3rd time lucky, and i brought my good luck charm along, Madrabbitoh. Back in the area, with Mad to collect all the caches in this vicinity. This was the only one i had not found. Had had discussions with previous finders, trying to determine which spot was THE spot, but this just confused me even more. I looked at the other location, and determined that it could not be that one, from reading other logs. So we found a way into the thick lantana and follwed a bit of a thinner trail, chasing the arrow on my phone. I found some spots i had searched before, but my phone took me further north today, and i spotted it straight away. What a 5 second rush that is, so much relief to have finally found it. TFTC.

Again. Lantana just too much. Call in a napalm strike. T should be higher just for the lantana.

02-Jan-22
Finally found this one! Third time is the charm apparently. A nice big container eventually in hand once the blasted lantana negotiated. On the way out went up the hill to the railway and walked along that for a way till could get back to a track.

Picked up *The Hademobile* this morning after a big service. So of course I need to test it to make sure everything is back to working in tip top condition...
So decided on a 100min+ drive to Maitland - as you do.

I'd noticed the caches placed at the Walka Waterworks. Looks like a nice few hours out. Pity a few of them are Missing in Action - someone needs to give a hurry up to that slow boat from China... One was muggle central and one I just didn't try as I felt too conspicuous.

Got twenty three including a Multi and a Virtual. And then there's the long drive home in the dark... why does that truck matching my speed on the motorway have one headlight and no tail lights?
###END OF CUT AND PASTE SECTION###
Like the last seeker I thought one area likely, but quite overgrown. Not quite willing to commit without checking I have the exact coords.

16-Apr-21
Unsure if we had the correct set of coordinates. We had a bit of a look but the area was so overgrown with lantana and we were both getting badly scratched so we aborted as the rain started.

16-Jan-21
Solved the coords before coming to Maitland but with a few DNF’s I reached out to a prev finder to double check my coords. I had them right so today, after parkrun, we walked round to GZ. It was very overgrown in the area and I had to get on my hands and knees and crawl through the weeds/trees/bushes. Thankfully I was able to spot the right area quickly and found the cache! Added our names and crawled back out. Very glad to get this old cache, tftc SteelRat

02-Jan-21
I must have misunderstood something or was not confident enough to follow through. I had a couple of candidates for GZ and checked both without success one was off in the thick bushes and nothing at the other. Both well within 161m from others but that would not be uncommon for an oldie like this.

11-Nov-20
Attempt number two also failed. Figured out where I had gone wrong before and got 2 sets co-ordinates one of which seemed most likely, But it was not to be. Nothing at either site (except lantana of course).

08-Oct-20
Easy to find the two way points. Getting through some of the weeds and sticks is much harder. TFTC

Well 2020 has been a relatively slow year on the caching front due to COVID-19. If it wasn't for that it would have been a trip to the USA and Geocaching's 20th year celebrations.

However the crew got back together and The Rats, Hoojar and I teamed up for a few days caching up around the Hunter area. First it was to finish off some of the older OZGM series caches then up into the Watagans for more. Most of Saturday was spent tackling the great Dogs Head Trail then on Sunday it was down into Newcastle city for some great caches.

This was another find on our trip. Glad we were able to track this quite old cache down!

TFTC!

26-Sep-20
COVID has really put a dampener on this year’s caching ability, but it hasn't stopped my enthusiasm to get out and find a cache whenever possible. So, it was with excitement that I was keen to catch up with Steeba and Hoojar for our first caching weekend of the year. Big Grin

We targeted a number of powertrails in the Central Coast and Hunter region over our 3-day caching frenzy. The weekend threw up a bit of everything, including a plethora of finds, mountain bush bashing, coastal caching, weather that varied from beautiful to bizarre, sleeping under the stars, some close calls with the flora and fauna, lovely local hospitality and most of all, a great time away with my mates”.

Thanks to all the C.O’s for placing and maintaining their caches for us to find. Apologises for the generic log but with so many finds I couldn’t personalise every one of them. Wink

After a chilly night and another early start we tackled our biggest day, the “Dog’s Head” trail north of Maitland saw us meandering through the picturesque countryside. It was here we found some cleverly crafted containers which added to a great day. By time nightfall we’d met up with Big Matt & MV for a lovely meal at the Paterson Hotel.

This was a bonus find as we scoured the area in search of caches.
Thanks Smile

26-Sep-20
With restrictions starting to ease in our Covid World, it was decided that 2020 caching really need to kick up a gear, and so a plan was set in motion for The Rats, Steeba and myself to head to the Newcastle and Hunter region. There were a few trails, power trails, and Lab Caches that would be hitting our radars, along with a milestone for The Rats. We headed off on Thursday evening and turned for jome on Sunday afternoon. A wonderful long weekend was had, and our cache finds topped 450 for the trip. All in all it was a great success.

The caches were excellent. Some indeed were amazing, and favourite points have been awarded. The company, as always, was faultless. The weather was varied. We had sun, rain, wind, colder, warm, more wind... A bit of everything! We managed to find a few nice spots to camp, and enjoyed the company of Big Matt and Marcus Vitruvius for dinner at a local establishment on Saturday evening.

Please forgive the boiler-plate log, I assure you it is no reflection on the caching experience of our few days away. Thank you to all cache owners for their hides.

Cheers

Wow didn't know this area existed what a lovely spot. I parked about 600m away later in the afternoon and enjoyed a very scenic walk in. Down to the final 30m or so and I managed to follow all the correct rabbit trails to help dodge the dense lantana until full circle brought me to a very nicely done GZ. After SL/ collecting info and replacing the cache as found, I could see the much better way in/ out. This is a classic and gets my FP for the day. TFTC and puzzle/ multi, SteelRat.

I joined a trip to Maitland with Aquilus1, dty73, Tankengine, Barb2e, Kitty Katch & Joolay. The weekends main game was to do the dogs head series, but along the way we did some old caches around Sydney and did as many Maitland caches as time allowed. The return journey was via some old caches and some challenges that may or may not be met one day.

Day 3's target was a trip to Frying Pan. The trip was great and the caches along the way and there lots of fun. I was very disappointed at just how many people were camping in a spot like this, I cannot see how it could be enjoyed. The afternoon was finished in Maitland with the Walka Lake Adventure Lab, a fun diversion.

Thanks for the cache SteelRat

A caching trip away with Kittykatch, Joolay, Aquilus1, Tankengine, Barb2e & Albida33 - the Capital Crunchers Gang!!

We came by here to do this series, pick up a couple of interesting other ones and do the Adventure Lab. It was a pretty busy area with many families and groups celebrating. But the walk around was lovely and I wish we could have been able to finish the rest in the series, but we were off to the other side of town. Gives us a reason to come back again I guess ; )

Gotta love an old cache. And one with a bit of effort required. I loved the movie, but I couldn't remember the answer so had to watch it again - oh well ; ) A nice quick find at GZ then off again. Tftc SteelRat!!!

An oldie like this caught the attention and we just made it through the gates with 30 minutes to spare. Nice walk through to the cache, this hidey hole has stood the time. Out the gate at 4.59pm with the guy holding the gate and padlock... with a dozen cars still down in the car park! Thanks for the cache, loved this area here.

Trip details...
With GreyHams we continued onwards with our NSW counties trip, started as a need to collect a few to make up some missing numbers to qualify for a challenge... ended that we wanted ALL. OF. THEM!!! This wasn't the planned trip we thought was next but with no flights it was our plan B and still a needed one any way.

The focus was on the 7 counties around the Hunter region, however I did have 11 North Sydney counties I was keen to collect. GreyHams was gracious enough to help me get them despite having them already. He also was the best navigator to assist me to drive through the crazy of Sydney traffic! Planner, Navigator, finder, signer... yep, he does it all!!!

This trip was about quality, counties, oldies, sizes, interesting, type. If your cache made it to our list then it was one of these. We found three 2000 caches and despite living so close I finally found Lane Cove, my first Australian 2000 cache and also my 20th.

Sydney caching took its toll and the day got away from us. We made the move to return to Hornsby and luckily scored the last 2 rooms, as we often do! Placed us well though to continue with a few counties close by before continuing on to the start of the needed 7 around the Hunter way. Kurri Kurri murals also led to a great lunch at the local chippery, the fish burger was just the thing! It has to be said that the bats up this way are of some impressive size, good enough to be off the roads before night fall and saw us stopping in Dungog for the night.

Dungog was chosen as it was close to 'frying pan' an awesome 2000 cache in a stunning location for the next morning. It turning out to be a great place which was a massive bonus. Again we managed to last two rooms upstairs at the local Hotel. Great priced rooms, great food and super convenient. Beautiful countryside around this quaint town and the local bakery we stopped at for breakfast is a must.

Rain the last morning didn't slow us too much, even made for the trip out to Frying pan in the morning as a more beautiful experience with everything all wet. Loved the evidence of the old logging history as we made our way through the area and then it was time to head back to home. Never a direct route though it was very full and enjoyable day as we continued through to the last of the caches we had time for along the way.

Many thanks for you cache that led us on our journey, another counties trip ticked off but another great trip it was!

07-Jun-20
Aquilus1 and myself have been itching to finish the task we gave ourselves a year back of completing the counties of NSW... ALL. OF. THEM. So, while we have been long planning our next flight into Armidale with a big loop, the lockdown then Qantas cutting back flights we had to bring forward what was always planned to be the last trip forward.

As always on these county trips we have one eye on lots of little smaller targets, such as Ausmer, sizes, oldies in general and cool types. If you are reading this log, then this cache made the grade in some way.

We drove from Canberra through Sydney, collecting the 1 counties Aquilus1 needed there before heading on to the Hunter region where 7 counties awaited us.

Originally the plan had been to try to get to Lake Mac or Newcastle on the first day, but Sydney caching is just so slow with the traffic and crap roads, so in the end after an aborted night cache off the M1 (we forgot to bring a TV remote!!) we turned around and went back to Hornsby as there were motels down there with 2 vacancies.... as always, we got the last 2 rooms!

The second day actually got us further than we expected, 50m into Muswellbrook before turning around and getting to Dungog (what an Aussie name... love it), we managed to ring ahead and secure the last 2 rooms (again!) for $55 each. While normally you get what you pay for I had the best night sleep, and its hard to beat having dinner, then drinks, then going upstairs to sleep... that works! The local bakery also had a specialty of cheese & bacon topped sausage rolls (and I mean LOTS of cheese & bacon) so, when in Rome, we sampled this and it was as great and slimming as it sounds.

The highlight of the trip would be the cache 'Frying Pan', the oldest container cache in Australia and such a beautiful spot...love white buckets buried in the ground!

After that it was essentially just turning around and heading back to Canberra, with a slight detour to grab Sydney Geocache Relocated. All in all, three year 2000 caches, three or four year 2001 and a sprinkling of 2002 to 2006 here and there. Great trip, leaves us with 106 NSW counties ticked off, just one trip left to complete NSW, hurry up Qantas and start flying again.

Much easier to locate on the daylight! But if a crazy adventure - thanks for the challenge.

How can one post a dnf when one does not know where the cache should be. I had completed the series and the others in the area and left this one as extra steps for the day as i figured it would be a distance away. Checked both locations but could not find the hint. Could not find the tree a previous finder was standing in front of either. Disappointed really.

TRUE LIES

What a great movie title eh? I do like Arnie but also Jamie Lee Curtis (how good was she in "A Fish Called Wanda"?)

I checked out one location first and found myself in a spikey plant fun-house, didn't seem a great spot for a cache. Looked at the map and thought it must be the other place. Checked out the locations there, my hopes boosted by a recent photo, lots of spikey plants there too, but no luck. Had a further look though the logs and saw something that made me head back to the first place I went to. Spotted GZ and soon had the cache in hand. Well, I say "soon" but this whole process took quite a while, battling spikey flora and almost giving up. But I wanted to find this cache to fill a Jasmer gap. And this IS an OLD cache.

Cobwebs on the cache. Wiped them off, opened the cache up to find lots of treasure. Took nothing, left The Joker trackable (well Arnie was in that apparently terrible "Batman & Robin" film), signed log and replaced as found. Didn't get any of the extra info for the Rats' other caches Sad But a great old cache, when a cache is hard to find it just makes the actual find so much sweeter.

So, truth and lies... If someone posts a picture suggesting they're near this cache, is it true or is it a lie? That rule about caches always being over 161m away from each other ... always true - or not? HMMM. If you see a sign suggesting you are in the vicinity of a cache, can you trust it or should you stay away? Cheers, and TFTC!

This was the last of three 2002 Caches that was all I did today.

I thought I’d made a good guess of the maths and found it at the first of two likely options. The lantana has already grown back!?!

Information collected. Can I solve the final tomorrow as I’m staying nearby.

After coming here 2 years ago for a wedding and seeing a cache based on true lies (a film i absolutely love), i was very keen to get it. However i didn't have time to get it because of the wedding i was attending. Finally came back today and headed to both coordinates. Started to panic at the second set because i was worried i wouldn't find it, but as i kept looking i found it. TFTC!!!! That's 2/4 of the rat series done! #1482

Had a walk around Walka this arvo, with many Mothers in tow for Mother's Day.
Took the opportunity to do a cache check and found it whole and healthy, but with the area a lot more overgrown than memory would suggest.
Cache on!

It was a great time to explore the area during the OZ Geomuster 2018 and find some caches. Really enjoyed the experience of caching in a new part of the world with some new as well as old friends.

Failed to get here before closing on Thursday so back again to claim this find.

01-Apr-18
Our main reason for being in the area was to find Frying Pan, with that out of the way we relaxed and enjoyed a few caches on the way back to the muster.
I had sussed this cache out from home and with a 50/50 chance had made a decision which coordinates the cache would be at. Happy to say I was correct. Big Grin
My usual caching buddy was really keen to find this because of the cache name and the CO's name too.
Found with Tassie Trekkers and stainless steel rat.

Now this cache first came to my attention while looking for calendar month fillers on project GC, I didnt even read the name to start with I was just looking at the date and location.

I clicked on the link and only then bothered to read the name and then discovered it was placed by a fellow Rat so even if it was not a date I needed it was going on the growing todo list!

I solved the bit of a puzzle from home before leaving Tassie for the Mega and along with Goose of GooseandEgg and TassieTrekers we walk to one of the options and after a bit of a bash the cache was found in good condition.

Thanks so much for putting the cache out so long ago 'brother' SteelRat

Today was the day to tackle the Frying Pan cache to fill in our calendar. With gooseandegg and SSR we headed off to the Frying Pan. We travelled through the country side and up into the forest enjoying panoramic views of the area.

While heading back from the area we found a variety of hides and this was one of them. After working out where the final may be we chose the correct co-ords first up, a team effort.

Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for our enjoyment.

An easy find today but a little difficult to get to because of all the dense bush surrounding the cache. Found shortly after getting 'Behind the scenes2'. Noted the numbers, now just one more Riddle of the Rat cache to find before we can get to the final of the series. TFTC!

Worked out puzzle, but couldn't find cache at any coordinates we worked out. A LOT of lantana at probable GZ. Might have to get a yay/nay from someone in the know before going back and trying again!

I had been visiting the area finding caches to fill my missing hidden date grid and I decided to make this cache my final cache of the day so I could work on solving the final , I had the two choices on paper but cachly wouldn't let me add them for some reason lucky i had my gps . My first choice was wrong so i set of to the second and it was a quick find of the well hidden cache. Thanks for the cache SteelRat tnln sl

While caching around the lake we decided to try our luck with this multi. Thinking we had the correct age we came up with some coordinates that looked feasible. Unfortunately we had zero luck finding the cache until doing a PAF. So with some lantana scrambling we found the cache in its well secluded hiding spot.
Thanks very much for the maintaining this historic cache.

#199 @ 11:25AM. Found on this windy, rainy yet quite humid day with the geoson. Headed out to find this as this series is on my puzzle queue and coming up to 200 finds I think its a worthy series as opposed to a mint tin. Arrived at the most likely GZ today and initially had trouble locating the cache. After about 10mins I just put down the GPS and used my geosenses. Ahh, yeah, thats were I would put it also Smile. SL TNLN and Thansk for the cache and puzzle. Maybe try and hit T2 this arvo with the rest of my geofamily. Cheers, moto501

Find #725 - also 'regular' sized cache #100
Off for some Father's Day caching today, we decided to do a mixed bag of caches around Maitland. We augmented the team today with Mum737, so we had *much* better rations and more eyes to search....
We ended up with 7 finds for the day, not bad considering some significant walking (carrying) with our nearly 4 year old. Great caches around here, we've awarded over 50% of them FPs....
Last one for the day as it turned out....
I solved this last night, at least I thought I did, ran the two iterations and came up with two coordinates, one along the walking track at the lake, the other 15km away. How this didn't strike me as odd, given what we were doing to the coordinates, evades me, I'm usually pretty good at spotting errors of that sort of magnitude! Anyway, we poked around in the lantana as other logs indicated, and found nothing.... checked other areas around 'GZ' - nothing.... then it dawned, how could adjusting the decimal put us 15km away??? Redid the calcs, and checked my alternate coords - oh, 10 minutes of longitude will give us 15km, quite easily! Off to the proper GZ, a much more secluded spot, and found the generously sized, nicely stocked cache within minutes.... I did get scratched to blazes by the lantana though..... TFTC SteelRat

Tried the wrong spot at first then decided to give the other co ords a go and after a short crawl through the Lantana we had the cache. We took a pig and left a few toys.

Just reading through old logs and the pig we took today was placed in this cache 12 years ago! There's also still a clown in there that has been there 10 years.

This is the third riddle of the rat cache i have found. 9194 + 1032 = 10226. Found during a visit to the Maitland region for a long weekend with ACBC66 and AwesomeL.

I planned to walk around the Walka Reserve and lake today and find all the local caches. With both of my calculated GZs for this one in the GPS I tried the first with no luck but then came up with the goods at the second - Nice ! Signed, returned, and it was off to the next one !

Thanks SteelRat !

TFTC!!! Had a few hours spare this morning so decided to go & grab this one, as it is one we can't do at night & we generally go geocaching at night. Lovely walk. Got to the 1st set of co-ords & thought we better check them both in case & luckily found it at the other co-ords. Thanks for the puzzle & the walk around the water on a lovely day. Can't wait to finish the series =)

As promised I came back. After finding a nearby cache, I thought I should go check on this one, and get the numbers for the final. The only thing I had on me to replace the swap I'd taken last time was a little torch, with new batteries! The cache is still in excellent condition, with only a little of the paint coming off. With no coordinates in the GSPr, it was harder to spot then last time, due to new growth in the area.

Drove out to Walka Water works this morning to pick up the caches I still had to get here.
I have had this one solved for a long time now and now was the day after walking around the long way getting caches as I went this was the next one. After searching around in the scrub for the wrong location for a while came to this one and knew it was the one from a distance.
Thanks SteelRat for the cache and the whole series that's 2 down now.

I loved this cache!
Maybe it was the location.
(I love this reserve)
maybe it was the puzzle.
(Found it in the third spot)
(the second was painful = fun)
Maybe it was the decent sized container.
Maybe it was the well stocked and verity of the container.
(so much so I couldn't get the lid on and the silica gel bag ripped. Sorry.)
(I had to take the submersible light to close it)
I was so excited about the cache I forgot to write down the clue.
(I'll be back for some other caches in the area anyway,
to write down the clue and put something in there)
Favorite point because of all of it!

It was a 50/50 chance which location this would be at and lucky enough we picked the right one first. Spent most of our time trying to put everything back in the box.

I have had this on my todo list for a very long time and finally had a crack at it today and was rewarded with an epic adventure with potsnputts and BP jrn, and a FTF of the reloaded cache.
our initial approach was by the most obvious route unfortunately the gates shut at 5pm and we had started our search at 16:30, so we about turned and headed to an alternative launching point..... we finally arrived at GZ just as the sun was setting after a brief search we located the prize and with the obligatory looting and log signing complete we double timed it back in the fading light.\

took : dude in car
Left : key ring torch

thanks for the cache Steel Rat

August 4 - Cache 4

What a fabulous cache, full of goodies for every cacher's want. SteelRat you have done a great job on this one.

Found with Burning Possum who can take full credit for solving the riddle.

TN L LED Torch which was in keeping with the high standard of swaps already in the box.

Having a Mother's Day picnic at the Water Works, I took the opportunity to do some much needed maintenance on this cache.

The old log book was still in good condition, but the rest was looking pretty sorry after a decade in the bush, so the whole thing has been upgraded.

New book, new container, new goodies to pillage, same location.

Cheers,
SteelRat.

Found it while looking for something else. Actually found the black stump and thought it looked familiar! Cache was a little water logged but log book ok, container has one hinge broken. Could do with some maintenance.

Had a quick look, but either my calcs are wrong or the area is now overgrown. Will recheck and retry.

Darn, the only bit of the movie we don't remember! A bit of guess work by deduction and straight to the cache. TFTC SteelRat.

1055. Found with Relish64. We were in Maitland for the weekend for a wedding, so we headed here this morning, after the reception the night before, to get some fresh air before making the drive back to Canberra.
Had this one on the list of "to do" and eliminated one of the possibilities after a previous find of another cache.
A quick find, log signed and off to the next one. Little did I know I would have to return here after losing the car key close to GZ.
Thanks SteelRat for the cache.

I really didn't want to watch True Lies again, but thanks to online scripts I soon had this one figured. After a nice walk we saw where this cache would be. Thanks for a good puzzle and hide, that's one in the series.

Reperio at 1420. One of my favourite Arnie movies, and enjoyed watching it again. Today I was out and about with Darwinian enjoying a walk around the area, and this one was on our way. Nice area, and another riddle cache done.

Gratias.
