Earth Home
New Hampshire, USA
Ever since being in middle school, Mr. Seeker has been fascinated with alternate energy sources for homes. As a result, earth homes have always been especially interesting. We've been looking for earth homes in New Hampshire sporadically over the last year and a half since we became aware of locationless caches, but had not located one yet, even though we have had leads on private earth homes from time to time. Now that all locationless caches will be archived at the end of 2005, it appears that we will never be able to log a find for this cache.
We're sorry to see this locationless cache archived. Even though we haven't logged a find for this cache, it has provided us with some interesting research. We wanted to post this note to publicly thank the cache owner for this locationless cache. Thanks for your work in having maintained this cache.

We've never done locationless caches, but now that they're all about to be archived, they suddenly became very cool to us, and we wanted to get one in the bag before it was too late. Since we were coming out to Jen's hometown of Ashland, Kansas, we looked for one we could log there, and this one stood out. Jen says there are a bunch of these in western Kansas -- this one's right in town, just a few blocks from her mom's place. When she lived in Ashland, it didn't look so nice as it does now -- It had a flat roof, and no skylight. So, there's been some underground home improvement here.
Thanks for the cache!

I found this earth house on RT 23 outside of Mohawk, NY. Could only get the front because of private property.
Here is proof that this is not just a modern idea! This in ground home is in Lubbock, TX and is from 1888.

Tracker actually lived in an earth home for over 20 years, but it was already logged, so we found another home. This one is in Missoula, Montana.
Braved a heavy snowstorm to log this in-ground house built into the side of a hill in North Salt Lake, Utah, USA. Only the front of the house protrudes from the hill. Thanks for a fun one.
This house is located in Laguna Beach, Southern California, USA and was built into the ground in order not to disturb the surroundings. TFTC.

In the Beiras the typical houses are made from granitic stones, this makes them be cooler in the summer and hotter in the winter. This one is partialy under the earth.

I have known about this earth home for many years.I Finally got down to take some pictures. It is located on Middle Rd. in Newbury, MA. Two sides and the roof are completely under ground. It has Southern exposure and the front door faces West. The first picture shows the house from the Northeast. All you can see is a hill with vents coming out of it. The second picture is towards the front door.
This restaurant, the Salt Cellar, has been around for at least 30 years. It is built almost entirely underground except for the visible entrance at the top.
This is an energy efficient pool built in the earth in Edmonton Alberta... the windows allow it to act as a greenhouse as well... Thanks for the great LC!

100 W and Park Street in LaPorte, Indiana is the best address I can give you on this earth home. I only have a purloined pic from the neighbor's property. I would love to see what it looks like from the lake! I had lived in this town more than 20 yrs before I noticed this one. Glad the leaves have fallen so I could log it before it's archived.

Dr K Swanson built the first earth home in Stillwater County. This one is located by the cemetary in Columbus Montana. It use to be in a cow pasture but is now surrounded by a subdivision full of energy guzzling houses. It is also for sale. Jitterbug and Horseman
This is in Evergreen Colorado. It was made to look a lot like the other houses in the neighborhood, but notice the solar panels, and the view from the back shows it bermed with earth.
This is some kind of underground building across from a Post Office in Denver, CO.

I've driven by this earth home many times (I live nearby). Today when we took the pictures, a pickup truck was parked on top of it (I'm assuming it was the owner's truck). We submitted both the picture (with me & my GPS) in front, and a picture of the pickup on top (from the road on the hill behind the house).
Found this home while driving east on Scenic Highway 412 in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. Right in the middle of town.
We found this Earth home in Catalonia, Spain.

According to the interpretive sign, this was an emergency home and storage location at the Hornbeck House, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Florissant, Colorado. Aidele Hornbeck lived there with her 4 children from 1874-1899. Vort.
Originally Chart House, Rancho Mirage, CA
The Chart House lies aside Highway 111 in the City of Rancho Mirage. We were in town to reconnoiter the area, check out the Mid-Century Modern architecture and geocache a little, of course.
According to the Desert Modernism Web site, the Chart House is one of the most organic structures in America and is a prime example of the long out of vogue 70s style of earth-sheltered building.

This house has fascinated me since I was a kid. I always thought it was kind of cool. House is located in Saulnierville, NS.
Fox Cave is a home built out of the side of a cliff. It's private property so the Geo-Ranger did not venture closer than the highway. The highway is I-70 between Ruidoso and Roswell, New Mexico. The elevation is 6046 feet.

This earth house is trully built of earth. It is made of adobe which is a mixture of sand and clay and fortified with a little staw. This house is located in El Rancho de Las Golondrinas south of Santa Fe, New Mexico and was the last overnight stop on the Camino Real from Mexico City to Santa Fe in the 1700's.
We're very happy that we were able to find some earth homes to claim before this locationless cache gets converted to a Waymarking site. The Jemez Mountains in New Mexico are of volcanic origin. In the area aroubd Bandolier National Monument, one early, massive eruption put down a thick layer of ash, which over the years was compacted into a soft rock, called tufa. Between about 1100 and the mid-1500's, the Anasazi Indians built some of their houses into the sides of the cliff faces in Frijoles Canyon and other canyons in the area. The underground homes we are claiming are not in the National Monument, but are along NM Route 4 between the entrance to the Monument and White Rock. The photos show a distant view in which quite a few of the dwellings can be seen, closer views of several of them, and a few close-ups - and of course a picture with GPS.
Here is an "earth home" in the Marchfeld, Lower Austria. Forgive me for turning the wrong button on the gps.

Found this incredible home in Caribou, Maine while on a weekend cache trip. Very interesting design, I thought. Thanks for the find!
This is an underground house that I used to live by in LaVerkin, UT. There are 3 floors underground with only two small rooms above ground. Since its completion about 1985, a garage has been added. The underground portion is shaped like a pyramid for added support. During its construction I used to play hide and seek on the bottom three floors.
The Marin County jail provides temporary underground housing for over 300 people. It is built into a hill in the north end of the civic center (near North San Pedro Road, San Rafael, California). It was placed underground in part so that it would not detract from the rest of the buildings that were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Skylights provide the required sunlight.
This house is located 18 Miles south of Livinston MT. It is surrounded by earth on 3 sides and the windows all facing south.
This "partially submerged" earth house is near St. Paul's, Ontario. It has 2 levels, one being under the ground (the ground built up around it). The southwest wall is all glass, to allow natural light in to both levels. The roof on the other side is covered with piping to solar heat water.
We spotted this house during a geocaching day in June, but circumstances prevented us from returning for the photo until today. The house is located just north of Cynthiana, Indiana. We don't know who lives here, but the house certainly motivates the mind toward the advantages of this type of living. TFTC

High Desert Museum
Bend, OR
Home of the Otter Family. The home is totally hidden from sight and only the entrance and the windows can be seen.
The museum is totally awesome and is worth a trip. Beside breath taking indoor exhibits it features a great number of outdoor attractions, including a running saw mill and birds of prey.
And here some more about the museum:
Donald M. Kerr, a native of Portland, Oregon, founded The High Desert Museum out of a passion for natural history that began when he raised a wolf cub for his high school biology class. This experience inspired his lifelong interest in environmental issues and the lives of predatory animals. Out of the belief that we can make well-informed decisions if we understand all sides of an issue, he envisioned a new kind of museum that would show the close connections between people and their environment.
"I've raised a wolf and two great horned owls," Kerr said. "I've been lucky to have these experiences that aren't possible for most people. I wanted to bring others closer to nature, to experience it, to learn to maintain it."
Kerr's dream became a reality through the creation of the Western Natural History Institute in 1974, and its evolution into The Oregon High Desert Museum, which opened in Bend in 1982. To give it a greater regional role, the name became The High Desert Museum. Today, the Museum remains true to his guiding principle that education and experience are the basis for thoughtful decisions.
