Logs
We completed the Tarn Shelf Circuit with absolutely perfect weather. 24 degrees, with still remenents of the snow. Our favourite piece in the hut would have to be the Ice Skates! What an incredible piece of history
I walked the Tarn Shelf circuit with my son today, who had never been past the first tarn on the shelf before, and never visited Twilight Tarn. I think this was my 5th visit. We walked the circuit in a clockwise direction. The weather was fine, with some low clouds at times and cool winds. Lots and lots of people up at the shelf looking at the fagus.I photographed the skis up against the back wall, with my name in front of a ski bootTFTC
We arent sure why more people havent found this splendid virtual cache in the year since it was published. But we were glad we pencilled in the walk for today to head out to the Tarn Shelf Walk. It was a super Autumn day. We decided to go clockwise even though most reviewers on AllTrails suggested anti clockwise to be the best way. We were glad we trusted other cachers logs and took the clockwise route as I prefer to get tricky sections done whilst still fresh and energized. We loved this walk and had many stops to admire the scenery, tarns, huts, rocks, plants/trees, lizards and to listen to the bird song.Attached are our photos from inside where we stopped for our lunch. All up we spent 5 and a half hours on this walk and thoroughly enjoyed it. TFTC
We set out to climb Mt Field West but by the time we got to the Tarn Shelf turn off there was strong wind, rain, snow and hail. The Rodway Range was clagged in so we decided to do the Tarn Shelf Circuit instead. First stop was the skiers' shelter hut where five ladies, who had intended to go to Lake Rhona, had spent the night. We continued on, stopping for morning tea at Newdegate Hut then on to Twilight Tarn. Two more ladies, also refugees from abandoned Lake Rhona trips, soon arrived. After lunch we continued past Lake Webster in constantly changing weather conditions - sun, rain, hail, snow - and returned to the car.
When this cache was first published we decided to leave it until the turning of the Fagus and today turned out to be the day. Coincidentally it was exactly two years ago to the very day when we first did the tarn shelf circuit to see the Fagus. Being a Friday last time though it was nowhere near as busy as today, although once we got onto the shelf and past the day shelter the crowds dissipated considerably.
As with last time, we chose the clockwise option as you tend to get more sun, plus it's good to get a lot of elevation done and dusted to start with. The weather was pretty good with some sunshine but we still got a bit of mist and plenty of cloud. Two years ago, however, it was clear blue skies for the entire walk and absolutely stunning views, although there's nothing to complain about today's views either!
This is a wonderful spot and a great idea for a virtual cache, and hopefully an incentive for more cachers to get out and experience this amazing part of our landscape.
TFTC Lil Rafa and an easy FP awarded!
Cheers,
The Hancock Clan

Hello Lil Rafa thank you for the cache
I had not been along the Tarn Shelf Track before, the last time I was in the area was when I walked out to Mt Field West.
AmazingDaughter, Meg and I did the walk clockwise.
So the steepest longest part of the walk was done with first up.
Up at the top there was nothing to see apart from cloud, I'm glad I had seen the view great before.
As we walked down we stopped off at the huts on the way signing log books as we went.
Once down below the clout we started to get a view of the lovely tarns.
We had lunch at Twilight Tarn after having a look around the hut it was too gloomy to have lunch inside.
We didn't make any detours on the way out as by now we were struggling a bit.
This is a lovely hut thank you for bringing us here.
