Built in 1857, by the Worcester County Mechanics Association, Mechanics Hall may rank among the world's finest concert halls and is internationally regarded for its superb acoustics. It is located in downtown Worcester, the second largest city in New England.

Called "the showpiece of a city where the arts thrive," by Horizon Magazine, Mechanics Hall has been judged by architectural historians as the nation's finest pre-Civil War concert hall. For nearly 150 years, the Hall has been the cultural cornerstone of Central Massachusetts and is ideally located in downtown Worcester. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Worcester County Mechanics Association was formed as a non-profit organization in 1842 for the purpose of educating the city's industrial workers. The Association began to provide classes in the mechanical arts as well as cultural and political events for all members of the community.

By 1857, it was clear the Mechanics Association required a building of its own, having outgrown its rented spaces. Under the guidance of the Associations's president, wire industrialist Ichabod Washburn, the Mechanics hired Elbridge Boyden to design and construct the building. When it was finished, Mechanics Hall was beautiful indeed, but it also represented the state-of-the-art in mechanical systems and construction techniques. Mechanics Hall is testimony to the skill and ingenuity of the artisans and tradesmen of Worcester County, which defined them as the founders of America's Industrial Revolution.

It is home to the Worcester Music Festival, the oldest music festival in the country established in 1859. Mechanics Hall served as a major political podium, particularly regarding the issues of abolition, women's suffrage and temperance.

The "Old Opera House" in historic Charles Town, West Virginia was established in 1911. It is now the home of community theater and several wonderful musicals are put on each year. The building has recently been fully restored to it's original splendor and it's really quite beautiful inside. It's located just one block from the Jefferson County Court House which was the location of the infamous trial of John Brown for treason, after he took over a Federal armory in nearby Harpers Ferry, WV just a couple years before the outbreak of the American Civil War.

The smallest Lawman is pictured holding our Magellan Meridian Gold. This was one of two quick caches on a warm and sunny November day in the Eastern Panhandle of Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.

Even in rural American (our town population is 1200) the arts are alive and well.[^][^] This building was going to be demolished, but through hard work, grants and donations it was saved. For awhile the building served as our local movie theater. The Basin Fine Arts Center serves local talent - Community Chorus, Church choirs, piano concerts of classical music, school productions as well as a variety of entertainment from the surrounding areas. The building was built in 1916.

This is North Bay, Ontario's Capitol Centre, home to the North Bay Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra is a blend of 40 to 50 professional and amateur musicians and this season will perform a series of five concerts. The art deco Capitol Centre was built to host travelling vaudeville shows but was later converted to movie theatre. The city's arts community lobbied hard for many years to acquire the funding to buy the building and turn it into a performing arts centre, home to no just the orchestra but theatre groups and an art gallery.

PHILHARMONIC HALL, LIVERPOOL, UK

I was amazed nobody had logged this impressive building, so I thought I'd claim it first...

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (= RLPO) administered by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, is one of the oldest concert-giving organisations in the world. It gave its first performance on March 12 1840, and was awarded Royal Patronage in 1957. It remains today the only orchestral society in Britain to own and operate its own hall.

The original Philharmonic Hall opened its doors in 1849 but was destroyed by fire in 1933. Renowned Liverpool architect Herbert J Rowse was commissioned to design the current Art Deco building, which was completed in 1939. Between 1992 and 1995 the society embarked on an extensive ?10.3 million refurbishment and the hall's facilities and acoustics can now rival those of any concert hall in the country.

Together with the neighboured older Berlin Philharmonic Hall (1963, 2,440 seats) it is mainly used by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Both buildings together with the Berlin State Library have been designed in the same style as one coherent complex ("Culture Forum") by the architect Hans Scharoun. The Chamber Music Hall has been built long after his death, but strictly as he had designed it. It opened in 1987 and has 1,180 seats.
You can find more infos about the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Music here: http://www.berliner-philharmoniker.de/en/kammermusik/
The photos show also parts of the Philharmonic Hall (on the left side) and of the Potsdamer Platz buildings (on the right side).
The waypoint is taken in front of the entrance of the Chamber Music Hall.
Thank you for this cache - and #475!

Sidney Myer Music Bowl
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Dak's Emu Mob logged the indoor home of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=e944bf56-1ea5-4892-b82d-1e200ded0d5e so I thought I'd pick up where he left off and take you all to the outdoor home of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra play a summer series at the bowl each year. The music bowl has also hosted some of the biggest acts in the world since it was built in 1957.

The Laycock Street Theatre in Gosford, NSW, Australia. This theatre is the centre of culture in Gosford. It doesn't say much for our town. It is home to the local musical society and has also hosted a few international acts.

My daughter (holding the GPS) has performed here herself in school plays.
