Logs

Hi Team '80'. I found your cache this afternoon.

I have to admit, after reading the last two logs and all the description, I figured I recognised location 4 and 5, so thought I might skip a few locations and put this one on the to-do list for next time I was out that way. I'm sorry I cannot confirm all the location answers. 4 and 5 make perfect sense.

So I wanted to snap a photo of the Lone Pine for the centenary of the battle and this was my only day off since last Tuesday. So took a walk, did the necessary calculations, watched a couple of kids playing polo cross, and then found the cache.

Thanks Team '80'. I hope I&P and BB didn't put you off. I reckon its worth reviving of not too late and the first few locations are still right.

PS - I noticed your name on a Sol de lune cache in our area recently. Wink

this would rate as one of the most annoying caches I've come across. the numbers just don't add up, I found the same canola field someone else did from attempting to find the 2nd location. read some logs and came up with a more likely location only to have the information gathered there still not take me to the next location accurately.
luckily I met up with a local cacher and he gave me a hint to location 4 so off I trek to have another crack. met up with some very experienced cachers Penny and Ian at this location and explained my calculation issues. They were keen to solve this one too so once we found the right plaques we soon had another location to check out except the gps said it was over 600m away - but its only meant to be 197m; usual story on the sums, deduced where we would find location 5 and off we trekked approx. 197 m without bothering with the gps.
more numbers gathered, co-ordinates plugged in and again came up with a location far from the 50m it was supposed to be. so we wandered around trying to find the cache home via a visual clue from the gallery.
now covered in cobblers pegs, cache not found, Ian tried the phone a friend solution but it had been too long since they had found it.
this needs the cache owner to sit with someone new while they try to work out the various locations to see where it goes all wrong then you might get some more finds. Its a great trail to interesting places and I think more are attempting it and not getting to the prize than needs to.

Our 1st DNF today.
[red]We had a great afternoon 'caching with blissbaby and her muggle friend, before heading back to Dubbo to meet up with yet more 'cachers, however this cache was the "black spot" of our afternoon!!

As blissbaby says, this is one of the most annoying caches we have ever done. In fact if we could award this an unfavourite point we would have no hesitation on doing so.

We started off much earlier in the day working through the various way points, & spent quite some time here at around 3:49:00 PM but we just couldn't locate the cache.

The calculations are complex and unrewarding, and when the final GZ was discovered we found that all the fences around the final GZ have been recently replaced and there is now no sign of the large gate post that is shown in the spoiler photo.

This cache hasn't really been found for quite some time and the CO hasn't accessed the Groundspeak site since January 2013 so we figure they aren't active any longer.

We spent quite some time here at around 3:49:00 PM in the company of blissbaby, but we couldn't locate the cache.
The calculations are complex and unrewarding, and when the final GZ was calculated we found that all the fences around the final GZ have been recently replaced and there is now no sign of the large gate post that is shown in the spoiler photo. We are pretty sure that the cache has been lost with the fence works.

Could a reviewer please temporarily disable the cache pending a response from the cache owner?

Started this on our bike ride round Dubbo on Saturday by finding WP1. Returned today with the car and found WP2 & WP3. Headed out for WP4 but found we were on the wrong side of the river and out of time. Will have to return on our next trip to Dubbo.

This was a great series, started on Australia Day & have steadily worked our way through it over the few days we had in Dubbo.
Luckily we combined the last GZ & another cache to be done at the same time, what a good way to end it.
Thanks team '80' for taking us on a wonderful trip. It has earned a favourite point from us.

Found at 1:19 PM GAFF3. We actually had a look at this cache in Sept 2009 when we were here last, but had to let it go as we didn't have the time to finish it (or even start it!). This time we were determined to see where it led and the story that it told and also it is one of those caches that we are trying to find - ie all active caches pre the date that we started caching.
After getting over the beginning/end method of working out the number of years, we soon realised that we were going to head exactly where we had been caching the day before[xx(]. This actually turned out to be a huge benefit as someone in our team cocked up a calculation and we were looking at trying to get into the middle of a huge canola field! Having a good idea of where we were to go, we realised that the South co-ord was mucked up and looking at the question once again we found that we forgot to do the last bit - ie add 1 [B)] (it did get a bit tedious reading all of the instructions from the small GPSr screen - should have printed it out.)
With the very final calculation made - we placed it into the GPSr and found that we again had mucked up the calc. as it showed 139 metres to GZ [xx(] This error actually took a long time to hunt down as it was such a simple one that we continually over looked it.
Eventually we found the error and plugged in the co-ords to find that we were standing just 8 metres from the cache Big Grin The only problem was that there were bushes and bushes of "farmers friend" to get through which ended up on us and took - this is not an exaggeration - 40 minutes to remove all of the seeds from our clothes.
In the end a satisfying cache and tour and we thank Team '80' for the history and sharing the involvement of the family in those sacrifices.

Managed to finish this one off today as we were leaving Dubbo. The cache is in great condition. TNLN TFTC

Half way through and have run out of time. We will return in about six months to finish off. If only we had done this one the other day we would have been so close to Location 3 while doing another cache. Them's the way.

19-Oct-11
It took 2 attempts to get the coordinates correct to find the second way point. This led me to another interesting area but the coordinates I had were not putting me in a spot that would reveal the clues so I gave up at this point.

26-Mar-11
A great multi with some good historical sites around the area, had a 7000 km trip ahead of me after stage 2, calculate and recalculate 6 times or so always 7000km's away. 15 minutes sitting in the car re-entering co-ordinates and it dawns on me that I had changed from South to North on the co-ordinates screen, did not realize you could that with a touch of a button on the Oregan 550 but I do now, nice to know I can still do maths, just cant enter data damm fat fingers.

This is probably my favourite cache in Dubbo or at least in the top 3!! Took us to some great spots, wonderful history, and I absolutely loved GZ! Such a wonderful place to look around and explore. Apart from the giant man-eating spiders of course! They were just ginormous!!! Thanks Team '80'. *recommended* to take the time and do this one

Very good. Had a lot orf fun. The final reward is finding this cache but to make it even better I feel a short family tree should be hidden in the cache, I feel I know the players but cant quite fit them together, Well done and congratulations on such an achievement as setting this cache up.

What an interesting cache. Geokids had a history & maths lesson rolled into one. Thank you for sharing your family history. TNLNSL

Just wanted to thank you for the caching we did so far (we're up to WP4), but we're out of time and the distances are making the rest of this unachievable for us. But we'll know where to kick off from if we're ever in Dubbo again.

YAY, AFTER 4 YEARS - FINALLY FOUND IT.

Way back in 2006, I was continually frustrated by the ambiguity and off-logic maths in the initial calcs. Just couldn't grasp what was intended - as evidenced by the many other cachers at the time. After trying various "logics" I finally progressed a couple of steps in years past. Thereafter, every time I was passing through Dubbo, I did another stage. This time on my way to Brisbane, I finally completed the last few stages, WOW, what an expedition out there - it was MUDDY AND slushy AFTER THE RECENT RAINS. (9th).

An interesting tour overall, nice final location, Thanks for the cache. (logging now when I have access to a pc)

Found by Mary & David at 1415. Started this one yesterday but couldn't make the numbers work. Studied the maps last night and came up with coordinates that seemed to point to a likely location at the right range. Today, we spent most of the morning at the zoo, and headed to Location 2 after lunch. We seemed to be in the right place but couldn't find the required numbers, so our coordinates must have been wrong after all. Made some assumptions based on some information gained over dinner last night, and managed to pick up the trail again at a later location that we guessed (correctly) we'd already seen. Our thanks to Team '80' for a wonderful cache exemplifying true sacrifices, and for sharing your family history.

Found tonight on dusk with a random person using neither clues nor GPS, just local knowledge from having looked at the cache page this morning. Been thinking about doing this one for a while. I guess the local knowledge took a while to get. Swapped a Ford white touch up paint and a mint condition latest release Maccas toy still in its wrapper with a set of headphones and a mini glowstick. SL and hid the cache more as it was exposed when we got there.

Thanks for the cache Nads. Total time from home to cache and back was 50 minutes.

an old chook visited

Completed this one in company with gerrynewgirl over two days. This was a good cache but a bit too long winded for visitors to town. GZ though was a very pleasant spot. TFTC TN left token.

What an interesting multi which was started with weroamin and livinglife who joined us at the first stage in the pouring rain the day before, weroamin and I broke off to complete another multi which crossed our path and returned today to complete this one. I was impressed by the community Hall at GZ, geez those farmers must have been wealthy at some stage to be able to build that out there, and not to mention all those corner posts, gate posts and strainer posts! TFTC.

An interesting cache that we enjoyed, but a bit too long when only in town for a visit. TFTC

Found with Sandy Feet - I'm part of 'Friends'

I really enjoyed doing this cache, thank you

Well we managed 4 caches on our morning session and saved this one for the afternoon. This has been our most enjoyable cache while visiting Dubbo. The approx distance to the next waypoint was great to check we had our maths correct.

Thanks for sharing your family with us and showing us a few great sites around Dubbo.

It was great to finally do this one. Loved being part of your family history. Container in good order. Thanks

RazzFINALLY!!
A very interesting multicache.
We definitely learnt more history than intended due to our own mind-boggling maths that seems so clear in hindsight.
Big GrinThank you

My first multistage cache, and despite some initial problems adding up (!) managed to make it to the end ok. First time cacheing for SWMBO - slowly dragging her onto the cacheing wagon...

Thanks for allowing us to make the most of your family's history

One of the best caches I have done so far - well constructed (probably better now that the distances have been included - they really helped) and full of meaning. Some beautiful locations and good tour of the area for us visitors. Thanks!

08-Apr-07
Great cache. Very well organised multi. Would have been pretty much impossible without the distances to tell us when we had got the maths right. A few things to consider:

Q1b - could be taken as korean + ww1 + ww2, but you mean korean + ww1

Location 2: Q1 - "take the year", should be "take the last two digits of the year".

Location 3 was very busy on easter sunday, so we tried to be really discreet.

Great adventure, TFTC!

Wow what an interesting cache chase [^]
In If's illogical world the maths made perfect sense Smile
The history and locations make for a wonderful caching experience Smile
The final location is one of those magic spots that you would only stumble upon by accident or caching Big Grin
What a great cache container too. Bulletproof.
Took Pooh Bear and left a matchbox car.
TFTC and history lesson Big Grin

I have spent the day re doing this cache to double check a few things. Seems like my female logic has caused a few hick ups.

I have added distances between each location to help guide people and also adjusted a question in Location 1 to read a little differently in hopes that this will also help others.

Cache is in good condition, although now missing a cute little pink 4wd car which was confiscated by Little Miss '80' - too hard to argue with a 2 year old !

I found that it took approximately 1.5 - 2 hours to do this cache today.

Good Luck to all future cachers !!

15-Sep-06
The description of maths is FAR FAR too ambiguous. (also as evidenced by the MANY log entries below referring to the difficulties peoples have had with it). I have tried this 3 times now and I seem to get location 2 is 60km away???????
I'm a man, does that mean I can't understand the "LOGIC"???????

I'll contact the owner to (a) seek advice and (b) ask if they could make the description clearer for ALL users.

Did this one over a couple of weeks .this cache is one of the most enjoyable multies we have done so far .Interesting, has meaning ,and is all there , thanks team 80 top stuff

06-Jan-06
We had a lot of trouble with this cache. Finally got the first waypoint after some help. Our interpretation of one question through us out. We started waypoint 2 which seemed fairly easy. Got all the info required, worked out all the math and the co-ords put us about 40km out of town!!!! Went for a drive but as predicted...nothing. Came back asked Mrs. Bronze and First Lady for help and they got the same answer as us. We have NO idea where we have gone wrong.....maybe we aren't smart. We were told it was a really good cache but sadly we won't be able to get it this time.

It was a fun cache to find. A real thinking one but very worth it. Thanks

Lovely Cache, Great idea
The maths does work if you think about it!!!

Thank you

Once we worked out the maths, which was a little odd at times, the cache was fantastic. Great 'tour of duty' over a few days. A nice way to celebrate cache number 50!

Took candle, left clown bear.

Thanx Team 80, we really enjoyed this well planned cache.

Logged at 6.20pm. Good one Kate. Swapped 4x4 for Dracula Teeth. Bushy

I started this one the other day with The Bronze in tow, and finished it with Mrs-Mix78 and Mini-Mix03. The maths is a little screwy I think, but as I am told that Mrs Bronze (A.K.A The Iron) had no trouble with it, and given that my wife (who is bad at maths helped me) and given that Mrs Team 80 set this cache up I humbly suggest all you have to do is think like a women and the maths makes sense, which is to say no sense at all. Local knowledge helps as well as going to where you think it might be help you work out the way the dates are counted. All said and done, thanks for a fun cache Mrs Team 80.

10-Oct-03
Thsi was my first cache on my own. I made certain that i got no help feom Bronze. It took me a few goes but i got there eventually. Well done kate. I especially liked the fact that it was a 'Girly" Cache...ie, no digging through bushes and long grass etc.
Good Job

Mrs Bronze
