as do the AH Reid Lab caches today giving me a minimum of 12 caches for the day. I am trying to increase my May finds so it's going to be a busy geocaching month.

This cache came out about a week after I'd done the short loop of Pukenui forest. The big loop is still in my plans as its recently been reopened after work to prevent Kauri dieback. A short stroll down to grab this one. Our GPS took us all over the place here. I read previous logs and spotted a piece of a fence batton at the likely spot. I wasn't game to put my hand in there. Thanks for the cache Smile

Funnily enough I just went on a guides night Bat ( pekepeka ) walk in a bush track in Henderson Valley Last week!

These are some of my favourite tracks, but due to a number big reasons, have been unable to visit for far too long! Well, I needed a " forest fix" and discovered there was a geocache I hadn't found. I really hope I get to see a bat in here someday! The birdlife seems to be thriving, since the fence was erected. Nice to see, as the loss of farmland, & massive neighbourhood development is a worry. There was only 1 TB ( a monkey) which I picked up, so now none present. TFTC!

09-Jan-21
NZ Iceman and I are staying in the area for the weekend and we decided to check out the forest. We were not sure if we would take the Taraire Ridge Track or the Loop Track but the decision was made for us when we turned up as the Taraire track is currently closed for maintenance. There was stream crossings, ups and downs but we had a great time!

This was the first cache of the day - didn't take too long to find after checking the hint.

Thanks for the cache.

1006. 11:45 am. We really didn't need to use the wash station to search for the cache; the clue was slightly misleading. Found with littlest &Co. while out to check if the ridge loop track had been reopened. It also helped that today was a needed dot day. This cache had been first published just a couple of hours after we were last here. QR code worked but link disabled. Cache in great condition. TFT(trailside)C.

Took a few moments to locate. Nice find on a sunny day. QR code doesn't seem to work.

Decided to go out for a drive up this way and get the recent caches placed up these ways. Parked up in karanui rd close to cache. Made a quick afternoon dash to GZ. A few people walking the residential loop tracks but not too busy. Cache quick to locate. Signed and replaced, TFTC

Some people might say I am a bit Batty, but when I saw this new cache published late this evening, in an area I know well and so close to some of my own cache hides, I just had to make a late night dash for it.

After parking up at the assigned spot on Karanui Rd, I got out to make my way toward the forest and almost tripped over a pair of Paradise Ducks who had been roosting in the longer grass on the edge of the landscaped section. Certainly not what I was expecting to see.

A minutes walk later had me at the gate leading into Pukenui Forest and thanks to the good hint, the cache was quickly located. As expected at this time of night and just 24 minutes after being published, the log was blank, so this becomes FTF # 154 @ 10:54 pm. Quite nice synergy numbers for someone with CDO...!

Didn't see any bats tonight, but did hear several Ruru and even one Kiwi calling, which was nice to hear. Dropped off a TB in the good sized cache. Thx for placing this new cache in Whangarei, as I don't have many options left for souvenir days.
