Visiting Albany from Southern Highlands NSW for couple of days on our big WA road trip. Stopped at the nearby laundromat & found this EC. Great rock. TFTC
Cruising around Aust clockwise. Was really looking forward to my first trip to West Aust and this was the first port of call. With no shore excursions booked, the day was going to be sight seeing and caching by shanks pony.Doing some preliminary planning of caches to grab before leaving home, this earthcache was high on the list to collect. After visiting the museum and gaining some of the history of dog rock I was on guard in case a local tried to sell it to me . . .It's great to see progress didn't put the road through the rock. Assume its too large for someone's front yard as a start to a rock garden. My observations were ok'd by the CO, thanks Morgo the geo for highlighting the dog rock.
Thanks Morgo the geo for this Earth cache at dog rock. I have sent my answers. I love Dog Rock! Its perfect. A favourite point for the location.
We called by this earthcache this morning after driving by last night on our way to get fish and chipsAnswers sent to CO today This is certainly a unique looking rock and Im glad it has been left beside the road for everyone to see as they drive by
I have sent answers to the CO.This was an opportunity for me to learn more about the large granite rocks I have been seeing on my walk of the Bibbulmun Track. I finished my end to end yesterday and am staying in Dog Rock motel across the road from this wonderfully- shaped rock. This is my 2000th cache (not counting Ad Labs).TFTC
Day #6. My last minute WAGB adventure continues today! Road tripping again today but more local. Posums and I are focusing on Albany and surrounds. Plenty still to find on our lists.A cool earthcache here at GZ. It took me a while to realise what the black and white paint represented .A big thanks goes to Morgo the geo for taking the time to add Dog Rock to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Wow! The fun just never stops.Have you logged your will attend for Victoria's first ever Block Party? (Think Mega but even more special!)Join us on 22-23 March 2025 in Sunbury to celebrate 25 years of geocaching by logging your will attend at [**GCAP417**](https://coord.info/GCAP417).
I came over to WA last year for WAGB 23 and had such a great time so I decided to come back over again for this years events in Augusta. So after all of the planning with dates worked out my work decided that I could only have one week off so flying over was my only option. So I flew into to Perth and my first stop will be Busselton for 2 nights. It has been 47 years since I was in this part of WA and Im really looking forward to the re visit.Im making my way down the coast and picking out caches that look interesting to me.After spending a bit of time in Bunbury it was back to the Geo Rent a Car to continue along the coast and I then made it to Busselton.Day 5 of the trip. After caching around Busselton, Dunsbourgh and Cape Naturaliste I reached Albany for 3 nights.Caught up with Roaming Howie again last night and another plan was hatched to first head south to find WAs first then North for the challenge caches. The challenge series and the Lads on Tour jigsaws series are all done so time to head back to base and of course find a couple along the way.I remember visiting Dog Rock all those years ago and I had to come back now for another look to see if it was just as I remembered from if back then.Answers have been sent to the CO.Thanks Morgo the geo TFTC.
#5725 Logging with permission. A highlight on our WA adventure visiting from NE Victoria. Catching up on some laundry nearby we ventured around the corner to check out Dog Rock with the geohounds. Brought a smile to our face, the likeness to a pooch is immediately evident. After taking a photo with the geohounds in front of the boulder a local got verry chatty drawn in by our dogs. It took us a while to get back to our laundry! TFTC Morgo and quick response. This is a fave from us all (including Benson & Essie).
Another long trip around AU over the top end with lots of detours. Now heading back east across the Nullarbor.TFTC. An excellent rock in the middle of town.
We came and hopefully we conquered the answers.Always lovely seeing Dog Rock.TFTC Cheers Morgo Answers will be sent after I submit this log.
Found at 3:26 PM GAFF1.So this "Dog Rock" thing finally made sense as we have been shopping at the Woolworths store for the last few days and saw "Albany Dog Rock" over the entrances and wondered what the heck is that all about! Now we know - but what about the big boulder across the road where the motel is - is that its hind quarters? Thanks to Morgo the geo
Great rock! How cool is this?Headed into Albany and got the treadlies off the car to try to clean up some of these unending wonderful geocaches in Albany! I think we might be stuck here for weeks trying to get all these smilies! We did not realise that Albany had soooo many hills, we did about 20kms on the bikes and by the end of the day saz never wants to see another hill again! .....definitely deserved a frothie after that! Thank you Morgo the geo for placing and maintaining Dog Rock for us and others to find and enjoy!
There's no mistaking the reason for its name! It was great to have this EC to encourage us to look closer at the granite and its structure, and not just its shape! Thanks for highlighting!
Have sent the answers to the CO.This was a great rock to see.Was able to get a t-shirt for my visit to Dog Rock too.Tftc
Ultimo giorno ad Albany, domani si riparte. Ne approfitto per venire a studiare questo magnifico masso con un'altrettanta magnifica ed emblematica storia. Ciao e grazie. #10788Last day in Albany, we start again tomorrow. I take this opportunity to come and study this magnificent boulder with an equally magnificent and emblematic history. Hello and thanks. #10788
We stayed at the dog rock motel and this was a great introduction into earth caches. Thank you
We have arrived in Albany and are here for a couple of nights. We decided to ride our bikes into town and checkout what there is. We came across this rocknafter reading about it in the museum. Liked the history you included on the rock. Thanks for putting this earth cache together
Absolutely loved this rock. Its hard to believe that people wanted to cut up and destroy this treasure.Thank goodness for the protests which saved it. Its and absolute beauty!Writing up this log on aeroplane mode while in the plane returning to Melbourne after completing our Bibbulmun Trek, so it may be a short interval before Morgo the Geo gets our answers, however they are sitting here ready to go.TFTC, it is a beautiful natural statue. So, we have started the logging process.
Called past Dog Rock to make the observations while staying Albany for a few days. Very good to hear that this iconic rock was saved from destruction so many years ago. Thanks for the earthcache Morgo the geo!
Earthcache Weekend!!Was meant to collect the info when I was in town yesterday and only remembered when I got home. No fuss, had to go back in this arvo. Parking was easier too being a Sunday.Info collected and sent to CO.Thanks for placing this Earthcache Morgo the geo.CheersMCFonz
What am interesting rock in the middle of town definitely didn’t expect that to be here
In WA for 3 days, so I decided to hire a car and head south from Perth and drive around the wheat belt and back up the coast line. Day 1, I headed from the city out towards lock then south through the back roads all the way down to Albany, collecting LGAs and a few target caches along the way. Once in Albany I found a few caches around the area and the oldest cache in WA. Nearly 750km for the day and 50 finds.
Thanks for the cache

TFTEC. Wow it is so unusual and so dog like. Had a quick look around Albany and will be back tomorrow to look at more. So much to see here. I’m visiting from the Hunter Valley in NSW. I’ll send the answers asap
Albany Day 6
Arrived into town Saturday booked into the caravan park for 8 days.
Its a cold & miserable day so it was not until after lunch we went for a drive to locate a few caches.
This location is iconic to the area. My brother did a cruise & it is the only time he has been to Albany but Dog Rock is one of a few locations that hr remembers well.

Haven't even been this up close and personal to this before. Very impressive...especially for the dog tragic with me.
We are heading down south from Geraldton for a few days mainly aiming on picking up LGA's, Adventure labs and virtual's and anything else that comes close on our planned trip.
We are far from geologists as the CO will guess from our answers but we do enjoy earth caches and learning alittle bit more about earth science with every one we do and this one was no exception.
Although the rock is million of years old it certainly has had a lot of controversy over the relatively short period of time, by the sounds of it it is still lucky to be here.
The weather wasn't the best here today in the drizzling rain but hopefully we have collected enough information for this log to remain, if not we will happily delete it and come back another day.
If we did pass it was definitely a learning experience for us and a favourite point to you.
Many thanks for setting this one up for us to enjoy.

Very nice location - really like the photo that woolwood9 has put up.
Thanks morgo the geo for the reason to visit this site.
We don't really do too many of these type of Earthcaches as we struggle with the earth science.
If our answers are not correct we are happy to DNF.
Enjoyed our time around Albany!

Heading back to WA for a visit. Staying a few days in Albany. With rain overnight we werent sure what we would attempt today. Headed up to Mt Clarence for some AdLabs but with the weather clearing a few more caches kept being added to our target then a quick lunch with iluvtrekking before just one more turned into another dozen or so.

One half of the team had visited Albany 30 years ago and had photos of Dog Rock already so it was fun to revisit and remember the previous holiday to WA. Now as a cacher, I looked at the granite rock in a totally different way. Studying the phenocrysts and veins which I know I wouldn't even have noticed 30 years ago, I and the other Triton had a geology lesson today.
Thanks Morgo the geo for the awesome earthcache.

The boulders spread through the town are magnificent. I have even seen them filling up people's front garden. These here are nice specimens. Mother and child. I sent the answers. TFTC Morgo the geo.
I visited this earthcache on a trip to the west from Adelaide.
I stayed with a relative in Albany for a couple of nights and took the opportunity to complete the Whale Tail series and a few other nearby caches, including this one, today. Unfortunately It was a terrible day weather wise, with very heavy rain for most of the morning. Ever the optimist though, I headed out anyway and it eventually did clear up a bit for a while.
Later in the afternoon I headed back to town and did a few more caches, including this one at a very familiar local landmark. While I’ve driven by this rock dozens of times, its the first time I’ve stopped for a closer look.
Thanks Morgo the geo for another interesting earthcache.

Found while staying in the motel across the road. What a great rock. Answers have been sent to CO. In the photo is my caching teddy-Miss Chief. TFTC
Found it! Not hard, given its size. Woof! First saw this 40years ago (last time in Albany) tftc
My Muggle Husband visited Albany as a boy with his parents and saw dog rock. In later years he could not remember where he had seen it. He decided, for some reason, that he had seen it in Bendigo. When we arrived in Albany, he realised that this was the rock and this was the place. At the age of 65 it is nice to have that sorted out. I have sent my answers to the CO and hope they are OK.
Been to Albany for work and had a bit of time on hand.
Had a look and found an earth cache called 'Dog Rock'... well that was a must have considering i got one at home myself.
And that chunk of rock does indeed have a remarkable resemblance from the right angle.
Loved the story to it and how it got its collar.
Thanks for bringing me here

Love Earthcaches and have always enjoyed seeing this rock. Great combination though will add that the inly glassy lustre at one stage was my eyes as i came to terms with the geological jargon. Loved it. Tftc
Started our 2nd tour of WA now checking out Albany and surrounds. 16 December 2021 7:12 pm Tyfc Morgo the geo total caches now 3467
Today was another day of exploring in the South West of WA. Our focus today was to pick up some virtual caches and some earth caches and we finished it off with a multi. Once again our intention was not to be all consumed with geocaching but rather included geocaching into the days activities and utilise it as a tool to learn more about the area. The six caches we found today were perfect for just that.
This was the first cache of the day . I remember first seeing dog rock over thirty years ago and was as impressed with it then as we were today. Clearly it is. Very well maintained by the local council and the immediate area clearly benefits from its existence. The Earth Cache gave a great opportunity to have even a closer look. Answers sent to CO . TFTEC

During our recent visit to Western Australia we visited Dog Rock and collected information for this earthcache. Answers have been sent to the CO.
Dog Rock is certainly a prominent feature in the area. As well as the shape of the rock and its geology, we were surprised how prominent the name "Dog Rock" is displayed in the businesses in the area, in particular the Vets over the road.
A photo has been included with this log. Thanks Morgo the geo for a well constructed earthcache at a fun site.

175ish days since we left home and stated our ‘lap year’ half way in our original time allocation not even close to half way around the country…hmm I guess we won’t be ‘home’ for Christmas….oh well… (shhh don’t tell the grandparents)
Perhaps if I stopped looking at so many rocks, trees and beaches we wouldn’t be taking so long…then there are the flowers, old things and street art that keeps catching our attention.. maybe it’s the Geocaches… what ever it is, we are having a bloody brilliant time and I wouldn’t change a thing!
Thanks for being one of the awesome caches we found in Albany this week.

Thanks for the earth Cache Morgo the Geo. Teamed up with papillon367 and Ullyssia for the weekend of WAGB in Albany and most loge were signed as PUPP. It was a great weekend and this was the first for the day.
Thanks for placing this Earthcache to challenge and educate us. Found on the WAGB long weekend. We had to take a few photos and cone back to this one
We came, thinking we knew what we were looking for... wow, so many colours! I think someone must have had fun with a paintbrush or spray can, as there were yellows, gold, pinks, blues, greens... hard to make out what was rock and what was paint
Photo is a bit cropped, so as to not give away the answers to the questions
Thanks for this earth cache Morgo! One day I'll actually understand what we are talking about

Teamed up with Photo-Play and ullyssia for caching today on a cool and rainy day. We signed all the logs as P.U.P-P. unless one of us had found the cache previously. We went to this earthcache first thing in the morning before heading out towards Denmark. Answers sent to the CO. Interesting Albany icon! Thank you for the cache Morgo the geo.
Took the kids to this iconic Albany spot to check out the rock and complete the cache. Boys were stoked by the quick response from the CO when we sent through the answers they worked on.
Thanks Morgo the geo for placing this cache for me to find, this is find number 3040 for me.

I have been to Albany a few times and Dog Rock was always the central place for us! Glad he stayed in town for the visitors! Cheers!
WA goes big weekend. Today’s task was to head out to Denmark, and have a bit of fun with some of Roymerc BOYB caches, and also swing by a couple of events. The overall goal to grab 12 different types of caches in 1 day
The day started off with retrieving ‘Ralph Tracks Them Down’. A final we obtained a while ago, but never got a chance to grab the cache itself. Met up with some fellow cachers at GZ, who were also off to Denmark for the events like us
After arriving in Denmark and grabbing something to eat, it was time to meet the lord himself, Roymerc. An explanation about his BYOB #8, as well as a chance to have a brief conversation with him at the end set the day off to be good fun.
After meeting the man behind these fabulous caches, we decided to power walk the trail of BYOB, with a couple of other types of hides along the way. Managed to knock this one off relatively quickly, and the caches were just insane. Special mention and credit to jasmine_stephensen for kicking off her shoes, and wading through the ice cold water to BYOB 10.
12:50pm... it was time to collect some rubbish. Headed down to ocean beach. We were handed a bag and some gloves each by Cravo 10, and set off on our own little section to do our bit for the environment. Picked up a few caches around the area, as well as watching some of the surfers tear up a few waves.
A general drive around Denmark picking up the adventure lab, virtual, puzzles, multis, and traditionals, was soon accompanied by the drive back to Albany, grabbing the wherigo and letter box, and then heading to the community celebration event. Met up with even more like minded people than last night, and was able to grab some left over merchandise as well.
Finished the night off with some caches around town, (approximately 10).
Thank you to all the CO’s for the finds. We had an incredible weekend!
