Found this air raid siren on this great little volunteer fire department in the middle of town in Lincolnville, Maine.
One of several of these sirens spread around Polk County, Ga. This one at the E-911 center in Cedartown.

These sirens are located in different areas of Idaho Springs, Colorado. I have never heard these in operation, as I don't live in that area, but I looked closely and they were all connected to the electric lines at each location. They are located near old Fire Departments. There were no other types of sirens that I saw in the town.
Oh the days!!! In the sixties, while in grade school, we would practice by "running for your life." If you lived within a 30 minute "run" of your house, you were released to run home before the "BOMB" detonated. Some reality that was!! I was just at the 30 minute distance, however, if you slowed your pace just a bit, it took 35 minutes. We never told them that!! This siren covers an area called Valley Heights in New Kensington, PA. It is located at intersection of George and Carl Avenues. Haven't heard it since the sixties, but I bet it still works! Keith and Susan
This siren is located in Arcade NY. It is still used to this day by the fire department, as well as the noon lunch siren.
I live a grand total of 400 feet from this thing, AND IT IS LOUD! My parents live 5 miles away and you can hear it clear as a bell when it goes off. Was a lot of fun being able to find out where that screaming call of death comes from at 3am in the morning...haha.

We were checking in on a couple of our caches near this area when we happened to notice one of these huge sirens. We've only driven by it...oh,...thousands of times without ever noticing it before! We're impressed that this thing is even still here -- it has survived many, many hurricanes.

Just 200 meters from our house is a Civil defense siren. In the Netherlands are 3800 of these sirens, in our province Groningen there are about 280. Every first monday of a month at 12.00 h. sharp, the sirens get tested, I can assure you: they make an awfull lot of noice. Every now and then the radio tells us what to do, when the sirens go off at another time than the first monday at 12.00 h. "Go inside; close windows and doors and listen to your radio for more information". Thank God it never happened...When you want to read more about the alarmsystem in the Netherlands http://www.brabant.nl/Wonen/Veilig%20en%20schoon%20wonen/Wat%20te%20doen%20als%20de%20sirene%20gaat.aspx (also available in English)

There are several sirens in our area, as a prime target during WWII our town makes it a point to keep on its toes. There is multiple railroad over railroad crossings in this area and are still considered prime terrorist targets in this present day.
This siren is located at a grade school in Galesburg IL.
It is truly a shame that these location-less caches will be removed from the web site They offered a great change of pace from the every day cache hunt.

This sign was located in Boyne City. As I was trying to take a pic, I had a spook as it went off while I was there. There were fire trucks everywhere so I did my best with the GPS.

I have been driving around with my eyes to the sky trying to find an old siren. I know I have seen them in this area, and was trying to get this one done before time runs out!
Then I recalled a sight when I visited both the virtual cache (Tallest Thing in the Neighborhood - GCBE2B) and the Benchmark (HS5117 - COWELL CEMENT CO STACK) at this location.
The sight is a familiar one (I bet even Joani and Marky know what I am speaking of). It is a tall smokestack in an area that in past years was called Cowell but which is now part of Concord. This was the site of the Cowell Lime and Cement Company that produced portland cement from 1905 to 1946. The cement plant was one of the largest employers in the area in the early 1900's. Through the years farmers threatened to sue the Cowell plant over the air pollution which coated their vines and orchards with fine cement dust. The cement company built a 235-foot-high smokestack in 1934 in an effort to dissipate the dust into the atmosphere. Labor problems forced the plant to close in 1946.
Instead of destroying the smokestack, at some point it was decided to highlight it, capping the top and refinishing the outside. It is also used as a navigation sight and you can often see planes circling the stack, waiting for clearance to land at Buchanan Field.
Unfortunately, in the recent past it is showing signs of deterioration and the community is in the process of deciding to restore or remove.
In this process the cap has been removed and is lying on the ground adjacent to the stack...and on top are three speaker/sirens that would've been used to warn the public of impending danger.
Checked with Locationless Proximity Analyzer.

Found in Luling Texas USA. This is the old 50's style Air Raid siren that none of us ever wanted to hear go off.
This one is set here because Luling is and has been an oil town and probably targeted during the Cold War days.
It is classic just standing there...

On top of our local fire station in Stansbury Park, Tooele County, Utah. There are sirens all over the county, as the Chemical Weapons disposal depot is in Tooele. The sirens warn citizens of chemical weapons spills, and also go off to call out the volunteer fire fighters in the county. They are tested every week. They play a recording when they go off, and a few weeks ago, the "evacuate" recording was played by accident, causing quite a panic. Officials said it was an electronic glitch!
This is a WWII siren that is located in the middle of California, PA. It is currently being used as the fire whistle for the Fire Dept. - and IT IS LOUD... Enjoy the photos.

Located in Bixby,Ok. We still use these very frequently because we are located in tornado alley. The city tests all sirens every Wednesday at 12:00 so we get to hear them all the time. The test tells them if the siren is rotating and sounding the alarm.
No, it's not a chimney! It's a siren on top of an old firehouse in Verdun (Montreal), QC, Canada! Thanks for that cache!!
This is a siren in Fraser Mi. It is now used for natural disasters. IT goes off on the first sunday of the month at 1:00.

This outdoor warning siren is located in Latokaski, in city of Espoo in Finland.
this is a sign across the street from an elementary school in mill valley, I talked to marky the cache owner about my "find" in advance and he said to go for it... the siren itself is not visible from the street for the photo... i even tried coming at noon and following the sound!
Nothing unusual about this siren - have been looking for one and just decided to log a typical Minnesota siren.
This Civil Siren was place by members of the Park City Fire Department 40 to 50 years ago. This siren is still used today to alert fire fighters and ambulance crews in the event of an emergency. This is placed in Park City, Montana. As a volunteer firefighter I was alerted to the most recent structure fire on November 18th 2005.

Found this on the way through Michigan to Windsor, Canada. I forget where exactly this location is as we hit several caches along our 4 hours journey.
This one is located in Canonsburg, PA. I had to zoom quite a bit to get the siren (siren is located on the backside of the municipal building...the only way to get the picture was to head up the street/hill so I could get it at a good angle), so GPS is not in picture.
This steam powered emergency whistle is located at the H. J. Heinz Company of Canada in Leamington Ontario. This whistle served many purposes including being used as an air raid alarm during the second world war and wars since. It is still in use today and blows off weekdays at 12 noon.

The picture of the alarm system is taken in Epe, which is a small town in the middle of The Netherlands.
The alarm system on the photo is used every monday at the beginning of the month at 12.00. This of course to test whether it can heard by everyone. Hopefully we will never need it!
Thanks for this cache!

Found this siren in the village of Chazy, NY near the Canadian border. The siren is still in use today by the local fire department.
We were taking a side trip on some back roads in McMinn County and north of Athens, TN. We discovered this siren high up in the air on a narrow road CR281 near a dead end road. It was a bit in the valley and trees surrounded it. It has to be a tornado siren or maybe a fire alert. It towered over everything. As we continued down the road we discovered more several miles away. The foliage was starting to turn so you can get distracted from looking for these objects.
Hello!
I found a sirene in our village. It´s the sirene of the fire departement in our comunity. Every month the firemen practice for the case of emergency. I´m very glad that they are in the village, because they often could help in case of emergency. Few years ago they also could help me when our house burned down.
Greetings from Germany - Alsdorf

This siren is on the roof of JFK high school in sw Denver. The last time we heard it was this summer when it sent out a tornado warning in the neighborhood.
This siren is definitely a relic of days gone by (see photo) - and yet, is in active use. This is part of the Contra Costa County's CAER (Community Awareness & Emergency Response) system. http://www.cococaer.org/prepare.html The CWS (Community Warning System) "alerts the community and emergency responders when there is a hazardous materials incident". The joys of living near a refinery. So, having lived in downtown Martinez for over a dozen years, I hear these sirens sound a "test blast" on the first Wednesday of each month at 1100.
I've tried to find maps of the sirens, and couldn't - but then just stumbled upon this one a few days ago, when I wasn't even looking for it. Yay.

These sirens are becoming rarer and rarer, here is one on top of a building on the outskirts of Huddersfield in Yorkshire England. Cheers MaxKim.
Found this siren on the way to Southport, NC today. It's in a very rural area, which is somewhat surprising. I also saw another one on Oak Island while Scuba Girl and I were hunting down some caches.
I remembered this one from childhood in Arleta California at the intersection of Woodman & Ventura Cyn Avenues. The siren and others like it were tested at 10:00am sharp on the last Thursday of every month. But I don't know when that stopped. We never did "drop drills" at school in conjunction with the sirens.
Found this one today in Zutphen, Holland. My hometown. Regards, Theo.
This civil defense siren is located on Station Street in Converse, TX very near what was the original city office. I've asked around and nobody knows for sure, but the city manager believes it was placed at this location in the mid 1950s. It's now used to call in volunteers for major alarm fires. I've lived in this area nearly 15 years and have only heard the siren three times....last a couple years ago.
We found this siren from Kuopio suburb in Finland. That blurry thing in the picture is our GPS.
