Botanical Garden located in downtown Prestonsburg KY, honoring Jenny Wiley. Flora is lacking this evening as the 25 degree weather makes it tough on flowers and such. Visited here this summer. Tonight area is decorated with festive lights for the holidays.
Jean "Jenny" Sellards was born in Pennsylvania in about 1760, the daughter of Hezekiah Sellards and (Ukn) Brevard. The family migrated to Walkers Creek, Tazwell County, Virginia (now Bland County, Virginia) where Jenny met and married Irish immigrant Thomas Wiley, in 1778.
The couple erected a log cabin, where their first four children were born. (It is considered by most reputable researches that names given to the Wiley children killed at Walkers Creek, and in captivity, are given by tradition only, and not by documented fact.)
Late one fall afternoon, probably in 1789, a group of renegade Indians stormed the Wiley cabin while Thomas was on a hunting expedition. Jenny, expecting their fifth child, watched as her young brother and all but her youngest child were brutally murdered. Jenny and the surviving child were taken captive by the Indians. Shortly after the capture, that child was also murdered, as was the child Jenny was expecting, shortly after its birth.
After many months in captivity, Jenny managed to escape and make her way to safety at Harmons Blockhouse in Floyd (now Johnson) County, Kentucky. She returned to Walkers Creek where she was reunited with Thomas, and began a new family. Eventually, the Wiley family crossed the Big Sandy once more, and settled permanently in current Johnson County, Kentucky, near Paintsville and the blockhouse that had been her salvation after her escape.
Five children were born to Jenny and Thomas after her escape. Over the years, thousands of their descendants have been enumerated.
Jenny's story is one of sheer faith, courage, determination, stamina, and tenacity that has captured the hearts and minds of everyone who has heard her story.

This is the "Lowveld Botanical Gardens" at Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. It is also the location of the virtual cache GC31AA "food for thought". There are small, living furry animals, but they are very shy. The photo is not good, but behind the railing is a vervet monkey - a troop have made their home in the gardens, and the river alongside.

Botanical and Experimental Garden of the Radboud University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
The Botanical and Experimental Garden of the Radboud University of Nijmegen pays special attention to the family of Solanaceae and maintains the most extensive ex situ plant collection of non-tuberous Solanaceae species in the world. The conservation of the genetic resources of the Solanaceae is of great importance, since many Solanaceae species provide for important sources of food, medicin and ornamental crops, but in addition several species have served well in pioneering biotechnology, genetic engeneering and genetic analysis. The Botanical and Experimental Garden of the Radboud University of Nijmegen has opted for the conservation of Solanaceae species within the framework of the decentralised National Plant Collection of the Botanical Gardens in The Netherlands. Worldwide collaboration and/or exchange has been established, especially with international institutes with Solanaceae germplasm collections.

This is the botanical garden in Lviv, Ukraine.
When I visited Lviv a couple of years ago, the garden was closed for renovations. Now, it appears to be open for visitors.
Lviv is a city in West Ukraine, just 50 miles from the Poland (EU) border.
Lviv has gone by many names in the past:
Pre World War I, it was known as Lemberg, when it was under Austro-Hungarian rule.
Between World War I and World War II, it was known as Lwow during its time under Polish rule.
From 1945 to 1992, it was called Lvov, while under Soviet occupation.
From 1992 until the present, it is known as Lviv, which is the Ukrainian variant.

As a current staff member and alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin, I am pretty familiar with the campus. I was suprised to see that no one had bothered to log the botanical garden located just North of the Main Building. There are tons of foilage being cared for by the botany nuts in Natural Sciences. There are also 3856928741304714 turtles of all shapes and sizes in the surrounding ponds. Great place for a relaxing lunch or a study break.
I thought this would be the first one in Lisbon, but I didn't found any log for this. It's located near Av da Liberdade and Bairro Alto in Lisbon. It's a must visit!!

I hope this one still counts...it would make up for my disappointment to find that this privately-owned, but publicly accessible botanical garden has closed, likely last Christmas (note the deer in the one photo). I came here about 10 years ago with a friend and quite enjoyed the paths and well-signed flora. Today, I followed the road signs to Brickman's Botanical Gardens, near Sebringville, Ontario, to find a closed facility that is in a state of disrepair. I don't know if it was costs or the age of the owner that forced it's closing, but very sad to see numerous things growing untended through the fences.
Rexy and I were just starting our long journey home, after completing the pilgrimage to the Original Stash and Project APE caches. Pulling out of the small town of Silverton, OR (after departing the even smaller town of Mt. Angel, where we were visiting my parents for Oktoberfest), we spotted signs for "The Oregon Garden".
We followed them, pulled in, and found an LARGE botanical garden, complete with the nearby Gordon house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. http://www.oregongarden.org/WYS_gordonhouse.html
