Logs

We hope you enjoyed exploring this region of the South Island. The Pokai Whenua GeoTour: Toru has now ended. Thank you to the community for all the great logs, photos, and Favorite Points the last 2 years. It has been so fun!

27-Jan-23
Fun start to our visit of maori drawings

12-Jan-23
AliGle and I were traveling around the middle and upper South Island, with the main focus being the completion of the PWGT3 and PWGT4 GeoTours, but we found a few other caches along the way. Spotted the likely hiding spot, then waited for some muggles to pass before going in for the cache. Had a couple of plums from the nearby tree. TFTC!

12-Jan-23
Day 2 in the South Island with Vistra mopping up the PWGT caches in the area. Heading to Greymouth today. Found this one quickly thanks to the spot-on hint. A few muggles around, so some stealth was required.

09-Jan-23
Tftc, only noticed the hint afterwards oops

03-Jan-23
Man that was a long walk in the hot sun, I had no idea that it was going to be up and down and then a bit more up and down until I reached GZ. Happily I was listening to a talking book otherwise I might have given up. Thankfully the cache was super easy to find.

30-Dec-22
Found with Campmotherandken with the helpful hint! TFTC

30-Dec-22
Found with Juju54 while on our way to Hanmer - TFTC

18-Dec-22
A nice quick find here while we waited for the steam train to arrive at the station. TFTC.

15-Dec-22
Last time that I was along here was about 6-7 years ago when the old one up the hill was my target. Once I found the hint it was a quick find. It's a shame that the PWGT caches have such a short life span. I like to get them when I can without going too far out of my way. Thanks for the effort that goes into the research.

10-Dec-22
Always a nice spot to walk to along here.

26-Nov-22
Thanks for this cache, injeanious. I’m driving through on my way home from Nelson; good to stop & stretch my legs.

25-Nov-22
Quick find on way to chch. I know this area well.

31-Oct-22
For one reason and another the complete PWGT tour was never going to be within my grasp but I've realised that with a trip to North Canterbury, completing "Toru" is going to be possible, so here I am. I have fond memories of driving over this railway line in the sixties, learning by experience that one needs to slow down to about 5 miles per hour to avoid going into orbit Red Face.
I chose to not visit the rock art today so thanks for the picture and thanks for the information about rock art. And of course, thanks for the smilie Big Grin.

30-Jul-22
Headed up country today to do the PWGT caches we needed. Ruru_NZ and I that is

30-Jul-22
Managed to get away for a week. Let's see if Kiwicampnut and I can get through 2 mazes before I head home. Nice to be where there are plenty of unfound caches!
Out this way to collect the last 4 caches up this way.
A quick find after walking from the station (kiwicampnut brought the car around). Sadly won't be visiting the rock art this time as one of us has an injury meaning walking on hills is out of the question.
Thanks for the research and placement Injeanious.

Thanks for putting this here and for contributing to the geotour

15-May-22
Down from Wellington for a long weekend chasing PWGTs caches. The cache was a short stroll from a nearby street. Didn't see anyone along the grass track, so an easy find and retrieval. Definitely want to come back in summer to do the walk to the rock art site to give it time it deserves. TFTC Injeanious

12-May-22
On a mission with Flowerydaze working our way through the South Island PWGT series and this was on the list. Nice hide in a lovely area. TFTC Injeanious.

12-May-22
Day 1 of a caching trip in the South Island with Talla64, focusing on the PWGT series. This was the fourth one of our trip. Would you believe we struggled to open the big gate, then when we were on our way out, we spotted the little gate at the side, which opened with ease! I wonder if a visit to Specsavers is in order! The cache was quickly found by Talla64. Thanks for placing a cache here Injeanious.

28-Mar-22
Making our way north to Hanmer Springs today, along a longer than necessary route so we can collect all the caches that we want. After visiting Cheviot it was back to Waikari for this one. wandered along to GZ where one of us soon spotted the hide, while the other was eyeing up the peaches in the tree above. TFTC

Easy find on our geotour trip! Thanks for the cache Smile

Great peach tree near the cache!

It was a rainy afternoon so we hoped the area would be free of muggles but unfortunately our timing wasn’t great and as we arrived a man and his dog were walking towards GZ.
He was quite old and had a cane so was walking slowly and by the time we had parked and walked across the grass we saw he was standing right beside GZ.
He gave us a suspicious look so we walked in the opposite direction hoping he would move on but when we looked back he was still there
We stood for a while and looked up at the mountain watching him out of the corner of our eyes but he just stayed there watching his dog play.
Just when we thought we might be out of luck the weather gods must have taken pity on us as it suddenly started pouring with heavy rain and this made the man retreat to his nearby house.
We quickly took the opportunity to strike while the coast was clear and fortunately made a quick find.
After reshiding the cache we hastily returned to the car in case he came back with an umbrella.
Sadly it wasn’t a good day to explore the walkway today but it sounded like something we would have enjoyed.
Our 98th stop on the Pokai Whenua Geotour and our 23rd on PWGT3.

22-Jan-22
Thanks for this lovely walk with the mountains in the background.

11-Nov-21
Show weekend, we decided to go to Hanmer Springs to tackle a few PWGT, TMGT geocaches and hike a bit. We wanted to visit the Waikari rock arts for so long. So we left work early, grabbed our son from his school and off we were. Nice and easy find here, both container and logbook are in good condition. Now time to go see the rock art... Thanks for placing there and providing historical insights.

09-Nov-21

24-Sep-21
SJT_NZ and I were driving past so thought we'd pick this one up as a short detour, were a little worried as lambing season is still in swing but realised cache is early on trail. I'd visited the Maori Rock Art when holidaying in the area as a youngster, friends with family farm and a historic train ticked the box as the ultimate destination for my father, kids could help out on the farm and he could research local railway history. It seemed fun at the time though and I am keen at some stage to go back to see them and see how they have weathered over time. Thanks Injeanious and MoE for another interesting PWGT. Cache all in good order.

24-Sep-21
Visited with Tregearp whilst passing on our way back to Tasman. A beautiful spring morning with daffodils and lots of lambs in the nearby paddocks. Thanks Injeanious & MoE for the cache.

20-Sep-21
Quick easy find. TFTC

11-Sep-21
#20304. After finding the multi we needed to find today, we decided it would be a good day to do the walk to the cache near the Rock Art. On the drive from Greta Valley I was worried that the track might be closed for lambing, but there were no signs to that effect, and we met a few people using the track. Nice quick find here. TFTC.

11-Sep-21
Found with StreetWalkerNZ on a lovely spring day in North Canterbury.
It's been 4 years since we had been on this walkway, to look for the old cache Nicks Trip, but hadn't made it further than that. Today, with three newish caches to lure us, we had the time to do the whole walk to the rock art. This was close to where we parked and SW made a quick find. TFTC.

13-Aug-21
Today Mrs Biggles and I are heading to Christchurch for Flying Phoenix 21st birthday celebrations and to dog / house sit for our daughter. Fozzie the geodog is tagging along with us on this trip too. We had time to stop and find a few caches along the way which was good for me and good for Fozzie too. Last cache for me today. Found in the first place I checked as per the hint. TFTC, Biggles.

22-Jul-21
Quick walk to find this cache today. The weather was cold so I didn't want to hang around too long. Thanks for all the work with the geotour cache.
Travelling down to Hororata today. This is the second last of the PWGT3 series for me. Great tour.

16-Jul-21
We were heading into Christchurch and needed to make the detour up here to do some cache maintenance so decided to find some caches at the same time. This one was a quick grab on the way back to the car.
The walk to the Māori rock art is definitely worthwhile.
Thanks for the smilie, found with Boba Fett clone.

16-Jul-21
This was a quick find after walking up the hill to look at the rock art and replace some caches.
Thanks for the hide.

28-Jun-21
Drove a bit of a dog leg to stop in and sign this one off today. nice wee wonder to GZ and no 13 looks a bit worse for wear but still easy to find. Signed and replaced.

05-Jun-21
Down from Auckland for another blitz upon the PWGT caches and other caches that appeal to us. On this trip there is FMZ, rustynz, Rebel98 and myself in Christchurch for 3 days of fun and another adventure.

I knew I had been to this place! But it was blowing a gale and pitch black at night when me and rusty went up the hill to do the old cache Nick's Trip GC7098 in June 2018, boy that was memorable, especially when we heard a thundering of hoofs as we came down the hill, we ran like anything and got under the fence. Stood up and there were a dozen horses staring at us in the dark!

Today, however, nothing quite as exciting like that happened. I can see clearly now the path of the old railway which is where we walked to find the cache. Must go back up the hill and see the Maori art.

05-Jun-21
Easier to find this one, than the one up the hill. Thanks for hide

05-Jun-21
Easier to get to this one than the old one up the hill. Found the 13 and not long after the cache. Imagine trains passing by, a reminder of days past.

With a group of Westies on a caching weekend of fun. Thanks for the history and the hide Smile

05-Jun-21

Thanks.

25-Apr-21
What a lovely little spot. Nice to get one on the board today after i lost the whole morning looking for the PW in Cheviot to no avail. Onwards to Hamner and back to Kaikoura as part of my top of the south TMGT and PW tour for this long weekend. TFTC. Great stop.

23-Apr-21
Would have liked to see the rock art here but didn’t have the time. From where I parked there was no signage about the art which is a shame unless it’s somewhere else? Quickly found on a secluded track. Almost had it to myself (apart from a sheep further along). Tftc

15-Apr-21
In the South Island from Tauranga on a six week holiday and now following the PWGT. I hope to have the tour completed before I get home. Nice quick find today.
I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these caches. Many Thanks for bringing me here. Cheers.

#13 Ok quick find.

Having spent the night in Hanmer Springs, this was our first geo-tour cache for today.
+ a marble, - nothing.

11-Apr-21
We parked up next to my cache at the station and had a very pleasant wander in the lovely afternoon sun to this cache. A quick leap and find by the kids and it was in hand - huzzah! Time to keep motoring on home. Cheers

09-Apr-21
A visit towards Hanmer Springs for lunch, because... why not.

No problems with the find here, I had the walkway to myself which made for a simple find. I'll have to return to this are one day to go across the hill and check out the art itself. I had no idea this was even a thing until these caches were published so thanks! Maybe I never came across any sites in the North Island.

TFTC Injeanious, the cache was found in good order Very Happy Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 1 find(s) of 3 today, making this find #2573

Picking up a few caches at the end of our Easter break.

A quick find.

02-Apr-21
#9298. Its Good Friday. The start of an Easter road trip to the South Island to pick up a swag of geotour caches in Canterbury, West Coast and Otago over the extended Easter break. Doing this trip with caching buddy Infoferret as we decided to share the cost of a rental car and fuel plus share the driving with the long distances planned for this trip. We hired a hybrid car and it was a good choice as it was economical but easily made it through all the long distances with no concerns over fuel tank capacity. Today we are heading to Hokitika via Hanmer Springs, Lewis Pass, Reefton and Greymouth (just 25 litres of fuel used for this day).

Making our way north now. After the very early start (we flew down from Wellington at 7am), IF was hanging out for a coffee and some food so we stopped at the Waikari cafe. We met team Geckoh at the cafe and also walking along the track to this cache. We drove here and parked nearby. After a short walk I spied a likely hiding place and there was the cache. Signed the logbook, gathered the codeword and replaced everything as found. Thanks Injeanious for the PWGT3 cache. I visited the Maori Rock drawings several years ago. Impressive place to visit but beware of the electric fences. They have a severe kick. I needed shoulder surgery after being jolted by the fence and having a muscle torn off my shoulder!

02-Apr-21
2 April 2021 11:04. Paused for a coffee (had been up at 5am this morning for an early flight!) Bumped into Gekoh who was doing something similar. Good to meet you finally, I've seen your name on a few of my caches.

Wandered over for a much appreciated quick find. TFTC.

FITW GreenMenace

Going out to Takaka for the long weekend, this was the 1st leg stretcher stop.
Been to the rock art site a few years back. More impressive to me are the rock formations themselves than the art.
Worth a visit!

Anyway, now it was just a quick stop to grab the cache. Quickly found in the obvious spot.

After taking the long way here from the Waikiri Station cache, suppose it was good for the step count, we met Infoferret and GSEL again, as they were returning from GZ. Got a quick warning about the strength of local electric fences and we parted ways. Cache found easily. Thank you for your efforts in this cache placement. TFTC
