Called in to make the observations on this interesting geological feature that I normally would not have even noticed. Had heard about its intriguing hoax from the CO himself, so I was keen to check it out. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, as I meandered around the rock working out its geological composition. Thanks for the earthcache e.gregory1!
hi e.gregory1, thanks for the cache.I drive past this 'ere so called 'meteorite' at least twice most days, but never stopped before.Today I did stop, safely crossed the road, checked out the rock, too the required pic, and managed to cross back over safely to the car.Answers sent to the CO.Pic included below.Cheers,EPs
TFTC JENPETEH, The H,s , South Africans living in Australia GeoCaching our way around the globe and loving it Thanks for this cache, we drive past here regularly and would never have stopped had it not been for GeoCache and Earth Cache day!!
While I have driven past here on numerous occasions I was not aware of this rock or its history so this Earth Cache has been an interesting lesson to complete and in my opinion worthy of a favourite. Answers have been sent to the CO.
Today we visited the site of the so-called "Margate Meteorite". Answers to the questions have been forwarded to the CO. The required photo has been included with this log. Thanks e.gregory1 for an interesting earthcache.
I've never know this was here despite the fact that I must have driven past thousands of times.I parked across the road at the spot we have our monthly quiz night and I had to wait for some time to make the dash across. I had quite a long look and took photosGiven my teenage idea was that I would be a geologist (before I met a programmable calculator and found my true calling!), and that I went on to study science at Uni, it's embarrassing how little I actually know or understand about geology. Thanks!
Stopped at this one at long last and had a look round to help collect all the answers needed to log this EarthCache, answers sent and approved by the CO.The best caches I have found so far are:-Sentimental [Moorgreen P3:1, Penny Pincher](http://coord.info/GC32Z5B) By [Sven&Cup](http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?A=6596795)Traditional [Hanging Around in Toorak](http://coord.info/GC62KAP) By [bobthebuilder_123](http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?A=586681)Multi [Gawler Fort Knox](https://coord.info/GC5T0W1) By [**JEM**](http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?A=11449141)Unknown [Men In Black Holes](http://coord.info/GC1DVB0) By [SG-3](http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?A=918045) Letterbox [Rolf's Letterbox](http://coord.info/GC5NCYM) By [membsec](http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?A=5318842)Earthcache [Alum Cliffs and Gorge](https://coord.info/GC5KVHA) By [jandalfan](http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?A=2409043)Visit the [Geocaching Tasmania Facebook group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/318455407771/)
Well after driving past this for so many years, we now had a reason to stop. SSR maneuvered so as to keep the driveway clear and we studied the formation. I'd read the article about the prank years ago and had a good laugh. How many people accepted that as real? For as long as I can remember I was taught it was volcanic and came from Mt Wellington.I often shy away from earthcaches as I feel my answers are always inadequate - especially when colour is involved!Anyway answers sent to CO so he can see my inadequacy first hand Thanks again e.gregory1
Ventured out today to grab a couple of different caches, a puzzle a multi an old trad and this EC.
Stopped at recommended parking and tools some pictures and gathered information. An interesting EC that taught me about something I had never heard of before, my first EC about breccia.
Thanks e.gregory1 for The 'Margate Meteorite'

Hello e.gregory1 thank you for the cache
I wanted to find an Earth Cache to day.
I remember coming to this place 40 odd years ago.
When there was a plaque here and an information board and the place looked nice.
Now it's a local rubbish dump.

Had a time where lady membsec was in at an appointment so came out here. Had just arrived when an older lady appeared from the house driveway and came over to chat about their unique structure. She was pretty clued up on it and showed concern that the signage had now all disappeared and that the rock was vulnerable to ongoing road widening in the area. i agree - it is unique and must be protected - where are the Uni Geologists when you need them?
Great to ponder the wonders of geological history and the incredible effects of volcanic eruption. Thanks for identifying it for us.

Mr EBC noticed there was an earthcache out this way when he was deciding what direction he’d point the car in today. He knows I like an earthcache and he knows a Happy wife brings him peace! So we found ourselves standing on the side of the road waiting patiently for a break in what felt like a constant stream of traffic….eventually we got close to the feature in question…while the Chief took photos and looked for evidence of any extraterrestrial activity I tried to make sense of what I had read compared to what I could see in front of me while ignoring the crazy commentary of not being able to find ET’s phone. Thanks for setting this earthcache e.gregory1.
Out and about to southern for few caches.. stop to get lovely warm latte , very interesting about it, answers sent to CO then permitted to approved…

What an interesting spot that I was not aware of. Thanks for pointing it out. Answers sent to CO.
On a Journey down to Margate to visit the tip shop for possible caching supplies, I called by this newish earthcache. Cool place for a cache and great back story

We were in Margate today with some spare time, so we decided to use it to do some caching. A good spot for an EC, answers sent to the CO.
Thanks for the EarthCache e.gregory1!
Thanks for the EarthCache e.gregory1!
I used to drive past here every day for work for a few years. I still drive past regularly. Had looked at the "meteorite" many times, stopped and taken photos, read the history, etc. Was great to see this come up as an earth cache. Nice sunny day today out caching with xxDouDouxx and stopped here to tick it off the list. Thanks for a great earth cache e.gregory1.
That was a fun cache! Bit of some brain work going for S_38 and me, but it’s always interesting to look at a feature you have seen so many times, but from now on, it will never be the same. Photo added to S_38 log. Thanks!
Thanks for the earthcache e.gregory1.
Ah, memories of Tuesday morning geology excursions in Yr 11 Geology! Geology was my favourite class in Yr 11 (back in the 1980s).
It was a beautiful sunny autumn day today, and so the GeoGSP's and I headed out for a drive. I was keen to stop here and collect the info required for this cache. Looks like some weeding has occurred around GZ which makes it a bit easier to get up close to have a look.
Answers sent to the CO, and photo attached.

Today my darling wife came for a ride, and so did AndyAnd42 on the back with me.
We went down via Sandy Bay, Taroona, Bonnet Hill, Tinderbox, stopping at Pierson's Point where I found a commemorative stone unveiled by a former Deputy Prime Minister (and Defense Minister), whose lawns I used to mow as a teenager. A different defence minister was my second cousin. These anecdotes were received with disinterest - "and then I tied an onion to my belt, as was the style of the time". And we pressed on to another detour down Ferguson Ave (i had recently received a "post card" from the tinderbox marine reserve), and via Howden to the Margate Meteorite EarthCache that I'd seen published earlier this week. Darling wife was unimpressed about the gravel road en route, but we'll have to get used to it if we're going to Finke or Birdsville in a couple of years.
At GZ I don't recall having seen this sign before, but I do vaguely remember there being a geological feature further up near the bus stop (that seems to no longer be there) near either Fehres or Maddocks Rd.
Someone at the cottage was seemingly brush cutting, and some of the blackberry and fennel was freshly trimmed allowing for easier access. Anyway it seems I've driven past this possibly hundreds of times without a second thought - being more interested in the nearby North West Bay River, and in more recent times being reminded about the nearby from passengers.
The Margate "Meteorite" was surveyed and the answers noted, and photographs taken. It was a good opportunity once more to stretch the legs before turning around and heading for a stop at the Kingston playground. There was nearly a stop for ️ but the place was seemingly heaving with people after news that someone vaguely famous had been there earlier in the day (a Himswoth, I think he was in neighbours or home and away, actually frankly I don't care which, before going to star in some Hollywood blockbuster comic book remake movie that I probably haven't seen). My Darling wife described there being six of him "on a stick", whatever that means.
After departing Kingston, a return trip home was made via the same route we took to get there earlier in the day. Arriving home at basically dusk.
Thank you e.gregory1 for bringing me here and showing me this. My travelling companions also found all this talk about clasts and lithology throughly enthralling.
After submitting the answers and photo some time after I got home, I was given the green light to log and also told that it was an *{FTF}* which surprised me that such an accessible EarthCache was so long un"found".

That's a nice boulder.
I like that boulder.
I know the answers to these questions and have photos of the meteor as I stopped here and considered the possibility of it being an earth cache about two years ago.
Fantastic that you have done it
Will pass by again some time for the selfie.
