Logs
We turned this into a park and grab as the track to the cache was very dry - no mud here today.+ a marble, - nothing.
Set out at dawn to head over the Pigroot to do some MotoTokens in the Kyeburn and Nenthorn areas. So picked this up on the way. I enjoy finding abandoned roads and, of course, abandoned railway lines. TFTC.
I was out on a maintenance trip and decided that all work and no play was not for me and it was time for a break.
Interesting to see the site that necessitated this road being closed for a month, a bit of a nuisance so I hope the repair works!.
As I was signing the log I was thinking how ironical it is that given the rising price of petrol we may soon be traveling by the old horse again and will they be forced to reinstate the old alignment?
I know that I think twice before filling the ute and unnecessary trips are now ruled out but maintenance is a necessary trip!
Thanks

There was even parking! I’ve only been over the pig route a handful, dozen at most, times and it is a memorable trip each time.

First cache for the day on a wee trip around the block, nice park and grab. Thanks Bitsprayer
After spending time (and caching) in Ranfurly and Naseby I was now heading via the Pig Root to North Otago. Picked up a few caches along the way. This one was a reasonably quick find. #4962. TFTC.
Well, what a fascinating bit of roading history. Realignment in 1938, and the leasehold either side was owned by the inappropriately named William Freeland . Have now learnt the name of that saddle, too "Red Cutting Summit".
We have looked at that stretch of farm track and assumed it was an early road alignment, taking the obvious route (well before money and digging machinery was available). It's even still a legal public road, except that you would have to jump over private property to get to it.
The other place where you look across and see an old road alignment is further towards the Maniototo, by "Shag Culvert' cache. Was that also realigned around 1938?
Very helpful to have the parking pullover and recommended direction of travel. We stopped on the way back from a wonderful Sunday outing doing the Preston Road caches and then our favourite Rail Trail - Waipiata - Hamiltons Diggings Road - Daisybank bike ride. We desperately needed a find to sooth the 20 minutes wasted searching and still DNF at Industries Past in Waipiata!

A nice quick find thanks.
Ms_KR and I are on a wee South Island break. Today we started to head home through Ranfurly and the Pig Route. A lovely drive that way home.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

My last VF test for this trip, was Mosgiel to Kyeburn... with that completed it was time to grab a few caches while I make my way slowly back to CHCH. Left Invercargill at 0530, and made it back home by 1615 with a few stretch/geocaching stops along the way.
All fine here! I assume I'm out of site of the NZTA/whoever traffic camera, it probably only takes stills anyway, so I'd be no issue with the work car being signwritten.
TFTC Wilbywarrior, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 2 find(s) of 5 today, making this find #3179

Needed to go and do some maintenance on Lomond Waltz in Naseby so decided to have bit of a raod trip and actully find a few caches (which we haven't done for a while). Just some easy park and grabs to get back into it. TFTC
