I have often past this stone structure as we travel along here when staying in queenstown each year and now i know what its purpose was. Great ingenuity by Mr. White and probably more lucrative that looking for gold. We parked at the sports building and walked back along the grass only to find we needed to be on the road side of the fence. this was quickly rectified and the cache was soon found . We took nothing and left nothing . Thank you for pointing this structure and its purpose out to me . I took a photo of the smoke house .
Parked in the car park nearby and walked back along the road. Could have parked right beside it. Fascinating history. Thanks
Tyftc beautiful day though it was on other side of the road and I thought it was on other side of the wall too.
We had always wondered what this structure was and now we know. Thanks for the history lesson.+ a marble, - nothing.
Slowly making our way from Queenstown to Wanaka today, and this was a nice easy find along the way, and helpfully out of the way of the busy road. TFTC!
Aprs notre priple en Australie, on dcouvre la nouvelle Zlande. Journe Queenstown. On logue en team Mado. Merci pour la cache et cette belle balade autour du lac Hayes. Trouve sans problme.

Very interesting info about the chimney, we are staying nearby and I was wondering what it was forTrust a geocache to give you the info! Found with SallyRM and the geobaby on the last day of our NZ trip
Flying home today after a wonderful week in New Zealand. Grabbed this cache across the road from our accommodation
Tftc. Great spot, thanks for the insight in some local history, my dad's lived here 20 odd years and never knew it was a fish smoker.
We were on the wrong side of the fence but had no problem retrieving the cache. Thanks!
Day 4: The Road to Balclutha Todays agenda was to get down to Balclutha where we are staying on the way to the Catlins. The route on the beautiful day took us through the beautiful Central Otago and Teviot regions, where we took in the landscapes and found quite a few caches along the way. It was a long drive but we really enjoyed the little highlights along the way thanks to the ALs and caches placed by everyone. (End of the cut and paste bit)Heres the specific log for this cache: The first cache of the day was picked up as we left towards Cromwell. We stopped by Lake Hayes to drink in the scenery and I made a dash for this cache in the corner. I was wondering about this precise structure yesterday, so thanks for the insight. TFTC!
My little sister went bush walking for this one. But was pleased to learn the history of the smoker. TFTC
Today we are traveling home to Brisbane from Queenstown after a fabulous 15 days in the land of the long white cloud. With a few hours to kill before our flight, it was decided a spot of geocaching was in order. Took a few minutes longer than it should have to find this one. TFTC. TNLN. SL.Find # 1668.
Very interesting history of the White family and Trout smoking. Parked in a nearby carpark and walked up to GZ as the road was extremely busy. Came across a chook on the edge of the road that was freaking out about us approaching. It decided to cross the busy road and we were worried we’d witness chook vs car carnage. Amazingly it made a dash half way across at the right time, then patiently waited on the middle white line until it was safe to cross to safety on the other side. Smart chook - has obviously done this before… so we’ve discovered the answer to the life long riddle…
Why did the chook cross the road?
Because it saw 2 cachers coming

Tftc. Couldn’t open the container so we photo logged this one. Thanks for the info about trout smoking.

Hi there Wilbywarrior - a Merry Christmas to you. Circumstances required a trip in to Queenstown (airport) from Wanaka today to pick up my present - my wife arriving from Perth . I found this cache at 1040am after a short search - and the container and log were both in good condition unless noted in the Fieldnotes below. TN, LN, SL. Thanks to Wilbywarrior for this cache - the 1st of 1 finds for the day.

#2125. Day 7 of of our week in Queenstown. GB Leader and I are celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary! AUGUST was the big day.
Today, a road trip to Wanaka and Cromwell. Slow start after our lovely dinner last night at the Bavarian Restaurant.
First stop, here, but the cache eluded me as I was on the wrong side of the fence! Tripped to Wanaka & Cromwell, then stopped here again on the way back to Frankton. 2nd time lucky! In fact, I probably could have reached through on the first visit!

Travelling from Cromwell to Queenstown today as part of our Central Otago excursion. Stopped in the pavilion carpark to photograph Lake Hayes and the surrounding autumn colours, and to pick up this cache. It was a little distance away but was a quick find. #4913. TFTC.

Its been a long time in the planning but finally the week long trip to the South Island to complete the Routeburn Track is here. Day #7 of the trip and its our last chance to explore before flying home. After enjoying brunch at the Millbrook Resort we headed for some caching and shopping on the way to the airport.

Well if it wasn't for this cache I would have driven on by without even noticing this special feature. Thank you so much for pointing it out Wilbywarrior. TFTC # 18,004
Early morning find here, I was doing a drivetest to Wanaka, then today the plan was to do a few between Omarama and Oamaru, then Kurow to Waimate. Last night the boss was looking for some equipment, and it was in Queenstown after a VF site upgrade so I offered to grab it and take it back, given I was close enough. That in my posession I headed over to Omarama, but not before grabbing this. Nice! Interesting read, thanks for that.
TFTC Wilbywarrior, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 1 find(s) of 2 today, making this find #3118
