a rather drippy experience today at G Z but it is really good to finally have this as a find ! it was after a hint from previous finder as my definition of s stump is some what different but once i had a little more clues , it was straight forward and a quick sign and it was good to get out from the drip area and back to the car . thank you for this multi cache on a day that required a multi . I took nothing and left nothing .
I dragged my kids around the Esplanade a few weeks ago to get the numbers needed for the final. Today while #2 was at hockey, my husband helped me finish it off. It took longer than I thought to finally find the sneaky cache. I had actually given up but my husband had "one more look" after re-reading the logs. I'm glad to have a smiley! TFTC
We too previously orienteered, and it was fun to re-engage with an orienteering map. After meeting a friend at the caf for morning tea, we went for a stroll around the park gathering the required information. The coordinates were soon calculated then off to the final, which took a wee while to locate, with our GPS seeming reluctant to settle, and the cache host slightly different from what we were expecting. Always enjoy walking here through the esplanade being the jewel of the crown for Palmy parks. I managed to find all waypoints & necessary info a few days ago, and worked out the coordinates required. Today was the day to have an another walk and visit back through the park and look for this cache. Cache soon in hand, so signed and replaced cache as found. So pleased to find a pencil in the cache as I only had brought my phone with me this morning. Thanks Phronomis for having a great multi cache here for me to find.
Only two caches today, and both were Multi caches. Id done what was required to get the coordinates and headed here after a mini pizza, cache was soon located, signed and replaced as found.Today being the last day of June also means we are at the half way point of 2024. Until this pint I have already found and logged more than in 2023, so a fairly prolific caching year too. Wed decided yesterday to head out today for a trip away from the house after having family visiting on Friday and Saturday morning. A stroll along the river at Ashhurst was the prelude and a couple of caches between some shopping targets was a good way to round out June. Thanks to the COs for their hides.
I am another in the orienteering to geocaching category. I still participate in the former but a change in circumstances means I am no longer competitive and it is more about the challenge of working out the best way of getting around a course.Despite the controls not having the flags of a traditional orienteering course, I was able to locate all the markers without difficulty and soon had some sensible looking final coordinates. Knowing that others have had difficulty, I thought I had struck it lucky when I saw an object that matched the hint perfectly when I arrived at my calculated ground zero. However, there was no cache to be seen so I expanded my search area and found another site that looked almost as good as the first one; but still no cache. While this was all going on, I had so stop searching activities many times to wait for muggles to pass, annoyingly several groups used the place near me to stop to think about where to head next. It was certainly a longer search that I would normally undertake. What it did mean though was that my GPSr settled down and was now insisting I check a place that was between my earlier places of interest. It was one I hadn't really considered but I soon posted a colour that is very familiar to me. I quickly checked my GPSr and saw that it said 4m so there are no problems with the coordinates. Although I wasn't looking for the right type of things to begin with earlier, it turned out that the hint is accurate. This was an enjoyable caching adventure and it gets a favourite point from me.
Found it!Took me a bit to get out - i was too scared to grab it, but i did in the end.Tftc and the little adventure!
How lovely - to have a geocache that combines two of our favourite activities. We're among those who have transitioned from orienteering to geocaching. For many years we were closely involved with the Red Kiwi Orienteering Club too (Mr G is a Life member) and it was through edvern that we were first introduced to geocaching. We always enjoy a wander around the Esplanade too. Today all worked out well for doing this multi - it didn't rain and there were only a few people about, so ideal for our searchings. None of the information points were difficult to find - just a little looking about required. Once completed we soon got to the final and were glad of the accounts in the previous couple of logs - otherwise we might have gone a little astray too. The advice to ignore the hint (at least to some extent) and concentrate on the coordinates is most helpful. We were somewhat surprised when we found the host - not quite as we'd have expected.Overall though this is a well-conceived multi nicely linked to orienteering. It was very enjoyable to do and brought up a little bit of nostalgia for us too. Gets a fav from us. TFTM Phronimos
This orienteering theme suited me well as I am a member of the Red Kiwi O club and I've been recently active in getting the permanent orienteering course up to date. However, like Search Steve before me it took two visits to complete. First time I had the correct coordinates but was distracted by hint objects that were near, but not at, GZ. Wondered if I had made a mistake with my numbers and headed home empty handed. Messaged Search Steve, he confirmed that I had the right coordinates and also gave me a helpful tip for finding it. Headed back this morning in the rain (after all orienteering events are never cancelled because of rain!) As in Steve's post, best to ignore the hint and use the coordinates. A slightly unexpected hide, but the hint is quite correct in its wording. Very impressed with the orienteering themed container and logbook. This is a well designed multi with helpful instructions. Well done Phronimos from start to finish, I know it took you some time to set up this well designed multi. A deserved favourite added.
Welp i left my notebook behind at home which i use to write everything down so im using my arm which isnt the easiest (i know i know, we have smartphones with note apps for that now, but im a good old fashion notebook user).Alas, no matter how much i look I cannot find the one for Z, it was just invisible to me for some reason!I will come back another weekend for this one.
Thanks Phronimos for this WOW multi! - as it's World Orienteering Week I ought to get out and do some!! Sadly I didn't have much exposure to orienteering as a youngster I'm sure it would have been great fun!! Yesterday I visited all the control points and gathered the data for the final coords, however did not manage to zero in on the cache. I spent a while examining 2 distinctly interesting hinted areas but gave up after 10-15mins... Today with the help of my partner I circled round until the satellites told me I was within 4m and then ignoring the hint I quickly found GZ, which was an appropriately marked container in a beautiful spot. While signing the cool log, we were joined by 2 friendly fantails and also spotted about 10 more flitting around up high in the trees! It was awesome! And {2TF} TNLNSL TFTM +FP for the activity and scenic location!
Joint {FTF} @ 11:07 with Stardust718Having driven up to Palmy last night after work to catch up with my Kiwi family, I had gone out this morning to run a work-related errand and had quite forgotten that my phone was still on silent. Subsequently I missed the notification of this new cache, and it was only when Etherlord rang me - 45 minutes after publication - to ask if I was going for the FTF that I realised it existed! So off I shot to the starting co-ords to pick up the trail. And what do you know, but part way through and I bump into Stardust, whom I haven't seen for the best part of 6 months. Very fortuitous for me as she was further along with solving this Multi than I was, and very graciously allowed me to tag along for the final waypoint before we then headed off to look for the cache.Again, she was far more on the ball than I was and made the find whilst I was busy taking far too much interest in a nearby Hint object. Well done that cacher! And thank you Phronimos for setting this cache up. A feeling of Deja Vu from the recent Marton Reservoir event I think
Joint {FTF} with Stardust718 and TwigNZ. I did this permanent orienteering course a few weeks ago to train for the school champs so already knew where to find the required controls for each waypoint. We quickly navigated around the map and came to a likely final location where stardust718 was first to spot it. Thanks.
Joint {FTF} @ 11:07am with OliverBellNZ and TwigNZ. I saw the notification come through and needed to head in to town soon anyway so thought I might be able to do this geocache on the way. Fortunately I had OB with me who had competed in the schools orienteering champs just last week at the Esplanade. In preparation for that we had done most of the permanent orienteering course the week before (although had not noted the information required for completing this geocache). So, as I was heading out the door I grabbed the already printed map and noted the required control numbers. On arriving at the esplanade OB found most of the waypoints using the orienteering map and we noted the information that was needed for this geocache. With one waypoint to go we met up with TwigNZ, also out looking for little orange control markers. It was enjoyable being able to complete the course together, and catch up, having not seen each other for many months. I made a quick find at the final but then stood back and let the others also make the find. Thanks for setting up this geocache Phronimas. Very appropriate container. We enjoyed the whole experience this cache had to offer.
