The Trans Canada Trail starts at mile one on the old railway bed at the old train station in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.

The Railway Coastal Museum's home is in the 100-year-old train station building, located at 495 Water Street West in St. John’s.
Thanks for the cache.

At the Eastern end of the Orange County line, on the R-T of the old CSX RR, there was a sign that the trail was ending. But, I noticed that another trail was across the street at a diagonal. The sign I am posting is at the start of this segment of the R-T on the Western side of Seminole County. I didn't have much time to hike but what I did see was very well maintained and in use by several groups of people and some on bikes.

The Leaside Spur is a three kilometre section of track that used to connect Canadian National and Canadian Pacific lines in Toronto, Canada. This spur was no longer required and was sold to the City as a walking trail. Although no official plaque exists at this time, the cache owners allowed us to log this. Thank you very much for the cache. CGS

Note that last summer we placed a four stage multi-cache located entirely on this trail (GCQA1C).

This is a short (one mile) walking trail located on Washington Street (Perry County Road 45) in Marion, Alabama. The picture is taken from the southernmost end of the trail, looking north.

The Clinton Trail is part of three trails from rails that pass through the Rochester, Rochester Hills, Orion Township area of Michigan.
The Clinton River Trail roughly parallels and frequently crosses the Clinton River and travels nearly 16 miles through Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Pontiac, and Sylvan Lake. The 4.5-mile portion of the trail running through Rochester Hills bisects the city from the southwest to the northeast along a former railroad right-of-way. The habitat along this portion of the trail is unique in its diversity and creates many opportunities to view and enjoy a host of wildlife species. Deer are common in the brush, muskrats and mink can be seen in the many wetlands, and the oak forests are home to numerous other mammals and birds. This trail is an important wildlife corridor and links the centrally located Avon Nature Study Area to Riverbend Park in the west and Bloomer Park in the east, all of which provide access to the Clinton River.
The trail also borders the city's Environmental Education Center and Avon Nature Area, providing opportunities for visitors to appreciate and understand the surrounding natural environment, learn more about the diverse ecosystem found in our community, and enjoy programs covering wetland studies, fly fishing, bird watching, night hikes, and summer camp nature walks.
The Clinton River Trail is a non-motorized transportation route that links to the West Bloomfield Trail to the west, the Paint Creek Trail to the north, and the Macomb Orchard Trail to the east, permitting easy access to community parks, businesses, green spaces, and other existing recreational and cultural sites. Until the Rochester Hills' portion of the trail is completely developed and resurfaced, use caution, as ruts, washout areas, and other hazards may be present. Use at your own risk until full development is complete.
I found this one on a very cold winter's day in December.

This is what is known as the YRT or Yough River Trail. It is an improved trail that used to be a railroad bed - it followed alongside the Youghiogheny River. This perticular put-in is located in Cedar Creek Park, located just off US Rt. 51 in Belle Vernon, PA.

Thanks for the hunt, that makes kill # 204 for us.

A road crossing of Rails to Trails at the edge of Kentville, Nova Scotia. Founded in 1868 as the Windsor and Annapolis Railway, in 1895 it became the Dominion Atlantic Railway. It maintained it's name in 1912 when leased to Canadian Pacific for 999 years. In 1989 CP ceased it's operation.
This same line ran right through the middle of CFB Cornwallis, our military's recruit training centre. Once our marching platoon had to stop and wait for an approaching train to pass.
In 1998 the town of Kentville opened 7 kms of the abandoned line as a trail system. The trail runs from Coldbrook, through Kentville, to New Minas. It starts in a bird sanctuary and passes through wetlands, dykes, pastures and hardwood forests, to downtown businesses, to ball parks, golf courses, and residential areas.

18-Dec-05
This is an old rail trail turned bike path that goes through Kenosha county and on into Racine, Wi.

15-Dec-05
The Kim Williams Trail in Missoula, Montana hasn't see a train on it since the 30's, the tracks were moved to the North side of the river. This is where a lot of the college kids jump on the trail for a run, walk, or bike ride.

The Eber Road sign on the Wabash Cannonball Railroad. Located in Western Lucas County, Monclova, Ohio.

13-Dec-05
These photos were taken at the station house of the old train service between Wadstena (modern spelling Vadstena)and Fogelsta in Östergötland, Sweden. It is now a museum but is has been possible to use the train in summertime. This dark december evening it was possible to drink Lucia-coffee in the restaurant-wagon.

An old railway in an industrial park in the Irvine area. Rail embedded in the road that lead to nowhere was a dead giveaway. There is a trail that leads to the south. See pictures!

12-Dec-05
This is the trail head for the Cataraqui Trail located in Smith Falls Ontario. The trail was a Canadian National railway until 1986, it was converted to a trail in 1998.

This tail is made from on old rail line that ran between the cities of Barrie and Orillia in Ontario Canada. The "Oro-Medonte Railtrail" runs along the shores of lake simcoe, making it a great hiking trail that is quite scenic.

06-Dec-05
This is the sign at one of the trailheads for The Cardinal Greenway in eastern Indiana. The trail is on an old railbed that once ran from Cincinnati to Chicago (I think). When completed the trail will stretch from Richmond to Marion and be approximately 60 miles long. So far about 20 miles are completed in the Muncie area, another 10 in Marion, and around 6 in Richmond. I live about 10 miles from the trail, and often ride my bicycle and run on it.

04-Dec-05
Cowboy Trail Head located at Ta Ha Zouka park in Norfolk Nebraska. The trail runs over 100 miles.

Located behind an excellent train museum in Pemberton, NJ. Built in 1892, the North Pemberton Railroad Station was in active use until 1969 when the last direct rail service between Pemberton and Camden ended. Restoration was completed in March, 1999. The Station is on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Sites. They are restoring a few old trains here and the old rail line is the start of the Trails to Rails path here.

Found a sign at the trailhead of the Old Railroad Bed Trail, which is on Monte Sano in Huntsville, AL. Monte Sano has a number of hiking trails that vary in difficulty from easy to quite difficult. This sign was placed by Eagle Scout Arthur Wilke. He also placed other very informative signs at interesting points along the trail. Thanks for the cache.

19-Nov-05
This is the trail head for the Monon trail in Indianapolis on 38th Street next to the Fairgrounds.
Just a little north of here is a trail entrance to the Fairgrounds for bicycles.
During the two weeks of the Fair during August, they advertise to fairgoers the option of riding their bikes and locking them at this entrance.
The sign has a Cow and the words "MOOvin'" on the Monon to the Fair.

Omemee Ontario Canada. This is the old Canadian National Railway line that used to run through our area. Several years ago, CNR decided to stop running trains in various parts of the Country/Provinces. In Ontario, those old railbeds were eventually given over to community groups who were willing to take on the cost and effort of removing all the old rails and turning the routes into hiking/biking/ skiing/snowmobiling trails. The Rotary noted on the sign is an international community service organization that raises funds strictly to turn them back to their various communities in ways that support the local area in many different aspects. This project is the result of one such fundraising effort. The local Rotary club took over a large section of the railbed and turned it into a really nice hiking trail that joins up with sections both North and East, taken over by other community organizations. You could potentially (if you had the energy!)hike this trail for over 100 kms.

18-Nov-05
This trail is so new it doesn't even have a name that anyone I have talked to is aware of. It runs on what had been an industrial rail spur roughly a block west of main street in Chambersburg, PA. The coordinates are for the Commerce Street terminus. Currently the length is only about 1 to 1.5 miles with apparent plans to extend northward from the spot in the picture. The blurry green sign in the photo says the trail is closed from dusk to dawn. I was surprised to find this after making a wrong turn in town. #86

17-Nov-05
The Longleaf Trace starts out in Hattiesburg, MS and runs about 40 miles west along the old railway line. The hopes are to run about the same distance east to hook up with Natchez. This is just one of the "stations" along the route. The LT is a fantastic getaway and there are quite a few caches located along its route.

The sign speaks for itself. The Railway trail is indeed a hiking trail that has been claimed from an old railway line. It's located in Ruskin, British Columbia.

12-Nov-05
Found this on a a detour of the main roads....

12-Nov-05
This is the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail, opened in 1999, built along a segment of the former Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad. One of the primary uses of this former rail line was transport of phosphate from Florida’s inland mining district to deep-water ships at Boca Grande. According to the Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce, it also served to bring "rich northerners" to build up the area. Wink
Today, the rails are gone and very nice 5.5 mile paved trail is in its place. The southern end of this old right of way is the Boca Grande Bike Trail.

There are currenty two geocaches placed on this beautiful nature trail.

Thanks, Tom and Chickie

The Nicky Line opened in 1877 and used to support the straw plait trade in Hemel Hempstead and Luton. In 1979 the line finally closed down altogether. It now offers a hedgedlined haven for cyclists and walkers for approximately 8 miles.
This photo is from a notice board close to the midpoint of the 'Railway path'.

We found this old railway in Hösel, Germany.

This is the south end of the Hammond Trail, which runs along the old Humboldt Northern Railway line. The trail begins at an old railroad bridge across the Mad River, proceeds north through McKinleyville, CA, and ends at Clam Beach County Park, about 5 miles north. There's currently a gap of about 1/2 mile, the "Hole in the Hammond", which may eventually be filled.
Originally there was a covered wooden bridge here, built in 1905 and used until 1942, when it was replaced by the steel truss bridge.
The signs along the trail don't mention that it used to be a rail line, but here are a few websites that give some of the history:

This is the Centennial Trail Trailhead Sign at Machias (Snohomish County) WA. We've walked several sections of this trail, but today we were just out Geocaching. The Centennial Trail is constructed on the original railway right-of-way built north of Snohomish by the Seattle, Lake Shore, and Eastern Railroad (S.L.&E.) in 1889. In 1892 the Sumas Branch line between Snohomish and Arlington was purchased from S.L.&E. by Northern Pacific and later sold to Burlington Northern in 1970. Operation ceased on the Hartford- Edgecomb section in 1972 and on the Snohomish- Hartford section in 1987. The railroad provided local and international mail, freight, and passenger service. Today it's a paved and popular trail that runs from Snohomish, WA to Arlington, WA. Plans are in the works to extend the trail north from Arlington to the Skagit/Snohomish County line.

This trail rail is located in Sauerland, Germany. Start and end stations are:

Frielinghausen - Schmallenberg (21 km)

Please see map link for location details. Coordinates are from start point in Frielinghausen.

This biketrail is pretty new: They finished paving last week. During the last 10 years a local group called SMEisenbahn e. V. tried to preserve this rail as railway but without success. Now it is a very nice biketrail which I will use very often (already did several times during construction).

Found this near a cache in Greenfield, Indiana.
This Hoosier Rails to Trails follows former Pennsylvania Railroad line from just south of Greenfield's downtown area to more wooded, rural areas east of the city. Walking distance to downtown, several eateries & other services. Crosses Brandywine Creek, presumed site of Riley's "old swimmin hole"; parallels Old National Road (US40).

I found this rail trail when I was chasing a multi-cache that used one of the former stations as a waypoint. It turned out that the cache was also on the trail: under a bridge (how original! Smile). This rail trail is in West Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Thanks to Jackie and Bob for the cache.

The Santa Fe Bicycle Trail goes along the Old Santa Fe Railway from Palmer Lake, CO 25 miles or so to Colorado Springs. It deviates from the old rail bed in a few places, most notably along 7 miles on the property of the US Air Force Academy. But then it picks the old rail line back up. The photo from above is on Academy property.

This is the multi-use John Wayne Pioneer trail, which is part of the Iron Horse State Park/John Wayne Trail that reaches from Puget Sound-tropolis to Idaho. This is the South Cle Elum trailhead. This rail line was run by the Milwaukee, Chicago, St Paul and Pacific railway. Information about the entire length of trail can be found at http://www.parks.wa.gov/trails.asp. I don't think you will accept this one because I could not find a sign for this old CNR rail bed located outside of Sioux Lookout Ontario near the smaller community of Alcona. The main line is about 1km north of this rail bed and is still in use today. This particular rail way bed is currently being used by the Ontario Snowmobile Association and the way that I found it was through a friend of mine who lives and snowmobiles in the Sioux Lookout area.

I was out caching today with two friends in Bedford, Indiana and we did a series of caches located along this trail that was formally a rail road track. I appreciated the fact that this secton of track had been a straight and level run because I had to run to catch up to my caching partners.

This is the Cuckoo Trail at Polegate, East Sussex, UK.

The information leaflet may be found here:
http://www.wealden.gov.uk/Tourism_Leisure_Culture/Leisure/Cuckoo%20Trail.pdf

The following is an extract:

The Cuckoo Trail is owned by Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council but this ‘cycle/pathway’ was not originally built for this purpose.
Opened in 1880, the Cuckoo Line was the Polegate to Eridge railway, carrying milk, livestock and animal feed as well as passengers. It was named the Cuckoo Line after the tradition that the first cuckoo of spring was heard at Heathfield Fair. Although it was a busy line it eventually closed due to the cuts made by Dr Beeching in 1968.
The Cuckoo Trail is 11 miles long joining three of the district’s towns, Heathfield, Hailsham and Polegate. It also passes through the villages of Horam and Hellingly. The Trail has an extension to the south of Polegate which joins to Hampden Park in Eastbourne forming part of the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 21.

The 'Haliburton Rail Trail' runs along an abandonned rail line originaly belonging to the Victoria Railway of 1878. The line ran from Lindsay, Ontario north to Kinmount and on to the town of Haliburton as the attached photo explains. The portion from Kinmount to Haliburton is now known as the Haliburton Rail Trail and is available through the year to Hikers, Cyclists, Horse Riders, as well as ATVs and Snowmobiles. Only through constant supervision has this trail existed to satisfy all outdoor users. The only sign at the Haliburton 'trailhead' pertains solely to the ATV traffic.

This is the Ballarat - Skipton Rail Trail
It is in Victoria, Australia, near Ballarat and runs for 54 km

The trail goes through significant remnant native grasslands at the Ballarat and Skipton ends of the trail, and 17 notable bird species have been recorded. There are also historical gold mining sites. An impressive trestle bridge near Newtown is open for trail users.

The committe of management is formed by the Golden Plains Shire and the City of Ballarat. Reports in April 2005 indicate that the trail surface is better than earlier years.

This is the Johnson Creek Trailhead of the Springwater Corridor. I ride my bike and walk the trail regularly. History
The Springwater Corridor is a former rail corridor; the Springwater Division Line was developed for rail service in 1903. By 1906, under a joint ownership with Portland General Electric and the Portland Railway Light and Power Company, the line reached its peak usage. By 1910, the company had six electric plants and 161 miles of rail, carrying 16,000 passengers each year on a city-wide system.

In addition to passengers, the rail hauled farm produce to Portland markets. It was at this time the line acquired the name "Springwater Line," probably because of the planned connection to the community of Springwater on the Clackamas River. It was also known as the Portland Traction Company Line, the Cazadero Line, and the Bellrose Line.

Many communities developed along the Springwater Line including Sellwood, Waverley Heights, Eastmoreland, Woodstock, Errol Heights, Lents, Powellhurst-Gilbert, and Pleasant Valley. Towns that developed along the line include Milwaukie, Gresham, Boring, Eagle Creek, Estacada, and Cazadero. During the peak of the railroad era, the Springwater Line was the linkage between these communities. To encourage weekend use, the rail corporation developed destination parks along the line such as Oaks Amusement Park on the banks of the Willamette River in Sellwood. These parks became major attractions, drawing thousands of passengers each weekend. Passenger service was discontinued in 1958.

The Corridor was acquired by the City of Portland in 1990. Master planning for the Corridor began in 1991, and included active participation by citizens, agencies, organizations, and municipalities, including Portland Department of Transportation; Oregon Department of Transportation; the cities of Gresham and Milwaukie; Metro; Clackamas and Multnomah counties; the 40 Mile Loop Land Trust; and the Johnson Creek Corridor Committee. Construction of the Portland segment of the trail began in October 1995 and was completed September 1996.

The Corridor is part of a larger trail system: on the west side of McLoughlin Blvd, it parallels the Willamette River to the eastside industrial area; south of Boring it continues to Estacada. (The trail through Gresham was built in 1996 and an additional mile east of Gresham was built in 2000.) Future plans include trail construction between the Ross Island and Sellwood Bridges. Full funding is in place to build three bridges over McLoughlin Blvd., the Union Pacific railroad tracks (just east of McLoughlin), and Johnson Creek. The addition of the 10.8 mile section south of Boring to Estacada, currently held by the State, offers the real possibility of a trail connection to the Pacific Coast Trail through Mt. Hood National Forest.

Cinder Path - Chariton, Iowa

It's been a long time since I have been on this path. Biked it with my Girl Scouts many years ago.

I was doing some research on the path to get permission to place some caches there and found out that it is a "Rails-To-Trails" area.

Had a Girl Scout leader's meeting tonight in Chariton, so thought it would be a good time to pick this cache up.

This is the info that I found about the Cinder Path.
With the purchase of the abandoned railroad right-of-way from the Burlington Northern Railroad Company in 1974, the Cinder Path became the first "Rails-To-Trails" area in the State of Iowa. Beginning on the western edge of Chariton and ending in Humeston, the trail meanders for 13.5 miles through river, woodland, prairie habitats and over a covered bridge. Open to the public year round, the smooth cinder surface and even grade make the Cinder Path ideal for hikers, bikers and snowmobilers.

I'm not sure why this one took me so long to log. I use this trail all the time since it's like out my back door practically. This trail runs from the town of Warren PA along the river through North Warren and currently ends near the Warren Mall. There have been plans to expand this trail in the future.......but they have been put on hold for quite some time.

This rail line was orinally built in the late 1800's for the Dunkirk, Allegheny Valley and Pittsburgh Railroad. It has severed several different railroad companies before it fell out of use. I remember it still being functional as late as the late 1980's. Actually an engine derailed next to my friends house once.

There are several caches hidden along this rails to trails line as well. If you would start in Warren and ride, skate, run or walk to the Mall you could pick up a minimum of 4 caches....and with little effort another one or two.

These coords are close to the end of the trail. The trailhead and parking are at N 38 26.043 W 105 15.893. The railroad ran west from Canon City Colorado along the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge. Just outside of Canon City the railroad made several tunnels through the rock. The railroad moved closer to the river and the railbed became a road and then recently it became a trail.

I looked for a sign on this greenway, but no luck. It is obvious by the photo that the railway was turned into a greenway. This was part of the Southern Railway in Bristol, Virginia.

We were just geocaching [:D)].

The West County & Rodata Trail follows the railway of the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railroad (P&SR) Company. This trailhead is in Sebastopol, California, just a few steps away from the P&SR Depot. We were here to log the locationless (GC43BE) of Depot which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places when we happened to spot this trail marker across the street. The railroad's heyday was between 1900-1949. The "Trails to Rails" part is the whole West County Trail; this part of the West County Trail is named in honor of a man named Joe Rodata.

Thanks for the cache!
