St. John the Baptist School
217 Hubbard St
Ludlow MA 01056-0105 US
This school is situated next to the St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic church in Ludlow MA. It houses approximately 300 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eight. The cornerstone indicates the school was built in 1924 and at that time the parish was predominantly French.
The segregated entrances were on opposite sides of the building (hence impossible to get both in the same camera shot!).

The school is still used, but I doubt if the teachers still insist that the girls and boys use separate entrances.

Forestdale School in North Smithfield, Rhode Island was built in the 1870's and has seperate doorways that were used by boy and girl students.
This one room school was built on land donated by the Forestdale Manufacturing Company. All village children in grades 1 through 8 were taught by one teacher. Later the school was used for primary grades only and still later was used as the Eleanor Howard Kindergarten until 1974.
Since 1977, the schoolhouse has been home to the North Smithfield Heritage Association, and contains meeting space, exhibits and their library.

This is the former Olyphant Junior High School, located at 211 Susquehanna Street, in Olyphant, PA. It is now part of the county's housing authority, which provides low income housing. Currently, the building is the Lackawanna Heritage Apartments. In the back, there are two entrances with "girls" carved into the masonry above each one. The former "boys" entrances were at the front and are gone now, since the building has been remodeled to meet housing codes. While I was trying to take these photos, there were carloads of elderly people sitting the the parking lot (at 8:00 a.m., in 5 degree weather) waiting for a bus to take them on a day trip somewhere. Of course, they were all watching me to see what I was doing. This is why the photos are from a farther distance than I would have liked!
This ist the dormitory "Professor-Anschütz-Haus" near the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
I lived there quite a while.
It was formerley divided into the 9-story "Herrenhaus"(men) an the 6-story "Damenhaus"(women).
To ensure, there are no men getting into the "Damenhaus" there was 24/7 a doorman until the late 80.
Now the rules are no longer valid, and i lived in the Damenhaus with much pleasure!

St Johns Lutheren Church circa 1852.
The two doors on the front of the church were for Men and Women to enter the building. The men and women set seperatly through the services.
While driving by this church with a freind of ours I said that would be a Geocache. She said "If you want to see the inside I have the key." Well, she didn't have the key with her and I haven't asked her to show me around the place but I am happy to claim this church.

This is on the outside of the City Building in Monessen, PA. Monessen is named for many of the imigrants that moved into the area to become steel workers from Essen, Germany. Monessen is located on the Monongahela River. So you get Mon-Essen or Monessen. I asked my dad about these doors , since he grew up there - he has no idea. Enjoy the photos.

Erin ON Canada Found this one while driving to my daughter's home. The old school, in downtown Erin, was closed for a while, but is now incorporated as part of the new school. An enclosed corridor was built from one to the other, now joining them as one large building.
I found it in Germany, Solingen, its an old Gymnasium, with an seperate Entrace for Boys and Girls.
In our city there are entrances for man and women. This location is a school where the boys enter by a building and the girls on the other hand. Greetings from Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
Found in West Branch, Iowa. This is the meeting hall for the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers.
Herbert Hoover was a member. You can see the two doors. There is even a dividing wall between the two sides while worship service is performed. The wall can be removed for meals after the twice weekly meetings.

This is the schoolhouse of the Andre - high school on the Kassberg in Chemnitz/Germany. Earlier boys and girls went to school here apart. Hence, there are 2 entrances to the schoolhouse for girl and for boys.

I found this building in Stockwell, South London. The building was built as a school and is still being used as one. It is now the Durand Primary School. It is located NW corner of Hackford Road & Hillyard Street, right across the street from 87 Hackford Road where Vincent VanGough lived from 1873-1874.
You can clearly see the "Girls" entrance since it is used as the main entrace to the school but the "Boys" entrance is covered over with ivy. If you look closely you can still see the word.

The Snoqualmie Depot in Snoqualmie, Washington, was built in 1890 and is currently a railroad museum and bookstore. Formerly, the bay window enabled the station agent to see trains approaching. The curved room at the north of the depot (today's Depot bookstore) used to be the men's waiting room. The middle room was the ladies' waiting room. In Victorian times, it wasn't considered proper for women traveling alone to mingle with men. There is a ticket window that served each waiting room. You can see the bay window and the separate outside ticket windows in the photos. The historical information about the two entrances, waiting areas, and ticket windows is inside of the Northwest Railway Museum, but the signs indicating the gender separation is no longer present.

this is the "Westschule" in Jena, thuringia, germany.
it was my first scool and I visited it for 2 years.
the scool was opened by Herrmann Winzer in 1904.
he began to instruct handicapped children in special classes and put thereby the foundation-stone for the Jenaer auxiliary school.

Flora Stevenson Primary school, Edinburgh
The school opend in 1901 on the edge of the New town area. As you can see from the photos, the boys and girls were helped as to which entrance they had to use by the use of the carvings rather than the actual words.
Its not possible to get both entrances in one photo but here is a selection from today including the Boys and Girls entrances.

The Conway Centre, Conway Street, Birkenhead, Wirral UK.
These are now offices used by Wirral Borough Council, but in former years it was probably a school. It has 2 boys entrances, 2 girls entrances, 1 boys gate and 1 girls gate.
Interestingly both Boys entrances are on the front, with the gate down the lft side, and the 2 girls entrances are down the right side and their gate around the back !
Lots of photos (one of each entrance/gate and a close up of the boys/girls signs). Also note that one of the boys and one of the girls entrances have had the word "Entrance" painted black, presumably as they are still in use (by both sexes!)

We found the King George School a week or so ago when doing the Calgary: A Sandstone City Earthcache, but never thought of the boys and girls entrances until we checked out this locationless. So, we stopped by this morning camera and GPS in hand and captured the visit. Thanks for the hunt and reminders of the way things used to be.
Located at 771 Ellington Road, South Windsor, Connecticut, the schoolhouse was built in 1837 and was sold for $35. In 1869 a teacher earned $66 for the 11-week winter term. The school was closed in 1952. The building has separate entry doors for boys and girls, typical of that time. It is now a museum and open from 1 to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of each month, May through November. During July and August, the museum is open Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, go to: http://www.southwindsorhistory.tk/.
I found this school on my way to another cache. The school is called Cromdale School located on 79 Street and 113 Avenue in Edmonton Alberta Canada. It was built in 1931.
Elm Street School built in 1911 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Staff were working on getting everything ready to open the new school year.

You might ask why this one-room schoolhouse from 1875 needs two identical entrances in the front? Why, form two lines boys and girls. I did not see specific signs on the doors, but I believe the convention was "girls on the left, boys on the right". There is history on the building here: http://members.cox.net/mhs1875/paradise.htm
Gosford High School in NSW, Australia, still has the signage from when the "form two lines" was in operation.
