Found on our overnight trip to Nina Hut. Cache was wet inside. Got some water out. Log is still ok. Thanks.

19-Nov-23
Nice easy find here on our way back from Nina Hut. Great to see the old log book with longer logs in. The people we saw at the previous cache came by and I was all ready to explain geocaching to them this time but they didn't seem to notice me! I mentioned it to them when walking past them again and they already knew what it was Smile Thanks for placing and maintaining an old cache, always so cool to think of these caches being here and bringing joy to people for 20 years!

Nice quick hunt as we got started on a Ranger tramp. 7 Ranger Guides and 1 other leader along for the ride

Didn't take long to locate thanks to the hint. Tftc

Nice to get out for a bit of a walk. Hint made for a relatively easy find. Tftc

Last time we came through here we could not stop as we were towing a caravan but today to were heading the other way so has space to pull over and check out the parking at the lodge. Was plenty of parking for the caravan. So we got to walk up my valley.

A nice quick find. Was great getting a cache with my name in. Thanks for placing.

#21884. We've been meaning to stop for this one for some time (it is/was the 8th oldest unfound South Island cache for me), and today we finally made time to stop. The short walk was a bit more challenging than expected (swing bridge, lots of tree roots, steep track section to get to the top of a terrace). Didn't take too long to spot a likely hint object. Pretty wet inside the cache, but thankfully the replacement log can still be signed. Was standing at GZ when a tramping party (parents and kids) came by (they probably wondered what I was doing a few metres off the track). TFTC.

StreetWalkerNZ was keen on looking for this old cache on our trip back from Nelson to Chch. We had made a few detours on our trip (caching related of course) so arrived at the parking area a bit later than anticipated.
I was a little reluctant, even though the weather was perfect, but he promised that even if we arrived home after 6pm (coffee cutoff time), he would still make coffee for me Razz. OK then,. let's go.
I'm not keen on swing bridges and this one was particularly nasty looking. It makes the terrain more to a 5 for me Sad. It didn't take too long to find the cache, despite the well disguised hint object. TFTC.

02-Oct-22
Great size container, unfortunately, it was full of water. The logbook was ok, the first zipbag was full of water, the second was wet, the third OK, but the logbook was a bit damp. Easy find at GZ, nice walk, we headed to the hut yesterday and grabbed most of the caches on our way back. Thanks for placing and maintaining this!

13-Aug-22
Paddle chick and I searched for ages then decided to read the hint which we quickly found
Thanks rediguana

#11,157. We were heading back to Nelson after a weekend in Christchurch. I have seen there was an old cache hidden on this side track during previous trips through the pass and was keen to stop. But weather and time were against me. Today the weather was OK and we still had plenty of time. So parked and crossed the swingbridge. Lovely beech forest here. Enjoyed the walk to GZ. Once there the cache was found in the first place checked. Bit damp inside. Drained out the water. Signed the logbook and rehid the cache where found. Thanks rediguana for the cache. Great to find another of your caches.

15-Apr-22
Anther quick find and good hint. Cache pretty wet but log dry. TFTC

Nice quick find on a day walk to Nina hut for lunch

Found it on our way back from Nina Hut. TFTC!

Thanks Malta-Dinger

Stopped on the way to West Coast. I especially liked the swing bridge and the springy ground on the way to this cache.
There was water in the container - poured it out. How does it get so wet? (Especially considering that paddle chick poured out water just earlier today as well!?)
Getting to the logbook is like peeling an onion - so many layers! Water was inside the layers as well but the logbook in the center was reasonably dry.
Discovered that someone else had found this today - greetings to Paddle Chick!

On the way back to the road a very curious and friendly Robin followed us for some time.

I'm always up for a trail run, and this was great fun even with the light rain. A great bit of track and nice view back across the river. Left a token

20-Jul-17
Away for a few days holiday during the school break. After a couple days in Westport and then Richmond for a couple days...a bit of a family catch up. Not much time for caching - family nitter natter and letting the wee dudes play with the cousins! Heading for Hamner for a night before home (CHCH)...after finding the nearby Lewis National Park MrsTG spied this cache and the word "swingbridge"...so we doubled back, parked up at the deer stalkers hut & walked in. Fantastic bridge, way cool track through the tree's, and a great big cache. Nice one! Not too much time for caching along the way due to traffic, road works and rain!

11-Jul-17
Walked 40m along the track from the swing bridge and in the mud on the track is a Kiwi footprint. That made my day! The predator trapping must be working. Keep it up. Swing bridge, bush walk and wild life. Thumbs up from me.

06-Feb-17
I went down to Ashburton with TaybeeDragon to pick up a car and spent the long weekend exploring, one box at a time. Now it's home time.

The dragon and I seem to come past this was often and twice we almost stopped but missed the parking places. This time I was ready. Parked, got out, checked the GPS... and suddenly realised it was on the wrong side of the river. I'd be happy to wadde, but that is one big cliff. I could go around... may be the track does? zoom out on the GPS and hey! there's a bridge!
Interesting to see how the Nina is carving away the cliff. the track is gone on one section, and it looks like the deerstalkers once had an access track up to here from directly opposite their lodge.
The dragon found the cache without too much trouble, not bad as the cache was not actually in the GPS, so we ended up hunting from the cellphone, with name and coords only - no description, no hint.
A favourite for me - I love a decent pretty bush walk. Also a path tag and an emerald.

28-Dec-16
Mr i-got it decided to take the opportunity for a bike ride on the highway while I and the adult kids went for the walk. Daughter decided to take the opportunity for a trail run so off she headed with a turn around time of 15 minutes while son and I had a pleasant stroll. Once at GZ it didn't take too long to locate the cache and the nicely dried out and bagged log book. This cache was one of my targets this holiday so it was nice to find it.

04-Dec-16
On our way to Takaka and this was one of our carefully chosen stops - a short walk to stretch our legs, a vintage cache and of course we've read about the conservation effort in the Nina Valley so a good chance to glimpse the area.

Parking at the NZDA hut you will see beside the main road: S 42 28.196 E 172 23.862
Waypoint for suspension bridge: S 42 28.113 E 172 23.865

An easy find (for Mr D who doesn't need a GPS to spot the obvious) and, yep, they did proper caches in those days. Original logbook makes good reading! We took the logbook with us on holiday, leaving a replacement logbook for anyone else who might visit. Then on our way back (Sat 17 Dec) we had an excuse for another quick stroll to return the dried out original logbook, with extra snaplock bags to keep it that way. Thanks for the fun rediguana - a lovely place well worth a visit!

This is one of my favourite tramps and the cache before getting back to the car was a bonus. As I walked back down from the Nina Hut where I had spent the last 2 nights I thought it was probably about time for me to zoom in to gz and figure how much further down the track I needed to go; you can imagine my surprise when it showed me as being within 12m! Gps was spot on within a couple of meters and hint was not necessary. There was a bit of water in the container and log was damp though not unusable. TFTC and a fav from me

02-May-16
Lots of mossy stumps around but found it eventually TFTC

27-Mar-16
Great camping spot half way to the hut. Log is quite damp but still functional. TB in...wonder when it will get out.

19-Dec-15
On the way up the valley to the hut...been past this spot lots times but only looked for cache this time, thanks

out and about collecting caches for our Jamar challenge, a good find, thanks for placing this cache

On the way from Hanmer to Reefton we found this box.

Thanks from Switzerland Flims, Laax, Falera

04-Sep-15
On the way from Hanmer Springs to Reefton we searched some caches. One of these was this box. Thanks for hiding

28-Mar-15
This is the third time I have been into the Nina hut so I was determined to find the cache this time. The first time I came here was pre-geocaching days, the second time we had an old GPS as we were just starting geocaching. Today was my lucky day. Coverage was not great, but with the help of the hint spotted a likely location and bingo there it was. A great weekend to be out tramping. Thanks for placing a cache here.

21-Mar-15
On an epic caching mission with Surveybase to North canterbury, Waipara, Culverdon, Springs Junction, Reefton, Greymouth, Arthurs Pass and back to Rangiora over two days. Final count for the weekend was Saturday 124 caches, Sunday 80 caches. not a bad weekends work. sorry for the cut and paste but it would take forever to log them all. Loved the walk across the swingbridge and the quiet walk throught he forest to GZ. Found pretty quickly but GPS was playing up a bit. TFTC.

For the sake of sanity Wink we set off with sonia26642 for a crazy geocaching trip, aiming to cache until we drop. The main destination was Nelson and the ‘surrounding’ area, but then we ended up covering a few miles in three northernmost regions, plus a few in Canterbury. We were signing/stamping the log as 'Team Polak' or ‘TP’ for the two of us on this trip to save logbook space. We found a lot of different caches, city ones, road side, park side, up a hill and on an island, and we enjoyed every single one of them. It was good to be a professional thingfinder for a few days!

We took the Lewis Pass route on the way up, and encountered all kinds of silly weather, including snow and hail. We did consider turning around and following the highway, but it ended up being ok – we just had to drop a few caches as there was no way of getting there in the knee high snow…

Very nice walk here to stretch the legs!!!

We had great fun and are grateful to all CO’s who placed caches for us to find, and help restore our sanity before returning to our other non-geocaching lives!!

This was one of the most epic weeks ever, and definitely my most epic caching week ever.

Me and mum headed up on a holiday north to Nelson and very wider surrounds. In total during the trip, we found almost 500 caches! (470 odd I think, but final results are yet to be in! ) We covered about 3000 odd km I think too. Crazy! And had our absolute best caching day ever too at 160 found. Spend 9 days travelling, caching, and having the best time ever!!

So sorry about not so epic logs, as otherwise this would probably take me the rest of my life to log, especially with two big events to organise coming up! Eeek!!

Didn't realise this was such an old one till I was reading the logs on the way there! - Cool!

Consec caching day # 699

A bit of a delay logging but:
Found while in the area with Rincewind3 (the keen one) and NZGecko (not always so keen but was happy to help look today). Impressed with the spongy ground, I wonder if the rest of the track is like that? [;-)]
TFTC

24-Aug-14
Found this a while back with Mum and Dad (Not Manly Jack and Rincewind3). We found others too but I can only log non-premium ones. We still want to come back and go right in to the hut.

24-Aug-14
We plan to stay in the hut one of these days. Today we just used this cache as an excuse to get a taste of the track. Cache easily found, hint still good even after all these years. The cache however, could do with attention. The container is fine but the contents a bit wet. The swaps bag is the worse of the two but even the logbook is a bit damp. Maybe the next finder could bring dry bags and a towel?

24-Aug-14
See my found it log. Maybe someone could take it to the hut and dry it by the fire? I assume there's a fire in the hut. Wink

27-Apr-14
Quick find nice walk tftc

27-Apr-14
That is one old caches. I see in the book cache was placed in 2001 but registered on this site for 2003. One of the oldest and doesn't get the credit. Last time I was here it rained so much I didn't pick it up and was also turned back by high rivers. This time not wet at all. Tftc.

19-Oct-13
Loved the swingbridge and Chelzea had to take a couple of photos. Bit more of a walk than it shows on the map but good to have another leg stretching exercise. Ccahe was found quickly once GZ was reached TFTC

19-Oct-13
Found with Sevren. tftc

10-Oct-13
Hope this is the one we found, a bit damp.

27-Jul-13
Nice and short walk, just wonder when you find the time to move it up the valley. Logbook a bit damp, but not really a surprise on the westcoast. TFTC

07-Apr-13

24-Feb-13
Found with MofNJojo. A nice walk through the trees to the cache Smile TFTC

08-Feb-13
Found this cache on the way back home after caching trip to Lake Daniels and Lewis Pass Tops. Loved the wire bridge leaving it with a vaguely unsteady walk. Cache is a little damp but not disintegrating - Log easily signed. TFTC

03-Feb-13
We followed the GPS rather than the track (not a good idea). After a steep climb up a hill we found it. We were filling out the log when a couple of trampers walked right past us - they didn't even see us.

31-Dec-12
not today

05-Nov-12
Cache condition noted. Will fix when I next pass by in a few weeks Smile Cheers Gav

03-Nov-12
Bagged this one on the way up to the Devils Den Bivouac. Log book and pen were very damp. Replacements and some silica would be a useful addition for anyone visiting in future. TFTC!!

29-Sep-12
Great bridge. Grabbed and signed the log just in time, a big group of conservationists were coming along checking the traps. Nice landscape around here, thanks!

A gorgeous day to be passing through the mountains on the way north for my sister's 50th. Enjoyed the pleasant walk to GZ and back. Cache quickly spotted. TFTC.

06-Apr-12
Walked in for a picnic lunch at GZ. The forest floor was really dry, no rain for a while. Thanks for the choice lunch stop.

30-Mar-12
Wasp nest on trail not far from here. The hut was a great sight after 4 1/2 hours walking with young ones.

31-Dec-11
Great little walk to the cache.

A new track has been made and marked in the usual orange triangle way but hasn't been very well worn in yet. The clearer but not marked track has a slip on it, still able to be negotiated. The new one is probably nicer anyway and joins with the old one well before GZ.

09-Dec-11
That's what I like geocaching for!
Very nice location. Pure nature and a Walk we never would have done without the "passion" geocaching.

Thank you for showing us this place.

22-Nov-11
A quick find on a trip from Christchurch to the West Coast today. Loved the walk in - the river was raging after heavy rain and and was very impressive. However the bank near the start of the track is becoming undercut, and a fresh slip a little further on up the hill has taken away one corner of the track where it turns but it is still negotiable without problems. I'd love to come back here some time and explore further up this valley. Signed log, TFTC!

23-Oct-11
Walked as far as the swingbridge got nice and muddy. Great location

21-Oct-11
POOR GPS SIGNAL TOOK ME THE WRONG WAY FIRST BUT ENDED AT THE SWINGBRIDGE EVENTUALLY. TFTC

19-Mar-11
A stunning spot and we had an amazing weekend tramp into Nina hut. We wandered in via the true right track, over the bridge and came back down via the true left track. Nina hut is superb, amazing location perched on a knoll above the valley. TFTC.

13-Feb-11
Wow, this is an older one. Nice to grab it as I've probably driven past it once or twice. Thanks.

22-Jan-11
Quick easy find on a walk into the Nina Hut. Meet some DoC officers and volunteers who had released some Kiwi in the surrounding hills. Awesome walk were followed by about six Riflemen. No Bush Robins though?

07-Jan-11
dog did not go over bridge so had to leave in car. been so far up valey before but must go to the hut one day, easy find, although there are lots of stumps around.

Good fun crossing the 'one-person-at-a-time' swingbridge. Plenty of erosion along the riverbank as a result of the recent heavy rains. Good coordinates, so a quick find. SL. TFTC.

02-Dec-10
Wow, 28 degree afternoon on the wya back from Nelson to Christchurch. Been casting my eyes to this one for a year and today ahd time to stop and take "a stroll", even if that meant wet feet.
So peaceful.

18-Nov-10
Another good spot for a short walk to break the trip between Nelson and Christchurch. Nice to read of the environmental efforts of the local school too. TFTC, Biggles.

A great spot to stop and to travel over another swing bridge Smile Must be real challanging for some people! Thanks for placing this cache and we enjoyed our walk to break our trip south to the caching event.

07-Nov-10
This was one on the ;ist to do on our way to ChCh mainly cause I have been challenging myself to do more swing bridges and harder tracks - so was pleased to get the first swing bridge of the day done and loved the walk on the other side - neat views and beech forest - more photo ops !!!! signed log enjoyed the cache thanks Smile

23-Oct-10
Have tramped up this Valley several times. It is also a great place for fungi in autumn.

06-Oct-10
Found this cache during my travel from Chistchurch to Mapua. I love this place, thank you for showing me!

11-Sep-10
Caching with gracie7 and Mum on the way to Hanmer Springs, 10/18 for the day. I still dont know if the bridge was freaky or fun. TFTC

11-Sep-10
Caching with Ariestiger and my Mum on the way on Hanmer Springs for a caching weekend so I was glad to get a second chance at this one. We found the bridge no problem this time and the cache was an easy find. TFTC and also to BaldEd for the great laugh.

24-Apr-10
Caching with Ribsc, my Mum and nephew Ben on the way to ChCh from Moneydork's Easter event in Springs Junction.
I dont know where we went wrong but we couldnt find the bridge Sad Maybe we missed the entrance, the closest we got was 54m away and there was no bridge in sight. This is actually the first time I have been to ChCh via the Lewis pass and dont see us returning this way in the near future.

24-Apr-10
Heading back to CH CH after Moneydork's 6th Massive Easter Egg Hunt we stopped by here.As the weather was rather wet,Mr Womble T dashed in by himself. The wire walkway was a bit slippery and he was glad Mrs Womble and Bonnie our Geodoggie wasn't tagging along. It didn't take him that long to find the Cache, and soon had it in hand..Nice track to walk.TFTC.

02-Mar-10
On the way back from Nina Hut,two of us searched a 20m area, but although we investigated many of the hint objects did not find the cache. The signal was not that flash the day we looked, and I did not get another chance as we were away up the Hope before going to the St James walkway a couple of days later.

Enjoyed the break in our trip to Nelson. Ground frozen solid so didn't get wet feet!

this was a awesome bridge crossing thanks heaps!!!

20-Jun-09
Found this cache on our way home from Nelson and the ground was very frosty. Picked up the travel bug. Left two books.

20-Jun-09
Found on return trip Nelson to CHristchurch. Amazed that snow was still lying on the ground along the river track. There had been several hard frosts and the mud was still frozen. The swing bridge was icy and a bit scary to cross. Heard boulders crashing into the river which we thought were muggles at first.

08-May-09
Swung across the bridge and tripped up the track to find this one. Left an aeroplane and TB Red Campervan. Thanks Cool

12-Apr-09
First we tried to straight-line this cache from SH7. Soon realised this is not the way. Went up the road a bit further and found the track. Nice walk in to GZ. TFTC

Thank you. David and Noeline.

25-Jan-09
Took the long way to get this one. Tramped up the Doubtful River and spent Saturday night on Devil Skin Saddle. Came back out down the Nina River and found the cache on the way out. TFTC nice finish to great weekend.

10-Jan-09
This was an interesting and fun little stop over. I couldn't believe it when I turned a corner in the track near to the cache and there were 2 trampers sitting having lunch but another turn and they were out of site. They were very surprised to see me returning from my "walk" so quickly.TFTC (288)

26-Dec-08
Our cache of the day!!! Awesome swing bridge, loved the walk, and GPS spot on (even under all the trees!) A really enjoyable walk and cache that the whole family really enjoyed - thanks heaps!

21-Dec-08
Nice walk in the bush, Ange LOVED the swing bridge (ha!). GPS went flat mere metres out from the cache, went back and got fresh battery only to find we had the right spot first time Smile Took a bit of searching, GPS jumpy in the trees, but found it soon enough. Beautiful day, lots of water of in the river after rain, fresh snow on the mountains. TNLN, TFTC
