Logs
2 November 2024 14:22 dalerious and I had such a successful morning at Paradise Falls and now it was time to make our way over to Power's Lookout and try our luck at a line of JA caches that have not had too many visitors since their inception. As usual, we studied the map and had a good idea where to start our walk from once at the parking coordinates. We felt good about attempting these caches as a suggested trailhead was provided for what we thought at the time was a safe decent to a lower level. It wasn't until we reached the rim of the escarpment that we realised that the "access point" was for further down the escarpment. Unfortunately, this made getting down harder than it should have, because we had to spend time trying to find a safe way down. This is the only flaw in what turned out to be a lovely walk to find 2 caches. Lovely if you discount the inch long ants which I am terrified of as I have been stung multiple times in one sitting by those attack freaks! We really wanted to make it to the Multi-cache but because we were not sure if we could exit safely there, which meant we would have to walk back way over to our original drop zone, which was a fair distance away. It is here that I will suggest to JA maybe adding waypoints on where to decend from, which, in my opinion, would promote cachers to come and give these a go, because it is worth it.My criticism here is not meant to hinder visitation. I would love more people to give these a go. I just want to see them attempt them safely. One exit point we chose to get back up, looked alright from the bottom, but soon became almost unreachable for a short statured person as myself; and there was no turning back.Thank you for bringing us here, and we look forward to visiting again to go find the rest .
2 November 2024 2:24pmBloody hard work, but worth it if not just to get to the next one. Last weekend, catnap777 and I cleaned up every cache on McMillans and Paradise Falls Tracks except the one we saved for today. Now, with "Just a touch of Paradise" in the bag too, we headed from there for Powers Escarpment and a couple more T4.5 caches on this, the other side of the King River valley. Well we thought it was tough getting to the top of that escarpment with the view of Paradise Falls. That was peanuts to getting to the bottom of this one. [B)]We took what we thought was the advised access point Northwest of GZ to get down, but with its posted coords appearing to be somewhere at the base of the escarpment, it was difficult to see the best place to lead off from at the top. [8] I think we took a route noone else has taken before earning every bit of this caches T4.5 rating. [8)]The bush bash/rock hop to GZ was also slow going. We knew at this point that we would be lucky to find just one in this string of caches this time here. At GZ, our initial search was fruitless, but fortunately for us, we had downloaded the spoiler pic beforehand and resorted to using it paying off immediately. Cache and contents were found and returned in excellent condition. [^]Since we wanted to check out the other scramble point for a route back up, and the next cache was just a little further on from there, we went on to hunt down our second one at this escarpment. We are so glad we did. That one gets my fav. We eventually took the second scramble point up, but it was the most sketchy free climb we have ever done. If we were coming back here, it would be our prefered access point, but not without dropping a rope down there first and also having a pair of secateurs handy for those couple of blackberry tendrils that had planted themselves so efficiently for maximum effect. TFTC Jamin. How on earth do you find these amazing places?
Back again! This time we knew what was ahead so a little less time stressed. Arrived after a big adventure in the morning already so the legs were a bit weary. Dropped down a really prickly way down the escarpment and made our way over to GZ. Spent about 20mins searching around and then realised there was a spoiler photo which thankfully loaded and in the next 3mins the cache was in hand. Good to finally get the smiley and revisit this amazing place. TFTC
Knew we were in for a bit of an adventure with a Jamin Appleford bush one and an adventure it most certainly was! After the fabulous Event at LWH, weirdobiker and I decided to accompany Ronice88 on her mission to find the Powers Escarpment caches. Luckily Ben came along to do a maintenance run and just did his own thing while we found access routes. Ronice was leading the way and we finally arrived at GZ to hunt for the elusive unfound cache here. Congrats to Ronice on {FTF}and thanks to Jamin for luring me to go exploring non path areas.regardskbucky
{FTF} 18+ months after publication which seems extraordinary given this is hugely fabulous and impressive destination, and is not that daunting a descent down to the correct level where a little magic awaits. Be prepared to wander carefully in awe of the cliffs and secret overhangs and imagine Harry Powers hanging out here too. This deserves a 5 star rating, and 5 X hip hip hoorays to the CO for placing the cache and luring us here, and a FAVE allocated for all that. I've had my eye on this series for awhile and finally the day arrived where the mission could be realised - solo or not. After the 'fishin attack event" at Lake WH weirdobiker and kbucky who couldn't resist a micro adventure were keen to join me and then the affable CO Ben fortuitously "tagged along" too - to do a maintenance run. As it turned out, and that is another story, travelling with others, carrying a first aid kit and PBD and having the competence to extricate yourself has a lot going for it. A memorable day was had, and three names were added to the log book. TFTC and the FUN.
Ronice88 had been wanting to collect this cache for a while and after spending a night in Whitfield so that we could canoe to collect the Lake William Hovell series and also attend an event, kbucky and myself decided to join Ronice88 on her quest. It was fortunate that the CO also joined us as this was a little bit more than a 'scramble' over some rocks to get to this one. The scenery was breathtaking with the overhanging rocks, moss which was growing happily where the water dripped down the escarpment. In the end our names were all added to the log and this is one of those caches that I will always remember collecting for more reasons than one.
Not today. First one and a dnf too. To be fair we didn't spend much time here with the heaps of spots to look and a huge journey ahead of us. Definitely will be back very soon
Day 1
This was the preferred abseiling point. Plenty of big trees to anchor off.
The 50m rope reaches to the bottom.
A descent where your feet are mostly on rocks.
The one that was missing.
Treasure!
Up, down, hours of searching over the next few visits and setups and abseiling provided nothing.
The spoiler picture was not taken nearby was the conclusion.
Are the access area possibly mixed up?
After long days of bushbashing in steep wooded country where only the brave would venture, this has tested the bananas. Raining most days, avoiding flooded roads to get here and at one stage even the Hume Hwy was cut.
This has been a challenging test.
But thoroughly worthwhile.
To discover what Harry Powers saw in this place.
