20/9/2023 Find #6569Day 12 of the Fangsoki/1MinnieMoo New Zealand South Island adventure. Today we head from Te Anau to Queenstown, so we made an early start. The wind was up terribly and it blew our little campervan about. Arriving in Queenstown, we decided we should head up to the Basket of Dreams first, as the weather tomorrow could be rather dubious. However Fangsoki knew of another cache along the way. An archived cache that just might still be there. We were determined to give it a good try anyway. Up we headed, and armed with whatever info we had, we began our search. We noticed a number of animal traps not far from GZ but one particular location stood out. Some searching, followed by more searching, followed by some cache page viewing, and more digging about and searching. And then it happened. IVE FOUND IT!!But it wasnt over yet. There was still the case of extraction. I tried this way, I tried that way, I tried everything but it had become entrapped in its home. I managed to remove the lid and that gave it just enough give to be able to prize it from its holdings. Yes we were excited. 3 years and 3 months since its last find, and it was still sitting pretty. A number of photos taken, names obviously signed, and then we replaced it as we had found it, tightly wedged! Now off and up that hill to the Basket! Thanks for the cache Meem.
*Radnoski wrote 07/10/2015* -:> but I did come across this cache listing with the help of a fellow cacher. And that cacher was me I was preparing to visit Christchurch for the 2015 Mega and managed to spot this cache as possibly being still there. I gave Radnoski the information as I knew he was going to Queenstown and I was very pleased when he found this one.I always kept it on my radar. I was semi-annoyed I would have walked past it back in 2011 heading up to the Basket of Dreams. 1MinnieMoo and I were back in Queenstown - so I was keen to grab this one.I had noted DNFs. I PAFed a recent-ish finder who gave me a bit of a clue. We headed off the track to look for this one. Our GZ was not making friends. Nothing to spot here. The answer to the age-old question... "where would I hide a geocache nearby to here?" was asked. I'll leave you with that tit bit Even though we had the correct GZ, it took some finding. I was very happy when I heard 1MinnieMoo had found it. We're happy to have grabbed this 20 year old cache. We placed it back as found. Hopefully, it will live one for some other archived cache finders to find.TFTC Meem - very happy to have gotten this cache after all these years
Having found most of the caches in town, i spontaneously decided to check out this suuper old archived one seeing as i was now staying relatively close by (as the crow flies at least ??)Punished my poor knees a little more with the walk to gz, then checked around everywhere nearby and not.The place is well and truly a possum graveyard, a recent macabre addition still swaying slightly closeby. ??Gave it a good going over anyway with no luck. Added to the watchlist to see if anyone else has better luck.Eventually slunk away back to town.
No luck for me. A number of traps in and around the area so could finally be gone?
Have had my watchlist eye on this archived cache since first finding out how to map archived caches on project-gc. We couldn't go to Skippers due to snow, so this walk was plan B. Turned out to be an easy find, biggest pine at the top of the bank, and so nice to sign the original 2003 logbook.
Wowza! I feel so blessed to have been told about this archived cache on the hill! After it not being found for nearly a year! Headed out this morning for the basket of dreams and was excited to look for this along the way. With the directions I was given I had the cache in hand right way- pretty well walked right up to it! Terrain is a bit steep and slippery with needles but the cache is in a great hiding spot and seems it will hang out there for ages! Imagine it’s close to 20 years old! Thanks for placing this here back in the day. It would be great if someone could bring it back even for premium members only! TFTC!
Ten days off in a row for the price of two leave days, how fabulous! Packed up the whanau for an adventure and headed south. Our original plans were slightly thwarted by water, but we made the trip into an adventure tikitour with a few caches along the way. Signing the logs as Team Polak or TP for brevity. Great fun, thanks to all the CO’s for the entertainment!!
Returned to this one equipped with some extra hints and extra helping eyes and hands. Sorted eventually, but still took some time. Cache is fine and happy! TFTC!!

We have been in Queenstown since Waitangi day and we were flying out late this morning so we were up early this morning to search for this old cache which was recommended by Lions.v.Lambs as an old archived one but still there with it original 2003 logbook. We were up the hill around 8 am after completing a walk at the other end of town to a waterfall. Approaching GZ we were greeted with two dead possums at the self resetting trap which is obviously doing a good job. Armed with a hint we ventured further into the trees and success we came up with the goods and were able to sign that old log. Good to be able to assist and confirm all is good here we the cache. Fav point added
I just could not find this one! I spent some considerable time looking, but my search turned up nothing. Every time someone was coming past I pretended to be very interested in something up the tree, and I must have been doing a pretty good job of that, as some tourists even started taking photos of the tree tops I was looking at Reluctantly, I gave up eventually... I hope not to return to Queenstown at least until the type of tourism practiced here becomes a thing of the past (and I do not mean adventure tourism as such) and people get less commercially focused, but if I do return, I will certainly retry this one!
After walking to the Basket of Dreams, a small group of Westies and Lions.vs.Lambs made there way to find this "old cache"
Now it was Lions.vs.Lambs who reached into the hidey hole, then quickly removed her hand, as she felt a soft, warm, furry body! a possum? who has been the guardian of the cache, keeping it nicely warm and snuggly
With a trusty stick, the cache was soon retrieved, and the log, which was found in perfect condition and over 15 years old
So thankyou Team Meem for hiding this cache all those years ago. A very special find of this old cache, in a beautiful part of Queenstown.
The old logs where amazing too!

After heading up to Basket of Dreams for my **6000th cache** Rebel98, rustynz and Lion.v.Lambs decided to pull in here to this archived cache. This was recommended to us Auckland Westies by Lion.v.Lambs and so while the boys stayed put, the girls didn’t and launched themselves up to go and find the cache. They came back down with smiles on their dials and so we knew the job was completed. They shared a story about a warm possum in a hole, glad I didn’t have to make that discovery! Thanks Meem for the cache.
Time has caught up with this cache container, the ETA's nut tin disintegrated when I plucked it from the hide; Old Man Pine really has some growth going on. After discovering the archived entry and reading the logs I brought in a new pot I prepared earlier before I left on my week's Odyssey of caches in the lakes district. Contents were in fair condition, added a swap and signed the log. New cache pot placed back in hide with the old blue lid in situ. TFTC Team Meem. Hoorah.

Getting into the late afternoon, carpark was full and almost all the walkers are heading downhill. Helped the little woman up the bank and pulled firstly the blue Planters lid out of the hide and then the green pot, but only slowly at an angle as the tree root had a good hold on the cache. I signed the bonza original logbook and the goods got wrapped in a tough baggy to withstand the long stay. Thanks for the cache Meem, all's well here.
I was visiting Queenstown and staying on Fernhill. There were lots of great spots for caches but no active caches near the One Mile Walk or the old pumping station. I went in search of archived caches that may still be around..... no luck with the Fernhill area but I did come across this cache listing with the help of a fellow cacher.
It was my last day in Queenstown and the rain started at 2pm and continued until just before 6pm. There was plenty of light at this hour so I decided to check out this cache and Basket of Dreams.
I started from the parking co-ords of "Basket" and soon found the spot described in the hint. The container had definitely seen better days and possibly has been squeezed by the growth of the tree over the last eight years. The logbook was sealed in a ziplock bag and was dry in it's hidey hole. I grabbed some photos of the last entry from 2007.
Thanks for the cache Meem. Great spot.
Sorry that I was not organised enough to supply a replacement container...... but there is a Mega in Christchurch this month and some fellow QLDers will be visiting. I will see what I can organise.

Visited this cache 2 years ago, before I started logging the finds, and revisited on 18/Aug/07 without using GPS or reading cache notes.Found cache in correct place but in a sorry state. Will furnish it with a new container next time in Queenstown,if someone else hasnt already done so.Have now read logs,& agree there is still life in this cache. If someone closer doesnt volunteer I would be prepared to maintain it. I am 200 Km away.
We downloaded this before owner archived, and went looking with some doubts after recent DNFs. However after some searching the container was spotted down an adjacent gully in undergrowth but exposed to view. As noted earlier the container has been cracked so log was damp but usable. We have wrapped in a plastic bag and replaced to the hidey hole we believe it had originated in.
The cache can now be put back on line, and maybe a regular Queenstown visitor or resident should adopt?
In any event next hunter could take a replcement container (similar to 1kg peanut butter size/shape) or even extra plastic bag would do.
The search area can be narrowed right down by noting direction from a couple of points on the track say 50m apart(where reception is better) and heading to the intersect point.
This is a nice spot and has life in it.
Thanks

Cache going offline due to DNFs and inability to maintain any longer. Sorry to all, please still visit this area as the hike and the views are wonderful.
I was in the area but skipped this one due to the number of recent DNFs. Perhaps the owner should check on it.
No luck after hunting around for about 30 minutes, including a fall that bruised my knee and scratched the screen of my GPS . The trees in the area make it hard to get good coordinates and I found the reference to "first draw" in the hint to be cryptic. Is this cache still there?
Was there at 11.00 hrs. Looked for more than 1 hr with gps all over the place-no joy. Looked in every possible spot. You can pass the gate from 2 directions-Itried them both.
Thanks anyway for the nice climb-up.

No joy. Good exercise going up the hill, and a good view, but the reception was awful. Looked in all likely places but didn't find anything. GPS showed several GZs 20m apart too!
Found after a grid search of the area. The container is broken and needs replaced. The contents were a bit damp and I took away the wet tea bags etc. I was not sure if the cache was in the correct spot as our clues were unreadable because our printouts got wet. It would pay to maintain this cache sometime. left some silica gel to dry out the log book. - USA pen + small shells
we found it succssefully, but was not so easy, because our GPS was quite unaccuracy {about 20m]. But fortunately our japanese friend had good eyes.

Nice find bit of a hunt. Cache container is broken and in need of repair looks like someone stepped on it. Picked up Poko Chan TB.

2nd visit, this time with a bit longer before sunset. Still could not find it. GPS a bit inaccurate here and we have no idea what a draw is? We are in Queenstown only till morning of the 12th Aug. We would appreciate more info via email. Thanks. Update 12th Aug: Got an email from GSVNoFixedAbode on 10th Aug but alas we could not get to cache until morning of 12th. But it rained all night and I'd broken my wrist on 11th (snowboarding) which all made the cache too risky.

Got onto the right trail in the area very easily but had less success finding the cache. Wandered around in what I am sure was the right area for a good hour or so but came across nothing but dead pine needles and a few bugs under rocks. Not too many muggles around so at least we got to have a good look without looking too suspicious. Reluctantly gave up the search when our 4 year old wee bean grew tired and our 6 month old baby bean in arms fell asleep.
We will be back - next time with our GPS. Meanwhile Pokochan TB will have to remain without company as Crocodile Hunter TB will now be making his next stop on his journey somewhere north of here.

I'm sure I looked there last time. I haven't decided yet whether the GPS co-ordinates or the hint it more inaccurate. I think the hint might need a bit of refining. But glad to have found it at last after causing so much frustration last time. Cache is in severe need of a new container. Alas I didn't have one with me. Cheers Gav [896]
Reinforces my idea that travel is enhanced when you drag family memebers on hikes to see areas they would other wise miss.
Took geocache coin, heading to the State.
Left Poko Chan travel bug (who is heading to Portland but took a terribly wrong turn) and Razorback sticker

Quick find, conatainer may need replacing as it is cracked. Everything is still dry inside though. + whale propellor thingy(ex Organ Pipes), - Happy TB
Sheesh, totally fluffed this one with an early morning start from the hotel in absolutlely the wrong direction. After a serious tour of Queenstown I finally got on the right track, so to speak.... yep, a steep one too!
Found cache at 8:45 am, the container is damaged and needs to be replaced.

After finishing breakfast, I started up the mountain to get this on. I started at the Kingsgate hotel and made my way up the trail to the site. Unfortunately, I only had 80 minutes for the trip and find. With my terrible GPSr reception in the cache area, I was unable to make the find. I did find, what I thought would be the right site, but time was against me. Oh well, a nice hike up the hill.
An easy find on a pleasant walk. Every cacher should go on to the top of the hill for the wonderful views. No swaps, thanks and cheers from Grandalf.
A NICE WEE WALK IT IS WELL WORTH THE EFFORT TO CARRY ON UP TO THE TOP FOR THE VIEWS WHICH ARE FREE NOT MUCH ELSE IS IN THE AREA.

On holiday in NZ so decided to try this one. Looked at our GPS and it told us it was 1km from our hotel. Decided to walk it - phew that was hard as uphill all the way!!!! Still, the views were fabulous when we got up there! GPS lost it when we got close but Mr TM came up trumps quite quickly so we were all happy. Great cache in lovely surroundings. Dropped off Pinkie the owl TB from UK - hopefully she'll fly home gradually!
Hey nice walk and views on a hot summers day, Found without too much trouble. A few Mugglers around tho. took San Diego pen. left Carabina
Quite a walk for someone who has been eating too much and exercising too little. Great view. 1st place I looked. Could it of been anywhere else? Found a cat named Tigger quietly munching on a nest of quail babies. It's a shame some people don't understand the impact of owning pets.
Visiting from Finland. After the disappointment at the nearby pipeline cache it was good to find this one. The finding itself didn't take too long, but I read the city map poorly, so I had to cruise around a bit before finding a suitable parking place, which turned out to be a bad one, since it made me walk a little extra uphill. TNLN.
Tried this one while staying at Queenstown Millenium Hotel. The walk from the hotel was exercise in itself, especially since I hadn't carefully read the cache page and strayed badly from the most direct route. In any case, I finally got into the right area, per the hints, and searched the area, but had to give up the search in the failing light as the sun set providing a beautiful Queenstown view. I enjoyed the hunt anyway. Cheers!
Our Garmin etrex was wildly misbehaving and we were continually interrupted by muggles as we searched out this one. Resorted to thinking like a cacher, and thinking like Mcroni (it helps to know this pair) and the cache location became apparent after about an hour(!)
Left gluestick, took Tan Fan the TB
Thanks again Mcroni.

This cache had us looking in a few places before the obvious one jumped out at us. The coords seemed about 10m out, but that could have been due to the tree cover. The circular walk was just too good to not complete and the views were just great. TNLN. Thanks Team Meem.
Caching our way through NZ and stopped off to grab this one on our visit to Queenstown. TN/LN. Beautiful area. Visiting from Utah, USA. Thanks for the fun! Bean Stompers
We are visitors from Holland and enjoy our stay in NZ. Even more due to the geocaching spots. This spot was a special one. Nice walk out of Queenstown. Great gate, nice words!
In: 50 eurocent. Out: Smiley. Took TB. Thanks for this one.

Fun trail, I really enjoyed the views. Glad the geocache took me to the trail. Left a travel bug from the US, and took one to carry back with me.
These two American tourists were surprised to find that another one had bagged this cache earlier the same day. Took nothing, left US$1.00.
It was a long hike UP the hill from Queenstown! If we had a car we could have started from the car park. Mostly Up, not much flat! We are from California USA and are on a tour of Australia and NZ. This is into our third week and I have been trying to find a place to drop this travel bug. We have never found a cache large enough to accept the travel bug as they were all micros, virtuals, or DNF's until now! Our list of caches were usually not close to the hotels where we were staying, nor did we have enough time to spend looking for them. Total cache count was only two for the whole trip! Bummer!!! Your cache was a life saver for the TB which we brought all the way from California ... Did not want have to take it back home ... After telling the owner that we were bringing it here! The TB's mission was to travel to far places, and could not get it much farther than here!
Took: nothing. Left Fish out of Water TB, Lizard and compass, in keeping with your theme!

It took a few minutes of looking around to spot this one. The hike up was nice on a cool morning. Thanks for the nice walk.
Long treck up from hotel to find the cache! found ok but the problem was that the box is totally empty. Left our sticker stuck in the box but did not leave the TB we intended to drop.
On holiday in New Zeaaland from the USA. Thanks for taking us here. This is a great place to hike. Wonderful views. Unfortunately one of our hikers was insured and we had to turn back. Couldn't find the cache in the time we had but I'm fairly certain we were looking in the right spot. Since this is so far from home and we're not likely to pass this way again I thought I would post a picture to show that this Yank was really here.
New Zealand is a great country: friendly people, beautiful scenery, such variety of things to see and do. Maybe I'll get to come back.

5 of us looked around for quite a while, but no luck. Non-specific clue and variable GPS reception made it tricky. Perhaps it has been muggled?
good find walked straight passed it a few times with no joy had to do some extra research then back up and found it.

Lovely spot to explore on a very frosty morning. Some difficulty getting an accurate fix with the tree cover but it was easy to find from the tree stump.

Was gonna do this one but couldn't get close enough by road - was second today involving hills (after the spending 3/4 hour trying to find Pipeline Cache without success) - g/f was not prepared to climb another hill due to "snowboarding ankle"
[Was in the area and checked this one: cache is still there and fine - will post photo and additional co-ords when back home.]
Just past the gate there's a big stump on the right (S45 01.534 E168 40.096). From there, project 20m at 32degT. Top of rock bank.

In light of recent DNF's, I'd recommend cache be temporarily archived until such time as a cache check can be made. Cheers Gav
Loved the spot, loved the gate, loved even the hill climb, didn't like the fact that we searched for over an hour and could not find. Not likely to make a return as we head up the west coast tomorrow, then Arthur's pass, CHC and Akron, Ohio.
Thanks for the challenge and plenty of great pictures!!!

It took around 45 minutes and I still wasn't able to find it. The GPS got me to the general vicinity, and I hunted in vain. Attempted to utilise the clue, but it told me little more that the GPS. I was certainly in the right area according to the clue, and saw a few footprints around. Could the cache owner please provde a more accurate hint to save time and the environment in the future? It might also be useful to have a cache check in case it has been muggled. Cheers Gav
Second attempt at this cache and junior member of the team found it - keen eyes that one! Last time we were within 2m of the cache and hadn't seen it . Good walk up the hill on a lovely sunny afternoon. Thanks for a great cache.

Spent half an hour rooting around to no avail. Will try again next time we're in New Zealand. Lovely spot though!
Satellite geometry was unfavorable when we visited the hill-the best lock we could get at any time was +/-32 m accuracy-so this took longer than we expected. When we found it we took some earplugs for the plane ride back to Canada and left a geocaching badge. Very nice reserve. Thanks for the hide!
I was looking forward to this one though it took longer than expected. I took some time to find the way through the residential streets to the track start. A problem exacerbated by having to pass frequently through the same police speed checkpoint. At the cache site, I searched the natural feature without success before resorting to the hint. This helped in that it showed I had been looking on the wrong feature but drawing a circle of radius 17m (accuracy reported by a previous bagger) I was left with a large area containing numerous hiding places. The area included the gate and I felt furtive frequently stopping to wait for muggles pass through, their presence advertised by the gate creaking. The cacol of previous hunters gave me confidence I was in the correct area but eventually decided on a DNF. Then on my way out, I saw something that did not look natural and Bob’s your uncle. My GPS recorded the site as 22m away, i.e. outside my 17m radius search area. Still a great site for a cache, thank you.
Greetings from Saudi Arabia. Poor GPS coverage meant that I had to use the hint. Looking for a tree in a wood was time consuming but luck was on my side. Muggle watching was fun. Many were well worth watching and their antics, when believing to be unobserved, very interesting. My GPS recorded the cache as 18m away from the actual site.
Another hill! We're going to be very fit at the end of this holiday. TNLN. Greg and Bev
Found it quickly, though the coords were a bit off (17 m). Nice forest and some nice views too!
I have had to visit New Zealand after some distressing news that my mother had been taken ill while on holiday. After knowing she was on the road to recovery i decided to take in some sites and try to find my first long distance cache.
I found the cache with some difficulty. I forgot the Clue and the gps was loosing signal close to the cache due to trees.
Any way found it! Took TB and left nothing.
Absolutely beautiful place. I will be back to see again.

I found the cache with some difficulty. I forgot the Clue and the gps was loosing signal close to the cache due to trees.
Any way found it! Took TB and left nothing.
Absolutely beautiful place. I will be back to see again.

Lost GPS signal close to the cache so we had to rely on the hint as well as resorting to a wide search radius. Found it after 15 minutes and a bit more climbing than expected.
Thanks !

Indeed a nice time to cache, for the sun is shining, but not to harsh yet. Had a nice walk up the hill. Could have used my car een bit further, but anyway. Thanx for this cache.
Went up Skipper's canyon earlier, but didn't make it to the cemetery, so did this one - it was a good hide! Took Tigger TB ( he boings if you push his head down!) and left a frog keychain, a Sacajawea, a mood ring, and a San Diego pen.
Thanks!
Thanks!
The weather finally cleared and we decided to go looking for this cache.
Although we used the clue we still couldn't find the cache.

qos and "Little Kitten" and nephew went geocaching. First cache for nephew. Beautiful view. OK weather when we left. Drizzling and rainy when we finished. Went all over the "hill", way to high up. The cache is not near any brambles!!! Left Tiggers Journey TB and earplugs for those going to noisy nightclubs in the area . He has had quite a trip so far. He is from Germany. Was picked up by me and "Little Kitten" on an "island" in Lower Saxony about 6 months ago. Tigger travelled to Canada, the US, Taiwan, Australia and now to New Zealand with me. Since this is his destination, why doesn't he travel in New Zealand all over the place including the north island?
Nephew picked out the electrical tape for his Dad and a pin for himself. The rest of us took nothing, except good memories.

One member of the beaver-clan found this cache. It was my first time doing geocaching and I went at least 5 times too high!!! Took the tape and am giving it to my Dad. Got really wet and dirty. Mom had to wash everything!
I looked for under a heavy rain. My GPS wasn't agree to work, so each times the coordinates were differente. After be too wet I stopped.

Found the cache after a little bit of searching. The clues made it sound closer to the path than it is. Nice hiding spot though! Left Muddled Moose Travel Bug who likes the pine forest since it reminds him of home (Canada). We then walked to the summit which is quite the feat for people used to fairly flat countryside (Ontario). The Queenstown Hill is higher than our 'Blue Mountain'.
A spare morning in Queenstown, so up I went that hill again.
FOUND IT.
Note to future geocachers, all the previous notes/logs/entries give enough clues info to find the real cache container.
TNLN, then after I walked down out of there (I conquered the summit yesterday), it was Coooeeee off on my touring NZ on my MTB..

No idea what to make of this - is it the container or not - it was at the exact spot by coords & the clues.
If it is, someone needs to tell me so I can log it as a find. The container (see photo) was empty with no markings.
Does it thus need to be ARCHIVED?
Went to the top and had fantastic views, well worth the climb anyway.

Enabled cache as it appears to be active.

Found it quite easily, great little spot! You might want to remove the big red warning on this cache page as it seems fully operational to us.
Great views, and if you're heading up that way, make the effort to get to the summit. Fabulous panoramas!
Thanks for the cache!

Found it easy enough without the clues. Took nothing, left a slightly used lift pass for Sunshine Village (Banff, Canada).
Thanks for the excuse to take a nice walk. Views from the hill are great.

[Daniel found this easily thanks to HLD's tips! It's in good order - took a drink sachet & left a bungee cord. I'd just add that the tips need adjusting slightly as follows] After the gate turn left at the stump - then go about 30 before the 2 up [Don't be tempted to drive in from the Franton end in a good 4WD - it's a power line access road and pretty rough. The ice was oozing out of the banks and forming icy walls, creeks were frozen - all pretty impressive. Thanks - a good walk!]

Dang it! Even after reading the previous logs I was still hopeful but alas, twas not to be. . Did find a plastic box in the right area but it was empty with no cache markings so initial hopes dashed. Still, nice walk.
[Second to last cache on my voyage to the other end of the country on a TB rescue mission. Cache intact and secure. Description a little misleading, but systematic grid search eventually uncovered it. - Fly Me Home TB, + 2004 Geocaching Token (1 of 12) Small spoiler follows...]Gain as much altitude in the shortest distance you can.
It was a nice walk up to the gate. I used the hint as it was the weekend and there were quite a few people around. I couldn't quite work out what the 'draw' mentioned in the hint was, but I continued on anyway. After about 45 minutes of searching, I decided it would be best to give up and so avoid squashing any more plants. As I began to suspect later in the day when I was searching for your Pipeline Highwalk cache, maybe the wrong map datum has been used for the coordinates of this cache? On the plus side, I did see many varieties of plants, like holly, roses, currents, etc. Cheers, Donovan.
Placed the cache. Hope that you enjoy the walk, as we sure did. If you feel brave enough, hike the trail all the way to the top of Ben Lomond.
