Ahhh the DEKA sign....a true piece of Kiwi history! The only thing I had on me to put in my photo was my watch to prove date and time. Sorry for the blurriness! Found with coolsheep.
A little caching adventure around Huntly was long overdue, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to do so! Visiting this true piece of Nz history was definitely on the priority list. I hope it stays! Great fun on all counts, TFTC!!
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I live full-time in our caravan travelling around NZ, visiting the places we want to visit & doing the things we want to do and fitting in a bit of Geocaching here & there we had been down in Wellington for a few days & were now heading North again decided wed stop here in Huntly for a quick bite to eat & nab a couple of caches while here this was reasonably easy to do, answers & photos have been messaged to the cache owner were pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... #15,042. I was heading south to Rotorua and decided to divert into Huntly to do the adlab and visit this iconic DEKA sign. I am old enough to remember going into DEKA stores in several towns and cities. From memory the one in Rotorua used to be a McKenzies or Woolworths store until the site was rebranded as DEKA. Retail trade in NZ is clearly a tough place as this brand did not last too long. Have sent the answers to the CO. Hoping my observations were correct. Thanks ABCDF4 for the virtual highlighting a piece of our retail history.
We visited here today and I remember when this shop used to be open. Answers sent to co and pic attached. Thanks for this virtual and an iconic place.
Made it to the virtual coords, dont know if my answer was correct or if I was looking in the complete wrong spot being night time.. we will see but I have attached a picture of proof of being present at the time. Appreciate the virtual!
Day 2 of our out of town mission with Reschedule. Decided we would head into Huntly on our way home to bulk up numbers.
Out for an afternoon of geocaching in this area. Happy to claim this virtual photo attached. Thanks for setting this one up
I totally lucked into a parking spot for this cache. I knew I wouldn't be there very long. When I actually stood in GZ, I wondered how to get the answers needed. I took a lot of pictures and did my best to use my vision, as well. Answers have been sent to the CO. Thank you for the smiley and the fun! The day:Today I continued my week-long adventure solo from the U.S. on the North Island. I was headed back north toward Auckland in order to fly to Australia in a couple of days. I revisited one cache and found several others. I drove a lot more than I would have liked, but I was getting better at the "other side of the road" so there was that in my favor. LOLMany thanks to all the geocachers who placed and continue to maintain their geocaches for folks like me to find. I know it's not always easy, but know that I appreciate you.
Not sure what to expect but somehow thought this was going to be a highlight of Huntley!! All pretty straightforward. TFTC!
Slowly making our way from Auckland to Hamilton. Lots of caches along the way and lots of adventure labs as well. Really fun day.TFTC Wilbert67
Were travelling on a short holiday with Wilbert from Australia. Grabbing caches along the way and seeing new sites not visited before.TFTV
As a once in a lifetime holiday, this year we are traveling for 7 weeks to Vietnam, Bali, Australia and New Zealand. In Australia we meet Ellen Sch and MrVon sr and Ingsve to visit these last two countries, so here we cache together. Now we have solved many caches so we have a large number of solved coordinates. But we are interested in all types of caches, so if you receive a log, it means that we have visited your cache. We haven't quite decided where we're going, but we'll probably let the weather decide for us. We want warmth because in Norway it is now freezing. We will stay for about 2 weeks in Australia and 2 weeks in New Zealand and we will end the trip with the Mega event in Adeleide on 29 February. So thank you very much to all of you who make it possible for us to travel around finding caches. On March 6, we set course for Norway again. There are extremely nice people everywhere and we are welcomed, we thank you very much. Thanks to our cache friends for good company on the trip.
Cachehilsen fra Ellen Sch, NorgeMe and MrV sr have come down to Australia and New Zealand, -an old dream has finally come to an end. Team Eika and Ingsve have also traveled with us on this trip.We have been traveling cross-country for a month, and the goal is to end up in Adeleide and mega-event on the leap year. We have especially looked for old caches, to fill jasmer'n, for a couple of pieces, and for the other two of us who have started to think about reviewing more. The vast majority of them showed up at their places, sometimes we had to search a bit, but we were usually lucky in the end. There were also some DNFs.We have mostly logged in with the common nickname N4 (ingsve, Von sr. TeamEika and Ellen Sch), but our own nicknames are also used.A big thank you to all you CO's for laying out and maintaining your caches. Without their work, we would never have been able to make a living with this hobby.Always nice to have a new smiley face on the map.Cache greetings from Ellen Sch, Norway
Out on a geocache trip with Ellen Sch , Team Eika and ingsve on holiday in New Zealand, and today it was this area that was prioritized If nothing else is mentioned, we found the cache at good coordinates and it was fine To save space in the log, we often log in with the nickname N4 Many thanks to CO for laying out and maintaining this Greetings from Norway TFTCUte p en geocache-tur med Ellen Sch,Team Eika og ingsve p ferien i New Zealand og idag var det dette omrdet som ble prioritert Hvis ikke annet er nevnt s fant vi cachen p gode koordinater og den hadde det braFor spare plass i loggen logger vi ofte med nick N4Tusen takk til Til CO for utlegg og vedlikehold av denne Hilsen fra Norge TFTC

Great cache - great day to be out - many thanks Tftc Detoured to Huntly for this one great sign
3 weeks (adventure) vacation in New Zealand ???????? for dschinny and me. We are very excited about what awaits us, what we will experience and simply are looking forward to a wonderful time together in this beautiful country ??We will spend 1.5 weeks on the North Island and the rest of the time on the South Island. Today we left Auckland and headed to Hamilton, our next stop during our roadtrip. On our way we made some stops for some caches - especially for EarthCaches as well as VirtualCaches too. These caches usually show you places that you wouldn't have visited as a normal tourist. So we made a stop at Huntly too.Of course I will add the required photo to the log, our answers has been sent via MessageCenter to CO.Thanks a lot for this cache and many greetings from two German GC-crazy New Zealand vacationers ???? zh9 ??
A last minute plan was hatched for Keylev and Mrs NZT to have a girls day out in the Waikato today. We started out early in the day. grabbed a coffee at Mercer and then started caching. We had a great day driving around lesser travelled roads and enjoying the sun. Got a few newer adlabs completed and also a number of other more traditional caches. Thanks to all the CO's for placing and maintaining the caches. Finally finished back in Pokeno with a well deserved ice cream and after 11 hours caching we were ready to head home for some dinner. A GREAT day out.Answers sent. TFTC!
This was just a brief stop on our way to friends in Auckland. We must have passed this many times on our way south previously but never noticed it. I learnt about it using the Atlas Obscura app and checked to see if there was a cache here. It's always fun discovering these quirky locations. I'm back in New Zealand for first time in four and a half years. After spending the last few days in the Manawatu, I'm heading back up to Whangarei, but I stopped in Cambridge last night to break up the journey. I've got no time commitments today until I have to be at my friend's place in Auckland, so I've planned a few caches to search for on the way. I've found the traditional cache at this classic sign a few years ago, so the virtual was a must. Answers have been sent to the co. Thanks for setting up.
First find for this trip to NZ. Rather gloomy in the rain but standing straight and tall as ever. Tftc
Today I had a day resting in huntly, bless the lovely people I met at mcinteys, and while passing by this spot a couple of times I finally spotted the icon. I'm still not sure what the sign advertises as I'm from overseas but I'm glad to see history of being preserved. I like this sign and it's casual futurism style design. Glad it's still here, this town has a vibe that's for sure.My thanks to the owner ABCDF4 for setting up this virtual and Ponting out this bit of local nostalgia to me. Great visiting, cheers!-- This log is trackable ! ---- Feel free to discover ---- Please mention, in which cache you've seen this code: ---- 3TABQX --
On our way to the CITO event, so whilst Daddypig and his assistant went to get coffee (and pies) I walked up the road to the sign. It's a while since we drove through Huntly but good to see the sign still there.
Came here with FMZ and Jagersmum, didn't know this virtual was here but I do remember the old DEKA store, I seem to remember visiting it and have been inside it. Good to see the old sign still here! TFTC
I learned a bit about Deka when viditing here, from the cache as well as from FMZ and Punga and Paua. Had not noticed the sign before. TYFTC!
On the trail of icons, for this month's challenge, I realized I'd never been to this virtual, so being sort of in the area, we came by here to pay homage to this NZ and Huntly icon! Answers sent, and found with Jägersmum and Punga & Paua. TFTC!
This really is an iconic spot. So iconic there is not just this Virtual cache here, there is also a traditional as well as an Adventure Lab Stage. But this is completely understandable as the sign is a piece of history.
We have fond memories of Deka. It was a great place to buy a variety of things and a shop you could browse in for ages. We love that this sign has remained here for all of these years and hope it remains here forever. We wish we could say the same about our Billy Idol tapes and fluoro socks.
The answers have been sent and our photo is attached.
Thanks ABCDF4 for setting up your Virtual cache in this perfect, historic spot.

I walked from the freedom camping spot by the power station with the intention of walking around Lake Hakanoa today.
After yesterday's awful weather it was lovely and sunny.
It took me a moment or two to spot the sign.
Then there were two muggles sitting right next to it which was awkward.
I used to love shopping at DEKA and also remember getting lots of bargains when it closed down.
Thanks for setting this up

So glad this historic sign was allowed to remain. I think the The Warehouse is the modern equivalent of DEKA.

I decided last night, Friday night and very spur of the moment to head south outta Auckland to Waiouru and stay the night in my van at Whakapapa Village, it was going to be 2 nights, but had to be back in Auckland on Monday to work for my sister, so it was just the one night. I had in mind to do cache maintenance - done. Also place a few caches - done. Pick up several challenge mystery caches - done, ad lab at Tokaaanu - done. Bonus was seeing my cousin in Waiouru! Didn't know she moved from Auckland to live there. So we had a great catch up.
Gorgeous day for caching, and I'm on a virtual caching spree, will have collected 5 after this weekend, not bad, not bad. Was very tempted to buy a cold bottle of wine at the booze shop by the sign, and take it off to the river and enjoy it, but that would have been rather naughty and I wouldn't have got much caching done!
Now to head south to the Zig Zag virtual, thanks for the hide.

The great thing about moving to a new town is the fresh set of geocaching opportunities that present themselves.
So today I set out to go one better than my previous eight-types-in-a-day record from November 2021.
I was unaware of this local legend before I arrived here but with three cache types celebrating the same landmark it’s worthy of further investigation.
Answers sent to the CO and photo uploaded allowing me to record cache type #6.

With the Geotour coming to and end soon Yvettetb and I decided to go on a road trip to collect Tahi and Rua. Of course I had some puzzles at various places to collect and a few special types were added to the list too.
This was our first day. We had an event in Whangarei to welcome in the new year. This turned into an ftf hunt with all the attendees in a convoy. This was followed by breakfast at one of the groups place. What a fantastic way to start 2023. We then headed off and visited Puhoi, Huntly, Ngāruawahia, Raglan and Hamilton ending our day in Te Awamutu.
An easy virtual always makes my list. I'd been here previously for a cache so I knew exactly where to go. I used to shop at Deka in Whangarei years ago when they were still around. It was a bit tricky staring up at the sign on a bright day to count. Had a laugh when I got your reply to my questions. Thanks for the virtual

It was almost dark when we stopped by the iconic Deka sign in Huntly, and the sign was already lit up. We had no problem identifying the colours, but as for the bolts - we didn't want to miss anything in the dark. Took the required photo, and have sent the answers to the questions off to the CO. Nice to have another Virtual cache, thanks.

Last year, Team SEAC members went on a road trip down to Cambridge to clear out as many of the caches in that town and its surrounding areas. On the way home from that trip, we stopped off in Huntly to do the night cache. After completing the night cache, we vowed to come back to Huntly and grab as many of the caches in that area as we could. Today was that day.Yay, another virtual! It is always nice to get different cache types other than trads. Anyway, we rocked up to the big iconic sign and found out the information that we needed for this cache. The relevant information has been sent to the CO, and the photo is attached to this log.TFTC
Labour Weekend has historically been a minimum 3 day Team SEAC all out adventure so a little while ago I started planning some fun for us. After a walking day yesterday, today was a driving one and more about the numbers and clearing out an area we have had our eyes on for a while. Ended up being a massive day (left home around 8.30am and got home at 1:40am!)....it wasn't called a Mega Mysterious Weekend for nothing. Enjoyed the fun with friends...just like the 'old' times.
There was much discussion around one of the colours here....am sure we got it right in the end though. Getting very confusing with all the different apps with each of us at different stages ha ha...just part of the fun!!
Thanks for the cache

Day 2 of our Labour weekend caching mission, and also happens to be a significant day for me yearly...... Our group decided to head down Huntly way for a good variety of cache types and then head inland and back up to Auckland.....some of use a little jaded from the impromptu high elevation gain hike yesterday, we eased ourselves into search mode.....
Signed is as SEAC to save logbook space and allowing us more time to enjoy the area which surprised us as to how many scenic places are hiding in Huntly....
Thanks to all the CO's for hiding and maintaining caches here.....and to mother nature for the awesome weather we had......

Out with Team Seac for another day of adventures. We did a full day of caching on the Saturday with a long hike! And decided to head down to Huntly for the day. I really enjoyed my time around here, and would like to come back again. Some us finished at 10pm, some finished at 1amish!

Tramyard proposed a road trip around the Waikato to visit the new virtuals and ad labs in the area since our last visit, as well as attending the local 18@18 event. Two others were asked but they were instead attending a CITO in Whangarei, so it was just going to be tramyard and myself.
In total, our road trip was over 500km as we traveled via Mercer, Huntly, Taupiri, Pirongia, Waitomo Caves, and Piopio before turning back towards Cambridge and onto Hamilton for the event before finally heading home to Auckland.
This DEKA sign is truly iconic for Huntly and something that I miss now that we often bypass Huntly. Well, we happened to see this sign twice in one day as we stopped here in the morning to complete the virtual and then again as we stopped in Huntly for dinner on the way home.

This is absolutley iconic sign and we also like the story behind.
We were able to pass our answers in person to COs at the event in Hamilton later today.
Many thanks for setting it up.
Great to see that Huntly has own Virtual cache!
Waikato road trip with Aiden29

Heading home from a day out caching, we detoured through Huntly to check out this iconic sign. Lots of parking near gz, and although the main street of Huntly was busy there was no one close to gz today.

Another nice idea for this iconic Huntley item. Gathered the nearby Trad and the details for this Virtual. T F T C ABCDF4.
Head home day and we have a brunch date with daughter Liv after heading down from Northland early this morning. A couple of stop offs planned to improve my finds on this last '5 day'. Just pesky old 29 Feb to deal to next Leap opportunity.
A long weekend in Northland and a nice catch up with our son and his family. We had 4 days and 3 nights staying at Ngunguru in the works bach and although caching wasn't high on the list we still had a couple of trips out and found a few, thanks to all COs. It's been a couple of months since we last saw little Hayes, our 16tth grandchild, so was good to see how much he'd grown.

We stopped here after completing the Ad Labs in Taupiri. It is certainly an icon for Huntly and the Huntly Power Station..
Great to see this type of iconic sign surviving the sword so to speak.and beingtreated with the respectit deserves..the answers have been sent to the CO..thanks for setting this virtual
We had stopped off here a week ago, but left this for the return trip. At least it wasn't raining today as we have endured some terrible weather up North. Thanks for the virtual ABCDF4.
I felt unfit so a walk up the northern Haks and to get some nearby caches. It has seen better days tftc

With Gap (of Fap and Gap)… In between some of Gap’s jobs. Allowing ourselves to be sidetracked…
Memories… I used to work for Crothalls in the 1980s. I cleaned the DEKA store in Rotorua each weekday morning… It was a good job and I held the position almost until the day the store closed… This sign is definitely a throwback to those days. Only a place like Huntly would keep these memories alive. DEKA would have been one of the town’s best shops in its heyday. Logging with permission - Thanks ABCDF4 and TFTVC.

After grabbing a couple of caches with the CO i thought it would be rude to not collect this on the way home. DEKA was very important a few years ago unfortunately it is no longer here. The was one in Garden Place in central Hamilton. Thank you for the cache.
One of about 6 Huntly caches found, a few waypoints of labs and the deka trad cache of course.
