It's day five of my 3-week bucket list road trip around South Island, and today, I'm heading from Fox Glacier to Wanaka. An unplanned detour when I spotted the virtual icon on my geo-map. Such a sad story, but a lovely drive ... thanks for the detour Pam. Answers sent.

Thank you for bringing me to this part of the country. A part I would never have visited had it not been for your cache. I took the walk to the rocky beach and wandered along the wharf to watch folks fishing. A pair of teenagers were using a crayfish tail as bait !!! Obviously locals A local pointed out I could buy a crayfish tail for $95 !!! A well worthy drive to the end of the road and a very peaceful settlement.

Of course, we took a short time to log a cache. A smiley on the map as proof of our visit. Our next Stop was in Wanaka, visiting #that Wanaka tree. There we met some fellow geocachers from Asia and together we found two Caches nearby. What a nice meeting! Thanks to this wonderful hobby.Last Stop for the day is Jackson Bay. We saw the famous Craypot on TV and had to make time for a meal. We enjoyed the local Fish and Chips a Lot. Yummy! So a Long day of driving and caching comes finally to an end.Thank you to all Cache owners for making a trip to something Special. TFTC and greetings from Germanyaussi96

Hi there PamCan. We visted Jackson Bay today, travelling from Wanaka and looking for a good meal of Fish and Chips. We were not disapointed - great food and a great view. After many scenic photos we decided to follow the Wharekai-Te Kou Walk to Ocean Beach and once again we were not disappointed. An absolutely beautiful and peaceful walk with a great view at the end. Thanks to PamCan for this cache - our find 10778 and the 1st of 1 finds for the day.FieldNotes: Answers have been sent to the CO

After years on our bucket list and three cancellations due to Covid, we are thrilled to finally be here. Following several cruises we flew from Sydney, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand to begin our next adventure. Picked up our rental vehicle and will be driving, exploring, hiking, and caching both islands for 3.5 weeks. Despite the rain we really wanted to drive this road to the end and hunt this virtual cache. Gathered the needed answers and enjoyed the view with umbrellas in hand. Our answers have been sent via the message system and we appreciate the CO developing this virtual cache. Thanks for adding to our adventure today, Nukeworker and Racquetball Girl, Arkansas, USA

Last night when I was looking along our route for today I spotted this cache. Prior to 2011 I would’ve called me coming here ‘me being curious to see what was at end of the road where you couldn’t drive any further south around the coast’. That is still true today, but now I wanted to find this old virtual. So off we set driving an extra 48 kms. It was worth it. Bridges, scenery and new history to discover. Favourite given. T so very much FTC PamCan. What a great way to entice people to find out about out of the way places in NZ.

Day 10 of the Loopppiiieee Tour (top to bottom, east to west) and now we are heading north. We have finished the Southland Loop as ItchyFeet2020 and JustLookingOO have returned to Wellington. We are targeting the TWGTs for GraciesGPSfun; as well as the PWGT, CANZ, D/T and some oldie caches for us both, as well as driving many kilometres AND, just as important, seeing the sights of the South Island and having a lot of fun.

On a road trip with downsouthinv and Abbykitt, and once we'd checked into the motel, thought it was only fair to head this way. It's been on my to visit list for a few years. The gazillion little locals welcomed us with open arms!
Great to explore this area, and find out it's history.

On a west coast oe and on our way to Nelson for a few days . My first time to travel up the west coast of the south island In 20 years so this time we get to cache our way in to uncharted territory, so let's see what fun adventures awaite us bring it on
So a quick stop in wanaka to fuel up and we work our way to haast.
After we stop in at our accommodation we head down to Jacks Bay this is my first trip this far south on the west cost .
Some of the local residents greeted us well more like a few thousand , (sandflys)
We had a quick look around before heading back to haast and the on set of rain .

Smile Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I are on a bit of a Christmas Roadtrip from Auckland to Ingill & back ... we'll be doing a few geocaches on our travels ... this being the 100th cache of hopefully many & the 1st for 2021 ... we had been spent Christmas in Invercargill & were now heading back to Auckland, taking the scenic route ... we had stayed in Haast for New Years Eve & headed down to Jacks Bay intending to do a couple of walks while waiting for the Fish'n'chip caravan to open ... we were reasonably early & the weather was not conducive to tackling the walks (cold, wet & miserable) while waiting for the caravan to open ... so we only made a quick stop here to nab the virtual cache info needed ... & take a photo of the 'Raewyn' ... same name as Mrs McMike2012 but with a different spelling ... & then it was back on the road ... answers emailed to CO ... good to add another 'smiley face' to the tally ... TFTC ... TN except photos:LN:didn't SL ... #1,834 for us.

I started my great and unique round trip over the South Island in Christchurch.
My first major stopover was at Lake Tapeko - here I hiked up to Observation Mountain.
I then planned two days in Mount Cook NP with some unforgettable hikes. My big goal was the Mueller Hut - on a super strenuous hike I reached it.
I continued my journey over the lonely Danseys Pass to Dunedin.
Afterwards I drove along the Southern Scienic Route via Invercargill to Manapouri for some days. On this route I visited many sights and enjoyed the beautiful nature again and again.
I already booked a tour to the Doubtful Sound in advance - another highlight on my tour.
Afterwards I drove on to Queensown and Wanaka. From there I continued over the Haast Pass to the lonely Jackson Bay with storm and heavy rain. Afterwards I drove along the west coast always in pouring rain.
The rain stopped the whole west coast, but I had good rainwear with me. Only high up in Nelson the sun shone again.
Soon I reached the east coast again in Picton and Blenheim and the sun was shining again.
After a few days I travelled back to Christchurch via the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
At the end of my round trip I spent a few more days in Christchurch and its surroundings.
I visited many geological sites and found many caches on my round trip. In Rangiora I visited an event.
I travelled 3418 km and take home a lot of positive experiences.
Thanks to many beautiful caches I was also shown unique locations, historical sites and geological features.
I am overwhelmed by the fantastic and ever changing nature on the South Island of New Zealand - I will definitely come back.

Many thanks to all owners

We had decided Haast was going to be our last overnight stop on a caravanning trip in the lower South Is so after setting up camp we still had plenty of time left to grab the four caches in the wider area.
Our last trip to Jackson Bay was in pre geocaching days and included a walk to Smoothwater Bay to share lunch with sandflies but today it was too late in the day to contemplate a walk anywhere so we had a look round the village before heading back to Haast.
Answers have been sent to the CO.
Thank you Pam.

Our last over night stay on a trip from Christchurch to Greymouth via Southland. The main objective was to complete logging all South Island TMTG caches but you just can't help the by-catch Big GrinBefore our geo-caching days we walked the track to Smoothwater Bay. The sandflies were so big you measured them between the eyes... Nothing of the kind today. Just memories and an interesting bit of local knowledge. Details have been forwarded to the CO. Thank you Pam

Drove out to Jackson Bay from Haast. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain when we got to ground zero, so we didn't enjoy any of the walks. Tigerlily did reward us with a coffee and non-alcoholic ginger beer from the Cray Pot. Email has been sent.
Thanks for the fun, Pam!

With a couple of scheduled days off work and the weather due to change tomorrow (for the worse), KrystalKath and I are taking the opportunity to pick up her girlfriend in Haast and continue here to Jackson Bay for the day.
Enjoyed the scenery of the drive out here. Those are massive imposing slips along the way.
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at The Cray Pot, then explored the area, walking out to the end of the pier, gathering the required info for this old Virtual, and chatting to locals and visitors.

Staying near Haast for the weekend. Had to go to Jackson Bay for fish and chips. Beautiful hot sunny day and a dead calm sea. Heaps of boats out fishing. Fisheries officer there doing his job which was great. Unfortunately he had already discovered that some fishermen/woman can't count and were taking more than their fair share.

We found this geocache while visiting this beautiful country. Today we drove from Lake Hawea to the West Coast via the Haast Pass. Along the way we took time to catch 2 geocaches. The first one was Roaring Billy Falls. We think that the path through the forrest was as impressive as the falls. The container was found rather quickly. Second and last one of today was the virtual at Jackson Bay. After collecting the data we enjoyed the view on the sea while eating and drinking in The Cray Pot. Thanks for these caches!

This was my first cache of 2019.
We stayed at Haast and wanted to see the Glaciers today, so Jackson Bay wasn't 'on the route' but we had heard of dolphins sometimes swimming here, so we made the trip and were fortunate to see them!!!!
We also had a nice early lunch and met a Spanish speaking couple from Argentina. Absolute worth the trip!
Yes, it was raining and windy - but we enjoyed it!!

*Day 10 of our amazing trip*

On our very first evening in NZ we were told by one of the locals that we should visit Jackson's Bay. So, despite not really having much time for it, that's what we did. We did not see any penguins (it wasn't really the right time of the day), but at least we had lunch at the nice orange place (whoever has been to Jackson's Bay knows what I mean) where we were eaten by sandflies. One may argue that it was not really worth all the drive, but still I liked the place, and I can imagine that it may be a rather nice area, if one gets to spend more time there.

Anyway, the answers for the VC were easy to collect and have been sent to the CO.

Thanks for the cache and greetings from Austria.

Rustynz, Rebel98 and myself Gorby are Westies from Auckland. We regularly head away on cheap flights to here and there, this time we have flown to Queenstown for a 3 day adventure of fun and caching. Rebel is our nominated driver, I navigate and rusty tells us the hints and description.

Today is our third and last day of our adventures. Sad to leave the South Island so soon, but we WILL be back - soon.

We had a nice night last night by the hot fireplace, a huge wooden log fire, chatting to various fellow residents at Haast Lodge. I gave away a hot water bottle to a young Dutch woman who happened to be sleeping out in her hired car! Brrhhh, it was cold enough in my room with the heater going all night - and I wore my clothes to bed!! We met an older British guy who moved to Australia and married an Australian woman there, nice to have met them too. That to me is one of the highlights of staying in cheap accommodation, is chatting to overseas visitors and making them welcome in NZ!!

So after hot spaghetti and sausages on toast and a good coffee for breakfast, rusty and Rebel and myself packed up and made the journey to this cache first. It was on our to-do-list due to it's age and the remote location.

We parked up at the plaque to get the required info and that will be sent off to the C.O then since it was such a very fine morning and as rusty said a golden glow, any fotos we took could only come out very well! She heard tui, I only noticed the scenery and the bridge we just had to walk out to. We dd that and took a slow walk back to our hired 4wd.

Thanks PamCan for this virtual, we really loved being here and the cache was a bonus too.

On a caching adventure with rebel98 and gorby Big Grin

After an overnight stay in Haast (cold, had to keep the layers on!)

We made the drive to Jackson Bay before 8 am, after an early breakfast.

Its a beautiful drive, the weather is perfect, and the morning sun puts a golden glow on the Bay.

Quickly we found the required information, and then went for an explore, walking along the wharf. So much history in this place, and times of hardship.

An added highlight was the bird call, it was amazing, a real symphony of bird sounds.

Thanks Pam for the virtual, and bringing us here. The answers have been sent to the CO.

After driving up to the Haast Pass this morning I decided to continue by driving South from Haast in the afternoon.

I went to have a feed of fish and chips from the café here as I had been told they were great. BUT so were the prices and they were closing up for the day so it was back to the caravan for leftover stirfry.

Cheers for the cache.

It has been in my sights for a long time & I am on road trip that I have essentially planned around claiming it !
I set off today on an expedition - with a one-way rental car - from Queenstown to Christchurch via Haast, where I am spending the night. A lovely, easy drive from Haast to Jacksons Bay.
