Thanks for the reason to come up here Darryn - Driven past here for years and never noticed the Nikau Reserve before! Great walk, great views - TFTC!
BTW, confirming Obblue's earlier comments: log book is down to "one visit left" (quarter of a page left) and the lid of the cache is broken so that water is getting in. Tipped water out and placed upside down to try to prevent more water getting in but the cache really needs attention now!
Nothing in, nothing out...

12:22 Just had to get out of the (bumper to bumper) traffic... And it's not normally daytime when I go past here... Hoped the cache was still there despite being disabled...
Note to Butterfly Lady - stairs at Lake View are nothing compared to this. What a great walk!
Pity I left camera in the car... The views are amazing - and I see that there is a house site being prepared at the top of the reserve
Thanks. SL. (on last page).

As you well know, the cache container is in a poor state. I tipped out the water and flipped it over, but it needs replacing. Also the log has one page left..... maintainance time buddy!!! Love the location though, keep it up. [^]
Cache lid has many cracks in it and one seal is broken. Needs replacing as contents will get wet.
Easy find, clue took me straight to cache once within the area. Track has taken a beating from all the rain earlier in the week. Very windy up top but great view. Love these bush walks. TFTC.

Found it on my wife's birthday / family BBQ. Approached from Nikau Valley side (Nikau Heights road then along ridge). Fantastic view! Clear, sunny and not too windy.
The container lid has a crack in it, and one of the clips is broken in half. Therefore the container is no longer water-tight and the contents are slightly damp. Will need replacing pretty soon...

0paco0, Red and the dogs found it.
The views from up here are great, especially on a sunny day after a rainy week.
There's possum bait out here, so the dogs had to stay on short leads. Great, they were keen to get there and gave us extra traction on the VERY slippery, wet track.
They're real geocaching dogs now - just look at the satisfied look on the photo of Pepsi with the cache (on the right).
OUT - Albumex (we'll have to google that)
IN - toy camera and TB New Zealand

My first find...
I actually climbed the hill twice (Don't ask what went wrong the first time)
- Coin (A treat first time out)
+ Screwdriver
After looking at the view we went for a tiki-tour around the neighbourhood to see some of the landmarks we didn't know existed.
There is a crack in the lid and the contents are a bit moist.

One of the seals on the cache is broken (it wasn't me!). Not urgent but will probably need replacing some point soon. Cheers, miowmix : )
My boyfriend said the woods reminded him of a David Attenborough documentary - the animal noises and tropical looking plants are very exotic to us brits : )
Left golf ball, took Geocoin. TFTC : )

Talk about windy! We went back via the pylon track to avoid being blown off our feet. Great views of our home patch. TNLN. TFTC.

Had walked this track a few times but thought it went only as far as the table. Didn't realise you could walk further and be rewarded with such great views. Well worth it on a nice day. No problems finding cache. Left small bottle of shampoo and took woodscrews. TFTC.
The walk was worth the pain (pulled muscle). I wish it had been a clear day though (quite overcast and drizzly.

Unfortunately it seems we were the first people not to find it. After half an hour searching we couldnt find it in the very long grass.
BUT we didnt have a GPS and were working off descriptions and a b&w google earth printout!
Great bush walk and view tho

log book has about 4 pages left; also one of the locking tabs is split on the container (still locks)
Well I finally managed a visit to my cache to retrieve a TB Between a rock and a hard place as its intention was to get to my cache. dragonsinger had just been there and taken it for a wee adventure.

The second of two today (the other was Once were Trains) where just a few short steps from the car park results in a through the looking glass experience, a magnificient magical transformation of light, colour, form and beauty as you enter the forest in an instant.
The rest of the walk was less than magical however with gasping lungs, tortured kness and calf muscles on fire, but all worth it in the end. Fantastic!
Dropped off wanderinn TB and took Fountain of Youth Gonzo TB. Between a Rock and a Hard Place TB spotted.

13:47 Yes Heights indeed, bit of a struggle climbing up the hill after a large breakie . Last nights rain didn't help matters either. Got very wet from the rain in the trees and the long grass.
But I had to press of as I had a TB from Europe that wanted to get to this very cache .
Cache was quite exposed, so hid it the best I could with the location. But the contents are all dry and the cache is doing well. Thanks for the cache.

Didn't make it up the track! Started out with good intentions, but gave up when the track got just a bit too slippery, muddy and wet. The track was a stream and the boards were cascading water features! Didn't have the right clothes or shoes on and there was more than a slight chance of ending up on our b-ms in the mud! Pity, as it was so beautiful in the palms and we were sorry we couldn't continue on, we'll be keen to try this one again.
Nice morning to hike up this, but boy it made me feel out of shape! There's a picnic table at the top of the trail before veering over to the cache location, I've included coordinates. That might be a nice places for a tea break!

After finding the car park, it was pretty easy. You can get to the car park by the Lindale exit of state highway 1 and going north on the east side of the highway - this should make it much easier!
Great walk up through the Nikaus a walk I had not done before, really nice. I am going to have a play with photoshop and some images I took now!
Great find, but mind that fence.

Our first cache found, very easy walk good challenge to find but no white tape on fence. Thank you very much thoroughly enjoyed the view.
This was a steep walk. Not what we call Teva Terrain, we nearly slipped out of them. Great view!
11:29 2nd cache for the day! What an amazing view on this hill! (we can see where we're staying the last two nights). Walk through Nikaus something special. Took yowie and candle. Left CITO bag, Nellie TB, replacement stash note (original was wet) and pencil. With 10 caches down this weekend, this was the clear highlight! Thanks Darryn!!!
I'm agreeing with Roaming Kiwi... the family piked out about 2 minutes from the top! probably a good thing as we might have lost the 2yo in the long grass!
Great views but my digital camera over-exposed the photos (didn't think that was possible)

Great walk through the Nikau palms. Found the cache quite easily. Left a Tangram puzzle, took the bubble blowing kit.
This was the first of the caches we attempted during our trip from Wellington to Tarawera. What a lovely walk through some spectacular bush. Of course it is a bit of a climb but the views made it all worthwhile.

Thought we couldn't get to Nikau Reserve Car Park because of road works, so parked at bottom of Nikau Valley and took the direct route.
Note: You *can* park at the Nikau Reserve Car Park!

Sunny hot day. Took picnic and enjoyed the view immensely.

After a very steep climb up the hill, and a lot of puffing and complaining, we did find the cache. It was all in good order, and a cool little hiding spot too. We almost ended up heading towards a larger more prominent landmark further down, but laziness prevailed, and I insisted we check the closer spot first
Took out the Sika-Kitty travel bug, and an energizer squeeze light, left behind a Bike Puncture repair kit and a blue stretchy lizard.

Had a group of 8 of at the start, a few first time cachers along with us. Only 3 of us stuck with it to the end. Views were incredible but we had to jump over a few fences to make it there.
We left the Sika-Kitty TB and took the party popper and silver pen.

What an absolutely awesome view! The family was puffing a bit by the top of the hill but well worth the slog. Had to avoid some boggy patches (and boring life stories of other day-trippers) but found the cache easily. + party popper, - tennis ball.

Ok, so I was too hasty and I cheated.
I had a rough map printed and I drove further up Nikau Palm Road and round the corner where I spied a roughish track heading steeply up in the right direction.
No letterbox, or private property or keep out signs. I drove past, but then returned and tried to drive up it in my little van. Believe me this one is strictly four X, or mountain bike territory.
Luckily I made it up the first steep bit to a level area where I abandoned any further ideas of driving further. I walked the rest of the way, a bit muddy, but relatively easy going. The GPS indicated that crossing a fence was necessary but it had a mean and hungry barbed top strand I did not fancy trying to straddle. A short detour found a safer crossing point and then I went straight to it, only deviating for the largest, freshest cowpats.
In went Puff the incontinent cat.
Out came the Rogue Travel Bug, heading north to morrow.
