Ho! Ho! Ho! We did a great loop walk today taking the Major Welch trail up to the summit of Bear Mountain and then came down along the Appalachian Trail. Weather temps in the upper 40s were great for this Christmas Eve walk. The only minor difficulty was more ice on the trail than expected making our progress a bit slow in spots. It was getting dark as we got near the trail head, but not as dark as it looks in the picture! The sign is where we both started and ended our hike near the Bear Mountain Inn.

Nearest town is probably Kent, CT. Waccabuc, NY.

Longest riverwalk section of the AT in Kent, CT

Lotsa bear here...

Botetourt County Virginia down Salt Pond Rd off Blue Ridge Parkway. The AT crosses Salt Pond Rd here. On one side it is 6.3 miles to Route 11 and 2.8 miles to the Fullhardt Knob Shelter in a westward direction. On the other side of Salt Pond Rd the marker shows 3.4 miles to Wilson Creek Shelter and 5.8 miles to Black Horse Gap in an eastward direction. These 2 markers are only about 160 feet apart. Nace, about 1 3/4 miles south (as the crow flies), is the closest place but if you follow the AT the closest place is Troutville. 1BuzyMom

This is near where the trail crosses Hwy 19 in Georgia.I hiked part or the trail about 40 years ago as a boy scout. Hope to get on it again with my family. Thanks and God Bless! Big Grin

This is where the AT crosses state Rt. 233 just south of the Vision Quest driveway. There isn't much around so hikers would be better off continuing another 4 miles to Caledonia State Park. South Mountain post office is about 2 miles up the road, but Mont Alto would be more likely for supplies or a lay-over. #83

This directional sign is at an intersection of the AT and the Virginia Creeper Trail near Damascus, VA. Troop 387 rolled down the VCT on bikes from Whitetop Mtn. This spot is near the Creek Junction Cache (GCJJNP). I work with one of the AT maintenance groups (Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club) which covers 131 miles. Have been on the AT several times this year, but kept forgetting about this locationless cache. Had fun walking through the 21 pages of thumbnails.

# 810 3 of 24 found at 8:50 AM with MajorT. I'm currently working on getting any many of the locationless caches as I can before they go away. I realized the A.T. trail was in the area so I knew this was one of the caches I would have to do. We were right outside of Carlisle PA when we did this. TFTC!

Found today with ODragon! We were doing a cache along the AT trail and thought this would be a perfect opportunity to pick up this locationless! We were just outside of Carlisle, near Boiling Springs. I grew up in the area, but had never been to this section of the AT ... so I was thrilled to get to it. Thanks!

Cool Initially did this last week, reread the instructions and found what I had was wrong. Today I did the Pinwheel Vista cache (GCHZJP) and found this trailhead nearby. The trail behind me was the old vista and overlook (sign on tree). North is to the right in the picture (heading towards Pinwheel Vista) and south - the trek out - to the left. I perched the camera on a rock and hoped for the best. Great idea for a cache! Thanks for the smiley.

Together with Lynn I had the chance to find this new shelter at the AT. Thank you for this special cache! The shelter is above Dauphin, PA.

This locationless is for the Appalachian Trail in the United States, hence the part of the description that states from Maine to Georgia. I do appreciate the posts/that I received from our northern neighbor Canada, they are not what I'm looking for. Please feel free to repost your "find" as "note." Thanks again.

Tumbling Run Shelter on section of PA AT near Rte. 233 between Gettysburg and Chambersburg. CCCA used to have 2 caches up here so we are familiar with this area.

Found along the Gulf Hagas trail. This is a side trip worth taking for any hiker on the AT. I have hiked all of the AT in Maine. Best of luck on your hike. All of Maine is memorable.

Well this is at one of my favorite parts of my 2003 Thru-hike. The climb up-or-down Dragons tooth outside of Catawba Virginia. There are very few places along the trail south of New England that have rebar ladders placed. This be one of them matey! I also Threw a view from the top in as well.

Found this part of the AT trail today and we also hiked in about 3 miles to hide a couple of caches along this part of the trail. This marker is just short of the city of Tamaqua in PA. This is a fun trail to hike I learned about this part of the trail in a recent issue of backpacker magazine.

This cache was a good way to add a find to our visit to Massachusetts, since we didn't have much time to do other caches in the area. Here, you are at the summit of Mount Greylock, Massachusetts, elevation 3491 feet. The AT runs north and south right through here, quite steep and trecherous in spots. We hiked it from here to 3-miles north, ending up at Mount Williams. The nearest towns are Pittsfield, and North Adams, Massachusetts. For about an 8-10 mile hike north, the trail then crosses the border into Vermont. See Photos. Thanks for the Cache. Team R2.

I found this spot while caching a few weeks ago. I was going to log the direction sign close by, but I see my good friend Prairiepartners beat me to logging it by a couple of days. I suppose the closest town (town with at least one red light) would be Newport, Tennessee. TFTC.

We were on our way home from New York to North Carolina and took a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a part of the way. We got off the highway at Buchanan, VA and headed over to the BRP on Route 43. This stop was our first and was right where Rt 43 meets up with the parkway.

We made several other stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway where the AT crosses. At one stop, the Big Bird managed to obtain some "extra luck". After he got back in the car and started heading down the road, the Cuckoo Bird and Grandpa Pirate started to detect a very bad odor. We all thought maybe one of the others had gastonomical problems, so we all kept quiet until we could take it no more! [xx(] Sure enough, the Big Bird had "stepped in it" and we had to pull over and try to remedy the situation. Good thing we had extra shoes in the car! Wink

Thanks for the adventure!

Found this AT trailhead sign and blaze on the way to the Bear's Den cache (GCB76C) and BAM's Super cache (GCJXNC) with caching buds PyroNorm, FlyingMoose and NetworkCacher. The trailhead is adjacent to the Bear's Den youth hostel outside of Bluemount, VA.

This AT directional sign is located not too far from the parking lot and visitor kiosk logged by Indy-Md in October 2003. It shows the direction to the AT from an old section of US Route 40, now moved to new, wider pavement. In addition to pictures of this marker, we have pictures from where this side trail intersects the AT, showing distances to features in both directions. We hiked (non-virtually) this part of the AT several times in the past decades.

Located near Kent, CT this is a great place to do some hiking. Thanks for the adventure!

[font=comic sans ms]Did this one with my parents "Lehigh Mafia" on our "Annual 2005 Mafia Get-A-Way". We have nothing like this in flat ole Florida. We really enjoyed hiking up the AT. We did 3 cache's along this part of the AT. We met 2 hiker's on our way down the trail who were spending the summer hiking the AT. We found 2 different area's where hiker's camp out. The AT was a great hike.

Thanks for the Hunt
